My '06 Sportster Custom had 12" stock shocks. I put Progressive 412s on it that were 13 1/2'' and put 1'' lowering blocks to angle them back slightly and the ride height was only raised about 3/4'' to 1''. It's nice having that much travel and the bike hasn't bottomed out since. Without the lowering blocks, you could see daylight above the tire.😄
Putting "Sport" back into the Sportster. Next up a basic "dump and pump" fork oil service? Some fork preload adjustment caps will also give some ability to adjust for rider weight, sag numbers and allow more balance suspension response. A $70 cap set will do the same as a $300 cap set for this.
Good job Spite. I have two sporty's. One with the 15" Progressive shocks. (That one has a two into one pipe... so no clearance issues. ) The other one, same pipes as the bike in vid... but with ohlins, set at 13 3/4"... That's all I can get without clearance issues with those pipes. As you pointed out, much better handling, ride, and clearance compared to stock.
Hey man If you can...do answer my question I'm 5'6 - 5'7 65kg guy And think about buying a new shock for my iron 883. Do i go for those 13 inches or a 12 inch? Cuz i REALLY want to upgrade the rear suspension . I also do carry a pillion sometimes. What would you recommend?
Check the outside surface of the drive belt with those 15" shocks. On rubbermount Sporty anything more than 14" will get the belt rubbing on the inside of your sprocket cover, below and behind the sprocket. I run 13", and have the cover removed after discovering rub mark on the belt (and inside the sprocket cover). Looks better without it anyway. Disregard if you did a chain conversion.
@@hetfield_75 depends on budget. For the lower budget I think these Burly 13” are about as good as it gets. I’d stay away from Legends, they’re about as good as progressives/burly but cost 4 times as much. If you wanna go all out Either Fox or Ohlins is the way to go. Ohlins has a really nice set of standard shocks for around the 600usd mark.
The steering feels lighter because the geometry is better with the rear taller. With the rear lower your effective rake and trail is increased. Can confirm the Progressive 412s are nice - I have a pair on my Intruder.
Well, that's 1/2 the ride sorted. It may be worth the time to redo the fork tubes too. Many folks overlook the importance of matching the front end to the rear end. It's not a hard job, just takes a bit more time than a rear shock job.
This shows what an agricultural design sportsters have been for decades now but must confess changing to longer shocks improved the handling and looks 100% still the new sportster 1200 is long overdue.
This is very helping dude, I want to add this same shocks on my forty eight because I'm planning to replace the tires with a more tall ones, also the stock shocks are too stiff for me... I'm gonna go with a bobber-tracker style, kinda rare but it works in my city xD
Anything is better than stock. I did the drag specialities height adjustable shocks on my sporty in 13s. They came in chrome fit my bike better than the burlys.
You just need a scissor lift jack you would just put it under the frame in back and it would lift the rear swing arm to a neutral position so you can take the shocks of effortlessly without having to take the slip ons off
Look, I actually purchased the Sportster S (yeah, I say that a lot in comments) however I really love the old school shit. I actually really admire those bikes. The purity of it, man versus machine. I also ride a Triumph without ABS. Of course I ride the bikes differently. Live to ride but ride to live. Know the bike you are on.
This got me thinking. There's a huge after-market. THere's a ton of stuff that can added or changed out. I'm not a wrench and so, I'm ripe for the picking. What was so great about this vid from Spite is not only seeing what he did but the reasons why and what it would do. Serious stuff. Maybe there could be a video from time to time 9maybe there is) where the aftermarket could be unwrapped so to speak. Just sayin'.
even on the highway there can be some pretty rough bumps here and there that might bottom it out but. Id guess someone out there agrees with you though, since someone put those shocks on there in the first place.
Why is it that this just seems to be yet another episode of "Harley Davidsons Are Unfinished Motorcycles". Cams, pistons, pipes, heads & not just once but Stage 1, 2, 3 & so on. Now the suspension needs to be replaced. I just don't get the Harley way of doing things.
I’m in the market for new shocks for my sporty cause I’m not sure if the dyna shocks the previous owner installed will create any issue(plus they’re stiff af) these look good and I assume have some semblance of suspension
I was told once that monoshocks will always outperform twin shocks. If this is true, why don't all modern bikes utilize monos, and is it possible to convert a bike from twin to mono?
"Will always" is a bit extreme. The twin Ohlines setup on a Triumph Thruxton R is going to outperform the budget mono shock on an MT-03 for instance. But dollar for dollar, if one is designing a bike from scratch - yes, the mono is going to perform better. As for the reasons they ever still use dual shocks? It looks old school for one, for two it frees up that space under the tail section if you want/need that space for something else. Yeah, it is a serious modification (more into the realm of customization) to switch from twin to mono, you're almost definitely going to have to heavily modify the frame and/or swingarm. Other components will likely need to be moved as well. I've seen a couple custom classics converted to mono-shock and I like the look myself. Retro-modern. Pretty rare though, and many people apparently think it's dumb, think it ruins the classic lines. Shurg.
Converting a sportster to mono is done. Though there is some tig welding and fab work involved. Get a softtail if you want a good mono shock setup from HD.
As a Sportster owner, I challenge you to do a DRZ vs KLR hypothesis. I also own one of the prior. One last old school vid. Authentic prior to propaganda.

Spite, my guy, the two-toned springs are so you can get “slammed” looks without “slammed” handling. The color is nice, but it’s meant to be an optical illusion.
Those two springs actually have different spring rate, lighter one handles the small bumps and the stronger one takes care of harder hits, thus more than an optical illusion. Very much improved handling as a result.
I mean, your not wrong. The whole point of the soft tail design was to make a bike that looked like a rigid frame while still giving the dentists and wannabe toughs cushion for their bum-bums.
