First play through for me this weekend. So enjoyable! Excellent review, pros and cons on the mark. I think this will be my gateway drug into the genre - am checking out your other videos right now!

Simply excellent. An epic game in a small footprint. Sounds good to me! Thanks Wayne-

I agree with your review. I have played the campaign scenario and the short scenario. The campaign scenarios took a long time as I had to continually look stuff up and get clarifications on BGG. The rule book could be clearer and the double sided chits became a where is Waldo event. I too have play a number of Ben Madison's games- DTOM, White Tribe , Gorbachov- and this is now my favorite game of his. A lot of history and events packed into a small footprint that can be played fairly quickly once you get the rules down. Finally, the components could be better and I wonder if GMT or Worthington published the game how much that would improve a player's impression of the game? Of course, it would then cost more too.

This is probably my second favorite Madison game after Jeff Davis, mainly because of my love of ACW history. There's parts of Global War that could be done better, but there is just so much to love and enjoy.

Dude, I wish you got a commission or something from White Dog, because you sure as hell sold me this game. Excellent review and recap!
I find I'm doing a whole lot *less* impulse game buying - I got burned by paying a fortune for a couple games that I did *not* research nearly enough. So videos like yours are hugely helpful. A game is a significant purchase for po' folks like me, and again, I thank you!

I really appreciate the kind words Joey. And no commissions here, as you know. I do get review copies occasionally, of which Global War was not one (I always mention at the beginning of my videos if a game is). If I got commission every game would be a 10/10. This way, I can keep being honest and educational to help you all make informed decisions!

I guess that's a big reason I value your work so highly. If I can get my finances in order I'd love to show my appreciation to you (and Zilla Blitz) to thank you. The two of you have saved me a fortune already LOL. Anyway, thanks again for what you do!@@WayneHansen

If anything, if you happen to buy a game because of my vids, shoot an email to or post a message on FB to the publisher. Let them know these videos made a difference.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Thanks for all the time you’ve spent in demonstrating the game in your playthroughs, and for this review. I have never looked forward to getting a game so badly! My copy is on order here in the UK - boy, it is a frustrating wait! I have no doubt when I get this game, it is going to end up as one of my top solo games! Dave in Ledbury

Thanks, Wayne, for an excellent overview and review of our game! One thing I wanted to point out that you really got right was how the first few turns are more scripted than the post-Pearl Harbor turns. A lot of the game is an extended setup (the early turns are compressed, covering six months each) which leads into the meat of the game which is 1942-1945. This was a bit odd for me, as I actually find the early part of the war more interesting with all its diplomatic actions, neutrals joining or being invaded, and emphasis on small events in Europe like the invasion of Crete. But on a game of this scale, it's the giant picture that needed attention and that's the reason for the split scale treatment (early vs. late). As you pointed out, why have a game called Global War if the USA and Japan weren't going to go to war?
In the original system (before Wes began his fantastic work on developing the game), it was a little less scripted in the early going. Originally, there was no pre-set "Barb and Pearl" system; instead, you just continued to draw chits until you got a red one (and Russia joined the war) or a yellow one (Japan/USA joined the war). That could generate some weird results -- we had games where Pearl Harbor didn't happen until late 1942 for example. And it meant the Pacific War could break out before Barbarossa. But it meant the game felt less scripted, and when the advanced/optional rules get posted at the WDG page (whenever that is... still working out the details) players will be able to explore that type of game if they want.
Thanks again for your videos -- there is a lot to this game and you really captured the feel of it!

Thanks for your outstanding overview and review! I'm really interested in the First World War. If this is your go-to grand strategic WWII solitaire board game, what would you say is the equivalent for WWI?

I appreciate the kind words! Unfortunately, I don't have a strong recommendation for WW1. You could always check out Kaiserkrieg!, which is the game/game system that Global War here is based on. It's also published by White Dog Games.

@@WayneHansenthis review actually caused me to get The Mog. Was thinking about this because you did make the game look good and was on WDG website…but in the end it just isn’t my cup of tea, and I went “Hey, look…The Mog!” So, thanks.
