Verdict! Corvette Command | World War 2 | Solitaire | Review
The verdict is in! This is an overview and review of the solo, narrative-driven wargame Corvette Command: The Battle of the Atlantic 1941-43. Designed by Alan Eagle and published by War Diary Publications. This is the 2nd Edition of the Print and Play game originally released in 2021.
Corvette Command is a strategic level solo narrative generating game giving you the chance to experience the worst that the Atlantic can throw at you while taking on the German U-boats. Your crew starts out raw and with basic skills which they get the opportunity to improve over the course of the campaign. Your mission is to protect the convoy from attack and success is measured by the scale of the losses incurred rather than by how many U-boats are sunk. If vital supplies are lost then this can impact on how quickly new technology becomes available to you such as radar and HF/DF detection.
It is May 1941 and the Battle of the Atlantic is reaching a critical point. The Royal Canadian Navy has extended its convoy cover eastwards and the Royal Navy has pushed their cover west so that convoys are now escorted the whole way across the Atlantic. For the purposes of game play only these two forces have been combined and you command a single Flower Class Corvette all the way across the Atlantic. Although the “Escort Gap” has been closed the “Air Gap” remains. The escorts are still waiting for the arrival of ship borne radar and spotting surfaced U-Boats and keeping station on convoys in the dark and poor visibility is still reliant on the lookouts. Ship to ship communications is also via signal lamps and flags and occasionally by loud hailer. The game ends on 31st May 1943.
There are optional advanced rules that enable you to play a quick set up one-off game or a two player game and introduce greater level of detail. If you enjoyed Nicholas Monsarrat’s book or film “The Cruel Sea” then don your sea going gear and head out into the Atlantic.

Reassuring to hear an honest review. Thank you
I appreciate that!
Well done Wayne, a thoughtful, detailed review from someone who has actually played the game and gives information and opinions backed up by examples. This game came from a PnP, which I have, so lets hope that the designer takes your comments constructively and improves the design. Sometimes, sending a game to the printers cements the design when it was evolving happily as a free PnP. I agree, independent designers who can pull apart a game with a detached and constructive approach are invaluable.
I really appreciate the kind words. Corvette Command feels like a missed opportunity, unfortunately.
"I wanted to like Corvette Command" my thoughts exactly. Components are nice, it has a small footprint, plays quickly, but the rulebook is a weapons-grade disaster and as you say there is one and only one player decision, everything else is just a rote process. It's interesting in a way for examining the convoy war since there are so few games on that topic, but this is not a game per se, it's just a process of rolling dice and looking at charts.
I love the theme/topic, you just don't see a lot of games on it. Looking forward to more.
Excellent. I'm using your comments in perfecting my own game. Many thanks.
If my review helps you at all, I am glad.
I bought this game on a flyer because I thought it sounded interesting. Unfortunately I agree with your points about the rules and player agency. And there’s no way I could see spending the time to play a full campaign. I provided my feedback directly to the folks at War Diary magazine and I will say they were very gracious about it and I do think their magazine is good. I have already traded away my copy of Corvette Command.
I really like the crew over at War Diary. They have a passion for the hobby. I do hope they keep putting out games, perhaps with more time in development.
No question your assessment was fair, your assessment of its shortcomings all factual, so your criticisms were valid. That said Wayne, I still loved playing this game. It IS a game that looks good. Took me three games to understand the rules correctly, but once I did, I enjoyed playing it. Helped that I kept a detailed log as it brought the game to life. Value for money? It proved to be for me.
Thank you for sharing. And I mean this truly, if you enjoy it, that's all that matters for you. I know this game has an audience of people that have or will enjoy the game. However, I do believe the game could be enjoyed by many more people if some more time had been spent on the rules, player aids, and some gameplay tweaks. Anyway, I appreciate you sharing your perspective.
Wayne, let me be clear; your review was very fair. All the problems as well as the shortcomings that you identified, they exist. So kudos to you for a fair review. For me, however, after I worked out the rules, I just enjoyed playing the game, is all. No need for this to be a further back and forth; I'm following your website, you come across as fair and balanced, so keep up the good work mate.
Thanks! I watch your reviews because of their honesty. Good or bad, I've found I can rely on your reviews for an honest opinion based on game play.
That means a lot. I don't need everyone to agree with me, in fact I wouldn't like that. But what I always try to do is give my honest opinion, based on the game and experience I've gone through. I don't just tell you what I like and don't like, I attempt to explain why I have those particular opinions. I'd like to think I'm usually successful. Thanks again for the comment.
At last, a reviewer willing to call it as it is. The give away for me was the amount of wasted space on the map, always a red flag, it usually means a game trying too hard to be bigger than its actual design. I would say around fifty percent of games I buy are a major disappointment, with very little player input usually being the biggest flaw. Thanks for the honest review Wayne.
Absolutely!
Thank you for the honest review, too many reviewers are mealy mouthed trying not to offend. This kind of review helps me.
You're welcome, I always try to be honest about my thoughts on games. I want people to be as informed as possible, then they can make their own choices about a game.
There is a good game in there, somewhere. I actually re-wrote the rules and sent them to Alan but wasn't taken up although I saw some aspects of it. A shame overall.
It is a shame. If the game rules were well written, and the player aids both helpful, accurate, and well designed, it would go a long way. I would still like to see more player agency in the game design itself.
Thanks for the review. When I started watching I was going to buy, but your review saved me from a purchase that would sit on my shelf.
I'm glad it was helpful! Always my goal, whether a person buys a game or doesn't, I just want people to be informed.
I got totally caught up in Compass Games' "Zeppelin Raiders" lately - so much so, I just snagged a used copy of their "Beneath the Med", so this game seems like my kind of fun. Looks like a whole different kind of critter though! (I sure hope Corvettes aren't as fragile as Zeppelin!) It looks unlikely to turn into a slog in a long campaign game, and that's a big selling point. I like all the variables. But yeah, it seems like Compass Games could coach them quite a bit on their rulebook & player cards. (Not saying Compass is perfect - thanks the gods for BGG, where rules clarification happens) I guess the choice will depend on the price... Thanks for a great review, as always, sir!
Appreciate seeing you swing by Joey, as always!
Good honest review Wayne. It’s too bad the rules weren’t gone over in more detail before the game was released. Just like the dvg games and Warfighter. Terrible rules, will not play, it feels like work!
I just want to be able to read the rules, setup the game, and then play. Is that too much to ask?
Where is your garbage can, Wayne? 😁
Haha Dennis. I may have had to retire the garbage can from my videos, but it's there in spirit sometimes.

Excellent thanks Wayne.
Hope it was helpful!
Nice video as always. However, I did feel your frustration with the rule book and inconsistent terminology. e.g. Close Range/Short range. I personally don't like the muiltitude of different dice and the active/passive table. I've only used a fraction of it to be honest. Not sure how you get up to 20! I would prefer a table for each process and calculated accordingly as a % with DRM as applicable. . The rule book is hard to follow espcially as the flow chart is also wrong. I must have liked it as I had the pnp version and now purchased the full box version. Not sure why now. It was rather expensive for the contents, especially a paper map and mis-aligned counters. There's a good game in there somewhere I think..
I have many of the same criticisms, Russ. I talk about them more in my review that just went up.
merci beaucoup pour cette vidéo, je viens de commander ce jeu et son extension Pipe Creek, je m'abonne a votre chaine merci
I'm glad you enjoyed it and found it useful!
One more comment. You made the same mistake I did when I first played the game. Your HMS Teacup shouldn’t have been sunk, at least on that turn. After every u boat attack ( torpedo launch) the u boat attempts to disengage to outside long range to reload, and if successful, then returns to its attack range for a second or third attack, disengaging after each separate attack. All the while you are attempting to detect it. The 1 you rolled should have given you a detection as the u boat attempted to disengage, not a torpedo launch. There was a pretty good discussion about this on Board Game Geek.
Another example of the poor rulebook in action. But thanks.
Thanks for this play through. I personally really enjoy this game. I agree that the player doesn’t get to make many decisions but I equate this to watching a movie. I enjoy seeing what’s going to happen to my corvette and convoy as the game takes me through the Atlantic crossing. I know it’s not for everyone but I enjoy this game.
Thanks for sharing! If you enjoy it, then that's all that matters.
Have the game, was disappointed in what i feel was a lack of agency as the player. Very limited decisions to make as player. Would say it is okay if you want a quick dice chucked.

You butchered my name but no worries :) If I see your collection behind you I'm honored, the game will be in good company. Much materials on the BGG and dedicated facebookgroup are available for print. Looking forward to the review
Unfortunately, yours isn't the first person's name I've butchered, and it won't be the last. But I apologize! I do try to recognize artists along with game designers. Just a heads up on my review, it is a more critical review than you may be expecting. Although I do recognize the art direction as a huge positive. Regardless, if you'd like to see what my final thoughts are on the game, the review will be published next Monday.
Cannot wait for the playthrough videos.
Playthrough going up tomorrow, and it features my usual "luck".
Hope you’ll be doing a playthrough and review. Very interested in your opinion on this one.

It's an attractive game for sure. As for rules and gameplay? Well, stay tuned for my review coming next week.
Hi Wayne, still playing Stalingrad Volga didn’t like the factory scenario have to win and then put away, nice gideo
I got my Kickstarter copy recently, I need to make time to get it to the table.
STILL one of my favorite 3-player, historical games. Works so, so well 3 player.
Epic tweezer! Where’d you get it?
lol I asked the same question in another one of his videos. He needs to give us the link to buy them!!
Where do you get the pinchers you are using? Do you have a link for the exact ones?
Might get this someday, not like losing all the time on Stalingrad advance to the Volga, all about die rolls
Excellent playthrough Wayne. Looking forward to your review. Looks like a game I should get to the table and try out.

Nice video! Great overview of all aspects of the game, which is fun and challenging. Short rule book but lot of strategic thinking required by both sides to play the game well. The relatively simple game system has plenty of depth and captures key elements of the actual battle (terrain, supply, importance of roads for reaching objectives, etc). And the components are great - box, mounted board, counters, etc. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Been waiting on Part 2! Going to watch this and then get the game on the table and go.
Thanks Wayne, I think I'll like this game. My knowledge of the Korean War is very limited, although there was a battalion from my country that fought there.
My review will be going up on Monday. Spoiler: The game has it's flaws, but I'm a big fan regardless.
Thanks for this, I was on the fence whether to pick up or not.
I hope these two videos give you a good taste of the gameplay.

I just found out about WDG from a facebook post. These games look great. I love history and gaming and their games seem a perfect blend of both. Thanks for the unboxing. It confirms my opinion of how good these games look. You have a new subscriber.
WDG publishes many wonderful historical games, they deserve more attention from people.
Just got this in the mail. These videos are super helpful, nice job!!!
I really appreciate that!
don't you keep the result from the first combat for the second combat like you do in the last stand game
you plat the final assault cards straight away from the Texas deck
Made it to 11.00min only. Why? It looks like 2 errors in a row. Girardy shoots at 55IL. Hex 2408 blocks LOS I would say. Then it retreats 1 hex north and the west. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Looks like that Rebel artillery is even less effective in this battle than I realized!
@@WayneHansen This map it is extreme hard to find spots with a los for the artillery. This due to all the forest. It help that the LOS rules have changed.

Looks like a very interesting game. I’ll look forward to seeing your playthrough of the next few turns. Hopefully no sudden death victory for the communists!
We'll see about that 😵💫😁
Just got my copy, great to watch it working in action.
I think you'll enjoy it. It's not a perfect game, but it surprised me how addictive it was. I wasn't sure what to expect going in
I would like to know approximately how long it takes to finish a game, thank you.
Several hours for the full game. Maybe 3 hours if experienced, 6 hours for your first game. Shorter if the communists achieve a sudden death victory, of course. But it is not a short game in general. You play out the full 12 turns and each turn has many segments and steps.
@@WayneHansen I don't have much time to play games usually, so the information you provided is very useful.
@@WayneHansenlonger than I assumed when I bought the game but that’s ok. I look forward to digging into the rules and then getting this game in the table. Thx!!
