If you do buy grafted roses make sure you bury the bud union below the ground about 2 inches or so. Most shrub roses will then become own root roses over time.
    Enjoy!

Paul Zimmerman Roses Is it illegal to propagate a few roses just for your own garden as long as you don’t sell or in other way make a profit? A few years ago when I lived in Germany, I had a „ Kleigarten“ and I grew a few cuttings from David Austin roses ( Teasing Georgia and Gentle Hermonia) but I kept them for myself. Was that illegal? I also made cuttings from Gloire de Dijon. That should of course be OK.

Yes, in the fall roses produce hips and they look like berries. Inside those are the rose seeds. Take a look at my video on hybridizing roses. Brad Jalbert talks a little about planting rose seeds in it.

Thanks for an excellent video. I originally watched this video so I could basically shape a patented Hybrid Tea that is struggling. My rose for some reason wants to grow as a vine and not as a bush. Constantly I have to battle diseases light problems and growing issues. Why do I do it. Well it is the most beautiful rose that I have ever seen. The flowers are extremely huge, with a rainbow of colors. The colors range everything from a bright orange, peach, yellow, and a blush of scarlet. The flowers are actually prettier in full bloom than in bud or just opening up. As the flower ages it does fade to pink. The flower will last for weeks. I have actually rooted one and the flower has come out the same. I would gladly compost the plant and purchase one, but I cannot find one. I bought it at Lowes years ago. I sincerely agree about ethics and for that reason I will not purchase African Violets that are registered. I feel as long as the clones never leave the pot for sale or as gifts that I am not stealing from the breeder. When I used to start cuttings I used to cut them and stick them in the ground with very little success. Thanks to your video my cuttings are now starting to bud. Thanks for the video and I do agree with your ethic issue.

Here in San Diego Weeks put the bare root plants in the containers around the first week of Jan so by the time I planted them in Mar they had quite a bit of vegetative growth & a good root mass . The few plants I have cloned (I've used thick healthy canes ) are very strong plants (Queen Elizabeth Lincoln & Monroe turned out great ) I don't sell them I just plant them on my property

Great video, & answers a question I have wondered about 4 a while.
OK I have seen rose grafting, & know why its carried out.
But have always thought that grafted roses ( whilst they have their place ) often look unnatural, sort of `pole effect’ on bush roses.
Over here the good old British people ( sadly ) r used to being fed whatever’s `best for them’ ? without question.

The best way is to dig down in the pot a bit and see if you see a bud union. It will look kind of like a knot and all the canes will come from it. An own root rose doesn't really have that.

Thank you, sir. I'm a new rose farmer. I have learnt so far that grafted roses in our farms grows in about 3 months and flowers are seen. But those flowers stems are about 1 ft only therefore, we cut it off. After 7 months, trees grow up to 6 feet and started producing flowers with average 2 ft stems. I found that your statement in last part is different to our rose plants. Please kindly point out if there's something I'm missing.

Last year I decided to finally plant roses. Waited from spring waiting for them to bloom, they did... the next spring. All 14 were Dr huey..I feel like I got scammed because they were bare root, and did not say on the bag, that they were grafted. Then I found out about chamblees , and vowed to only buy own root from now on. I waited a year treating them like babies, wondering why they didn't make one flower. My own root ones started blooming immediately.

I buy my roses from a San Diego nursery & all of the Weeks Tea roses are grown on Dr. Huey root stock I planted about 20 of them last spring & all of them flowered & this season they are looking even better .They were in 5 gallon containers so they had a healthy root mass before I put them into the ground. From what I've read you can't fertilize bare root ( BoneMeal is ok for root growth) roses until they have been in the ground for 6-8 weeks & then sparingly so you don't burn developing roots

I planted it into my other grandma's garden and I left the country. Returning after a year, I noticed that the rose produced a decent growth, brought flowers too, but the flowers were not with multiple layers of petal it was more like a "wild rose" as we say it at home, singular petals opening up in a circle. Did I got the wrong rose or I should have done something with it?

I would LOVE to be able to look at cutting and see a nice rootball like yours had after a month. I'm at the point where I just want to say that I have successfully grown a rose from a cutting that I had but in the meantime, I purchased a new rose plant for my mom called 'Neil Diamond' and it looks like it's going to be a colorful flower and from what I was told, incredibly fragrant, as well. I live in San Diego and it's mid January so in a month or two, I am going to try again(and again) but if you have any tips to help me succeed in this one endeavor, I would appreciate it...

I'm just about tasting the tip of the iceberg about roses. I like flowers in general but I have to admit I don't know too much about roses yet. (my grandma used to have a mini nursery, so that's how my admiration started) I just have a question, maybe it will look a bit stupid, but I'll risk it anyway. 2 years ago I brought a rose root from the market, it was foreign. I didn't pay too much attention to it, so I can't recall its name. The picture was showing a pink rich rose with lots of petals.

Which type of roses do you call "florist" roses and "exibition" roses? For cut flower production its better to use grafted roses, but for garden its better to plant own root roses, is that what youre telling? What do you think about miniature and floribunda roses ? Are they better as grafted or own root?

    • @Paulzimmermanroses
      @Paulzimmermanroses  9 років тому

Milos Ivanovic Correct on the own root vs grafted for florist roses. Florist or exhibition roses to me are roses raised for their flower, stem length, vase life without worry too much about the plant itself. Garden roses are roses for the garden. To me garden roses are better own root and florist grafted so floribunda and mini roses for the garden are better own root. Very few floribundas are raised for florist while some minis are. But almost all minis on the market are own-root.

You use a word when describing the above ground and below ground part of the plant. Sounded like " above the ground, be it a "fairy" is the same as the rose below the ground, which is also the "fairy". " I get the idea but that "fairy" word put me to sleep. It is at approx 1:37 of the video. What is that word you said? I like the videos. I'm learning, Thanks.

I'm using the rose called "The Fairy" has an example. In that part of the video I explain that with an own-root rose the part of the rose above and below the ground are the same rose. In this case "The Fairy".
On a budded rose the part of the rose below the ground is not the same as the part above the ground. If the part above the ground is the rose "The Fairy" then below the ground will be a rootstock that is not "The Fairy".

At this point the only videos I make are with Jackson & Perkins. That isn't one we are planning to make. Search for propagating roses on You Tube. There are some out there already.

I don't have a video on that. If you search for budding or grafting roses you should find it.

When you say you directly grafted. What did you graft them on to?

To be honest I'm not a rose breeder so I can't really answer the more technical questions particularly your second one. Sorry about that.
