I picked a stray kitten out of the road last summer and he had a botfly larvae burrowed under his chin. Getting that thing out was by far one of the most disgusting thing I've ever done. But the kitten is almost a year old now and pays me back with an abundance of precious snuggles. Totally worth it.

From what I understand if you slather a thick layer of Vaseline or petroleum jelly over the botfly hole it will suffocate it and it will poke out to breathe enough to get some tweezers to pull it out. So gross but I bet that kitten got so much relief!

Medical Laboratory Scientist here - the bot fly - aka Dermatobia hominis - is a large chunky fly that has quite the way of reproducing. It abducts a mosquito, and while holding it, lays its eggs on the abdomen of the mosquito. As the mosquito flies around landing on mammals for supper ( in this case a man wearing baggy open shorts with no underpants ) it lands on him, and the eggs sensing the heat of his body, hatch, fall on the skin of his scrotum and burrow in. Then we get a situation as shown in this video. The only way I would think to fix this is surgery, otherwise, due to the pain in the area, you cannot squeeze or pull them out very well. When I was working about 15 yr ago, we heard of a man that had surgery for 4 botfly larva in his scrotum - OUCH! Often to extract these say when on other body areas, people cover the hole of the larva with petroleum jelly to force it to somewhat stick its nose out for air. Then using hemostats or medical tweezers you carefully and slowly pull it out. The spines you see on them are nasty as everytime the worm moves, those spines cause pain and they also provide friction against being pulled out. Lousy miserable fartin' flies !!!

Tbh, before taking the course I had no clue whatsoever what parasites were and learning all of that information made me not want to eat any vegetables, cow related products, pig related products, and raw food. For e.g. I used to eat raw sheep meet, and sometimes even walk on soil almost barefoot. Soil is literally were half of parasites are in due to fecal contamination by animals... So, I got obsessed with it and scared the hell out of me. Always clean fruit+vegetables of any soil that you see if you want to minimize getting infected. I even once saw an orange that contained a moving larvae. I still eat fish as commonly as before. Oh, also in restaurants, I think many worms are present in uncleaned kitchens, and would spread in their food. Even some cook raw meet with fish in the same utensil, so you may be eating meat, but you also may be getting a worm from the fish or vise versa. And so, now I avoid all meet products from restaurants. But, I do still eat hamburgers from time to time.

Botflies are pretty common in cattle and horses. The flies lay their eggs on the legs and they work their way up and find an opening and live under the hide. In high school in FFA they would remove the larva in the cattle by placing a glass soda bottle over the opening, neck downwards. A good hard smack on the bottom of the bottle with a hand wound pop that sucker out into the bottle. They have special bot fly knives for removing the eggs from the legs of horses. There are also some gaiters that they can wear that keeps the eggs off their legs.

if I'm understanding correctly ( i could be mistranslating as English is not my first language. ) , this is mainly found in the homeless population or people with poor sanitation access (maybe because here its mostly flys). I'm a medical student in brazil, it's like a rite of passage for residents and interns to be the ones to remove those. Back in the day and when we don't have materials available we put a piece of pork meat on top of the lesion and the larvae just go towards it and lodges itself in the pork.

I’m so thankful that people like this poor gentleman are willing to share information like this on tv, where it will get seen by millions. I feel it’s so important to learn about these things, even if it’s rare. My step sister will even ask me about things and start with “This is really gross, but…”. I never say eww, or anything else that makes people self conscious. I’ve always been medically inclined, so I try to think of the simplest things first, give her a few suggestions, and end with “just make sure you ask the doctor at your next appointment, or make sure you make an appointment asap”. Our bodies are meant to function a certain way, and when something looks bad, hurts, or smells bad, it usually means something isn’t cleaned properly, or isn’t functioning correctly, so it’s important to talk to someone you trust if you aren’t sure you should see a doctor or go to the ER. You don’t have to announce it on facebook or something, but you shouldn’t be too embarrassed that you don’t seek help. Poop, puss, vaginal issues, lumps, bumps and the like are our bodies way of telling us something isn’t right, it’s that simple (to me anyway).

Bot flies can lay their eggs in your clothes if you hang them on the line. In the US, pets get these larvae from places like dirty carpets, where flies have laid their eggs and the animal rubs it into their skin. Wolf worms or bot flies or tamba flies, they all do the same thing. He could have picked it up from sitting on something or it was in his underwear or trousers.

I LOVE having regular doctor visit. I grew up without that, and now that I can afford it and have good insurance I take full advantage. Physical therapy, dentistry, podiatrist, dermatologist, optometrist, psychiatrist. I feel blessed. Our health care system is kind of difficult to afford for most people. I got lucky, but it took decades.

the notoriously bizarre emperor Nero saw himself above the law and castrated Sporus before he married him. Little is known about Sporus' background except that he was a young man to whom Nero took a liking. Nero considered Sporus to be his wife, and their marriage ceremony included Sporus wearing a bridal veil, Nero providing Sporus with a dowry, and afterwards, a wonderful honeymoon in Greece. (Nero also married two other men, although they were not castrated because in those marriages, Nero was the wife). Sporus was one the most famous eunuchs and Nero was one of the weirdest Roman Emperors

Botflies are very common in the US, you don't have to travel outside the country to end up with one. I knew an entomologist and his wife who both ended up with one each after a camping trip in Pennsylvania. The flies also lay their eggs on low lying grass, when an animal or person brushes against it the egg can end up deposited on a person, which is how they believe they contracted the fly. Those barbed hooks on them are designed to keep them in their "hole". They're both disgusting and fascinating at the same time.

My cat got a botfly on her cheek once. I read that sometimes botfly eggs are laid around the entrance to rodent burrows, and then embed onto predators who hunt the rodents.
My best guess is this guy may have pooped in the woods and brushed against some infected grass.

They'd just pupate and drop out of the skin to turn into flies. It hurts a lot more as they grow larger, and it can cause a serious infection, so it's definitely recommended to remove them, but they can't reproduce in the body like some other parasites. An adult fly has to lay the eggs either on you or on an insect that bites you.

My brother always thinks he has parasites and has been treating himself with ivermectin for over a year. (He had to cut back on the dose because it makes him so very ill...) Unfortunately, this is a very common thing for mentally ill people to think. Of course, he thinks all doctors are lying and/or don't know WTF they're talking about when they tell him he _doesn't_ have parasites.
There's nothing more we can do. It took _decades_ for us to convince him to even see a doctor, and his conclusion is that we are all crazy and don't know anything...

You don't have to strip in the jungle to potentially get bit.
I was in an artist colony in a rather rural, wooded area, and when I left, the next time I pulled down my pants in the bathroom, there was already a tick lazing around on my belly.
It wasn't biting or hanging on. It was large, not swollen, and not a tiny deer tick. So I was startled but not scared, and I returned it to the woods whence it came.

Botflies are found in both South America and Africa, this type of botfly is found in South America, in Africa Botflies don't have hooks surrounding the body. There are multiple ways of getting them, the first is direct contact, where the fly lays the egg on your skin, the second is the fly will lay the egg on an insect the commonly sits on mammals, the third way is they lay their eggs on your clothes well you let them dry after you washed them. That is why in places with Botflies in the area, it is important to iron all your clothes, including your underwear. And that is most likely how this dude got it on his junk, his underwear was drying, it never got ironed, and when he put his clothes on, the larva hatched, passed through his skin, and started to eat him alive.

Central and Northern Florida had an infestation at one time of “Screw Worm” or “Bott Flies” that limited the raising of cows and sheep. The state was forced to go all out in the irradification of the fly. The fly is still present, but not in the numbers that suppressed the raising of cows, sheep and even zoo animals. As a LPN/RN at a hospital in then rural South Miami we would see people in the ER there for the removal of a Bot Fly. Florida is one of the largest cattle states. The Mormon Church is the largest owner of cattle ranches, farmland and retail property in Florida. The Church own 2% of the total land in Florida! Just some trivia. Check it out!
