I am 50 years old. I remember the world before computers and smart phones. I miss those simpler times. I am so glad you are speaking on the subject of smart phone use addition.
I'm 34 and also remember it. Many fond memories before smart phones were a thing. Even the first mobile phones were great, i could call and txt me friends but that was it (no internet, no mobile data etc). I remember when I first got online in the late 90's, what a great time! No Facebook, no social media, lots of interesting unique content. Nowadays it seems like I just visit the same few enormous sites.
I was just having this conversation recently with a friend. I am 29 years old; I got MySpace around age 12. I got my first smart phone (I think) around 2011 or 2012. I barely remember a life before social media, and only a little bit of a life before having a cell phone. At least with MySpace I could only log on while at home on the desktop. It makes me sad that there are now those who have never known a life with social media and smart phones. Of course a lot of good has come from this technology, but it also makes me wonder what would have been different in my life without it. I remember being extremely depressed for all of my teenage years and early 20s, too.
Sad times now! Go out with friends and see that friends are always glued to their phones. Days without the smartphone were so nice, hope those days come back.
I love to play outside and whenever i think of doing so with my friends, its just dissapointment. Cause they're always on their phone. I just feel like saying, can't you guys just throw those away. Lets play some badminton or football, or something as simple as card games. I love cards, here lemme show you some card magic.
I don't take out my phone at school unless it's necessary, and I need to be picked up for a club or something of the sort. I have noticed it too, believe me it sucks. I just bring a book to school and read it at lunch.
Cell phone addiction is a real thing. If you have a hard time believing this, simply go to a movie and watch how many people are on their phone. Go to any restaurant and just watch or even better, next time you're in a car, just look at the driver in any car next to you. It's completely OUT OF CONTROL.
dude I remember like 4 years ago(I'm 13) I was at a swimming lesson and I decided for some reason that I wanted to count all the people on their phone Guess what Literally everyone was on their phone yeah I'm lucky to not have a phone yet
I can’t constantly look at the driver next to me because I’m usually the one driving but, if I notice someone who looks distracted I always make an effort to look and see if they’re on the phone. 9 times out 10 they’re on the phone!
I am bed ridden with a neurological disease. Smart phones and tablets have given me a chance to communicate with all the people I can’t see and with the family I love. The big problem is the people I live with are becoming distant and have their electronic smart products on while with me. So the people that are far away are closer and the people which are the closest have become distant. For me smart phones and tablets are Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in one machine.

Great video. I am quite aware of phone addiction, and I see it all around me. I feel like I have changed my smartphone behavior; however, I still take my phone with me and feel annoyed when the battery's about to run out. I see the importance to reduce the use a lot less, though. I see it in my classroom too; Kids spend many hours seeing adults use smartphones or using smartphones themselves.
Someone did a restaurant study about 'turnaround times' of the tables; they found out that people taking pictures of their food and talking about the pictures and emailing the pictures to friends and putting them up on Yelp was causing them to spend a half hour more at each table, ruining turnover times for the restaurant owners and thus their 'yelp' reviews as well as incomes... hey everybody, no one wants to see the picture of your lunch... or for that matter, you in your dirty bathroom mirror with all your clutter behind you...
Look at Yelp or Google reviews of restaurants. Yup, people take pictures of their food... same people who take selfies of themselves. Narcissism is rampant.
I love going camping in upstate NY! The area we go to has spotty cell service, with LTE being rare, and the WiFi at the campground is barely enough to load a gps route. It’s nice to take a brake from the constant pull of the phone. We still take them but the internet service is almost unusable thus turning it back into a phone for calling and texting. Of course we still use them for a camera an have offline maps and music but that’s about it.
MR YUP I couldn’t because I have to learn, but when I’m about to learn sth new from yt, I always spend 4-5 hours without realizing , such a waste of time
Yeah, i agree that a smartphone is an awesome piece of tech. If you know how to control it and use it, you'll be fine. bcoz we can learn many things from our smartphones. stop using social media.
the best thing about smartphones is being able to do business like driver licence or car registration renewals from home rather than travelling and standing in lines but i agree we should restrict our usage and reliance on these devices
I work the Graveshift In my workplace the smartphones are making people so addicted that the group gets very loud, obnoxius and downright very rude to others when they are told to be quiet by Management. Worst part is Management does nothing about it...i have to deal with this every single day and don't get me wrong I love Technology, but it is getting out of hand
A great video. I escaped the Smartphone Zombie Apocalypse last year, and life has been so much better ever since. Finally I can say that I am “Hands Free” I just got the 3310 today and I truly love it. No Apps, oh yes, no Distractions, oh yes, actual real conversation with friends. Rewinding technology back to a time when we actually used to communicate with each other, and not stare endlessly down to the ground, lost in a 4 inch screen, works very well for me. If I was quitting smoking, I wouldn't keep a packet of cigarettes next to my bed. Smartphone addiction is much the same, only slightly easier to break. Breaking my own addiction and being free of it was my best decision of 2018. As a street artist for 6 years, it is very, very sad to see what it has done to us. Like a bullet to the eyes, heart, spirit, and soul. There is almost zero "Real interaction" these days. Look down the train station platforms, bus stations, bars, cafe's etc, etc. All you see is the vast majority of people completely disconnected from each other, and reality. In Smartphone world we miss each other, and the possibility of "Real" conversation and real friendship. We miss nature, and we are rarely present in our surroundings. Please come back to the "Real" world. You don't know what you are missing!
ive started doing the same recently i think it solves problems like tracking and snooping and you do realise the addictive nature of these devices and appreciate a break from these so called benefits they give
I feel sad when I am spending time with someone whose company I enjoy and that person is on his phone. It doesn’t matter if we’re having a conversation or not. Even if there are silences while spending time with someone which are bound to happen. I still don’t like it because it makes me wonder if perhaps he finds me uninteresting. It’s rude in general but if someone you like does this…it doesn’t matter if you’re on a date or if it’s friendship, it can make you feel rejected.
It may sound like a paradox, but I like computers, yet hate smartphones. The reason is pretty easy: My computer allows me to solve my own problems, by writing a program. Which I often do Smartphones, on the other hand, come preloaded with a lot of apps which seem to want to replace my own brain. I can do spatial navigation (well, I grew up with it), but someone growing up with Google Maps has no chance to learn that. Old computers, like a C64 or a PDP-11, give you nothing more like blinking cursor. The machine waits for YOU to create the solution to a problem. Obviously you learn a lot with that. An iPhone teaches you nothing, apart from moving your fingers in a certain way.
I didn't get a mobile phone until I was 46, and that wasn't a smartphone. I got one of these when I was 56, and for the longest time I used it only as clock and to take calls. Last year I upgraded to a smartphone with a larger screen though mostly the apps used were camera, clock and public transport timetables. But I only did that because I was traveling back to my home city to visit relatives. When I ride the buses and trains, I generally either read a magazine or or book, look out the window, or chat with other passengers.
In 1999 using the phone was about talking mostly so it can be rude in public space. Now we text and tap more so we are absent but at least we are not loud :-)
I hate that people are so addicted to their phones they can't put them down while watching a movie together, or talking with someone face to face. It is so incredible rude and annoying to sit next to someone who said they wanted to watch a movie with you and they spend half the film scrolling through Facebook.
This is exactly why there is no more good quality popular or rock music anymore ( I'm talking Princes, Michael Jacksons, David Bowies,Smiths, Pink Floyd,Led Zeppelin, Doors and on and on), because this generation is only able to operate a cell phone, only able to passivly experience life through it, and when they do do something, it's only to stroke their egos by taking selfies. Their creative lobe is withered and dried up. I miss music so much , long for the good old days. :(
Turn off your phone and make silence for days! Your body needs that, the silence has the power to understand what's happening to the world. Open your eyes to see truly. Everyone has time to change!!!!!!!! By the way, read, read and read every single day.
It sounds less to do with an addiction to smartphones themselves then it being social media/communication addiction with smartphones being the new favourite medium to access those features.
I put my phone in my bag with the ringer turned off. When I leave for my lunch break I check it for messages. Then I put it away. Then I check it before I leave to go home. And then when I get home I turn it off and put it in a drawer.
Wow when I was a kid I wasn't allowed to use smartphone and when I started using it after 3 years I switched it with a flip phone to make life better 🤔
And FOMO... whatever you do, you are gonna be missing out on something else. If you stay at home next Friday, you will miss your neighbor's cool party. If you go to the party, you will miss meeting your friends at the concert. If you go to the concert you'll miss a lovely evening home alone because your parents are on a weekend trip. Whatever you do, you are alway miss some event. Make choose you do not miss out on the present.
I completely understand but smartphones are a blessing and a curse in my opinion some people in those comments saying before computers and smartphones were simpler times it really depends not everyone has the same opinion I mean I am grateful that they made those electronics
ive been slowly weaning off obsessively checking instagram every time i get a chance to, and ive made a choice to never be on my phone meanwhile eating :) working on it
ya worst thing that could have happened to our society., i hate my cell phone but yet i feel i need it for contacting people and getting things done #fml #addicted
I agrees with many points he made but I see 2 problems with that: first of all, phone usage is different among different people. When I ride th bus for example I used to read a book. Now I have ebooks on my phone and do the same thing, just digitally. If I stumble across interesting information I can write it down or search for additional facts etc. Secondly, communicating online is a different type of communication. But that doesnt mean per se that it is bad. People used to write letters and talk around the camp fire, then a majority of communication was done via a regular house phone. That was also a drastic change and iam sure there are studies that show speaking over the phone is "worse" than talking to someone in person. Also, being around people to often hinders my creativity and at times is stressful. When I am alone I can think much more freely l, don't get distracted by others and can focus much better. I like social gatherings and being around people but that in itself can be a distraction as well.
I have a Motorola Razr flip phone. I think its about 10 years old. I got it because it is Bluetooth compatible and does what I need a phone to do. I have computers at work and at home that are much easier to operate. Smart phones are a luxury I just don't get. I don't get Facebook either. I sent this in on a fax
Don't think smartphones are an addiction?, ask anyone you know & say "I'll give you $100 & I'll take your phone for ONE day"....this deal, this dare won't last the entire day. Now, I dare you to randomly try this with a friend, at a random time of the day with no notice or previous discussion on the topic...your friendship will be severely tested.
You just know there's gonna be comments from people watching this on their smartphone regarding the fact that they're watching this on their smartphone.

Damn right
Is that really still a thing taking pics of your food? I don't really use social media so I don't know
Look at Yelp or Google reviews of restaurants. Yup, people take pictures of their food... same people who take selfies of themselves. Narcissism is rampant.
Erm... How would you take a selfie of anything but yourself?
i think selfies are so narcissistic its a pathetic behaviour imo
Very interesting and even more relevant after 7.5 years
I love going camping in upstate NY!
Top notch!!
I deleted instagram profile and twitter.I am going to delete and fb profile too.
The real life is out there and no at smartphones!!
Did that too. Want to delete Instagram too and some other apps!!
But can you delete UA-cam?
twitter saved me the trouble of deleting my app because they banned me for being passionately leftist
MR YUP I couldn’t because I have to learn, but when I’m about to learn sth new from yt, I always spend 4-5 hours without realizing , such a waste of time
Yay!
Thumbs up if you're watching this on your smartphone
Natty Ryan chrome cast from my phone to tv
im watching on my macbook pro but yes ironic hey
No. I intend to get rid of mine.
I like this guy! Great presentation 👏
I work the Graveshift
In my workplace the smartphones are making people so addicted that the group gets very loud, obnoxius and downright very rude to others when they are told to be quiet by Management.
Worst part is Management does nothing about it...i have to deal with this every single day and don't get me wrong I love Technology, but it is getting out of hand
A great video. I escaped the Smartphone Zombie Apocalypse last year, and life has been so much better ever since. Finally I can say that I am “Hands Free”
I just got the 3310 today and I truly love it.
The things you own, end up owning you
finally someone actually talks about how fucked up smartphones are.
Awesome! Must listen.
So true. I will make changes for sure.
Personally, I leave my phone at home unless I am traveling well outside my city.
ive started doing the same recently i think it solves problems like tracking and snooping and you do realise the addictive nature of these devices and appreciate a break from these so called benefits they give
Which I often do
Smartphones, on the other hand, come preloaded with a lot of apps which seem to want to replace my own brain.
Glad I don't own a smartphone. I don't need one at all.
Mate. What sorcery is this?
I didn't get a mobile phone until I was 46, and that wasn't a smartphone. I got one of these when I was 56, and for the longest time I used it only as clock and to take calls. Last year I upgraded to a smartphone with a larger screen though mostly the apps used were camera, clock and public transport timetables. But I only did that because I was traveling back to my home city to visit relatives. When I ride the buses and trains, I generally either read a magazine or or book, look out the window, or chat with other passengers.
Explains why there’s been a lack of innovation with my generation
You can be that innovation
In 1999 using the phone was about talking mostly so it can be rude in public space. Now we text and tap more so we are absent but at least we are not loud :-)
Good point
@@mryup6100 No, now you turn on the speaker while putting the damn phone in your shopping cart so you have two hands free.
everything in moderation ppl moderatttioiiioioiiiionn
I hate that people are so addicted to their phones they can't put them down while watching a movie together, or talking with someone face to face. It is so incredible rude and annoying to sit next to someone who said they wanted to watch a movie with you and they spend half the film scrolling through Facebook.
The problem is screentime in general, from all sources; TV #1 in the list.
Nothing changed from 2014, it still actual now.
The best change is to realise that your smartphone and WiFi is injuring your body and mind all the time.
This needs more views
Turn off your phone and make silence for days! Your body needs that, the silence has the power to understand what's happening to the world. Open your eyes to see truly.
Everyone has time to change!!!!!!!!
By the way, read, read and read every single day.
Crazy for me to believe that 7 years ago, people were addicted to phones.
It sounds less to do with an addiction to smartphones themselves then it being social media/communication addiction with smartphones being the new favourite medium to access those features.
The guys in the prision agree with this video.
I put my phone in my bag with the ringer turned off. When I leave for my lunch break I check it for messages. Then I put it away. Then I check it before I leave to go home. And then when I get home I turn it off and put it in a drawer.
Very good presentation.
Wow when I was a kid I wasn't allowed to use smartphone and when I started using it after 3 years I switched it with a flip phone to make life better 🤔
What a Smart man😍👌😊
he isnt
Amazing video. Thanks for sharing
And FOMO... whatever you do, you are gonna be missing out on something else.
I completely understand but smartphones are a blessing and a curse in my opinion some people in those comments saying before computers and smartphones were simpler times it really depends not everyone has the same opinion I mean I am grateful that they made those electronics
ive been slowly weaning off obsessively checking instagram every time i get a chance to, and ive made a choice to never be on my phone meanwhile eating :) working on it
Smartphones have a real good chance of being the Mark of the beast
Are you religious?
Amen
ya worst thing that could have happened to our society., i hate my cell phone but yet i feel i need it for contacting people and getting things done #fml #addicted
the irony is i wouldn't be watching this video without the iPhone or laptop screens
Very Inspiring ....
Insightful!
In prehistoric times man carried around a stick. The smart phone has become our stick.
Crazy Uncle Mike On a fax, haha
:D I still miss that old Razr!
It’s very sad what the world is becoming!!!
im back... 3 years later and I pose the same questions again.
What's your question sir?
@@mryup6100 HOw come we don't grab our toasters and crockpots every 2 minutes all day long every day ??
same question 4 years later ..again
Don't think smartphones are an addiction?, ask anyone you know & say "I'll give you $100 & I'll take your phone for ONE day"....this deal, this dare won't last the entire day. Now, I dare you to randomly try this with a friend, at a random time of the day with no notice or previous discussion on the topic...your friendship will be severely tested.
Tysm
You just know there's gonna be comments from people watching this on their smartphone regarding the fact that they're watching this on their smartphone.
Great thank you.
No, thank you sir for watching!
Okay I going on Digital diet ie uninstalling crap app and turning off notifications for all except some important ones..
I often leave my phone at home if I'm going out especially for my me time
He should have touched on how many people die taking selfies every year. That's some scary stuff
ill have to search that on duck duck go lol
nice conclusion
Irony - the ad before this was for a smart phone lol
Smartphones aren't bad, it's the social media that's bad.
When people ask me for my phone number they look startled when they figured out it's the prefix of a landline.
it's really helpful!!!
How is it look like for other who can't afford to have the Internet connection and smartphone and not knowing the use of smartphone? Thank
Awesome
I don't have friends and I find it hard to make friends so I'm just with my phone all day
it's not mainly for others or what others may think of you, it's for your self-care and solitude
My phone is a phone, I.e. I can only talk to people with it, social media, I look out the window
