He watched them kill people and make plans to rob banks. He was tortured by them. They starved him for information. If they let him go he could tell the police or the O'Driscolls where they were hiding. And why wouldn't he? If anyone was tortured and then released they wouldn't just say "Thank you for being nice to me while you had me stood up on my legs for days on end, pissing on myself and shitting myself, and now you have let me go!" Of course they would go to the police or their friends. The only options were join or he had to die. Or keep him imprisoned forever, but that would be a waste of food and time. So yes he was forced. If he didn't join they would have killed him.

I feel like Kieran's death had an unspoken effect on the gang, not so much as Hosea and Lenny, but still. He wasn't with the gang long, but he tried hard to earn his keep. He saves Arthur's life, and I think slowly he could have warmed up to Bill, made him not feel so lonely, at the least they could have been friends, and maybe Bill would have chosen a different side....
I think when Kieran died was the moment Bill's chance of joining Arthur's side was gone. Kieran would've joined Arthur and Bill would know Kieran is doing what's right and would've helped Arthur too.
