Nice review video. Enjoyed the playthrough too. I picked this up during Noble Knight’s recent sale, but haven’t played it yet. I’ll need to get it to the table soon. If it’s too punishing, I might house rule that a draw in a tactical battle has no effect and that enemy sieges get one roll versus two per turn. We’ll see.
I also found myself going out of my way to learn more about the English Civil Wars after playing this game. I agree, that’s probably the highest comment you can give to a historical game. Check out the History of England podcast for an extreme deep dive, or To Kill a King for a really good movie on the subject
You mention the death spiral being a con for the game, And it made me wonder if there are any solitaire (war)games that have some sort of catchup mechanic of some sorts.

Nice overview, very well done. Agree 100% on the history, the game’s narrative is outstanding.
Great review for a great game. The history aspect rally adds to the immersion as well as informative.
I have both versions/editions of Cruel Necessity and enjoy the game. This is the best review I've seen for tackling the pros and cons of it.

It's a great game overall, I bet you'll enjoy it.
Great review, thanks

Thanks for the recommendations Kevin. If it's anything like the History of Rome podcast, it has to be good.

And it made me wonder if there are any solitaire (war)games that have some sort of catchup mechanic of some sorts.
Now i want this.
It seams to me that those bonus cards are rarely used. I think the balance of the game could have been improved if those cards are more useful.
can you play either side solo ?
No. You play as Parliament/Puritanism.
What would you say is the best state of siege game?
So many great choices. Sounds like the topic for a video!
