I am being awarded a new fully trained Golden Retriever PTSD Service Dog next week. I could not be more excited and hopeful for a very positive change in my life. I arrived in the Nam Christmas Eve 1971. I will get my savior dog 49 years later. Its time.
Yes, absolutely, Matt. Check out Stonnie's videos on training his son to work with protection dogs, where he coaches his son, George (about 12 at the time), in working these difficult dogs. He shows you what a model father looks like--how to both trust and guide your child in some tight situations.
Our family got a golden retriever 2 years ago. I was raised with labs and beagles and spent about 15 years owning and fostering pit bulls. Omg. I told my husband we will ALWAYS have a golden retriever from here on out. I absolutely adore our retriever.
That’s the way me & my family feels too. I’ve had Golden retrievers since I was 3 years old in 1985 & have had 4 since then. Rarely going 2 years between dogs. But sometimes it takes a couple years to get over a broken heart from losing your best friend. I hunt upland birds with my field bred Golden -mostly pheasants. I would love to have a pointing breed also, but as long as I can only have one dog- it will always be a Golden. Golden’s are underrated hunters IMO, my Golden’s have always been better hunters than my buddies bird dogs including Brittney’s & Labs. And that’s not just me thinking my dogs were better- it’s my buddies agreeing with me. I would love to have a Llewelyn setter though. I think the pair of a setter & a retriever would be the ultimate upland hunting duo.
I can't tell you how much I enjoy watching your videos, dogs always bring a smile to my heart. Mine have been gone a very long time and I still miss them. I also tend to favor labrador retrievers, as opposed to Golding retrievers for the exact same reasons Labs are less maintenance. I also love your training methodology. 👍👏👏❤️🐾

My two Golden Retrievers back in the day were woods dogs. Pretty sturdy. Snow. Mud. Ponds. Swamps. Mississippi River. We came home dirty and very happy.
I went on a 40 minute hike recently and then brushed seeds out of my golden’s coat for an hour. She’s always SO happy to be adventuring but the struggle on my end is real, lol.
Me too! After having a Golden in your life there just isn't any other breed for you! I do so miss my last one. For 9 yrs it was just he and I. I got him a week before my husband found he had pancreatic cancer and was gone a month and 3 days later. My pup was there thru all of it. Goldens just make life better, no matter what you are going through!
Over 28 yrs loving Goldens...lost my last one in 2020 ...still have 2 other dogs but miss my Golden more than I can say...if you've had you know what I mean!
I do hunt tests with my three year old Golden Retriever (Logan), who is conformation bred. I can see why if you have a lot of dogs to care for you would grow weary of clean-up. I only have the one, but after he gets in the pond and smells like a swamp dog, it takes about two hours to do a full grooming - only about an hour if it’s just a shampoo/blow dry situation. He’s the best though.
I watched this video multiple times before I got my golden puppy (mostly out of excitement) and now that he’s here and six months old I’m back to say this is still the most useful and accurate info I’ve seen about the breed. I absolutely adore my golden and I’m so excited to see him grow up!!
We love our Goldens!!! We have 3 and they are the best dogs ever. Several friends have Goldens too. So smart, loving, and friendly. They love their humans! Each one has their own temperament though and it's fun to see how they interact with people and each other. You can't go wrong with a Golden ❤️.
This makes me cry. I had a wonderful golden who was dark like Cole I had her for 12 years and bought her when she was 11 weeks old. I trained her myself by reading some books. (No internet then). She was so smart and learned many commands. I wish I would of trained her for agility. Some day I will get another and it could also be a Labrador.
I have never been serious about formal training ( too lazy) and never had a dog that behaved badly. Could be good luck but I attribute it to spending a lot of time with them. Lots of long walks in the woods and Sjoring they go everywhere that we go. If the dogs are not welcome we don't go. We have rescued mostly but not all purebred Goldens(most human-like), Labs(wonderful), English Setters(sensitive, sweet,& most energetic), and a Plott hound (my favorite, most athletic). Most of them got off to a rough start in life, but they all blossomed. It is great to see you spending this time with Charlotte, I predict the payback will be huge.
Finally am a homeowner & I can’t wait until I get my first Golden 🥲! By the end of spring 🤞🏽 I’ve been educating myself about the breed for the past 6months and get more excited with every video
Thank you so much for sharing this info about Golden Retrievers! My service dog in training is an English Golden (light fur, dark round eyes, lower build). Emphatic yes to the mouthiness and friendly nature. Also...stubbornness. A quick search of "dog refusing to move" will bring up more than a few videos of pancaked Goldens refusing to end a walk. This stubborn streak is great for intelligent disobedience in service work. My dog alerts to changes in my walking pattern before a fall. He will NOT let me move until my balance stabilizes. If I insist and keep wobbling he crosses in front of me and stands on my feet. His idea. It works well, so I keep it in his task list. However...this stubbornness borders on belligerence when he's off duty and wants his way. He turns passive resistance into a game. A long game. Worth knowing this tendency if one is considering a Golden. Time consuming, and absolutely worth it IMO. Charlotte says it perfectly...100%.
We had to put our 13yo golden retriever down a few weeks ago. We rescued her when she was about four, and she was just the sweetest dog, with a heart of gold. But we're on a commercial farm/orchard, and the long coat was a daily challenge for us and for her. You can't beat the golden personality, but we've decided to go with a greater swiss mountain dog for our next dog, as we've heard really good things about the temperament but the coat will be easier to keep clean.
I know it's supposed to be all about the dogs, but, Charlotte stole the spotlight in this video. She's so cute!! She could have a job teaching kids how to handle a dog. Very sweet little girl
My mom raised goldens in the 60s and 70s. She had champions in hunting and show. They were wonderful dogs. They were great babysitters. Always trying to save us kids when we were swimming in the pond lol
It is really heartwarming to see how the dogs respond to you and the obvious joy they are experiencing. As a hunter who owned and trained a Golden, cannot agree with you more on the coat up keep. Many an evenings were spent picking cockleburs and beggar burs out of his coat. One thing about him, I never did experience a better retriever in the field. He would bring back the birds no matter where they fell and how thick the cover.
Cleaning up my golden's coat after a long hunt is a time I cherish. I get to pet her, check her for ticks, brush her, check for cuts or injuries and pick burrs out. She's typically sleeping on my lap while I do it. I wouldn't trade that for anything ...
I have two fieldbred Goldens and a Jack Russell and your comments about the JR behaviour when of the leash made me laugh with recognition. I have had Goldens all my life and can’t imagine my life without them. ❤️
Mr Stonnie, thank you for giving us a candid look at how you communicate with your daughter and share your wisdom with her. I never had an example of what that looks like so, thank you for being that example for me.

New to the channel and love your approach. Of course, I’ve got a 1/4 of an acre of land but after watching some of your videos I make it a point to take our new nine week old golden to big open spaces where she can climb on stuff.
We were out around town yesterday and met an 8 week old golden doodle, and parents. Soon recognized those qualities in the puppy of a calm, well-mannered, polite, yet attentive dog, that Stonnie works towards. The puppy is off to a good start in life together with it’s new family. Although we don’t have a dog, we watch Stonnie for some dog therapy time of our own.
I have a 2 year old Golden Retriever with 3 legs... he lost his front paw at 6 weeks.. you'd never know he was handicapped, because he's not... he lives with his nose on the ground and his mouth on everything... he lives inside and he's the best.. we potty trained him with a jingle bell tied to the door knob.. he would go ring the bell with his nose when he wants to go outside.... then he started to abuse the bell, meaning he would ring the bell everytime he wanted to go out and play, not just when he had to potty! Lol.....
Just adopted 2 strays both appear to be golden mixed maybe with shepherd but one fits the golden almost to the T with coat and demeanor very smart learns with one command most of the time Appears to be very independent and most definitely goes for scent
I love golden retrievers. And always have one for pheasant and upland hunting. But I also love all hunting breeds. Actually I just love dogs in general. Life is too short and unfortunately we don’t have enough time to own all the different breeds.
Hi Stonnie great video I tend to favor the black Labrador as well, they are less maintenance than a golden. It is very important to find a good breeder. My mother took us to so many breeders to get the right Dalmatian that had a good bloodline.❤️🐾👍👏👏
I have a 10 month old golden. He is extremely hardy and very loving. He loves long hikes and wrestling with his german shepherd friend. Stonnie is right. They do have an oral fixation 24/7.
My bed post at my parents house is still chewed up from my golden puppy. My parents even tried some of that sour apple spray stuff on the post that’s supposed to keep dogs from chewing and she would just lick it off every night, she loved the stuff. She grew out of the chew phase after a few weeks but my bed post is still the same years later
Excellent video. I have a 9 year old field bred Golden. Training her was almost an afterthought. Except for the puppy mouthing. Golden puppies are like sharks.
I have two black labs and another puppy on the way in three weeks. I can't wait. We are fulltime RVing and out for daily adventures. Black Labs are the best in my opinion as well. I am trying to follow your program as much as I can. It's getting me in much better shape. Lol.
Thank you! It was nice to hear about the differences between labs and golden retrievers. There's one more thing I'd like to know. Some labs tend to smell a bit bad (especially when they are wet) . Something that my wife doesn't like. Is that the case with the field bred goldens, too? I have to keep my hunting dogs inside our house so this is a major issue. My field bred springer spaniel doesn't smell bad at all.
Thank you for your videos, Stonnie! I’m quite grateful. I spent hours and hours watching before getting my GSD puppy who is 7 months now. He’s far from perfect but I imprinted him following a lot of your guidance and I can see the difference in him compared to his peers that he trains with. Now that he’s growing, he’s getting a little more difficult but I’m so happy I was able to build a strong foundation in him where he loves to learn, has good recall and just clicks with our family. We are going to train him up and if he’s up for it, one day he might go to work with my wife at her school where she’s a special education teacher. It’s been a lot of work but with your help it’s been a successful experience!
Finally! Someone mentions the Flat Coat. We found one as a rescue, strangely. I wish I had him from a puppy. He would have made a fantastic flushing dog. Loves to retrieve, brilliant, fast, tons of endurance, etc. But, he came to us with a fear of thunder. I tried some very distant gun shots, but he wasn't having it. My field Golden loved hunting, but she was bit lazy unless it involved pheasants/grouse.
Thanks Stonie. Just wanted to echo your thoughts on a few things. We have several Goldens in our family, 2 American dark goldens field bred types and out new addition , an “English” Golden with a thick light cream coat. We live on a lake, I’m retired and have all the time these dogs need. We also have have a Doodle. My son just bought himself a Standard Poodle. Just 1/2 hr ago we had them all playing together. Ine thing I’d like to mention, the two American Goldens are a little higher energy than this English. They are all lovers, swim, dive off the dock and love to please. If you’re a single old guy like me I’d recommend the English line. They are mellower and imho, VERY loyal and stick close to you. Thanks for the great content.
So fun seeing you and your children from afar! Charlotte is turning into a Beautiful young Lady just like her Mother! George looks like he is either even with you height wise or just above? I hope you have a fantastic CHRISTmas and that 2021 will be an awesome year for you and your family!! Will your son be home from West Point this Christmas? Dennis
Storm????? That's my dog's name!!!!!!! Ha. What's a starter-family? That's too funny. Such a feel good vid...thanks for taking us along. Charlotte is one lucky little girl!
in many of your videos you talk about puppy and dog journaling, would you be willing to share some more insight about journaling for those of us who aren't familiar? What does a typical entry for a day include, etc? I can probably guess at the basics, but it would be very handy to see what somebody like you think is important to keep track of. -Thanks!
Hi Stonnie. Always enjoy and learn from your training videos. I'm very excited to be getting a golden in the spring. It's extremely difficult to find available puppies so I'm so grateful. I really enjoyed this particular video. Thanks merry Christmas and a happy healthy new year to you and your family
Maaan, how I miss my golden retriever. Your comparison of labs v goldens matches my own. Put a dish of food on the other side of a brick wall - the golden will run around the wall whereas the lab will run thru the wall
If you want a loving magnet, then you’re good with a golden retriever! Haha. Mine is a show type and he does take forever to clean up but that’s part of the deal and we’re fine with it. We developed strategies to make it faster and efficient. We sure don’t miss out on adventures because of it! He’s my first dog and you’re right on that, they are easy. Love your videos!
Our Charlotte says she would love to come and pick Blackberries in August with your lovely and brilliant Charlotte! Captain I’m sure would love to have some more “progressive exposure” with Mr.NoName as well!! Thx for the great video!!
Is Charlotte available for boarding? Oh my gosh she is just the cutest little girl. Retired RN wanna be grandma here with three single grown boys. Would like to specialize in training cute smart little girls lol.
I must admit that I find you the best of the best in your field. Not necessarily the very best, you are out there with Will from Fenrir. You are my two favourites for different reasons.
I stumbled onto your channel and I am loving your words of wisdom. I will be getting a rescue puppy just after Christmas. Momma is a Golden Retriever and daddy is who knows what! I had a Golden 25 years ago. My last dog was also a rescue and I don’t know what he was. Do you have any advice for socializing in our current socially distancing world. Our local puppy class places are all on lock down.
He's done some awesome videos on environmental socialisation. Meeting other puppies isn't all its cracked up to be (think of a group of toddlers, they're not going to learn much except other pups bad habits!) Finding a few well mannered mentor dogs who can teach pup how to play nicely and be polite will be far more beneficial.
Hey Stonnie and family, another great video! I love the labs too, thicker ones with the big block heads. Is there and breeders that breed my type of dog that you would recommend?
I had a golden retriever he was the best but like you said stonnie the hair maintenance is a lot after he died my cousin friend didn’t want her black lab anymore so I took her she was the best no worries about biting anyone l have grandchildren she was great I also have an autistic grandson my golden and lab were great with him great therapy for him just lost my lab so lost with out her
We have our first Golden, now age 14 months. He learns so fast. He's so sweet and snuggly. The one issue we have is if he knows he's off leash, he will run where he's not supposed to go and look at us as if to say "Nah nah. I'm free." He's run into the road. He comes if I say let's play fetch! But I don't know when he'll ever be able to be off leash around the house. In the fields he's much better about sticking close.
We finally got a shock collar, which is only used in beep mode and no more leash!! 💯 recall! Amazing change. The shock button is never used. The beep just resets his thinking if verbal doesn't work. I'd say he gets two beeps a week and that's enough!
Always have a soft spot for goldens. I would love to see a dog characteristic/video of your thoughts on the rottweiler. There was one in the background of one of your videos and I'm interested in how they stack up to other working-type dogs like the Mals and the Shepherds.
I love your channel I’ve been watching for months. You challenge me to be a better dog owner. I’m a groomer and work all day everyday too. We have 6 of our own dogs and my sons Black Lab turns 1 year old Saturday
I wanted to know the answer to this question for a long time thank you for the video! If I had a choice I'd go with a Golden, but my lab needed to be rescued here in South Korea so I'm just doing my best to give him what he needs, rather than focusing on what I need. Nicely explained video 👏
Best family dogs! So beautiful with children. But the fur! My girl is from show bloodlines and needs to be brushed at least every second day! And I have to vacuum my house twice a day. So worth it though! But yes, so easy to train as they are so very smart!
If a person doesn't like a golden retriever, be suspicious of that person.
Hahaha agreed!
Absolutely, never turn your back.

omg that’s the age when they look the most adorable. so cute!
Who's here watching Stonnje and doesn't even have a dog ?
Just me?
Your funny
No dog license needed to enjoy Stonnies vids lol
We were out around town yesterday and met an 8 week old golden doodle, and parents. Soon recognized those qualities in the puppy of a calm, well-mannered, polite, yet attentive dog, that Stonnie works towards. The puppy is off to a good start in life together with it’s new family. Although we don’t have a dog, we watch Stonnie for some dog therapy time of our own.
Me dawg, gotta prep for the inevitable
Right now I don’t have my own dog but I’m baby sitting once a week a puppy silver lab for a friend and just love watching Stonnie for tips😊
I was watching the golden but also his daughter too. Great father daughter interaction.
She is on her way to being a UA-camr too.
I know you have done the GSP and the wire haired pointing griffon. could you do a video on the German wire-haired pointer
First time watching and I’m hooked!!!
Lol.....
man first time watching your videos, amazing, subscribed. the way u teach and spread wisdom to your daughter is amazing! the world needs more of u
Just adopted 2 strays both appear to be golden mixed maybe with shepherd but one fits the golden almost to the T with coat and demeanor very smart learns with one command most of the time
Appears to be very independent and most definitely goes for scent
I love golden retrievers. And always have one for pheasant and upland hunting. But I also love all hunting breeds. Actually I just love dogs in general. Life is too short and unfortunately we don’t have enough time to own all the different breeds.
We had a golden retriever lab mix. Best dog ever.
Amazing video. Love seeing the fox red labs!!! Well done
Thank you very much!
Your daughter is very sweet... she well be a good well rounded, smart, self dependent person...great parenting....
This is a great pack of dogs you have. 😊
Thank you!
Lol.
Wonderful Father.. Great Trainer Absolute superb Human Being 👌👌👍👍
Thank you!
Having had a Golden Retriever, white with lots of red who came from a family of champion winners, i understand were you are coming from.
It is bearable. However, my Golfen Field retriever is very very energetic, which I had not anticipated. I walk him 2 hours a day and he needs that.
GOLDENS ARE THE BEST DOGS!
Thank you for the great video. I’m a follower now 😊
Yes Stonnie! Field goldens are awesome but need to harness their drive
Dennis
Awesome stuff.. Thanks Stonnie!
The whistle got my Golden's attention
The German Shepard is so cute!!!!
I have 2 Goldens and they are hard, committed workers and easy to live with. A little showshine before stickers makes a coming a sinch.
Thanks for your great videos. I learned a lot.
Are there one with cattledogs (ACD) i the pipeline?
Merry Christmas to your sweet family!
It’s funny you should say that. If you pay close attention, I think you will see why that channel seems so similar to mine.
Nice video like your bib were did you get them???
Looking good ! Keep up the great work Thanks for sharing
I had a golden retriever he was the best but like you said stonnie the hair maintenance is a lot after he died my cousin friend didn’t want her black lab anymore so I took her she was the best no worries about biting anyone l have grandchildren she was great I also have an autistic grandson my golden and lab were great with him great therapy for him just lost my lab so lost with out her
those dogs are so happy - awesome!!!
What a great channel. You are a great trainer.
I've had mine less than one year and he will just head out and I'm no spring chicken. I use a 30 ft long line . hopefully not for much longer
What nice parenting and good advice.
Great video.. Everyone likes a Golden Retriever.. Not everyone wants one..They great family dogs..
I love your channel I’ve been watching for months. You challenge me to be a better dog owner. I’m a groomer and work all day everyday too. We have 6 of our own dogs and my sons Black Lab turns 1 year old Saturday
Dam Stonnie this is so useful. Thank you for sharing !!!.
I wanted to know the answer to this question for a long time thank you for the video! If I had a choice I'd go with a Golden, but my lab needed to be rescued here in South Korea so I'm just doing my best to give him what he needs, rather than focusing on what I need. Nicely explained video 👏
Great video, very helpful, thank you! What about Flat Coated Retrievers? Do you work with them?
I won’t stand a word against the Golden Retrievers. They are the “ Golden Boys” of the canine family. I am owned by one.
That's brown dog green color? Is that a lab? I really like it! Nice videos brother !👍🏼
I guess I will ask the dreaded question. What about Chesapeake Bay Retrievers? They certainly aren't for everyone but I love them.
Trained some golden retrievers that turned a little barky at 5,6 months
So....what did you do wrong?.
Best family dogs! So beautiful with children. But the fur! My girl is from show bloodlines and needs to be brushed at least every second day! And I have to vacuum my house twice a day. So worth it though! But yes, so easy to train as they are so very smart!
For me Golden’s are the best! I have 1 and she is my world❤️❤️❤️❤️🤗🤗
