My weakness and addiction to the Internet has destroyed my concentration, many relationships, and generally made me unsocial. When I have to leave my house, I can't wait to get back home and get back on the computer. I've wasted years that I will never get back. I've destroyed my own life with technology.
Same. I dropped the few other hobbies I had years ago. I don't know what to do with myself when I'm not on the computer. I think it's made my vision much worse too.
Honestly I would love to get back the time with my kids when they were little and I was gaming trying not to think about my failing relationships. The moral of the story, life is short. Internet/games/virtual stuff will always be there. Accomplishments there don't mean as much as in the real world.
From the web... "What is the answer to 99 out of 100 questions? Money. It is not the publicly-held companies. It is the power of money to control, persuade, influence, or even empower."
I go on my smartphone too much though don't watch much TV, I was thinking about how society is staring at one screen or another a lot of the time and made something on here, if anyone wants to see it?...then just type in search bar above the following title.....'Addicted to a screen'
When I dramatically cut my technology use, I was finally able to read books again. I went years with out reading because I couldn't concentrate enough to read a few pages let alone a book.
hmm interesting, maybe that's part of my issue. i can no longer read at all. My concentration and attention span is gone. Im definitely addicted to the internet. I can't even sit down and watch a movie all the way through without being on the internet at the same time.
Yeah the internet definitely creates attention span issues for a lot of people. It's taken me a year but I'm finally at what I would call "normal internet use" I might spend an hour on the internet everyday. I wish you luck with your addiction starvin marvin
March 10, 2024 -- I have so much respect for this lady. Sad that she died of cancer but her voice, work and books can continue to be accessed and are quite relevant to this day.
You never really know how addicted you are to the internet and how productive you can be until you no longer have it. A year ago we didn't have the Internet for like 2 months or so. And before when our internet was not on I got really bored. I started writing and I'd be angry all the time. I was agitated and on edge. I would come home from school and try the computer to see if it would work. I couldn't focus on anything. I was bored mad. Within the last year I spent a few months off the Internet at home and I started reading. I read a new book every few days. And over time my writing improved and I found myself speaking clearly and I felt a lot better and more productive. Now I'm back to using the Internet and feeling wrong. I'm thinking about taking a break or lowering my usage of Social Media.
ashley778909 I agree - the saddest thing I see in terms of internet addiction is parents head down in their phones when they are out and about with their kids. It's really sad!
I used to read 3-5 books a week before internet was as prolific as it was. From 1998-2003 I would tear through books in hours flat, it gave me great writing skills, so much that I was graded at a masters level when I was in grade 7. The internet has completely stopped that, now I struggle to even read through a few chapters at a time, and get distracted quite easily. It has a very pronounced effect on ones being, something thats addressed not nearly enough in todays society.
At some point I removed the internet from my apartment for around 3 months. I was attending an art school at the time and the first difference I noticed was that I was able to study for things I wasn't interested in at all. We had an art history exam. I didn't have any interest in the subject, but yet I had no problems sitting down and study for it. I gained the discipline of a samurai. My creativity could also run freely. I had lots of ideas in my head and had the discipline and drive to make those ideas come true. It was a fantastic time. I think the internet can be really harmful for creative people.
Well I mean it should be used in moderation because we can find information to references that weren't so easily accessible before, but yes there should be boundaries.
Coming back to this a dear friend told me once that it was about self control, because even before the internet some of us were probably addicted to television, radio, music, etc. Throwing away the internet because of addiction is akin to throwing an encyclopedia out the window just because a spider got into it. But yes you are right that people need to be cautious of this behavior.
I've been watching nearly every moment I've been awake since my brother died in 2011. My only social media used to be chatting and emailing my bro. Since he's been gone, so have I, its like we both died in the real world. He was a comedian so he remains on UA-cam also.
Depends on the use. I was very fortunate to have that kind of tech at a young age because it taught me what has now become a sort of job and hobby for me, programming. The issue isn't the tech, it's what they do with the tech that harms them.
i respect your opinion. counter argument: giving an iPad to a child, putting youtube kids on for them, turning on autoplay and leaving them to their own devices is a harmful and unwise action
I seriously believe that internet/video games/ porn cause some kind of brain damage. I used to be so intelligent growing up. I was the top of my class. When i was 16 my Father bought me a laptop and i started spending hours online and also watching porn. I also played a lot of playstation. All of a sudden my cognitive abilities declined. I started developing social anxiety and depression. Was it the internet? Maybe. But all i know is every time when i spend a lot of time on the internet / video games/ porn it ruins my mind.
SonyCamry same 😫😫 I also used to be intelligent and topper of my class 😭but I got a phone after 10th grade and the internet ruined my life I also started developing anxiety and depression and now I can't even focus on my studies and I've started failing in exams 😭😭😭😭 I don't know what to do I'm ruined 😭😭😭
I am constantly on the internet because I feel like I learn something new each moment I'm on the net, whether I'm watching a UA-cam video or reading a news article and the comments. I don't watch internet porn or play online games or do chat rooms anything. I feel anxious if my phone isn't with me.
A person may not be hurting other people, but may be harming him or herself. Loss of appetite, erratic sleep patterns, inability to motivate oneself outside of internet use (ie: clean the house, shower, take the dog for a walk, etc.) The best friend in your head cannot replace a stroll through the park with a real-life friend or going out for coffee. The touchable world is not instant in gratification, but the internet world is. There can be a conflict of emotional reality between the two. It's like living in a bubble of illusion when a person is on the internet to the exclusion of participating in the world. Communication breaks down in real-time interactions. The internet can be a narcotic balm for the depth of loneliness that far too many human beings feel. On the internet, you can control the environment...or at least in theory you can. Some people can't find the strength to do that, and there are those tragic stories of young people committing suicide because some other user decides to harass them into an emotional state where they feel unable just to turn the machine off and walk away.
***** But, as you say, you are spending time exercising, cooking, and hanging out with people. That is a lot of time not being on the internet and probably doesn't qualify under my own definition of internet addiction. When I had my internet addiction, I never cooked meals, exercise was on the treadmill while listening to UA-cam videos, and I didn't want to hang out with friends or go anywhere with my boyfriend. I wanted to stay at home and do something on the internet (UA-cam videos, shopping online, social media, or Netflix). I would try to do stretching but I would end up on the internet while on my stretching mat for hours. You may spend a lot of time using the internet, but it doesn't sound like you have an addiction, or at least a severe one.
This is exactly me. EXACTLY. I love to Research Anything on the web.. I hate reading books but I'll read the shit out of any online tutorials for Hours.. lol I'm torn at the same time as I feel Information is a Human Right and should be free. Connecting to the Internet should be free IMO...
yes! you are one of those curious and anxious minds, but i bet you if you go offline and cut yourself from internet , well atleast i believe that that same time can be used to learn something more career oriented or education oriented and that feeling of achievement will be much more than learning many random things off the internet . if you are a student such mentality can seriously wreck your scores and grades , root cause being concentration. PS- me too sailing on the same baot.
L Vega I have the exact same problem. Social media is not as big of a problem for me that I'm constantly researching new information in terms of education. On the surface that seems like a good thing but I can't unplug and it's driving me nuts.
+riri nasir read Power of Now (Eckhart Tolle) I recommend also listening to Allan Watts or Deepak Choopra..... You should be happy your not living slums of other countries because you can watch youtube in your gadget/gizmos
Edward Pierce Well people in slums should be happy that they're not in some alternate reality with their skin peeling off and vomit being shoved down their throat every second in front of a crowd of 100,000,000 jeering spectators.
I just read (in 2021) that screen time starts thinning the neocortex (thinking ability) even in adults (brain fog, anyone?) and impairs our executive function skills as well. It's not just a dopamine addiction, which is bad enough, long hours on the screen are causing mental impairment. Right now, many of us are isolated due to lockdowns, and we're more prone to screen addiction.
+TheRichie213 addiction isn't a fun joke that you just get to be like LOL im addicted to youtube LOL im so quirky. Its a serious issue that implies a history of abuse.
+NT Guy - I don't know why you think that the original commenter was joking. Maybe he was but I wouldn't just assume so and scold him. I actually *am* addicted to UA-cam. Like how an alcoholic is addicted to alcohol. It's not funny. I have been in my exercise room for 3 hours with zero exercise done because I got distracted multiple times by the internet, mostly UA-cam. I'm on this video now trying to get help and I'm guessing that's why the original commenter is too.
Wanted to maybe write this in a journal but maybe I could write it here in case anyone relates, I’ve been struggling with depression for a while now and I used to think my digital addiction was a result of it but I actually now think its vice-versa. Im feeling sad and tired all the time because I’m so much more concerned with enriching my digital life than my real life. Im only happy when Im watching tv or when I’m scrolling and once I’m pulled out of it to go to school or work or even to hang out with friends, I get frustrated and all I do is count the time until I can endlessly watch or scroll again. It was enough to make me think that I will never be happy, I will never love my job or love what I’m learning or connect deeply with people. I have no hobbies, I feel lonely, and Im anxious when Im out of the house. This addiction is real and I am just now coming to terms with it. Ill try out this 48-hr detox next weekend and come up with some more strategies to combat this. Maybe now that I found the root of my depression and anxiety I can cope with it much better. Glad I found this video, its validated what I’ve been thinking...
Just want to say you’re not alone. I definitely think depression is connected to pretty much all addictions. It’s a way for us to escape and cope with unpleasant feelings. Here’s to healing and coming out better on the other side.
I'd like to see the whole internet shut down for a month or two so that the whole world is forced to interact more and have a complete break from the online world.
Dwell, I only want to see cell phone towers go down. Maybe not for good, but maybe for a few months, long enough for people to be forced to start thinking for themselves, rather than going to their cell phone to look up something and remembering/learning how to interact with human beings in a healthy way. My boyfriend's cell phone tower DID go down a few weeks ago for about 1 day. He was finally forced to use my land line to talk to his net work provider and he would often say I don 't need my landline! lol He got it straightened out and can use his cell phone again, but I was glad to see that it can happen and it proved to him that it's a good idea to have a land line.
She did not stress enough most important point - Internet is Actually BAD. All those lies we tell our selfs that we have more and easier access to quality information are WRONG. Information is USELESS without practice (action). Same as money is USELESS without ability to spend them. MORE easy information and MORE easy "COnnections" is NOT NOT NOT good. That what she had to stress about. Being half addicted is the same (almost) as being addicted. Scientific fact we have to learn is - a lot of INFROMATION IS BAD. Same as a lot of SUGAR is bad, a lot of sitting is bad. Internet is actually HARMFUL. NO need to idealize and godify it.
As a kid I went to a 2 week camp a few years in a row. It was amazing- everything was structured (with choices, but sitting around in the tents wasn’t one) and we had only 45minutes after our swim-time/showers to lay in our beds for a nap or whatever. I lost so much weight and it really helped kickstart my fitness journey. ❤️
What a great talk, a lot to think about for sure. I've been addicted to internet and social media in the beginning. I was 12 when I had my first computer and I think around 13 when I had internet at home and it's always been struggle to balance it. I needed to learn for myself what was ' too much time' and figure out that spending hours online wasn't making me happy at all. I felt even more sad and sorry for myself, jealous of all the cool people who did wonderful things, who had ' a life'. I've changed over the years, learning that people mostly lie on the internet and only show the good things in their lives. I'm now trying to see the internet as a tool to learn, connect and grow and it's helping me spend less time online. I really liked Dr.Young's three tips, they sound so simple but it's really hard at first. But, it does help so I'll keep doing it, with ups and downs.
+Jonét Harry There r 400 different approaches to counselling. Some r better in dealing with addiction than others. Client-counsellor relationship is also paramount. Find counsellors who r very knowledgeable in the field (a specialist maybe). Cbt is good n gives good results, but sometimes not really long lasting. Gestalt therapy is very good to deal with addiction. Many other types too. But a good counsellor would probably utilises various approaches rather than one. I had chosen different approaches/counsellors at different stages of my addiction. I am learning psychology at Uni too now, so I know the effects of things on our brains and emotions and behaviours. With things like these the clients normally don't realise how much power they have within themselves. It can be done, trust me.
Download free program "Cold Turkey" for PC and AppDetox for android. They are really easy to use, really intuitive, and will give your conscious mind great leverage over impulsive behaviour.
I used to heavily disagree with idea of technology being addictive for years. I'm 20, and I completely agree now. If I was forbidden or restricted in using internet, I think I would have never come to this, and one day when I get "off the chain", I would completely destroy my life, not ever stopping to take perspective. Please don't be harsh when you limit your kids and loved ones. Only give them perspective, wisdom and love, but do not restrain or limit them. They need to see it for themselves.
Summary: Gaming addiction should be quit cold turkey. Internet addiction is similar to food addiction, which cannot be quit cold turkey. Instead, just like food diet, we should control the internet to positive usage only.
I found out how to use the internet as a kid and never realized how addictive it is. Here I am 20 years later with social anxiety, shut-in behaviour and nothing to show for it but depression. Do NOT let the internet ruin you. You deserve better and you can do better.
I end up staying up till 1:00 a.m. or later, I lose track of time at night on the internet. It is causing me to lose sleep. Actually I should say "I" am causing me to lose sleep with my lack of self control and discipline.
well I mean.. yeah you're right in a way but Im addicted to internet because I dont have friends or a social life, and Im homeschooled, so I have to be educated through recorded videos of teachers explaining stuff. the internet is just a replacement for life.
The internet is supposed to be a tool, not something that uses you. You use the internet, not the other way around; the internet using you. Its all about balance.
No, the problem is that everyone, including yourself, are on the Internet. Even if you quit, you won't have a social life or friends because everyone else will still be looking at their phones. Being home schooled is a whole different challenge. But I will say this, living on your own with time to reflect on yourself isn't as bad as society would have you believe.
To add onto that, if you didn't have the Internet to sublimate your lack of a social life you would feel more motivated to reach out and get one. But in using the Internet as an escape mechanism for that void, remove that need and thus motivation.
@@JamesWillmus Agreed, James. I'm a non-addicted cell phone user and want to make more friends, but as you said, many people are addicted and on their phones constantly, enough to really turn me off and make me not want to start talking to them. Indeed, I've gotten to where seeing people constantly looking at their phones as become a major pet-peeve to me and has made it a little difficult to be around people.
@@lynnwalker3503 I can relate to that! It's a deal-breaker for me- if someone i see or meet has their cell phone 'glued to their hands', I have little interest in engaging them, or pursuing any kind of personal relationship with them ; they're obviously already in a relationship with their phone, so why bother with them!?
Sometimes I wonder whether the fight against internet addiction is a battle we lost a long time ago. Everywhete you look, on trains, flights, waiting rooms, malls, classes people are just glued to their screens
Marija Grujicic It is my fervent hope that you, Marija, won’t acknowledge my comment because you have recovered from your addiction and no longer visit UA-cam or get notifications. I’m writing it for those who are still addicted. First, take heart from the doctor’s examples of all the types of people who have received treatment. Let us assume that many recover. You can too. It will be painful. Now you have to be willing to give up all of your Internet activities, if the digital diet doesn’t work for you. Digital nutrition is a bit of a joke I think. Books are better.
Thank you for sharing your insight. I think it's important to note, as you do, that you aren't talking about quitting technology or quitting the internet - which might be impossible - but likening internet addiction to a food addiction. You need to set boundaries and know your limits. Responsible use in moderation. Thanks.
I like when the lady when she talk about the different addiction that we have through out our life and it mostly our young teenagers and college students.
2-3 years ago I wouldn’t have agreed because of ignorance but now I know how gaming and internet addiction ruins your life. Just keep a balance between everything and prioritise your well-being.
Since I had my iPhone , 4 years now , I've been addicted to my phone/internet ever since. I'd be ok with it if I weren't consciously aware of my problem but I am , I think about how I can't get off it all the time. I'm tired of it.
How come you didn't uninstall it like I did?! I wish it were hardcored into the electronics. Ahh, who am I kidding, I'd probably rob on old lady to go buy a new pc like a typical crackhead.
I’m lonely since childhood to now 21 years old. I have been addicted to the Internet since I’m 5 years old. My parents don’t care about how I grew up at all. I have begun to try to overcome my addiction two years ago. It is very very struggle. I still not success in beat it. That ruined my life.
One day I promised myself that I will check my phone at 11 am and 5 pm. And I found that I have a lot of time and I did a lot of my tasks. I did not continue but I am going to be more aware of my behaviour.
Wow! At first, I didn't like the word "addiction" being associated with "screens" (other than pornography), but it's all about the brain's reward system isn't it? Very useful info. Thanks so much.
Such an important subject. I wish you would have mentioned how the big social media companies do everything in their power to get people hopelessly addicted. It's not just a question of users having willpower and reducing usage.
Thank you Janelle. My life's work has to been educate others on the possible downside of Internet use and its potential for addiction. Hopefully for each us, we can find a positive balance with using technology without being consumed by it.
E così ancora mi ritrovo ad ascoltare questa bellissima lezione ricordandomi di quando ebbi la fortuna di ascoltarla a Milano durante il Primo Convegno Internazionale sulla Dipendenza da Internet.
One of the very most important things NOT to do is wait for government to fix our woes. People are perfectly capable of fixing internet addition problems WITHOUT government intervention.
I just completed a course through University of Colorado on Gender Differences in Learning Processes and the course was largely based on Gurian's research. In the course text, research that suggests young children (before 3rd grade) who are allowed to play lots of video games and use technology unbridled are indeed making strong neural connections. However, these connections tend to be ones in the right hemisphere of the brain, and that AT THE EXPENSE OF THE CONNECTIONS in the left cerebral hemisphere. The left side is used for verbal-linguistic tasks. No wonder we are seeing more and more reading deficits in students!
Mothers addicted to internet is the worest thing ever happened to families. Those mothers will produce more children who addicted to the internet. Sad future.
just check out a few research-based videos. there are plenty out there. it might sound goofy that people can become addicted to something, but it really can happen.
***** I totally agree with you that Drs and companies can have ulterior motives. It is a shame. However, that doesn't take away from the reality that the internet can be an addiction. People don't need pills or a higher power to quit. I have seen people kick addictions without these resources. I am not a big advocate for pills because that in itself can turn addictive. I believe that God has helped some kick addictions. But when it comes down to it, the addict has to WANT to kick the addiction. Usually it doesn't happen until the pain of the solution is less than the pain of the problem.
***** You bring up an interesting point! I am sure internet addicts are able to conjure up some change for their addiction just as poor homeless people are able to scrap together some change for their next bottle of beer or their next drug.
They wouldn't be happy to hear this but I have a suspicion Aspergers is related to mothers who didn't make enough eye contact because they were glued to the screen. Breast feeding is likely harder with a mouse and keyboard at your hands too.
This is explaining a technology addiction, not an internet addiction. This is a good start to talking about internet addictions but I think until it goes into more depth about the actual internet and not just people looking at devices too much it should be renamed: replace "internet" with "technology".

you are going to get more useful information from the internet than with people that are closer to you, what they can talk about? the weather? when in the internet you can get a deep knowledge on any subject.
I am seriously so much addicted to the internet I thought to deactivate Fb and isnta stop me from using the internet but now I am addicted to youtube whatever the youtube recommending me I always click and saw the whole video all day long I am just watching videos instead of studying. I open my laptop for studying but get distracted every single time!
Totally agree. I deleted my Instagram account a month ago, and I've never ever been happier! The only one left is Voicely, but it makes me feel better and helps with anxiety a lot.
I would say that this all started with television and possibly radio. I am the original TV addict having been born in the early 1950's. My parents had to order me out of the house to get me to go outside and play. I'm a senior citizen now and just got rid of my TV a few years ago. I have found myself to be prone to internet addictions of all types. I just uninstalled 3 video games yesterday and came up with a better alternative for gaming: board games and in my case wargames. I may make a therapeutic video to that effect sometime soon. When I find my life at a standstill because of various addictive behavior I evaluate and analyze my situation, I look at alternatives for a constructive solution to whatever problem is standing in the way of my progress. You can too.
What kills me about these videos is that she's talking about a very real issue but then the solution is essentially "Don't do this thing that you know you are doing that is destroying your life. You know, just don't do it"
I know i am internet addicted when i just watch some random videos i would never search to watch on purpose, and when i postpone some things to do coz i want to just sit and look in my screen ( for hours..).. i am against any governmental regulation though
With new technology like apple watch or smart speakers, people are constantly connected more than ever. Companies are trying to make "connecting" as easy as possible. Internet addiction is not getting better, but starting to move from an illness to a new norm. This trend will definitely continue. Smart glasses, VR, BCI are the examples of new tech. Will people abandon reality, and be swallowed into online world?
I originally used the Internet as an escape from my life and problems but now I’m always wanting to retreat to it. It’s isolated me from my family and I think I should get some help for it.
Vent\\ Agreed, I feel completely isolated from real life. I was exposed to the internet when I was 7. I have a hard time feeling close to people now. I feel so lonely irl. But when I'm on the internet, I have so many people with the same interests.
More vent//(sorry) But recently the dopamine reward I get when I'm on social media is lacking. now I feel if I don't get help now I'll fall into depression. :((
I'm addicted to the Internet, or rather I have built an exceedingly strong tendency over the years to access it in excess. Working on fixing that though, but it's definitely real.
I have a wekness to internet addiction.I want to become a doctor and study medicine but my addiction is holding me back and I procrastinate on my studies which will help me get to med school using the Internet. The Internet makes me a mindless zombie and destroys all my productivity and creativity and hence I am going to stop my addiction and get back to work to try and save my future. I will review this comment from time to time about my progress.
internet addiction is essentially a (by)product of companies marketing themselves well if you wanna fight internet addiction you have to be more marketable than apple, twitter, steam, etc
biggest problem that corporations NEED you to be addicted, even researches used not for saving people, but to addicting them more on all sides... games, videos, services, "sharing of ...", "reading"
I have accepted my addiction and I will embrace it until I finally transcend into a computer where I live forever in the ever expanding universe that is the internet.
It used to be the kids were watching TV 24 hours a day, no one cared then. . Now everyone are getting excited about the internet, there is no difference except the people program their own minds with the net, the TV chooses what programming the people get.
I'm addicted to youtube when I'm home, I get fascinated by porn, but I don't have any impulse for illicit drugs or online gaming or gambling. Seeking death and living life all at the same time.
Unfortunately this is becoming even more true with time even if compulsory information seeking disorder is an extreme form of internet addiction. I hope that people in the future will more often know that internet addiction is an addiction on a similar level as casino addiction and with that, will be more able to cope with it ☹️
"Digital Nutrition" is nive to hear about; it combats the toxic oversimplification of digital control that ONLY involves time schedules, which more often than not works counterintuitively especially as a parent. To restrict something without a proper incentive or genuine personal investment will only cause an artificial scarcity for a resource that inherently has value when used properly, and will make the craving much stronger and natural. It's much more important to be conscious of the impact of digital overindulgence and be personally motivated to change and become independent of the digital world. It's much more sustainable than doing it vainly or because it was demanded. WE need to be involved in the change.
What do you do when you use the Internet to read ebooks and research really esoteric topics because the community you live in doesn't foster or care about that?
Over the last couple years ive been struggling with gaming and youtube addiction . I tried to quit a couple times but then i always fall back into that old pattern i realy dont know how to escape from that hell. Im considering to shut it down completely but then again i feel like all the stuff i learned on the internet is worthless when quitting.
Rave2DaGrave it'll be very hard at first but try to just turn it off and go maybe one night without it or just one hour without it. maybe you can try something new like a new hobby in place of it to take your mind off of it or something idk i'm not like a pro or anything but i think you just should at least try! you are stronger than you think!!!!
The thing is, i deleted all my games. I stopped playing pubg and mlbb but then i got addicted to watching tv shows and drama. I get such immense joy i get overly obsessed and i keep wanting more. Idk . I had a whole schedule to study and it has become messed up. Its like i replaced one form of internet addiction to another form. The thing is what productive and enjoyable thing is there, that can be alternative of internet? Especially during quarantine.
Im 17 right now. Ive ruined my life because of this internet. Its all my fault too. I shouldve focused on my studies instead of using the internet . I've wasted so much time because of it . I hope that I can recover from this.

Internet addiction needs to be taken seriously.

It does. It causes so many problems that can even lead to drug addictions. 😕 sounds strange . But it's true.

You can't be addicted to books. They have no reward system. Don't play down real addiction.
You obviously have no idea what you are talking about.
March 10, 2024 -- I have so much respect for this lady. Sad that she died of cancer but her voice, work and books can continue to be accessed and are quite relevant to this day.
My internet went off for 3 minutes
I met my family
They were nice people
Lol :)
😂 😂 😂
So original lol
Talk to each other? Are you kidding? Somebody might get killed...LOL:)
Lmaooooooo, they were nice people 😅
You never really know how addicted you are to the internet and how productive you can be until you no longer have it.
That's very interesting, thank you. How has it been going now?
The times I've had no internet were some of the happiness, most productive times of my life. I am addicted and working on getting un-hooked.
I agree
At some point I removed the internet from my apartment for around 3 months. I was attending an art school at the time and the first difference I noticed was that I was able to study for things I wasn't interested in at all. We had an art history exam. I didn't have any interest in the subject, but yet I had no problems sitting down and study for it. I gained the discipline of a samurai. My creativity could also run freely. I had lots of ideas in my head and had the discipline and drive to make those ideas come true. It was a fantastic time. I think the internet can be really harmful for creative people.
ye
Well I mean it should be used in moderation because we can find information to references that weren't so easily accessible before, but yes there should be boundaries.
Dang you are right
Thankyou for this insight
Coming back to this a dear friend told me once that it was about self control, because even before the internet some of us were probably addicted to television, radio, music, etc. Throwing away the internet because of addiction is akin to throwing an encyclopedia out the window just because a spider got into it. But yes you are right that people need to be cautious of this behavior.
I've been watching UA-cam videos for the past 8 hours. . . My wake up alarm just went off.
I've been watching nearly every moment I've been awake since my brother died in 2011. My only social media used to be chatting and emailing my bro. Since he's been gone, so have I, its like we both died in the real world. He was a comedian so he remains on UA-cam also.
Done that so many times... but not once for the past year. Maybe older, but yeah, there’s light in the end of the tunnel
I think it's true that giving an iPad for a child is a harmful and not wise action
I'm so glad somebody finally addressed this! Having this in mind has seriously changed my life for the best.
Congradulations. You have completed the first step to solving a problem. Recognizing it. Now find out ways you can fix it, and do it! You've got this!
You can turn that around now that you are aware. Once you become aware the fault is your own. You got this!
OMG SAME SAME SAMEEEEEEEE
In some point This is Me
SonyCamry same 😫😫 I also used to be intelligent and topper of my class 😭but I got a phone after 10th grade and the internet ruined my life I also started developing anxiety and depression and now I can't even focus on my studies and I've started failing in exams 😭😭😭😭 I don't know what to do I'm ruined 😭😭😭
L Vega
I have the exact same problem.
Social media is not as big of a problem for me that I'm constantly researching new information in terms of education. On the surface that seems like a good thing but I can't unplug and it's driving me nuts.
Im addicted to internet because i feel lonely.
riri nasir Me too.....
+Cutie Marxist same here
+riri nasir I'm addicted to the internet because the Star Wars trailer is fucking awesome.
I'm addicted to UA-cam!
TheRichie213 you still addicted??
Amen brother....
L Vega hows it going now
Wanted to maybe write this in a journal but maybe I could write it here in case anyone relates, I’ve been struggling with depression for a while now and I used to think my digital addiction was a result of it but I actually now think its vice-versa.
I hope you’re getting in the right track, and reclaiming your life.
I'd like to see the whole internet shut down for a month or two so that the whole world is forced to interact more and have a complete break from the online world.
End of the world lol
Dwellceller I wish it's possible
I can relate to that on a way
r u stooped
lol
Thank you for everything you have done. May you rest in peace Kimberly.
Trying to stop my internet addiction tonight by watching this video on the internet! Grrrr. Hope it helps!!! :)
Do you have a job?
Truelovedreamer 24 😆
did u do it ?
I really wish I could get over this. My life sucks.
Seek help. Reclaim your life back. Unless you're a super disciplined person, don't do it alone. Find support
I've tried therapy before, not for long though. It just bored the heck out of me.
Oh...they are used to block sites and programs, and limit your own time on them.
Summary:
Gaming addiction should be quit cold turkey.
Internet addiction is similar to food addiction, which cannot be quit cold turkey. Instead, just like food diet, we should control the internet to positive usage only.
i'm addicted to ted talks
Now that's a "good addiction". Books are good too ☺
I am addicted to internet, because i want to escape reality
RIP.
According to Wikipedia, Dr. Young died of cancer on February 28, 2019 at age 53.
May she Rest In Peace
Oh she died -that’s far too young. What a loss .
Thank you for your contribution ma'am. I'll read your memoir soon.
Rest in peace.
I have no social skills thanks to the internet
Glad I took the right decision and quit social media.
Sometimes I wonder whether the fight against internet addiction is a battle we lost a long time ago. Everywhete you look, on trains, flights, waiting rooms, malls, classes people are just glued to their screens
The dislikes are from people in denial about their addiction.
starvin marvin i disliked bc i am addicted and her words don't seem helpful
im literally here to learn about my addiction
Marija Grujicic It is my fervent hope that you, Marija, won’t acknowledge my comment because you have recovered from your addiction and no longer visit UA-cam or get notifications. I’m writing it for those who are still addicted. First, take heart from the doctor’s examples of all the types of people who have received treatment. Let us assume that many recover. You can too. It will be painful. Now you have to be willing to give up all of your Internet activities, if the digital diet doesn’t work for you. Digital nutrition is a bit of a joke I think. Books are better.
not joking most of my free time in my 20s was wasted in front of the computer..wasted my 20s on the internet..32 now and don't know what to do
Get a gong and learn how to play it. It will show you the way.
Pick up where you left off.
How are you now?
Dr. Young was my favorite professor at St. Bonaventure!
Im addicted because, I need something that I can escape to. Yet ik how much it changes me emotionally
I feel terrible cause I'm Net-oholic. I'm quitting the Internet for the month of May, hopefully it will help me to overcome my addiction
Bring a baseball bat and Destroy it
@alejandro ponzio no lol
The addiction grows exponentially. The internet addiction in 2020 is far worse than in 2015.
Thank you so much your insight and knowledge! Your work is a great resource for informing therapy in this area.
Thank you Janelle. My life's work has to been educate others on the possible downside of Internet use and its potential for addiction. Hopefully for each us, we can find a positive balance with using technology without being consumed by it.
Good resolution to take: Asking your self what you want to do BEFORE opening your screen.
Oh yeah? How'd you fix it then?
She was so ahead of her time. Brilliant points made.
Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge on such an important issue.
Really unfortunate for the world that the best IAD researcher (Kimberly Young) has passed away this May 2019. RIP, a big loss for the world.
Anthony LDS May God bless her and may she Rest In Peace. 💕
You can feel refreshed after the two day detox but then you start feeling fomo. ( fear of missing out)
Mothers addicted to internet is the worest thing ever happened to families. Those mothers will produce more children who addicted to the internet. Sad future.
+Richard Head it's more than being selfish. it truly is an addiction.
just check out a few research-based videos. there are plenty out there. it might sound goofy that people can become addicted to something, but it really can happen.
*****
I totally agree with you that Drs and companies can have ulterior motives.
*****
You bring up an interesting point!
God bless you and thank you Dr. Young.
I'm way addicted to the internet. It was easier to quit smoking.
This is explaining a technology addiction, not an internet addiction. This is a good start to talking about internet addictions but I think until it goes into more depth about the actual internet and not just people looking at devices too much it should be renamed: replace "internet" with "technology".
Hi, have you found anything that goes into depth?
most of it stems from loneliness. The more social you are, the less addicted.
Which comes first, loneliness or internet addiction?
I could agree more. I would like to interact with everyone I meet but they just want to see their phones. Why?
lady:"talk to people"
me: "but.. but... people suck :c"
But they suck too.

you are going to get more useful information from the internet than with people that are closer to you, what they can talk about? the weather? when in the internet you can get a deep knowledge on any subject.
Still to this day most people don't understand why we are addicted.
They might not understand or want to, that they may be the cause.
I am seriously so much addicted to the internet I thought to deactivate Fb and isnta stop me from using the internet but now I am addicted to youtube whatever the youtube recommending me I always click and saw the whole video all day long I am just watching videos instead of studying. Totally agree. I deleted my Instagram account a month ago, and I've never ever been happier! The only one left is Voicely, but it makes me feel better and helps with anxiety a lot.
Shabbos no phone or internet and its amazing! The best break you can have.
I have anxiety ,internet is my comfort and escape
What kills me about these videos is that she's talking about a very real issue but then the solution is essentially "Don't do this thing that you know you are doing that is destroying your life. You know, just don't do it"
I know i am internet addicted when i just watch some random videos i would never search to watch on purpose, and when i postpone some things to do coz i want to just sit and look in my screen ( for hours..).. i am against any governmental regulation though
When ever I have an option between a screen and a book I will choose the screen every time.
Vent\\
Agreed, I feel completely isolated from real life. I was exposed to the internet when I was 7. I have a hard time feeling close to people now. I feel so lonely irl. But when I'm on the internet, I have so many people with the same interests.
More vent//(sorry)
But recently the dopamine reward I get when I'm on social media is lacking. now I feel if I don't get help now I'll fall into depression. :((
I'm addicted to the Internet, or rather I have built an exceedingly strong tendency over the years to access it in excess.
Are you improving?
internet addiction is essentially a (by)product of companies marketing themselves well
if you wanna fight internet addiction you have to be more marketable than apple, twitter, steam, etc
man unironically posting opinions on yt comments sure is cringe dont shame me
biggest problem that corporations NEED you to be addicted, even researches used not for saving people, but to addicting them more on all sides... games, videos, services, "sharing of ...", "reading"
I was going to end my addiction when I saw this. DOH!
Gonna watch this for a school assignment....
I have accepted my addiction and I will embrace it until I finally transcend into a computer where I live forever in the ever expanding universe that is the internet.
This is literally the metaverse lol
Watching from Brazil . Very very good.
It used to be the kids were watching TV 24 hours a day, no one cared then. . Now everyone are getting excited about the internet, there is no difference except the people program their own minds with the net, the TV chooses what programming the people get.
Love this
I'm addicted to youtube when I'm home, I get fascinated by porn, but I don't have any impulse for illicit drugs or online gaming or gambling. Seeking death and living life all at the same time.
Unfortunately this is becoming even more true with time even if compulsory information seeking disorder is an extreme form of internet addiction. I hope that people in the future will more often know that internet addiction is an addiction on a similar level as casino addiction and with that, will be more able to cope with it ☹️

great warrior
never low self-steem, always a great warrior
This was a really good Ted talk.
Very good talk. Lots to think about.
What do you do when you use the Internet to read ebooks and research really esoteric topics because the community you live in doesn't foster or care about that?
That's more a reading addiction.
I don't know but it doesn't seem to matter. That's why I use it and I'm still suffering the effects of addiction.
@L Vega Which is a very real thing. My brother almost dropped out of med school because of his reading addiction.
Moderate
Good Dr. Young I've been doin' my tesis work based on your work... and with your test ;)
I'm doing something about it. This is getting really ridiculous; been unplugged from Facebook and it's still bad and I mostly work.
Im 17 right now. Ive ruined my life because of this internet. Its all my fault too. I shouldve focused on my studies instead of using the internet . I've wasted so much time because of it . I hope that I can recover from this.
