I've done a lot of diver layout hunting on Lake Erie, I love self filming it and it's such a fun way to hunt ducks. It's definitely humbling, but once you get used to the boat and shooting it's a blast. Great video covering our favorite way to hunt divers!
Still haven't got myself a duck yet. I guess I still have to live the whole experience through your eyes my friend. Keep following your nose boyz! From your Canadian friend Up North.
Welcome to the or back to the U.P. Boys I should say. Divers have been so streaky these last couple years when it comes to staging times streaky migrating times not as consistent then in the past for all of them for sure. More of a trickle effect then a solid consistent push like in years prior. The mild weather this year didn’t help by any means and saw big numbers early to mid November. Hope to see you boys up here again soon ! Shoot straight 🤙🏼
Yes in fact I was stood on shore and said I need to get out in the middle out there. And I built my duck boat and started stacking em. I mostly solo hunted and I had some fine days bobbling around in my 15ft boat in 3ft waves.
Will the next episode include actually cooking and eating mergansers, scoter, and oldsquaw? Don't get me wrong, they are beautiful birds but I would rather eat fish and shellfish than a duck that consumes them. You are what you eat! I do commend you on the series though, well done!
Someday! I want to do this someday! The thing that happened to these guys is exactly why I never have. I can go find birds or switch to pheasants if it isn't happening at home. On a trip like this all the eggs are in one basket.

I hate to be that guy but my only problem is the amount of shells left floating in the water. They will eventually wash up on shore or sink. When I go to a field, I hate seeing other hunters shells everywhere. Last dove season I fired 150 shells and I picked up every one of em. They don't degrade they just breakdown into smaller pieces. The wads are enough, unless you get fiber wads, at least pickup shells.
My first waterfowl hunt in the mid 70's was in St Martins bay which is just east of that same area. Next time come down to Saginaw bay for both divers and puddlers.
Heard them scoters are delish , never killed one but might do a trip next fall , it aint tgat bad as far as prices are concerned i mean any waterfowl hunt will be a couple grand so ...
No. They're using nontoxic shot, probably steel #2s. They run out of energy pretty fast, probably put out an eye after 75-100 yards but not much more. Individual pellets have about as much energy as a BB gun. Hunters stack up pretty close at Fish Point, usually less than 150 yds apart when the ducks are flying. never heard of an accident.

General rule for layout boats is not to sit up but to keep the gunner's head below the splash shield or boat profile. Sure, sometimes a bit harder to see the incoming birds, but reducing the profile is the point of layout boats. And as the overhead shot shows, marsh camo shows up very brightly from above, which is what the ducks may see. Better to use grey camo or a gray or army digital poncho over the jackets; no marsh grass out there in the middle of the water and the layout boat is gray. Danish layout gunners use small white boats and white camo (and pick up their shells); divers come from places where snow is common and white is not necessarily scary for them. On the Atlantic you can shoot scoters easily from a white fishing boat near the decoys.
I almost died in a layout boat once cause the guys I was with anchored bow and stern too tightly and the chop swamped the boat. Luckily they saw me waving and picked me up before I sank too far!
@@ronblackburn3683 I was riding that boat like stationary surfboard almost before I knew what happened. Very thankful for the additional buoyancy provided by neoprene waders

I make them into pepperoni. I actually think the gamey taste helps, weirdly. But they also get "diluted" with other ducks too.
I'd fall asleep laying in that boat.
Lake Michigan actually does have a good population of Oldsaqua and some scoters
That'd be a lifer for me , long tailed don't usually frequent the central flyway but I can dream , oldsquaw probably bad spelling
