Interesting how ever since it’s inception in Gen 4. Gamefreak has been slowly introducing new ways to nerf Stealth Rocks in order to mend their mistake. Gen 5: Magic Bounce Gen 6: Defog Gen 7: Even more Defog Gen 8: An item that ignores Stealth Rocks all together
They deleted a bunch of moves from Gen 8 (including Hidden Power, a very popular competitive move) so I'm kind of surprised they didn't just axe stealth rock entirely
Who would win? Grand flying beasts and terrifying bug creatures that are capable of breathing fire, freezing other strong creatures on site and poisoning them with deathly attacks. or Some minerals.
I always thought Stealth Vines for grass would be a lot of fun. Since grass is typically such a poor attacking type it would be a lot less immediately suffocating than rocks but would also provide a different flavour since Grass and Rock share no strenghts
A little detail about gen 8 Charizard: He is literally the face of RU. Heavy duty boots makes him a good offensive defogger and due to scorching hands now has the tools to not being countered by common rock users; an RU team who cannot deal with Zard is a bad team period and again, the rock types in RU are just checks not counters. Funnily enough Fire/Flying was always a good defensive typing but overlooked due to rocks (aside of 3° gen Moltres).
@@beta511ee4 Multiple reasons, all of them explaining some of the reaons why Moltres was the best fire type in Advance OU. First EVs made your typing and resistances more important when considering your bulk. Second, Moltres got Will-O-Wisp due to XD, improving his physical bulk a lot in practice. Third, there was no stealth rocks but up to three layer of spikes, so mons with levitate or flying types had more longevity. Fourth: While Charizard was good in Gen 2 OU, his set was a mix one with belly drum who cuts your bulk in half. Meanwhile Moltres has the same bulk as Zapdos. Don't get me wrong, that bird was mainly used as a special wallbreaker to defeat spike users and most steel types teams tend to have in mass because it had the strongest fire blast in the game, but that defensive utility product of his typing and movepool, alongside that wallbreaking potential, gives it a niche in gen 3.
The impact of stealth rock was immense I honestly don't understand how moves like baton pass were banned while stealth rock who's completely dominant competitively stands strong The viability of some mons js completely dependent on stealth rock They had to buff defog and basically give it to everything just so people had a chance of countering it There are whole strategies around punishing/preventing your opponent from removing rocks I wait for the day where this completely broken move is finally put to rest Permanently It would make for a much healthier competitive environment
Bias and spite is why baton pass is banned in smogon and stealth rocks is permitted and because baton pass was pretty much the only viable way to completely stuff any stealth rocks attempts. How? simple ask yourself this: would you really want to risk putting up stealth rocks when you know that just one successful baton pass boost could potentially end your whole team because of wasting a turn to put up stealth rocks which gave your opponent enough time to get off a successful a boosted baton pass? You see smogon rules works only when smogon is not bias, spiteful, or hypocritical and abuse their power to ban certain strategies. it's not the first time their rulings on certain things was complete crap. like banning garchomp why because when they banned garchomp they allowed moxie mance to dominate ou because they disturbed the balance of ou by banning the only surefire counter to moxie mance which was garchomp.🤨🤔🧐
That's why when players say smogon standards? I say yes except only one baton passer no baton pass smeargle and cannot baton pass to smeargle nor any baton pass recipients on this list: tapu bulu, celesteela, megearna, necrozma, heracross, mega heracross, chespin line, mawile, mega mawile, espeon, manaphy, nor heatran. 🤨🤔🧐
I would love a "History of Megas" about the impacts they've had on the meta when introduced, which ones were the best and worst and how the meta has been impacted by their removal.
@@3.2187_Kilometres you should have seen the custom metagame that made the Stealth rocks mimic the primary type of whoever used them. Mamoswine, Heatran, Landorus and Swampert were extremely OP there, Ice, Fire, Ground and Water type rocks are absolutely ridiculous.
I fooking hate Leon's Charizard and Leon himself! I'm always at the Battle Tower, having fun sweeping the teams of creepy cops, deranged artists, bored cameramen and furries in Eevee hoodies, and then Leon shows up and ruins my fun! XD
The problem with stealth rocks is that too many pokemon have access to the move. Too many are weak to it. At least spikes and toxic spikes are balanced.
Yeah honestly of all the moves that probably should go it's that. Everyone's always talking about metagame warping things as reasons for bans, rocks should have been tossed a long time ago. Like Game Freak gets rid of Pursuit and Hidden Power, but not this?
Gamefreak/Nintendo: Acknowledges Charizard as one of the most popular Pokemon in the franchise; giving it 2 Mega evolutions, unveiling its Gigantamax form before Venusaur and Blastoise, giving it a spot in Smash Bros, making it one of Ash’s most powerful and prominent Pokemon in the anime etc. Also GF/Nintendo: Lol you can only switch Charizard in once.
Ethan C. Bad thing Defog didn’t clear Stealth Rocks before Gen 6 and Rapid Spin is a terribly weak move that can be blocked by Ghost-types and is literally only used because of Stealth Rocks.
I like to think that blissey can pull anything out of that sack where it keeps that egg. That why it can use thunder and some fire moves, its got a flamethrower and a tazer/tesla canon.
Blissey is a normal type (they learn many types of moves) and it’s a good move for her since she is bulky and can come out first to set up and always come back to be a stall beast.
How can Tauros Thunder, Fire Blast, Blizzard? Anyway it could be better if the stats were boosted but the movepool was limited. And Rock type moves, the problem is the Rock type Pokemon have a limited use because almost any pokemon can learn a Rock type move. Tauros doesn't even have a small veal as a pre evolution. Anyway Chansey well maybe it should go to fairies and not to normal typing since it's egg group it's fairy, so as to have some logic knowing every special move. Anyway normal typing but i think Stealth Rock should be a privilege of Rock type Pokemon only, as also Rock Slide which can be learned almost from every strong physical attacking pokemon.
So good for coverage, added by fact that ground type is SE to 5 moves and only resisted by poor defensive typing (grass and bug) And combinated with sr on field if u wanna avoid it by switch in to flying type it could cost minimally 12.5%
I love how stealth rock has been blatantly over powered and over centralizing for so long, that people are thinking the one counter to them Heavy duty boots, is in itself Over powered
@@Ropalme1914 ah that makes sense. Pivoting moves been Broken IMO. I still standby rocks having been an over centralizing force for years tho. I mean it invalidates ENTIRE types, unless the mon is broken like Volc. There needs to be more counterplay to pivot moves in general, something I've thought of would be to have sticky Hold keep the Attacker from switching out after using a pivot move on it.
Spinners became much more common after stealth rock and toxic spikes shenanigans in 4th gen than any other generation. In third gen meta rapid spinners were rare though multiple layers of spkes were annoying it can't hurt you much. Fourth gen almost forced most into picking a spinner
In 6v6 rocks are viable but in my opinion your literally wasting a move slot in battle stadium. Where the battles are 3v3 and this are shorter(I Actually prefer that over somgon
@@akapbhan In gen 2 spinners are extremely common with overused having 4 of them (cloyster, golem, fortress, starmie), with the metagame revolving around spikes, it is important to have a plan to deal with them. about 90% of gen 2 teams feature rapid spin and a significant amount of them carry a ghost type (gengar, misdrevous) to block spin (usually offense teams). In gen 3 rapid spin is a lot less common now that the spike setters can be taken care of with magniton's magnet pull; so teams deal with hazards with ether magniton, rapid spin or heavy offensive pressure).

I'm in love with the move "court change" it's the best tactical move in the game and puts all the hazards on the opponents side and also gives you their screens. The number of times my cinderace KOed an Lapris using GMax and took its veil is uncountable. The first turn they gmax and I switch into cinderace for not effective damage on gmax resonance then court change the veil tanking the hydro then using bounce and preventing them from using max resonance again. Played like a fiddle every time. Not to mention all the times I've court changed a full set of hazards to the other side completely ending their strats
Gen 4: introduces Bug Buzz, X-Scissor and U-turn Bugs: Oh we finally have some available and good enough offensive moves. Gen4: introduces Stealth rocks Bugs: I guess.... most of us will wait
This was a genuine treat of a video- it explored the effect of a mechanic on the metagame, not just the role of a single pokemon. I would love to watch more
As others have said, videos like this about other moves (along with items and abilities) would be awesome. Off the top of my head, here are a few that O think would be cool to cover: Thunder Wave, U-Turn/Volt Switch, Substitute, Dragon Dance, the other hazards, Will-O-Wisp, Agility, Baton Pass
Love this different take on competetive analysis. Individual moves can arguably be just and more important than Pokemon, in many cases access to a single move can make or break a Pokemon's viability.
Opponent: *Sets up stealth rocks* Me sending out Cinderace with heavy duty boots: *I'm about to end this mans whole career* Also me: *uses court change*
Opponent *kos cinderace then spins then sets rocks* thank god they decided to sack cinderace just to get rid of rocks was worried about the extra momentum libero provides
Everyone else: banded libero cinderace is the truth Me still using boots court change: if it ain't broke, don't fix it, well maybe fix it a little cuz libero is still busted
Alright guys, imagine Stealth Rock but Ice Types. The catch is this move is mostly exclusive to Ice-Type Pokemon instead. Unlike current stealth rock that can be learned by many non-Rock/Ground/Steel Pokemon. How far Flygon and other dragon will fall tumbling down to the lower tier?
Stealth Rock annoys me on so many levels. It's significantly more devastating than other entry hazards for significantly less investment, and it's damage being affected by type puts it wildly out of step with them. It has broad distribution. Gamefreak apparently relies on its existence as an excuse to design overpowered Pokémon. It's the only entry hazard in the Let's Go games, and there are no moves there to clear them. And finally, from a thematic perspective, invisible floating rock shards are just plain silly. Stealth Rock is a grand slam of awful design that's tolerated more than it's liked.
It's more that official comp is always doubles, and they focus design around that. Hazards are almost nonexistant in VGC rules, as it's 2v2 with 4 Pokémon.
I still remember this as my first FSG video I watched. Im back to rewatch since its been a while. I just gotta salute to the video that put this channel in my sub box :)
GF: interduces stealth rocks Charizard fans: Nooooo pokemon is going downhill masuda fix this ): GF Later: gives charizard two busted forms and creates HDB
What about history of items? Like the life orb or the choice band or the legendary oran berry. I think that would be a good idea. Not the oran berry obviously, but it would make for a good April fools joke
It's weird that when they took Stealth Rocks away from some pokemon from Gen 4 to Gen 5, it was from Pokemon that should actually know it. I saw that Pokemon like Blissey, Miltank, and other squishy pink things still got Stealth Rock, yet stuff like Sandslash and other pretty bad ground and rock types lost access to it. It would be a good chance to spread the usefulness around rather than continue to make the best pokemon keep having the most utility.
Yeah I would love a video about the intimidate ability. Over the years, he's referred to it as the best ability in the game and I would like to hear that explained, especially with obviously broken abilities like wonderguard and shadow tag.
Wonderguard is only on one Pokémon that will go down in one shot if the ability is bypassed by any means and Shadow Tag is banned everywhere, so they aren’t actually viable. Intimidate is simple, but it works on the Pokémon that have it.
Wonder Guard are signature ability for a Shedninja with 1hp, which can easily get killed by using super effective move, hazard, sandstorm and hail. Only Wobbufet get Shadow Tag which can't attack and then Gothielle in Gen 5 which is Untiered without it and Mega Gengar in Gen 6 which later on get banned to Uber. Itimidate drop attack of every opponent pokemon who are currently on the battle and has no good counter except Defiant, Competive, newly buff Inner Focus and Mirror Armor.
I never really liked the idea of hazards being "effective" against types. They should just be damage hazards and have different possibilities (Ghosts and flyers immune to spikes, Rock/ground/steel not being effected by Stealth Rocks, or less damage isn't enough) and maybe have other special setup hazards (we did get the webs so that was good). Maybe we could have had a grass or psychic one, or even a fire one. There was/is a lot of possibilities. It feels like having them been as impactful as they were (and the feeling of them playing favorites with certain ones and certain pokemon) was a bit much. They should not have been the as high of a priority as they were... I mean seriously? Suicide leads just so you can get rocks? Hazards just felt TOO good.
The problems with SR besides its set damage based on type was that many, many pokemon can learn it. If it was only limited to rock types learning it, not only would it have been more balanced, but given rock types a more viable option
@@jotarokujo3603 I dunno about after gen 5 but SR was the only Hazard tha affected its target based on type Spikes did not do that. Toxic Spikes didnt either. The only thing “Affected” by type was poison types can absorb them
@@gumtoonistbeats7842 I deal with it fine. But that doesn't mean that they are/were not super good. and maybe Grass Beats rock the Stealth Vines could override stealth rocks? So you can't have 80 Hazards on the field at once.
What does Scorching Hands do? Was it introduced in Isle of Armour?
Also, why the exception for Gen 3 Moltres?
@@beta511ee4, I think it was a typo and supposed to say Scorching Sands, a new special ground type that has a 30% chance to burn.

The impact of stealth rock was immense
I honestly don't understand how moves like baton pass were banned while stealth rock who's completely dominant competitively stands strong
The viability of some mons js completely dependent on stealth rock
They had to buff defog and basically give it to everything just so people had a chance of countering it
There are whole strategies around punishing/preventing your opponent from removing rocks
I wait for the day where this completely broken move is finally put to rest
Permanently
It would make for a much healthier competitive environment
Well‚ it's more interesting to look at each mega individually.

The problem with stealth rocks is that too many pokemon have access to the move. Too many are weak to it.

Well Stealth Rock should be set by Rock, Ground and Steel Pokemon, how on earth a Blissey can Stealth Rock?
It's blissey.
I like to think that blissey can pull anything out of that sack where it keeps that egg. That why it can use thunder and some fire moves, its got a flamethrower and a tazer/tesla canon.
@@johnnystreet9197 so basically bLissey is doraemon of the pokemon world
Blissey is a normal type (they learn many types of moves) and it’s a good move for her since she is bulky and can come out first to set up and always come back to be a stall beast.
I've been thinking about this for a while, and now that the door has opened up, How Good Was EARTHQUAKE Actually?

So good for coverage, added by fact that ground type is SE to 5 moves and only resisted by poor defensive typing (grass and bug)

Unless you're somebody like me who loves to run doubles and not have a flying or levitated Pokemon all the time.
It was too available to too many Pokemon like toxic.
I love how stealth rock has been blatantly over powered and over centralizing for so long, that people are thinking the one counter to them Heavy duty boots, is in itself Over powered
Nah it’s overcentralizing for ages. And if you think it isn’t, then why is it that you have to calc and factor in rocks.
@@Ropalme1914 ah that makes sense. Pivoting moves been Broken IMO. I still standby rocks having been an over centralizing force for years tho. I mean it invalidates ENTIRE types, unless the mon is broken like Volc.

The impact of stealth rock. More like the usefulness of having a Rapid Spinner!

I saw that Pokemon like Blissey, Miltank, and other squishy pink things still got Stealth Rock, yet stuff like Sandslash and other pretty bad ground and rock types lost access to it. It would be a good chance to spread the usefulness around rather than continue to make the best pokemon keep having the most utility.
i really love how chill this video is it's different from your normal videos but in a good way
Yeah I would love a video about the intimidate ability.
