Verdict! Warfighter Chtorr | Overview & Review | Solitaire
The verdict is in! This is an overview and review of the solitaire, card wargame Warfighter: A Chtorr Special Forces Card Game. Designed by Kevin Verssen (Original system design by Dan Verssen) and published by Dan Verssen Games (DVG).
The Chtorrans are here! You must assemble your Squad of Soldiers to clear them out with Fire, Cryo, and Conventional Weapons. This game takes place in the Modern era and is fully compatible with every other Warfighter Core game. Warfighter Chtorr looks to simplify the system by reducing the number of keywords and effects, while keeping the complexity and decision-making the series is known for. New features:
Field Points! Chtorran bodies that haven't been cooked or exploded can be studies by the science team working with your Squad! Preserve their bodies by not using Explosive, Spray, or Fire Attacks to earn Field Points. Spend Field Points to Spark Skills or purchase new Equipment/Weapons mid-Mission with Radios to help with your fight against the alien threat.
Your Weaponry matters! There are 3 types of Weapons in Chtorr: Fire, Ice, and Conventional. Starting with Fire, these Weapons offer a huge Defeat Cover (Pen) bonus but reduces the Hostile's available Field Points, they also come with very little Ammo, meaning you have to feather the trigger, and use Field Points to resupply more Fuel mid-Mission.
Next is Ice, these Weapons do not inflict direct Wounds to Hostile cards, but instead place Slow counters. For each Slow Counter placed on a Hostile, Soldiers add 1 to their Attack and 1 to their Defeat Cover (Pen) rolls against that Hostile until the end of the turn. This means you can use Conventional Weaponry against Chtorr to preserve their Field Points!
Finally, we have Conventional Weaponry, these Weapons don't have great Defeat Cover (Pen) roll bonuses, but they more than make up for that with quantity of Attacks! These Weapons can perform exponentially more Attacks than Fire or Cryo based Weaponry and most importantly, preserve the Hostile's Field Points! (Unless you Deploy your MG4's Bipod!)

53:20 Wouldn't the Sharma labyrinth have been switched to COIN control upon placing the troops there? Just asking for clarification.
Yep
Appreciate your thoughts on this one, Wayne. I have Warfighter Pacific and enjoy it but I really dig the thought of going on a bug/worm hunt. I like that this one is more "streamlined" than the other versions and, while I do like DVG games, they do seem to "miss the obvious" more often than other publishers (regarding your comments about the lack of counters). As a result, I rarely kickstart many of their games anymore because their first versions seem to always need (sometimes major) errata, are missing something, or maybe need a few more testers to iron out the bugs. Good to see this one seems pretty solid out of the box. That said, I'm really interested in the theme of this one and the artwork looks very, very good. Thanks for taking the time to give us a look at this one. Hope to see more in the future!
I hear ya PD. It's a trade-off between unique and straightforward. DVG does have a habit of releasing a good game that could be great if they just tweaked a few things. Overall, I generally like their games, and this is a really solid effort that I think could fit both new players and those looking for something a little different than the usual. The visual art style is at the top of what I've seen from them. All I hope is that they continue to put out solid games, and even improve. There is even more potential with their systems IMO.
Thx for the review and comments. I have been curious about this version. Right now I only have the original Warfighter, Shadow War, and WWII. Really enjoy these, but now you have me curious about this one and the Vietnam one. Going to watch that video next.
Check it out, Warfighter Vietnam has some really solid aspects as well.

Thanks for the video. Hope it continues.
Wayne, four years since you did this, but I watched Cardboard Commander review his top 10 solo games and he recommended we watch your play-through. So my point? Your video has had enduring impact. Thanks mate
You know, that's really awesome. I don't talk about it a lot, but one of the aspects of my videos I hope is successful is their longevity. People viewing them the first week they are uploaded is great. But knowing a video is watched, and is helpful/entertaining years later, is icing on the cake.
How long does this game normally take? I was looking into this or “The Mission” but not sure which to get. For the record I have “Mr President” and have no issues using charts for things and deal with randomness to deal with.
I talk about how long it takes to play in the review.
Oh ok. I’ll watch it again. Thx
Thanks Wayne you have saved me a couple quid, Chtorr is not for me . But this does seem a better game than fantasy version.
I'm glad my video was helpful! That's always my goal, help people make more informed decisions.
Thank you for the playthrough. When the crawling worm attacked you did not roll for Daren's Cover roll so the crawling worms may have only suppressed poor Daren instead of killing him 😀You can only buy field gear if you have a soldier equipped with a radio and Field skills can only be brought when equipping your soldiers at the start of the mission as they cost resource points to buy not field points the Field skills use the field points in the mission to spark them. And so far, my first mission also ended in failure the monsters are hard to take down, but it is a fun game to play. I plan on doing a mission with soldiers and gear from the modern era to see how long they can survive 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
You didn't happen to drive by a guy screaming about his old Toyota Land Cruiser did you? 😂 Sorry, that's a bad The Mist reference. Really awesome game! Creepy vibes from the creatures and the art is really immersive. Thanks for sharing this!!
My pleasure! This one has a really great theme and vibe. They did a good job.
That box cover art alone has me sold. So elegant.
If only the game was so good.
Great video Wayne. You convinced me to get this. Looks better implemented than WF Fantasy. I like that this system always gives you options. E g , when that big bad appeared, you could have discarded and drawn cards to try to get some defensive cards. Easy to say in hindsight 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Also, a grenade is listed as a throw weapon not a ranged weapon. This was a great training video. Thank you for doing it.
Appreciate that Tom
On turn nine, you could’ve used to move out to move Elijah into the hostile location. That is not an action because the card says it is not an action so the fast hostile doesn’t activate. He could’ve then flamed him.

War Against the Chtorr is an excellent science fiction novel. It has been in my library for 40+ years.
I really enjoyed them... too bad the author will never finish the series.
I read the first book to prepare for this game. It's alright, definitely a little strange in parts and a little outdated. But worth reading, especially if you're getting the game.

Hi Wayne, in your final thoughts you say this is the best Warfighter game for new players and has the best rulebook …. I own Warfighter WWII and a few expansions, started reading the rulebook and ended up putting it back in the box. Fast forward to now, 2 years later with WWII still sitting on my shelf unplayed, I purchased Warfighter Vietnam (and all 12 of the expansions + campaign - at least I will have more than 3 player soldiers and a good variety of hostiles). I own Compass Games Combat!, L&L’s Point Blank, Fields of Fire, SAS Rogue Regiment and have preordered Purple Haze. I have had the first three quite a while and only ever really dabbled with the rule books so far and are on my list of games I need to make more time for. SAS Rogue Regiment was lightweight but fun, easy to learn (pretty good rules) and quick to play. At the same time I watched some good play throughs of Purple Haze and decided to preorder the base game. These last two games got me thinking about Warfighter again. I pulled it down from the shelf and opened up BGG and before long I was looking at Warfighter Vietnam and decided on a whim that I this was the game to get. It scratched the Vietnam itch (still prefer Eastern Front though), had the level of complexity that in general terms sat between Fields of Fire / Combat! / Point Blank and SAS Rogue Regiment / Purple Haze, and had a rulebook that was meant to be an improvement on the Warfighter Universal Rulebook (WUR)…… meant to be. Having now delved into the rulebook, I would suggest that it is not particularly good, especially for a new player. Some aspects of it are better than the WUR and some are worse: Good points - 1) It focusses just on Vietnam content, rather than cluttering the rulebook with references to things that you are not really sure whether they are relevant or not; Not so good points - 1) No index. This was one of the useful things in WUR. Frustrating and time consuming when you want to find what a word means and you have to resort to downloading a pdf copy and carrying out an electronic search. 2) Lack of coordination between rules drafter and designer maybe? For example, why do the rules refer to “Ammo jam” counters when there aren’t any, despite the rulebook referring to them on pp.10, 36 & 37 3) The rules appear to have been drafted by someone who already knows the game inside out without consideration for a new player to the system despite it being a stand alone game. a) the last paragraph on p.9 of the rules (see below) is not aimed at a new player - someone who has no idea as to the relevance of Body Count or the significance of Eliminate Hostiles text on an Objective card. It would make sense to someone who already knows the rules inside out or probably people who have played other versions of the game “A game of Warfighter plays out very differently with certain combinations of Mission and Objective cards; Run through the Jungle plays relatively quickly when paired with Break on Through thanks to the Eliminate Hostiles Objective and the somewhat low Body Count. On the other hand, War Pigs will be a very long game with the California Dreamin' Objective.” b) The WUR at least makes an effort to describe / breakdown (some of) the constituent parts of the cards - like Objective cards, Hostiles, Player Soldiers, NPS etc, Weapons and Equipment. The Vietnam rulebook only glosses over the detail on the cards, instead giving more of a overview only. This continually leaves the reader inadequately informed when trying to understand the rulebook as he continues to read it. It took be quite a lot of jumping backwards and forwards through the rulebook and other resources before I could work out what H. Reticles were and how they worked. This rulebook gave me the same feeling as the rulebook for Crisis 1914. Learning the rules was one of the worst experiences I have had for what is one of my favourite light wargames. If someone in the whole game development process would spend more time on creating a good rulebook then more people would be attracted to the game or game system. GMT and Compass generally produce consistently good rulebooks. Maybe some other (smaller?) companies don’t want or can’t afford to ensure the quality of the rulebook matches the gameplay. I would be interested in your thoughts on the rulebook compared with other games you have played / reviewed. Thanks for a great video on what I think is a great game system. It is a shame that is spoilt somewhat by a rulebook that is a frustrating read for a new player.
Thanks Wayne - I really appreciate the formats of your videos, they are nicely structured. On a side note I have noticed GMT often have problems with wood colours. The British Way, People Power and Plantagenet all had 'pink' pieces I am pretty sure should have been red. Seems they have gone too far the other way on this one!
I appreciate that Joe!
Thanks for the play through. I just got this and wanted to play gimme shelter. This video really helped.
I'm glad it was helpful 👍
During the hostile reinforcement phase, I believe you only reinforce if there is a soldier present at that location or the location says must reinforce. I understand that all locations get a hostile card after the player's environment phase in a holding action.
Correct
I think at 1:42 the Redeemers would have discarded (if available) to get initiative. Then replace Corp & EG troops in Arabia Terra or Tharsis Montes. Having played games solo I understand the reflex to favor one side.
Sure. A few points: When playing a four-player game solitaire, and playing every side myself, there are going to be "better" decisions that get missed. It's hard to min-max when managing 4 separate factions. I also wasn't playing with best strategy for each Faction in mind, I was playing to show off different Operations and actions that the Factions could take. It's not a strategy video, it's a tutorial video. Keep that in mind when watching.
@@WayneHansen Completely understand. Hate to be the guy in he comments nit picking, but just giving the Redeemers some love. You should come to a meeting.

Thank you. Best play through I've watched on UA-cam. Have the game, been reading rules and watching tutorials but yours gives me some confidence. Although, If I was following correctly there were a few times, if I was playing the Redeemers, I'd have used cards to go first. Mars for Martians!
It's great to hear that the video is helpful for you! And I appreciate the kind words!

Can someone explain this? NOTE: Reclaimers must discard one Asset card for each Faction icon they want to move past, even if that Faction is currently Ineligible. Discarding three Asset cards will always allow Reclaimers to become 1st Eligible, but sometimes fewer discards may be sufficient to become 1st Eligible, depending on which other Factions are currently Eligible
Every time Reclaimers discard an Asset card, they move one space to the left on the Event card order. So, depending on what Factions are Eligible/Ineligible, and where they are on the Event card, the Reclaimer player could have to discard anywhere from 1-3 cards to get ahead of any other, current, eligible Factions. Does that make sense?
so unprotected bases. num numm numm
Hands off!
yes, in the COIN world, unprotected bases are bad. I saw that too.
Unprotected bases are bad everywhere. Just ask New Jersey 😁
Awesome video Wayne, hope we could meet one day
I appreciate that my friend, and absolutely, that would be a lot of fun!
Biggest pair of tweezers e v a h !! Where did you get them? !
Thank you for your work with this video! It will definitely help me to get further into the game 👍
That's awesome, I'm really glad it's helpful. That's always my goal.
Nice detailed playthrough. It seems you overlooked Sharma in the lower right - the control should have swapped to COIN a while back and that helped you miss some opportunities to hit the RD. A lot to remember in this game - especially solo and filming.
Yep, good catch!
Thanks for tackling a teach and playthrough of this. 25:49 Corp performed logistics on Earth, Transit and Hellas Chaos, but shouldn't they only been able to do this in only one of these as it was a Lim Op?
If it was a Limited Op, then yes, every Faction (other than Reclaimers) can only conduct their Operation in a single space. Reclaimers can target multiple spaces during a Limited Op, but can only use one Asset card to pay for it.
Oh thank God.... someone is tackling a playthrough video. Appreciate it.
It's a tough job, but someone has to do it 💪😁
Looking forward to going through this video. Hey, I like those grabbers. Do you have a link for where you got them?
Hey everyone! I hope you liked the video. If you did, I'd love to think I earned your subscription. It really helps me to get more of these great games to show off! I have some Christmas bucks. This one is on the list, or one of the Warfighter games. Thanks for the review.
I need to do some more videos on this one.
Thanks Wayne - your review has just saved me money!
Glad I could be of help! Use your money on a well developed game.
Excellent tutorial Wayne, I was not going to purchase this game, I have too many WW2 games, but this one seems very interesting, so I will be purchasing this version. The fact that it is a solitaire game is also a big selling point, since that's how I play a lot of my games anyway. Thank you Wayne for another clear and interesting tutorial.
Apologies for costing you so much money lately 😁
