    God bless you sir. 100% the most helpful video I’ve seen on UA-cam. Nothing makes me swear more than trying to get my battery cover on and off.

    Great to see a permanent solution. I've lost one side panel and all the dealer does is put a new panel and new clips, which don't work any better than the previous ones. It's amazing to me that Harley don't fix this.

    • @ocdetails

      That's because people will buy Harley's just for the name. They are far from being the "best" bikes made. My Suzuki Boulevard never gave me a tenth of the problems my Sportster has given me and I've only had this bike less than a month. I had the Suzuki for 6 years. I'm going to ride it this season, but chances are that I'm going to get rid of it before I register it again and go back to dependable Japanese craftsmanship.

    Brilliant!! I spent 30 minutes yesterday with my hand holding the cover shut because it kept flying open. I pulled over 3 times to try and get it to stick, but it is just done sticking I guess. I have plenty of these cable management ties and am going to go out and fix this right now! Great idea!! You, sir, are a GENIUS!!

    I just bought an Iron 883 from my local dealer with only 400 miles on it. Absolute mint condition with exception to this left side battery cover having the only scratch or ding on the bike! It's my first HD, and you were the first video I found on the issue. Not only do I now know what to do to fix it, but I also now know what happened to the thing. Great video brother, thank you for sharing an excellent tip!

    IF you have a 2017 Sportster, as I do, the battery cover WILL NOT FALL OFF. Harley took care of the loose clamps. To remove the 2017 and newer, you MUST press in on the bottom of the cover and lift at the same time and then the top retainers may release the cover. I'm sure HD has a tool to release the bottom latch, or a long fingered Gorilla on staff. I wound up breaking the bottom latch and use a zip tie to hold the cover in place. Also the battery wiring has changed. The positive post is now under the seat, not the negative post.

    Awesome fix! I had mine replaced on the 2016-48 sportster. HD mechanics here did a great job installing a new cover tight with new clips, but it is a time bomb waiting to happen again.

    Another tip for others which I personally did to mine ; I just kept it as is but added a plastic zip-tie on the bottom of the cover (this way if it were to slip off it wouldn't be lost and would still ride along till popping it back on) . I like your top fastening idea here though it would mean that you'de have to take off the seat to every time .

    You can also use "re-useable" zipties. If the velcro gets wet it might come loose.

    • @philipstaite4775
      @philipstaite4775 7 років тому

      Good point - it doesn't look like there's very much overlap of the velco for it to stick. Zip ties would be more secure. Or maybe you could overlap two velcro straps at each slot (making for one longer one) and wrap it around the frame once or twice to get more velcro-to-velcro engagement.

  • @andygrewal6867
    @andygrewal6867 Рік тому

    Very helpful...shop just lost my cover, ordered me a new one..I was about to zip tie the new one on, but now I'll use velcro straps! Zip ties suck, have to cut each time, and often the cover will tear through the plastic.

  • @DRPowell

    I have those same straps for guitar cables. My plan is to run the narrow end through the slot in the cover, then through the slot in the strap, possibly gluing that end to the cover, then trimming and gluing the other half to the frame.

  • @JEE_13

    Nice! Great idea. Get rid of those clips altogether. They barely held anyway. I lost my cover when a hidden dip in the road met my bike at 75mph. Didn't realize it was gone until I stopped an hour later. 🙃 The new cover doesn't even get close to clipping so this is exactly what I need. Thanks

    I recommend when doing this to get some plastic car door edge molding and put it on the edge of the side cover to prevent metal to metal contact between the cover and the frame, which will rattle and wear the paint off the frame.

  • @danield831
    @danield831 3 роки тому +2

    I like this fix much better than the zip tie fix. With zip ties it means you have to cut them and replace them every time you access the battery. Velcro is much better solution for obvious reasons.

    Every time I go over train tracks or hit a pot hole by no choice 😒 my cover would pop Off! I have it zip tied in one hole for the moment but I am DEFINITELY getting the velcro.

  • @Majorvideonut2
    @Majorvideonut2 6 років тому +1

    If I'm seeing correctly... It looks like you can attach the velcro around the frame first attaching the velcro to itself then put the end thru the cover and pull it to the velcro on the frame. Not a bad idea. That keeps me from dragging zip ties around to replace the ones I cut off.

  • @davidmacgregor5193

    Harley finally realised that there was a problem with Sportster battery covers flying off, so the added an extra slot near the front of the cover, my 2011 XL883N has the extra slot in it. The slot allows a cable tie to be slipped through it and round the frame tube, if you use a black nylon cable tie you'll have to replace it every time the battery cover is removed to gain access to the battery and fuses. These Velcro ties are a great idea as they can be used time and time again.

    Last year I drilled a small hole in the top of the cover just big enough for a small zip-tie to fit through it and around the frame. The only disadvantage is having to cut it off for any maintenance which is no big deal if I'm in the Man-Cave but if I'm out on the road, I keep spares in my tool bag. No biggie.

      Same. I found mine, really beat up. Gonna sand it, buff it, repaint it.

    I have a 2013 sportster, never had a problem from falling off. Maybe if you lost a cover when riding 100% odds the cover wasn't in the bottom tab.

    I keep getting a battery light and after about 15 miles my bike dies. I keep rotating out batteries. If I ride real slow and don't give it a lot of throttle the battery light won't come on and the battery doesn't drain. Any suggestions?

    When it plugs into the bottom is there supposed to be something that makes it stay there mine's a 2004 and I got it from someone else so I don't know what I'm missing other than those clips on the top but I put those pieces to hold it up like with the velcro and yet the bottom just seems to not be hooked up it's like it doesn't fit is it possible that there's some sort of rubber down there missing or something

    So, this is the same Battery setup as my 2016 1200. But ALL of the Videos to Change the Battery on a Sportster have the batteries backwards from this. My setup is like the one you have in this video with the positive on the Right Side. I want to take out my battery but ALL of the videos have a reversed config and doesn't look like mine! can you please pull out this battery in a video? oh and keep your hands out so we can see what you are doing.

      Sorry man, this bike got sold years ago, but as long as red is on red, it doesn't matter what direction its pointed at all.
