It’s awesome! On this day, we were diving around 20-30 feet, but you can certainly find fish shallower if you want to. Water temps in the 60-70° range, wetsuit recommended. Dive time of 1 minute is good to shoot for, which will translate to a ~2 minute breath hold on dry land. If you’re serious about learning, reach out to some folks local to you for mentoring (facebook groups are good for this). This will cut your learning curve and keep you safe as you grow as a diver. Got a sub purely for the production quality. Edit- idk why i didnt think about it earlier, but there is no need to worry about a larger fish or shark come cruising in to steal your catch, no huge goliath grouper or hungry reef shark coming in for a nibble, the former might steal your catch and rough you up a bit taking it, the latter might accidentally bite a finger or worse of trying to steal it. How cool would it if been to see a train go out over the lake to load a boat too, really neat piece of History.

Fellow Wisconsinite freshwater spearo here, been chasing panfish and roughfish in Wisconsin since the early 2000's. I feel your frustration about lack of spearing access for gamefish in WI - I've speared bass, pike, and walleye in South Dakota and Utah, but didn't know about opportunities in Michigan for walleye. Big perch can be had in Lake Michigan around Green Bay last I heard, but we typically dive south central WI and north east WI for big crappie and bluegill. Great content, thanks for sharing.
Right on! The Michigan rules are only about 3 years old. It’s definitely been an uphill battle here in WI. The DNR is pretty afraid of getting nasty emails. You’re on the money with the perch in Lake Michigan/Green Bay. I run an annual spearfishing get together in Door County on the last weekend in July - you should come up this year if you can!
Absolutely, sounds like a blast - once the details are hashed out, feel free to share. My brothers and I take an annual pilgrimage to spear around Rice Lake north of Eau Claire that time of the summer after the southern lakes have turned over, but it would be a pleasure to reroute to the Big Lake to chase some perch again. The ticket for salmonids is cooler water. You can catch them in shallow sometimes beginning in the fall and running through early spring. I’ve personally seen chinook salmon staging for the spawn in September.

Oh you should go to a small town in Michigan called Hamburg, Michigan Ore lake they have some deep drops and some monster walleyes that will not bite most of the time. You might get one in the winter ice fishing.

@base.camp.outdoors I don't know that rule I don't spear fish but Huron River is what makes Ore lake the lake and you get in the river you can hand spear I know that. You get in the back waters of the Huron River there are some big pike and big big carp line braking carp.

I wonder if they'd let me helocast to spear fish in Lake Michigan, that would be fun. Dropped off to fish by helicopter. 😆 I live an hour South of Lake Erie in Lima OH. I gave up doing the Maumee River Walleye run, too many people. I go a few weeks after the rush and still catch nice Walleye without the crowds. I also hit the Indian Lake spillway for Saugeye, some crowds, but nothing like the Maumee.

Yes sir! Spearfishing for gamefish is only legal in certain sections of Lake Michigan & Lake Huron, but rough fish are open everywhere. It’s a lot of fun, just make sure you’re up to date on your regulations. I haven’t personally seen burbot, but the other two fellas in this video, Jon & Riley, have shot a few. The key is cold water, from what I understand
@@rody_bay143 Sure do! They have a more defined blood line than a walleye, so you should be sure to remove that red meat from the fillet. It also helps if you bleed them prior to filleting. With those two steps, though, I think they’re great eating.

@@base.camp.outdoors It would be so fun. I'm 50 now, but I used to a US Army Special Operations SAR swimmer. I'd be spearfishing every day, once I got back in swimming shape. I wonder if they'd let me helocast to spear fish in Lake Michigan, that would be fun. Dropped off to fish by helicopter. 😆 I live an hour South of Lake Erie in Lima OH. I gave up doing the Maumee River Walleye run, too many people. I go a few weeks after the rush and still catch nice Walleye without the crowds. I also hit the Indian Lake spillway for Saugeye, some crowds, but nothing like the Maumee.

Yes sir! Spearfishing for gamefish is only legal in certain sections of Lake Michigan & Lake Huron, but rough fish are open everywhere. It’s a lot of fun, just make sure you’re up to date on your regulations.
I haven’t personally seen burbot, but the other two fellas in this video, Jon & Riley, have shot a few. The key is cold water, from what I understand

@@rody_bay143 Sure do! They have a more defined blood line than a walleye, so you should be sure to remove that red meat from the fillet. It also helps if you bleed them prior to filleting. With those two steps, though, I think they’re great eating.

How long are you holding your breath in these clips it seems like forever
Usually around a minute to a minute and thirty seconds per dive. It’s easier to hold your breath when you’re seeing fish 😂

Yeah, the tricks are the smaller ones taste better, cut out the yellow belly meat on the bottom of the fillet, and get them on ice ASAP.
You have now! Just bleed them and remove the bloodline and they’re good eating
