    Dig hole. Add to hole 1 part peat moss, 1 part living or good soil (no granular fertilizer soil mix), 1 cup bone meal and 1/2 bag worm castings. Mix it up. Start holes before roses arrive to break up planting process. Use rose box to make weed barrier around rose cutting triangles where canes come out. Water in well with liquid fish fertilizer. ☺

    I have never tried own root Rose's, I've always bought grafted roses, either from local nursery, or Jackson Perkins or others on line. But, I've watched a few of your videos recently. I will order a few roses next spring from you guys. I've lost grafted roses in the past, when I'm pretty sure I did nothing wrong. So, I may try a few of your hybrid tea roses, and see how they do, and how they compare. Thank you, John

    My recommendation to you: I wish I had read this BEFORE my roses arrived. I am here suggesting, that when someone order roses from you, with the information that you have received the order to INCLUDE this video and also the video of amending all parts of the garden soil like you did (that I still have to look that you have mentioned at the beginning of this video). So when the roses come, the bigger area has been amended, then an additional amended soil created just before the roses are planted in the created hole. And also use measurements like 1/2 cup instead of part of the bag.

    Hi Mr. Hanna! Thank you for this video. It is in much better detail than your video from 6 years ago. Excellent information I sincerely appreciate it! Easy to follow. Instead of tossing in directions maybe you should refer your customers to this video link on the outside of the box? You already referenced it in your emails we receive when our purchase is confirmed. Maybe it would save paper and confusion? Today I received my 4 beautiful rhododendrons but only received information about roses being defoliated due to the heat. My rhododendrons were not defoliated and unfortunately I received no planting instructions for rhododendrons. It would also be easier to update one channel and delete old videos and add new videos than to update all the paper inserts as well as the website and channels when changes occur. I prefer the videos to paper anyway because they are easier to see exactly what, where, and how much you are referencing when you are discussing the plant or materials. The only information I would add to this video is how much fertilizer to use when using the Founders Fish Fertilizer. One last comment I would really appreciate is a video on planting my new rhododendrons that arrived. I read some information you have on the website but I hope it is correct because you are adamant about not using granular fertilizer on new roses but I think the website directs us to use Holy Tone and Cow manure for the Rhododendrons?

    • @heirloomroses
      @heirloomroses  3 роки тому +3

      Thank you for the suggestions! Cow manure is a soil amendment and not the same as a granular fertilizer. We do recommend only using a liquid fertilizer such as Founders Fish for the rhododendrons as well so as not to burn the roots. You can read more about planting and caring for rhododendrons here on our website: www.heirloomroses.com/info/care/care-for-companion-plants/rho/

    My 4 roses arrived two days ago along with your Get Growing Bundle and they will be planted today. I’ve been growing roses from various sources for 20 years. These are my first from Heirloom. I’ve scoured your website and your videos and I cannot find a simple set of instructions on how to use the Bundle when planting. I would think something like “1 cup bone meal, 2 cups aged cow manure etc.” would be so useful. There’s no clear information on using the worm castings, mint compost, and fish fertilizer. And as you highly recommend ordering this bundle with new roses, a clear 1, 2, 3 set of steps would be so helpful! Please consider this suggestion. Thanks!

    • @heirloomroses
      @heirloomroses  Рік тому +1

      Hello! I am sorry you have had trouble finding the exact direction for using the soil amendments. With soil amendment, since they are not as strong as fertilizers, there isn't as much of a need for such precise measurements. Here is a link to an article on preparing the soil with the amendments. www.heirloomroses.com/info/planting-roses I hope this helps!

  • @organfreak
    @organfreak 3 роки тому +4

    Really good video! I'd like to see the written instructions that come with your roses be "corrected" to agree with this video in terms of the details that are different. (I just planted Westerland yesterday.) The printed directions say to make your soil mix outside of the hole rather than IN it. They say, for the bonemeal, to just follow the instructions on your bone meal bag. Mine didn't have any such instructions, so I put in about half a cup. Evidently, could have been at least a full cup! The printed instructions don't mention worm castings, tho I did use some "Living Soil," nor did they advise one to mulch! Then I watered it in. THEN I had to FOLLOW that with the fish. I realize that the printed instructions need to be simpler and shorter, but this video made me want to dig up my Westerland and do it over again. Thanks!

      You might consider a raised garden bed, otherwise replace your soil in a 3'-3' space with a well-draining soil mix and amend around the rose with plenty of organic matter to help break down tough soil.

      - Include Aged Cow Manure in the hole when you plant to amend the soil
      - Use the Mint Compost as a top dressing mulch around your plant to help it retain water and deter bugs
