As you progress through the game, these sides switch and now you have modern sonic stages remade in the style of classic Sonic games. Essentially: They made the classic to fit the modern, but later on, they made the modern to fit the classic. It's cool to see how these sides switch. I'd probably consider this the pinnacle of Sonic music. Like, the original was one of my favourite VGMs of all time; as a kid, I actually just plugged my earphones into the MegaDrive (Genesis), unlocked the sound test by ear (because the TV was in use), and listened to this song on loop for a while. This remix in Generations, despite not getting fully utilised within the game, is just that same song being evolved and ascended to become something glorious. It's one of the few pieces of music, in general, I would consider "perfect". It keeps on giving and transforming as it goes on, without changing its character and overall sound, kinda like Master of Puppets. It's a hell of an experience.
The original mix is a solid track on its own, but the Generations remix is one of the best glowups I've seen in game music. As an amateur musician myself, I usually find myself thinking of what I'd do different when listening to a song. I still had thoughts on this track, but this is the first track where I can only think of alternate options that aren't necessarily improvements.
The music was what actually ended up getting me really into Sonic when I was younger. I remember having a moment a bit like yours here, just getting lost in the guitar and drums- it was like a moment of revelation for me. I'm not into the games the same as I was then, but Sonic music remains really special to me, even if that might seem goofy.
I can’t wait till we get to see this mans react to some good ol Sa2, 06, Black Knight, and Secret Rings music. The bops in the Sonic series are so frequent it’s astounding.
I'm here from your Crisis City reaction and I've never heard the Sonic Generations Big Arms... HOLY CRAP that was outstanding!!! I have a remix of this theme by Kamex in my playlist and it's one of my favorites, but the Gens version might be even better. But now I know where Kamex got the inspiration from XD EDIT: I knew I also heard a version that's closer to Gens! It's a remix by GaMetal. All of them are great but Gens might now be my favorite
Hey Jesse! Stumbled on here, good vid. It’s true what you said about us reliving our childhood through you and countless others. I know this vid is old but a pleasure to have seen it. Hope you been good!
They had *no* business going this hard on this track... is what I _would_ say if the whole soundtrack wasn't *phenomenal!* As long as it's suggestions for this game, let alone most music from Sega games, you're likely in for a treat. 😎
I am considering myself a hardcore sonic fan, and yet I have missed out on that gem for so fcking long. Thanks for showing me my new fac sonic track EVER. I love the 3D games and barely enjoyed any of the 2Ds except Master System, CD and Mania. So my love for the tracks usually goes to those games rather than 2Ds. But THIS changed me xD Also, I enjoyed how you were caught off guard like 3 times by the song in less than 3 seconds or so. Very nice ^^
Not gonna lie, I had the exact same reaction when I first heard the remixed version on Sonic Generations. I actually intentionally avoided defeating the boss so I could hear the full version. It was so overwhelming and amazing.
Vicariously reliving childhood or otherwise past moments? Sounds about right, even though I never realized it until you said it. I'm mostly like, "I'm so happy to see someone else like and appreciate music I also like, even tho they don't have the nuance/context that makes it EVEN BETTER." That aside, Sonic soundtracks are typically great- the music is usually the first thing to be praised, especially after Sonic 3. Big Arms still hits years later, but that second version is freaking cracked! I hope you get to hear one of the night themes from Sonic Unleashed haha
I'm really glad to see someone from outside the community enjoying this track. The og Big Arms may be may fav track from Sonic 3. This remix is very special to me bcs of that ❤. The 3ds version of generations has some hidden gems as well, but I'll let people find those on their own 😁
As someone who spent more time listening to the music than playing the games when i heard the full version of that song, it blew my freaking mind, how did they turn a music that just by itself had so much heavyness to it, and turned into that freaking monster of a track, and that sound was coming out a 3Ds SPEAKER that was insane to me. Now, one small piece of advice i'm giving you i'm not sure if others have pointed out, most modern games beginning with Sonic Adventure 1 had full albums with the songs put out, most songs in these CDS have completely different arrangements than the loop versions of the games, i suggest listening to Emerald Coast first, the the game version and then listen to the album version.
That song reminded me so much to old Thunder Force III bosses I just unlocked the Sound and Test in the game just to put this one on loop while I was doing my school homework. Loveable track to vibe to 😅
Hell yeah! This music was just awesome. So many of them translate awesomely into metal guitar songs, it's uncanny. Some of my favourite guitar covers come from a dude who did all of the Sonic 3 OST on guitar. Fun fact: the music (and game) plays slower on PAL MegaDrive/Genesis than on NTSC version, so most versions you can find online or in emulators don't sound "right" compared to how they sounded to me on original hardware back in the day when I was a kid.
As someone who beat this game within a couple weeks of release, I'm physically ill thinking about how I slept on this track. With typically less than a minute of it in actual gameplay, I had no idea it went this hard.
It's beautiful, isn't it? Sonic and epiphanies lol As for the song, I'm so happy you got around to it, it's legit one of my favourite Sonic background soundtracks and I've played Sonic since Sonic 1
There used to be a UA-cam channel that uploaded 30 minute extensions of video game songs called BrawlBRSTMSx 3. I held it very near and dear to my heart because I used to listen to their channel's videos all the time back when I was in middle and high school, but unfortunately Nintendo copyright stroke the channel into oblivion and it is gone forever. It was a go-to UA-cam channel for maybe Millions of viewers any time they wanted to listen to music for studying or cleaning. They had playlists for hundreds upon hundreds of games! I don't remember all of their most popular videos, but Big Arms was one of the top 15 most viewed videos, and it was what introduced me to this absolute banger of a song. I wish I remembered more songs from their "most-popular" section, but all that I remember is that "Masked Dedede" from Kirby Triple Deluxe was #1, so it gets my reccomendation for you to listen to!
Glad to see your Sonic awakening, and soon you'll hopefully have your Kirby awakening cause I'm gonna request a ton of Kirby songs for a while. Can't wait to see your react to it.
Would have been awesome if the requester followed up with the version of this song from Sonic Chronicles. Apparently they had to remake the whole soundtrack for that game on short notice and most of the soundtrack got butchered just before release. For anyone curious, the song is: Sonic Chronicles - Nocturne.
I never played the DS version of this game and came across this by accident one time on UA-cam and was just blown away. It’s amazing what they did with the original song.
Very nice that you got around to listening to this! If you want some more Sonic Music Recommendations, basically check out Sonic Mania's ost, and some of Unleashed as well. Namely, Mirage Saloon act 2 from Mania and Cool Edge Day from Sonic Unleashed
I forget if this was one of the boss themes or the final boss theme... But yeah, there's a great variety of Sonic music to experience, especially if you stopped at 3... Although typically you might be able to split it into eras, types of games (like the 2D games somewhat followed the old styles of things, while the 3D ones went a bit more rock or punk... With maybe one or two exceptions)... Although, if you were playing Sonic Adventure 2, you have stuff like Knuckles stages being more hip hop, while Rouge has kinda spy/espionage style music (or whatever you call it)... Also, games like Sonic Generations and Sonic Mania do a pretty cool job of rearranging/remixing older Sonic music too.
Sonic 3 final boss! This boss was not in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, but I believe the song is still used for the Death Egg Robot boss right before Doomsday Zone.
this theme is what actually sounds 120% eggman... you hear it even without context and Eggman comes to mind.. it happened to me just knowing that eggman was a character and never played the games cause "nintendo fan" .. learned my mistake long ago
Love this song. I think it's among the best boss tracks in a game. It just sounds like a final boss. A threatening final boss that actually makes you want to fight it because you'll feel badass (even if the boss isn't that hard).
I did a cursory run through other comments to this point to see if anyone else mentioned it. Originally Micheal Jackson helped to compose the Sonic 3 OST but the credit for it was mutually cut as he wasn’t happy with the Genesis sound chip quality and when Sonic 3 was in development he was in legal trouble due to sexual misconduct allegations against him and Sega didn’t want the bad press. The music for Launch Base Zone, Icecap Zone, and Carnival Night have the most famous links as you can overlap them with other songs. The closing credits also overlap with Stranger in Moscow. The normal composer finished the OST without Micheal Jackson but kept his contributions, but it was agreed to not credit him.
@@launchbase4944 Sort of. Big Arms / Final Boss is actually a sped up version of the S3 Credits (Stranger in Moscow) song, so I’d say MJ / Buxer were involved. Listen to it again but slow it down
Between the remixes of classic tracks, the new versions for the Sonic that wasn’t present for a given level, and the original tracks, this game has my favorite Sonic ost.
No need to worry about the lack of breakdown, I don't think I could have asked for a better reaction to Big Arm. 😁 The first time I heard this remix, in addition to the hype, I teared up with joy. I grew up with Sonic Mega Collection which had the classic trilogy in it, so this boss theme was stuck in my head for ages as it was pretty hard to beat without Super Sonic as a kid. Hell, even with Super Sonic he can still hit you and knock you out of it. Anyways, I never thought the original could be elevated so much. Sonic Generations is the 20th Anniversary game for the series and yeah, they went all out with the soundtrack (and the game in general, honestly). I believe this remix was done by Cash Cash! It also features Jun Senoue, whose name I'm sure you will come to know in due time as he is quite synonymous with Sonic music post-classic era. Some of his very first work in the series was with Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I'm glad you also felt it in your soul Jesse. Hits me every time. You nailed it on the head as to why it's so enjoyable to watch these videos, and I would be lying if I said it didn't mean a lot to me to see such a genuine reaction like this. Thank you for doing what you do, we also appreciate you man.
I don't have any money to make it happen through Patreon, but since we're hitting him with sonic music I hope someone gets him to check out "Supporting Me" from sonic adventure 2.
the Tee Lopes version of Big Arms from Sonic Mania Adventures is my favourite rendition of the theme so i hope you get to listen to it some day in your own spare time
Possible Hot Take, but the original Big Arms fight and it's theme are both the best Classic Sonic final boss and best final boss theme, even better then Death Egg Robot and it's theme.
I'm pretty sure he was behind the original arrangements too. Sad that SEGA didn't give him enough time to work on tracks other than the Super Sonic theme.
@@VelvetAura a year ago, i didn't notice it. But the songs in origins are definitely not made by 2022 jun.. they're not sonic 4 like.
Great reaction.
Also HOLY SHIT i forgot how much the Generations version kicked ass.
But now I know where Kamex got the inspiration from XD
EDIT: I knew I also heard a version that's closer to Gens! It's a remix by GaMetal. All of them are great but Gens might now be my favorite
Hey Jesse! Stumbled on here, good vid. It’s true what you said about us reliving our childhood through you and countless others. I know this vid is old but a pleasure to have seen it. Hope you been good!
Good job person who recommended the song. You have to 100% your playthrough to get this song, so odds are you never heard it as a kid.
Man Ive been enjoying these sonic music reactions. Its such ear candy, and I cant wait whenever theres more of them!!
But THIS changed me xD
Also, I enjoyed how you were caught off guard like 3 times by the song in less than 3 seconds or so. Very nice ^^
The breakdown at the end is just bliss.
I'm mostly like, "I'm so happy to see someone else like and appreciate music I also like, even tho they don't have the nuance/context that makes it EVEN BETTER."
That aside, Sonic soundtracks are typically great- the music is usually the first thing to be praised, especially after Sonic 3.
The 3ds version of generations has some hidden gems as well, but I'll let people find those on their own 😁
I had forgotten how much I loved this track. Thank you for reminding me
Yes !! That was AWESOME ! I cannot wait for more Sonic !! You have so much yet to hear !!
you're going to be blown away by this
As someone who spent more time listening to the music than playing the games when i heard the full version of that song, it blew my freaking mind, how did they turn a music that just by itself had so much heavyness to it, and turned into that freaking monster of a track, and that sound was coming out a 3Ds SPEAKER that was insane to me.
This was a worthy reaction to watch all the way through
That song reminded me so much to old Thunder Force III bosses I just unlocked the Sound and Test in the game just to put this one on loop while I was doing my school homework. Loveable track to vibe to 😅
this is fire!!! i would love if you did more sonic soundtracks!
I was literally JUST about to reccomend this song to you!
This song is insane, I love it
Its seriously amazing
This track. Just
I never played the DS version of this game and came across this by accident one time on UA-cam and was just blown away.
This track is a masterpiece
I was going to say that this sounds a lot like a Yakuza song but then I realized the soundtrack for both is made by Sega
@@VelvetAura Also for Super Mecha Sonic when you play as Knuckles
From sonic generations, my personal fave was the remix of death egg...oh those drums!
this theme is what actually sounds 120% eggman... you hear it even without context and Eggman comes to mind.. it happened to me just knowing that eggman was a character and never played the games cause "nintendo fan" .. learned my mistake long ago
Yo this song goes hard as hell!
The D-Pad did a lovey video on this topic a while back: ua-cam.com/video/_Uko0fCp86c/v-deo.html
yeah but he didn't do this song so I don't think that matters
@@launchbase4944 Sort of. Big Arms / Final Boss is actually a sped up version of the S3 Credits (Stranger in Moscow) song, so I’d say MJ / Buxer were involved. Listen to it again but slow it down
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is peak Sonic.
Between the remixes of classic tracks, the new versions for the Sonic that wasn’t present for a given level, and the original tracks, this game has my favorite Sonic ost.
this song was so good they fit a remix into Sonic Mania's final boss, not the whole track but a part of it.
FINALY YOU HEARD THE ABSOLUTE BANGER
This may get lost but Pokémon music should be on your radar. Outstanding stuff
Fun fact: the right side doesn't have anything special, the only thing that is different is the middle notes are higher pitch than the left side.
I'd love to see more comparison reactions to songs anytime they have multiple official versions. And more Sonic music in general.
The music vs the actual boss fight
Big arms is like my fav sonic track ever and I've never heard that remix before, OMG that was amazing!
Pls do more Sonic content like this. Also great video
Best version of it - "Sonic & Knuckles Final Boss Theme Metal Cover"
by Alex Yarmak
I don't have any money to make it happen through Patreon, but since we're hitting him with sonic music I hope someone gets him to check out "Supporting Me" from sonic adventure 2.
It's actually on the patron request sheet from two different requesters, so we will hear it eventually!
Omg. Yes! I can't wait for him to hear that one. I love that track.
Don’t worry, I requested it a while ago. It will take some time but he’ll get to it eventually.
Awesome sauce! Can’t wait till you get to Doomsday Zone! Possibly the best track Sonic put out before Mania!
Don't have time to watch at the moment, but I can't wait. This *absolutely* needed to be on the channel
edit: have seen it. was good
Same Jesse I missed out on alot of Sonic over the coarse of years.
Thats mostly cause im not that big into 3d stuff at the time tho
the Tee Lopes version of Big Arms from Sonic Mania Adventures is my favourite rendition of the theme so i hope you get to listen to it some day in your own spare time
The only thing I hate about this song is that it ends
Possible Hot Take, but the original Big Arms fight and it's theme are both the best Classic Sonic final boss and best final boss theme, even better then Death Egg Robot and it's theme.
Doomsday clears
Best sonic song ever. Doomsday zone from Sonic 3 & knuckles
can you believe the guy that made the big arms sonic generations song is the same guy who made the sonic 3 ost replacements for sonic orgins?
I'm pretty sure he was behind the original arrangements too. Sad that SEGA didn't give him enough time to work on tracks other than the Super Sonic theme.
@@VelvetAura a year ago, i didn't notice it.
But the songs in origins are definitely not made by 2022 jun.. they're not sonic 4 like. Ice cap sounds almost identical to the prototype, only slightly different. Jun would definitely not make something like that, he probably worked on these tracks like 30 years ago..
You should Hear "i am all of me" from Shadow the Hedgehog Man, It's AWESOME
The Gens version dropped a lot of the subtle harmonies that really made the original track a masterpiece of FM, but the expanded melody really is delightful.
Hahahah, that end where you were just blown away and silent, I FELT that
We _need_ to get Jesse to react to Gang-Plank Galleon, both the original DK Country version and the SSBU version.
I honestly forgot how much the remix expands on the original, I blame the easy as hell boss fight.
To be honest, I would have pegged this as a Thunderforce track rather than something from Sonic.
Speaking of Megadrive OSTs
Fav:
- Comix Zone.
- Ecco The Dolphin, siries.
Underrated:
- Skitchin ("Smog Dog", "Silken Liver Slipper", "Chug Wagon"... )
