You need to have your tender on an anchor ball behind you.. also longer drops if you're considering using a dog in a layout rig... but that's the job of the tender.. reallly not something you would ever use a dog for.. no need to brow beat more than you're getting. Be safe! We guide layout hunts on erie, book a trip with an experienced guide to learn some tricks. Good job and safe hunting!
36in drops minimum when gunning dogs with lines, also for layout boat use anchor heavy enough to hold layout plus tender to never drag layout. Can get in scary spots by layout drifting.
Right on, great advice. There are those times when that anchor needs to hold both the layout and tender. In that particular spot it's tough because most of the bottom is just a limestone slab.
That's crazy you can get the hound in with you. Close call getting tangled. Just switched to different longlines and 20" drops to hopefully avoid that. One thing we do to quickly get on cripples is use the unit circle when calling the tender (e.g. 30degrees, 50yds out)
Thanks! The advantages of a small retriever. Using degrees for cripples sounds like a great idea. It seems like we get so many runners when we hunt divers any more!
I never let my lab retrieve with long lines unless I can get to him by wading. Many dogs have drowned doing this. I would keep the dog in the tender boat and drive up on the bird
@@anarchistoutdoors5626 yes, my last lab was strong enough to swim in 2 lines but the one I have now is not as big n strong. I have seen guys run the tender boat near the downed duck and after it is away from the lines and then release the dog to the bird. I may start doing this myself. Great vid and lesson learned is cool. Liked n scribed my friend
I run my CBRin longlines all the time.. I run weighted motherline, and anchor both ends.. . the mother line is 30" below the surface. The only reason that I would never hunt like that, is because you destroying the dogs ears.
It has happened to my Springer spaniel, tangled up the line. Change to single string per decoy. Afterwards no problem. Scary experience I tell you.
Thanks, yeah single lines would definitely do it!

Right on. Lesson learned. As you say we have done well in Texas where we were in knee deep water.

Dude, that was terrifying.
Ha ha I know right. It's still hard for me to watch.
Surf scoter!! Nice hunt .
Thanks! It had been a while since I shot one of those.

You mean because she's close to the muzzle blast?
Rudy hen
Thanks. The color is so similar to a ruddy hen, but the body size looked too hefty to be a ruddy. It might not come through in the video.
Why…? Tender boat can pick up birds. You WILL end up killing your dog doing this. Just not smart to combine dogs and longlines.
For sure! Thanks for watching!
with a dog you have to use like 2 foot dropper lines
For sure need to keep the lines out of her way!
buy a benelli
Thanks, I'll have to take that into consideration!
