Mr Zimmerman your videos were immensely helpful to me with my rooftop roses years ago, and here you are still, helping me again with my new roses in my new garden (Joseph's Coat for one... wowzers it's pretty). Thanks again. You're my rose hero :)
The company that I've bought several own root roses from have a lot of videos on what to do when your rose arrives but nothing about what to do for the first year of life except use fish fertilizer so this video answered a lot of questions I had. Thank you again.
I was going to put this on a different video but I wanted to drop you a line and let you know I did used to be scared of buying roses because of all the hype of saying they need so much attention after watching many of your videos I almost feel like a pro everything I have been taught through your instruction has helped considerably I love how my roses are looking they're coming along I will try to give you a picture next spring thank you Paul for all that you give
Thank you for this excellent video! I planted an own root Zephirine Drouhain this June, and am easing it along. It's now July, and we've had a few really hot days. Three days were over 100F. She seems to be doing just fine. With this little band, I'm enjoying the journey. Took notes from this video. Subscribed. : )
@@Paulzimmermanroses I will be watching more from you. I love Roses! Wouldn't you know I would fall in love with a prickly plant. I am armed with the proper gloves this year! I look forward to having you on my shoulder.
I just planted an own root David Austin wise Portia a couple weeks ago in New England 6b and they are already growing buds. Should I pinch the buds off until spring? Or is it ok to let it bloom?
Hi Paul, Great info! Just potted my very first rose - a William Baffin climber - and I'm not sure if I should tie the canes horizontally to a trellis this first growing season or if I should just let it grow vertical. I want the energy into the roots, not the blooms, right? Thank you!
Nicole Vabre You do want energy into the roots but that is more about what fertilizer you use. Use lower nitrogen the first year (nitrogen is the first number on the NPK scale) Tie the canes horizontally now. As they mature they will get stiffer and it will be more difficult.
Thank you very much! The best lesson I could find. Just one more question, I received a new rose bush in 4 inch pot, replanted it to the bigger one. It is small but expensive. Can I keep this one at home for the winter time? I live in Illinois, can be very cold.
I have a very odd situation and have a question which I pray can be answered. I had moved into a home with very ignored climber. I cut it back as per your instructions and have cared for it really the best that I can. In re- organizing and cleaning the garden in which this rose is I have found canes coming out of the ground a foot or two in some cases away from the main plant. This rose bush seems so raggedy and unkempt even though I have been trying to maintain it. the stray or what seems to me to be "suckers" are not very deeply rooted. My little helper pulled on the long bare-ish branch of this plant and it came right out of the ground. Can this branch be replanted some where else? Is it normal for this to happen to a climber?
Terrilyn Patten A lot of roses will "sucker" the question is if the rose is budded or own root. Does the foliage and thorns on the sucker look like the climber. If they do then yes, go ahead and replant them. If not it's probably rootstock and I wouldn't bother.
Sevin will kill anything it comes in contact with in terms of insects and that includes pollinators, butterflies and the like. I'm against using it under any circumstances.
Great detailed information. Thank you very much sir. But I have a query, sometimes it seems very hard to deal with some stubborn fungus. Can you please suggest best organic ways to deal with these fungus diseases.
If they are fungus like blackspot, powdery mildew etc then I'd use a copper based spray. Your local garden center can help you with choices. Just be careful using them in hot sun. Best to apply them on a cloudy day.
Hi paul,I am a rose grower in kolkata and I do win prizes in flower shows in and around Kolkata, your videos ar really good, can you send me some of your wone root rose plants?
Nice job. I've been gardening for over 40 years, and yet I've learned a lot from the few videos of yours that I've seen so far. Good luck.
love the quote.. be patience, enjoy the journey of its growth...like looking at my daughter growing from a small baby, now a teenager

Keep it in an unheated building like a garage. That is how most people overwinter roses in pots in cold climates like yours.

Insect control how do you feel about the brand SEVEN it's mostly for vegetable plants but I was wondering how it would do on roses
Sevin will kill anything it comes in contact with in terms of insects and that includes pollinators, butterflies and the like. I'm against using it under any circumstances.
How long does it take before a dormant rose starts to show growth and not just look like a stick in the ground?????

+Nipam Saha Hi There. Thanks for the kind words. I don't sell rose plants so Im afraid I can't help you. Sorry!
I have 4 new canes coming out of an existing cane. What do I do? I had no new canes come out of the base of the rose this year.
Do nothing, This is great news and exactly what you want to have happen.
How long it take for own root rose to start first bloom
They bloom quite quickly. Certainly in the first season and quite often within several months of being rooted.
