Learning to look up again - controlling your smartphone addiction | Ross Sleight | TEDxLeamingtonSpa

  • Ross Sleight has worked in digital media and experiences for over 20 years. Here Ross explores both the personal and social impact of our addictive smartphone use.
Why do our mobile virtual homes take precedence over our real physical homes? Does our obsessive behaviour make us less interactive and engaging with real people? Are we becoming less human and morphing into 'smombies' (smartphone zombies)? And if so, what can we do about it to break our habits, change our behaviour and instead of spending our time looking down bathed in the reflective glare of our 5 inch screens learn to look up again? Ross has been involved in digital media for over 20 years. He's founded four award-winning digital agencies, was a founder of Virgin Games and today is the Chief Strategy Officer for Somo - an accelerator that delivers rapid, actionable innovation for its global clients. Ross is a digital advisor to several influential companies, an investor and advisor to various innovative start-ups and a regular conference speaker. He’s also judged, and won, many industry awards.
Through his passion for art, music and design, Ross is a digital advisor to LIFT (the London International Festival of Theatre) and a director of Leamington's Art in the Park festival alongside his wife and festival organiser Carole. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This is fine points to make to change our behaviour AND I believe it’s important to address the feelings behind these behaviours to prevent relapsing into our phones when we have a bad day or are struggling emotionally with something more long term.
Like asking questions about what is the time on our phone protecting us from feeling - loneliness, inadequacy, overwhelm, fear, worry?
Without addressing the feeling underneath, we’re likely to fall back into these addictive behaviours after a while.
I know I use social media to ‘numb out’ so acknowledging that emotion under the need to numb out first, then changing the behaviour and noticing how I feel without my phone is key for long term solution to this addiction.

I get plenty of sleep. My phone is my alarm and calendar and a key business tool.
I am very aware of the potential of abuse and I never pull my phone out at a shared meal unless it's warranted and I have the permission of those I'm with. If a call comes it that's important, I excuse myself and go outside -- otherwise I let it go to VM.
TURN THE RINGER OFF -- there's no reason to disturb others.
TURN NOTIFICATIONS OFF -- EXCEPT calendar events and SMS. Email and all other notifications are not urgent you'll look at them when you have time. The constant barrage of notifications for EVERY LITTLE THING will drive you crazy.

The hardest thing for me is what I am addicted to on my phone. I could easily go online but the phone is really the place I like to be. I am addicted to learning useless information. Some of it has been so useful to me, and I feel like I learn more every day. I am addicted to reading first hand accounts of interpersonal issues in particular. I am addicted to how people think and what they do. It has been useful but its also useless because so much is out of my control what good is it that I understand it unless I use it for work? It is like a hobby but not really. I'm not happy at all. I also am addicted to funny videos on instagram. I remember I refused to get TikTok and for good reason, but unfortunately instagram was like a parasite as it eventually turned into TikTok without me realizing it and now I'm addicted to it as well. I knew better to stay away from TT but I'm basically on it. What funny thing will I see next? I like funny things and they uplift me but honestly I don't need that to uplift me. I can't get anything done and I'm really honestly becoming afraid of the way I am addicted to my phone. I average 7-9 hours on it somehow per day.
The things I do not do, however, are sit on my phone while spending time with people, I do not go on my phone at all when my husband and I watch things, and I never ever go on my phone while in public.

Here's a sixth suggestion: Aging eyesight. As we all know, we lose our close vision as we age. For me, looking at my iPhone requires I put on a pair of reading glasses. Since I keep my reading glasses tucked away in a shoulder bag, and when out of doors always wear sunglasses, it takes time and some amount of effort to don my reading glasses. The result is I pull out my cell phone only when I'm ready for the dedication and focus (quite literally) required to read the screen. It becomes an act of genuine deliberation.

Yes I agree, the worst is when there only two of you in a conversation and the conversation ends because of a social media notification

2 hours and 25 minutes on your phone. Double that and you'll spend 3 hours and 45 minutes on your phone. 🤔
