Heating can be controlled from steering wheel and annoying beeps and loud indicator sound can be fixed in settings. Props to my local dealer - he’d watched all the UA-cam reviews and it was the first thing he told me when I took a test drive. It’s excellent and I want one!
@@Hashbrowniepie there are 2 “joysticks” (up-down- left-right) on the steering wheel and a star button next to each which toggle their functions (so 4 sets of controls) so you can assign the aircon to one and turn temp up and down (up down) and fan speed (left right) all on the one stick. Personally I wish all cars had this, just like controlling the music volume, safer with your hands on the wheel, I’ve always had a tendency to drift a bit while reaching to the dash to fiddle with the heating.
I know you love your exotics Rory but your reviews of lesser cars are outstanding - your understanding of what real people want is something most testers miss.👍
Nice video! But there were some errors and missing information, I just got a MG4 Trophy so I can confirm you first hand the following: 1) AirCon: you use that button under the screen to turn it on/off, you pressed it twice because it was already on. You can access to that aircon screen touching the upper part of the screen, where temperature and fan speed are always shown, or from the climate button on the right side of the screen in the home menu. Using one of those two ways the screen will stay on climate setting, so you'll have all the time you want. Also the right star button on the steering wheel allows you to control temp and fan from there. Buttons are easier to operate but it's not that bad 2) 17" alloys 3) drowsiness alert is the one beeping, is a known problem and MG is releasing soon an OTA soon, that's what my dealer told me when I collected the car few days ago. You can turn it off and it will stay off when you restart the car, same for lane keeping assist and preference on star button. Although regen and driving mode will reset to 3 (max) and Normal and the restart, that's annoying and I hope they will fix it as well 4) Regen has also the "auto" setting, changing the regen intensity according to speed 5) I didn't try to get 0-60 mph as fast as I could but it should be less than 8 seconds (you said 7 in the video). Anyway is pretty quick and the rear wheel drive gives it a really sporty feeling 6) on the Trophy there are sensors at the back for sure, if you put it in reverse it will show you them in addition to the camera views. Not completely sure on the front, but you have a good idea where the front of the car is, so doesn't bother too much. Anyway, I think it's a really good car, great experience for me so far, go and have a test drive by yourself, it's worth it.
yeah, it was comical when he was switching the aircon on & off & then b!tching about it. A little thought into what he was doing & maybe, just maybe, taking the time to look at the screen properly as you can clearly see the options you mentioned, or even, god forbid, do research or read the manual 🤣

@@Sto79Be yeah 100% sure, I turned off the LAME keeping assist in the moment I entered the car the first time and never came back. However, if you select the traffic jam assist instead of "just" cruise adaptive control, it will be on to keep you in lane as it is part of the TJA. But when you switch to ACC, it goes off again. The drowsiness alert should work the same way but the dealer already turned it off and I didn't try to turn it on. PS: loved the lame keeping assist hahaha

Press the top of the screen (where the temp is shown) or swipe down and you'll get a set of controls that don't disappear (or use the button on the steering wheel). All models have parking sensors at the rear (not at the front though).
A few tips for you, you can set the car to enable the heating controls from the steering wheel. You can turn the beeps OFF for the driver awareness system and they don't turn back on after restart. The wheels are 17" not 18". Otherwise, I agree with everything he said, it's a great car to drive at exceptional value.

You are tapping the AC button twice. That just turns the system off and back on. It shows briefly to confirm on, then closes the display. To adjust, you simply drag down from the mini-AC info at the top of the screen and you then have the full AC control screen, OR you can allocate AC to the right star button on the steering wheel. This will bring up the full display on the screen, but will also give you shortcut to temp via the toggle switch up/down and fan-speed left/right.
@@AutoTraderTV as he said you can assign it to the right star button on the steering wheel and make that a permanent AC button. nowhere near as good as physical buttons, but still better than most of it's rivals when you know how to use the shortcut buttons.

A generally good review but quite a few wrong facts... Rory says they start at at £24999...actually it's £25995 for the SE..he says the Trophy is "just over £30,000" ...it's actually £31,495 for the blue or white and increasing extras for the other colours up to £35190 for the orange as tested....a bit more than "just over £30000"....still excellent value though Instead of pressing the button at the bottom to bring up the HVAC screen and it disappearing after 2 seconds...just press the very top of the screen where it shows AC and the temp display and you will find the screen stays on all the time. It does have rear sensors...on my Trophy, as well as the rear cam view being displayed, it also beeps with increasing urgency the nearer you get to an obstacle ...just like normal rear sensors. Had mine 3 weeks and loving it so far. :)
nice one Rory. Pity here in South Africa so far the cheapest EV is the Mini and Haval (introduced about 2 months ago) the rest are still out of reach for average consumer (Porsche, BMW, Merc, Audi and Volvo). Will eventually get there
@@FrozenDung i see many brand new Haval cars in road of Bangladesh. Usually here people import second hand cars from abroad because the price of brand new car plus tax by government is just too much.
WARNING: I work in the port of Zeebrugge where many new cars arrive and are moved between docks all day. I’ve never seen so many cars break down as the MG’s. Often seen multiple per day on the side of the road with a technician with it. So there is clearly a reliability issue somewhere…
You can scroll down from the top of the screen to use AC controlls, it won't disappear in 2 seconds and you can also set shortcuts on the steering wheel to control it. So unfortunately you're wrong when you complained about that.
Wrong! He's absolutely right to complain about an unusable function. Good news that there's an alternative, but that doesn't justify what Rory demonstrated.
@Mark Iliff but him double tapping it meant he switches it on... then off... that's why it went off. Its the same if you did it on most electrical devices. Its obvious its the wrong thing to do. You scroll down from the top of the screen and it shows you the full window and stays. Or you use the shortcut on the steering wheel, IT COUlDNT BE ANY EASIER!!!
Rejected mine due to the oil leak and warped under tray plus all the other issues like over sensitive ‘safety’ features. The storage bits in the rear of the front seats are only in the Trophy model. Car drove really well and rapid charging speeds were faster than claimed, saw 143kW charging! Not very efficient, 3.8mi/kWh where my Ioniq 38 was getting 5.4mi/kWh driven over the same route at the same time.
I bought a Kia Proceed in 2008 before they became properly mainstream in the UK. The plus side was the car held it’s value and after 5 years ownership I never lost a penny. Buying a MG now is a very good proposition in comparison to the extreme depreciation of the used ICE car market.
These are the only clever purchases I’ve ever made … coming from a petrol head who’s owned most hot hatches and a few 3.0 thoroughbreds. Sick of £400+ road tax and 20mpg.
Test drove your equivalent Trophy Long Range. It's a brilliant car to drive yet comfortable. Our cheapest model still have rear independent suspension compared with a cheapest BYD Dolphin. I should be ok with some sacrifices otherwise I will need to save more for a better model.
If the heating is already on (on an undesirable setting) a single tap turns it off completely. You need a second tap to turn it back on. Hence the double tap.
@@AutoTraderTV but as explained in other replies you don't use that button to access the heating, instead press on the screen area that displays temp and AC at the top of the screen. That button seems to just toggle on/off only.
I love your videos! Once again very informative! I'm still looking at a company EV, my renting limit is low and I first decided "no Asian car". Of course all Western EV are way out of my limit (Citroën eC4 could be an option after I watched your video but the range is too small). Then I said "ok, Asian, but no Chinese car". And today I might say "ok, Chinese car"...
I renting to own one but I’m very disappointed with user interface: 1- Head light can’t go off while the car is on. To turn all lights off you must to turn the car off. 2- car windows don’t raise up when you lock the car (MG said car don’t have this functionality 😕) 3- if the head lights is on and you lock the car the lights will still on. ( I believe we figured it out back on 90’s but this smart car don’t know) 4- The system doesn’t save. To drive using one pedal mode and eco. I do need this every time. (4 slow steps to get there) 5- Car Play keeps disconnecting even with genuine cable 6- If the car is charging and I lock it when I do unlocked makes a loud beep and wake up everyone around. 7- Inside light led turn on when you turn the head light on very annoying drive at night with that you your face.
Oh, dear. Legacy marques could really be in the crap now. An affordable electric car that's not only adequate for most people, but actively desirable in many ways.
1:10 for no reason other than to make it look interesting... 😂.. totally agree with you. It took me almost one year to made a decision to get this car, #1 is the look #2 is the feature #3 value for money. #4 the british DNA 😊 The cons : simple design interior -- justified...

The boot is not bigger than the boot of an ID3. And not sure about the 0-60 time you mention. Other reviewers say the seats are too soft and not supporting. I hate the rear design, but this car could definitely become a game changer. Great value for money.
Forget the 0-60 time in this model. The triple motor variant is out in a few months. If you want a fast car, that's the one you will go for. I seem to recall Matt at carwow saw about 7s. Quicker than 95% of ICE cars on the road, would certainly eat my MG6 Turbo for breakfast in a straight line upto about 80mph!
Cheap is relative, you need a supplier/dealer network that will support and resolve issues throughout the vehicle's lifespan, China MG havent exactly inspired confidence so far. My son's, purchased from new, MGZX was scrap after only 4 years, as MG couldnt get the engine through UK emissions tests, but also, wouldnt replace it.
This is exactly the same I feel for it, the car is damn good. But the interface and assist system is really bad, but they will be updated I'm sure of that. If they do it could easily be my choice then i retired my Mini Cooper, nice review 👍
Fantastic, cheap car, only £30K! Real bargain...? Rory, why only ever top-spec cars? Come on, get a pleb mobile and test that. I think the beeps are good for driving using one's phone though, you can keep in lane using them whilst watching the footie. I like the Austin Allegro steering wheel, it was defo before its time at the time. Looking forward to using those controls in an 8-year-old car, bet they will all work, with no dead spots/cracks in the screen and no failed online updates. We are looking at built-in obsolescence big time, it will make rusting BLMC cars seem like they would last forever....
Looks great. Love the concept and it's a step in the right direction. But, we need to see something reasonably priced with 300 miles range on a cold wet motorway drive 👍 I'm sure with the Chinese arrival in force it'll happen.
Highly unlikely but also not necessary. With 100kw charging you can go from 20% to 80% in 20 minutes. If you’re driving 300 miles you will stop at some point anyway. Pointless carrying around 90kw of battery all the time for those rare super long journeys.
@@Sarngated yes... totally agree with you on that one. At least here in the UK, the last recorded 'average journey speed' (in 2016) was a mere 59mph...! So, 3 hours' driving is only about 180-190 miles, by which time you, or your little darlings in the rear seats, are gonna need a 'loo-break'. And, as you also point out, 20-25 minutes rapid charge gets you back on you way with another 180-190 miles of range before you've had chance to drink your Starbucks...! 😉
@@Sarngated MG can do about 170-180 motorway miles during winter.100kw public charging will cost you 80p per kWh making it more expensive than a diesel to drive after initial home charge depleted. With 300 miles of winter driving, you can get to French alps with 2 charging stops vs 4 with current range. And for those with no home charging, 300 miles of range is a must in my opinion so that you do one charging stop weekly to cover your daily chores.
@@yuriy81uk What percentage of people do you think take their cars overseas never mind drive to the Alps ? 😂 The second best selling car in the UK last year was the Vauxhall Corsa. I somehow doubt people are taking those on a skiing trip.
Here's a question about 'one-pedal-driving' in general but not about the MG on test. If I use full regenerative braking and the car slows to a stop, do the brake lights come on as the car does so?
The computer system still needs work, I’d be annoyed between the beeping and the climate control display. Once is reconfigured, you might have more buyers.
Looks like an Urus if you blink a lot, surround it with thick fog and you have a chronic eye condition. For the price point, fine way to get on EV scene for cheap and avoid the taxi man prius
Excellent review, always enjoyed Rory on what I reckon was the dream team on Top Gear with him, Chris and Matt. The infotainment seems a bit shonky, but I’m sure it’s fixable with an update. You can’t touch the value though, and also worth noting you could actually buy one of these today if you wanted, not an option for the majority of cars, particularly EVs.
Having tried this car I agree it's pretty good for the money, but it's not helpful to potential buyers to get some of the facts wrong, ie the price, the wheel size and boot comparison size with other makes. Just correct it in the edit as others do.
This video made me realize that you guys don't get the Chevy Bolt, something that is very similar in class that we have in the U.S. On the other hand we don't get those MGs which is a bit of a shame
Raining and no rear wash wipe. See the irony? The lack of this useful safety related feature fitted for YEARS gives a peak into the odd minds of the decision makers inside MG Fashion won over practicality and common sense. Unforgivable. And Rory why didn't you call them out on this? And that beeping, heating controls etc..designed to distract the driver. Good grief A fine design ruined by stupidity.
I'll stick to my proper MG ZT 2004 It doesn't compute to me to go from my current 48 mpg to 70mpg at the cost of £30k I'll never get that back, plus my ZT is only going up in value 😎
The ora will be comparatively more expensive, sorry. Both lovely cars. I'd grab the MG4 as GWM are not established in the UK. I was one of the silly sods that bought an MG6 Turbo in the early days of MG. Brilliant car but for the first 3 years, pretty much till the MG3 was released and started selling, it was a bit squeeky bum time as I wasn't sure they'd survive. It was a leap of faith because the MG6 was an awesome drivers car and I wanted an upto date ZT effectively. MG are booming now, one of the biggest manufacturers in the UK with a strong and established dealer network. It took them 10 years to get into a good position. They lost hundreds of millions of pounds during that time. GWM may or may not have the backing to allow for sustained losses for the first 3-7 years or Ora. If they don't, you're in no man's land.
We are lucky enough to have a third family car for Town use and dogs etc...currently a 3008 hybrid due to replacement in July...this all electric is excellent value and will be on list
Great review by Rory, I very much like how he reported the usability limitations with the infotainment system. Balanced. Things like that would drive me crackers I think, but that aside what a statement of intent by Chinese automakers!

Rory says they start at at £24999...actually it's £25995 for the SE..he says the Trophy is "just over £30,000" ...it's actually £31,495 for the blue or white and increasing extras for the other colours up to £35190 for the orange as tested....a bit more than "just over £30000"....still excellent value though
Instead of pressing the button at the bottom to bring up the HVAC screen and it disappearing after 2 seconds...just press the very top of the screen where it shows AC and the temp display and you will find the screen stays on all the time.
It does have rear sensors...on my Trophy, as well as the rear cam view being displayed, it also beeps with increasing urgency the nearer you get to an obstacle ...just like normal rear sensors.
Had mine 3 weeks and loving it so far. :)
What’s your range like?
nice one Rory. Pity here in South Africa so far the cheapest EV is the Mini and Haval (introduced about 2 months ago) the rest are still out of reach for average consumer (Porsche, BMW, Merc, Audi and Volvo). Will eventually get there
Never seen a Haval until I came to New Zealand, they look pretty good and seem quite popular here
@@FrozenDung they sell like McDonald's this side. Very affordable and come fully specced. Still need to work on their drivetrain, not that refined
@@FrozenDung Super popular in South Africa and only heard good things about them
@@FrozenDung Built by Great Wall motors. The same company behind the to-be-launched Ora Cat
Are you talking about the EVs or the ICE's?

It's really a beautiful car..! 🔥❤️

Rory; you are a gem. Don't stop. I just wish a certain AutoExpress reviewer could watch and learn how to mix humour with proper information.
Just a shame the review has incorrect information as many have pointed out! Hardly a cause for praise in this instance.
Test drove your equivalent Trophy Long Range. It's a brilliant car to drive yet comfortable. Our cheapest model still have rear independent suspension compared with a cheapest BYD Dolphin. I should be ok with some sacrifices otherwise I will need to save more for a better model.
Really good presentation Rory! Especially with the plastic cover and all the good and bad things!
Single tap for the heating, the second 'double tap' is a lagged response which removed the screen
I renting to own one but I’m very disappointed with user interface:
1- Head light can’t go off while the car is on. To turn all lights off you must to turn the car off.
2- car windows don’t raise up when you lock the car (MG said car don’t have this functionality 😕)
3- if the head lights is on and you lock the car the lights will still on. ( I believe we figured it out back on 90’s but this smart car don’t know)
4- The system doesn’t save. To drive using one pedal mode and eco. I do need this every time. (4 slow steps to get there)
5- Car Play keeps disconnecting even with genuine cable
6- If the car is charging and I lock it when I do unlocked makes a loud beep and wake up everyone around.
7- Inside light led turn on when you turn the head light on very annoying drive at night with that you your face.
My Fiat 500e also used to regularly provide similar over-cautious warning messages they have diminished with time.
#4 the british DNA 😊
The cons : simple design interior -- justified...
1:23: position of the indicator is a triumph of form over function. put the sodding indicator where they can be best seen. that's what they are there for - to be seen. sakes
My Model 3 has active shutters in the front. They not used to cool the battery? Can't imagine they are used for anything else.
The MG4 as well, they are used for that.
@@j_laskada Right, but Rory is acting like Tesla's don't? I don't understand. Maybe they are hidden so well he literally never noticed. I mean a huge gap in the front bottom on the hood might be something to look at...you know considering he did in this video. And he's done a few Tesla Model 3 videos. Just confusing.
@@OverlordActual It is... and it's weird yeah.
Another great review Rory, good balanced test.
The boot is not bigger than the boot of an ID3. And not sure about the 0-60 time you mention. Other reviewers say the seats are too soft and not supporting. I hate the rear design, but this car could definitely become a game changer. Great value for money.
Boot size cannot be argued but seat firmess is subjective
Forget the 0-60 time in this model. The triple motor variant is out in a few months. If you want a fast car, that's the one you will go for. I seem to recall Matt at carwow saw about 7s. Quicker than 95% of ICE cars on the road, would certainly eat my MG6 Turbo for breakfast in a straight line upto about 80mph!
I want one in North America 😭 man EVs are so expensive here. Something like these would be great.
The Chinese are coming, the Chinese have arrived!
Isn't MG a British brand?
Chinese in the British clothes
@@kittyflier8338 British born but raised in China
@@seanlee3863 Like Mini, which is British born but raised in German?
MG have been Chinese for a very long time now. MG6 saloon was back in 2010 in the UK. Over a decade. So nothing new
I think we should set up a crowd funding page to buy Rory some new trousers.

It's cheaper than an entry level petrol Golf. £30k IS pleb level for new cars now if you have a family.
Looks great. Love the concept and it's a step in the right direction. But, we need to see something reasonably priced with 300 miles range on a cold wet motorway drive 👍
I'm sure with the Chinese arrival in force it'll happen.
Think the mg4 starts at £25995 and also all mg4 have 17inch alloys not 18 inch.also 0-62 is 7.9
Here's a question about 'one-pedal-driving' in general but not about the MG on test.
If I use full regenerative braking and the car slows to a stop, do the brake lights come on as the car does so?
I think the brake lights come on if you use the strong regen setting.
@@CastleKnight7 Thanks!

I've been waiting for you to do this one Rory, an I've heard a lot of good talks about it.
Of course it isn't available in my country. It's not sold in the US. :(
Love this guy's reviews.
You have a joyful conversation (with yourself). 😎
The only Company who can rival and out perform MG in terms of good value for money product is BYD.
The computer system still needs work, I’d be annoyed between the beeping and the climate control display. Once is reconfigured, you might have more buyers.
U caught me with the intro, plus awesome video as usal, keep up the great work.
Looks like an Urus if you blink a lot, surround it with thick fog and you have a chronic eye condition. For the price point, fine way to get on EV scene for cheap and avoid the taxi man prius
Looks more like a Cupra Bore, but without the juvenile bling. ✔✔

Open the sunrooof. LOLLLL i was howling.
Nah I'm not having that Richard James and jezza are the best
diss agree with the legroom its just cramped at the back
The front end is clearly inspired by the C8 Corvette and… it’s not actually that bad
Looks like it does need a bigger heater and heating in back the moisture on the windows said it all..
Don't you just love the quote That £24,000 to £30,000 is CHEAP !😂😂😂🤣
*when compared to other EVs, like the ridiculously overpriced ID.3
I hear people say they don't like the design but in person they're a real head turner at the moment. I imagine that will fade with its success.
Design is subjective, i used to hate MY until i got one!
Ah. I'd miss the single pedal driving. For me, it's one must have feature in an EV. I drive a Fiat 500e.
Raining and no rear wash wipe.
See the irony?
The lack of this useful safety related feature fitted for YEARS gives a peak into the odd minds of the decision makers inside MG
Fashion won over practicality and common sense.
Unforgivable.
And Rory why didn't you call them out on this?
And that beeping, heating controls etc..designed to distract the driver.
Good grief
A fine design ruined by stupidity.
MY does not have rear wipers and thr car cost 60k
I've heard there will be a hot hatch version 0-60 under 4 secs coming soon.
Fantastic Review - thanks Rory.
I'll stick to my proper MG ZT 2004
It doesn't compute to me to go from my current 48 mpg to 70mpg at the cost of £30k
I'll never get that back, plus my ZT is only going up in value 😎
Where can I buy one in the USA? I used to have a 1968 MGB and I loved it!
the good thing is the new one will probably be as equally unreliable as your 68 lol
What a great thorough enjoyable review 👏👏👏
Thanks for the thorough review!

Love the design. Front bonnet could be better, reminds me of nissan leaf of sorts. That's just me.
Looks interesting but my favourite has to be Polestar
The one thing that bugs me about " MG "
Is why was the MG6 dropped.
Total crap maybe?
The ID3 actually has a bigger boot not smaller
This one vs. the Ora Funky Cat - which one do you prefer?
They would seem to be quite different cars aimed at different markets. Both seem really good.
Hopefully MG can update them for the weird beeps and software issues like the climate
Interesting EV! Also noticed a new Roly on your wrist!!! New edition? Or did you trade in your two-tone Rolex??
We are lucky enough to have a third family car for Town use and dogs etc...currently a 3008 hybrid due to replacement in July...this all electric is excellent value and will be on list

Great review by Rory, I very much like how he reported the usability limitations with the infotainment system. Balanced.
Things like that would drive me crackers I think, but that aside what a statement of intent by Chinese automakers!
