Dr. Youn. I love your channel and think your advice and attitude is great. So I feel it best to correct one minor error you made. A gallon of milk is not 10 lbs. It is 8 pounds. This is still a lot of weight but not 10 lbs. According to some sources on the internet it is actually 8.34 pounds. However, my information comes from the fact that liquid measurement is equivalent to weight in pounds. Therefore, one pint (2 cups) is equal to one pound. There are 8 pints in a gallon therefore there are 8 pounds in a gallon. Maybe I'm splitting hairs but I have few excuses to point out any errors in your videos... so I thought I'd take advantage. LOL! You do great work. Keep it up.

She also may have Lipedema, or even Lipo-lymphedema, which is usually overlooked by doctors. It is even misdiagnosed as Lymphedema, as you just showed the diagram of......Lymphedema usually affects one limb, where as Lipedema affects both. There is no cure for Lipedema. Diet and compression aids may help with the symptoms and shrink it some.......but there is no cure. Lipedema is genetic,.

Knowing a few people with lymphoedema I know this is already tough on its own.
One of my friends was an absolute sports nut. But at one point, despite being basically on what medically was a starvation diet, she started getting bigger and bigger. And a number of doctors told her basically to cut out the burgers and maybe do more sports. They did no examinations whatsoever, no blood work, no nothing. They just looked her up and down and said something to the effect of „get in shape, fatty“. She got all the leaflets about healthy eating. One also recommended a consultation with a dietician.
She had super low energy all the time and dreaded each visit to a new doctor because no one would listen to her and take her seriously. Eventually she broke down crying in a doctors office and fell unconscious. She woke up in hospital and ended up self discharging because she did not want more doctors to keep telling her to eat healthier food. At that point she started hating doctors.
She was at the absolute end of her tether. She later admitted to seriously considering suicide and having done research on how to best do it painlessly. Which shocked me deeply because nobody really knew how bad it was. On the outside she was always chipper.
Only through online research she found out that lymphoedema was a thing and sought specialist help. And thankfully she got it. She is much better now.

When I worked in the hospital in the radiology department we had 2 patients, over the years, who had gastric bypass surgeries but didn't follow the diets and it caused abdominal ruptures. They were each hospitalized for nearly a year due to infection and destruction of tissue. She actually lost so much weight that doctor now was worried she was going in the opposite direction. It actually made her gain 15 pounds. But she did it and got back to a healthy weight and he did skin removal surgery for her. She had skin removal, surgery on her arms, legs chest, and stomach. My cousin was one of the first people to have gastric bypass. She lost A LOT of weight - and actually had her excess skin removed. Insurance paid for that because she had to have a hysterectomy and the surgeon couldn't do that operation with all the excess skin. She looked fantastic ....for a while. However, she went back to her previous eating habits, gained all that weight back (and more), and ended up in a wheelchair, completely disabled. She died at a very young age. Before the operation, she told me that she was supposed to eat 2 oz. of food several times a day after the surgery. I told her to do that instead of the surgery and she would certainly lose the weight. If she had been able to control her eating - and stop drinking sugary sodas, she would still be alive.

People need to realize the connections between food and emotional and mental health. I can remember as a child literally stuffing myself with cheese sandwiches whenever my mother left me and would disappear for days at a time. It was like the food physically pushed those feelings deep deep down so I could no longer feel the anger. I actually had an uncle who caught me one night doing it. He said it was my choice whether to do it or not, but he hoped that I would try to understand what was motivating me to do so. A few years later, in my late teens, I finally acknowledged the "connection" and with time and maturation was able to deal with the feelings without the food. It really is life-changing when you can let go of the baggage.

Chronic pain has a high rate of coomorbidity with eating disorders. Either overeating, as eating a lot allows the person to forget the pain for a brief moment, or some can become more anorexic, because they are so stressed they struggle with digestion, and would space out meals as much as possible to avoid because their chronic fight or flight response make eating very difficult and unpleasant.

Ok, get up and get the food themselves. It is NOT a kindness to keep feeding them. The most reprehensible is the sickos who want to keep their loved one fat.

I know this is an old comment, but I want to say a couple things.
      1. I do find it sad and frustrating that they do not seem to have trained dieticians and psychiatric counselling on this show. Most people do not get to this weight without some form of mental health issue and not treating that feels like a recipe for disaster. You see it occasionally when people do well and then relapse soon after. The doctor tests them to loose weight initially, so why not have them take some counselling sessions?
      2. Sometimes we can’t see the problems our actions cause until it’s too late. Her family was not trying to hurt her. They genuinely did not see why their actions were wrong, and they got used to doing this over years. They do not want her sad and know that food helps, and despite that being a problem, they do want her to be okay. It’s a mistake, and while perhaps we all cannot say we enable this behaviour, I’m sure you’ve enabled someone else before. All I’m saying is to be a bit more understanding.
      3. It’s the processed foods and sugar. It is expensive, but it is actually often cheaper to buy garbage foods than healthy ones. Not to mention healthy foods can be hard to find depending on the area and season. Also, while not her case exactly, some of these people use delivery apps or the like to make life easier for them. This means they’re incentivised to eat rubbish that’s high calorically

Everyone has their own medical conditions and NO ONE should shame a morbidly obese individual.

I have struggled since I was 13, when my parents started telling me I'd be so pretty if I just lost weight. Part of that is from Daddy's hatred of his own weight. I saw a tv documentary on a lady here in South Africa who had parasites in the lymph nodes and her one leg was as big as this lady. The problem was that she lived in a very poor rural area and in our country there is no help for hugely overweight people. Her family managed to hire a 1-ton truck to get her to hospital- but the hospital staff didn’t know what to do with her and our government health system is NOT geared to deal with overweight patients. By the time they finished filming I think the most help she had was for a nurse aid from the nearest clinic to come and help her husband bathe her once a week. I hope they have found some way to help her to at least get rid of the parasites and bring the lymphoedema down.

It's usually very complicated, and a type of co-dependancy. Like people who enable alcoholics or drug addicts, they often don't know how to handle the situation.
Telling an adult "no" isn't easy, either. And if you love someone you want to make them happy which isn't always the best way to handle things.
It takes a lot of strength and willingness from both/all sides to overcome this.
In parts we are all enabling one type of behavior or another, just not all of them end up being so unhealthy. It could be small things like always doing laundry because your partner doesn't know how even though they often do and just weaponize their "incompetence".
But it seems they have learned their lessons as well and kept supporting her. So I guess they got some talking to (and help to learn to actually help her).

This poor girl. Whenever I hear stories like this I think back to when my children were small, about 3 and 5 years old. I had one friend who also had a 3- and 5-year-old but she was almost abusive toward forcing these two girls to eat the amount SHE thought was good for them. She would insist they sit at the table until they finished everything on their plate, even when it took hours. We're lost touch but I wonder now if those girls have weight problems. It was awful to watch. I was never happy if my children didn't eat much but I never forced them to finish. I had to remind myself that the amount I put on their plate was only a guess at what they needed-- and I'd rather they have enough than underfeed them. And I knew, at that age, little bodies don't need that much food to go on. But some parents seem to miss that part.
But as for Christine, I'm glad she was able to overcome her problem. I wonder if she and her family went to therapy together to work out the issues causing this problem.

This is like a huge trigger for me, because I had to spend most of my life taking care of my mother, who was just like this only instead of me enabling her, and she would manipulate me into enabling her without me realizing because I was a child so this went on for most of my life and now I really have nothing to show for it except a dead mom, I could be successful with my music I could maybe have a better body or be healthier or or maybe even have my own family now but no, I spent most of my life, if not all my life taking care of someone like this, and as much as I loved her and she was my best friend I feel like I feel like it was just all for nothing, I really only find solace in my music, and helping other people with their strict mental diet, as it helps me stay on my own strict mental diet and now after losing 130 pounds I hate my body even more, got 40 lbs more to go, which causes me to hate myself even more and hate myself even more for even putting myself thru this, but I put myself through this for my mom, no one would help, I didn’t even have emotional support, my friends and family like abandon me because I put all my love and care into her. It really did show people’s true colors to me. I’m really happy for this girls outcome, the horror of this had been my reality for so long as a care giver, I have come to realize over the past few days that maybe subconsciously and consciously because I am so uncomfortable in my own skin cuz of the way I look, that maybe that hinders the manifestations I do want to co-create with my creator everyday, so I stay stuck in a vortex with the same repetition like a death loop. Always wanted to try your skin care so maybe I will start there.. will prolly delete later cuz this is so painful to share. @DrYoun

I had to be isolated, worked from home kind of kept apart from other people. On line friends were a life line. But always maintain enough distance and a healthy level of anonymity. It's good online practice. I'd have said go to Twitter but that's a hot mess. A private face book group on topics that affect you is best

I did not join a gym, worked out at home a bit - but TOTALLY changed my diet. Home cooked meals. I still add brown sugar to many but also garlic, ginger etc - great for the body! I've struggled with my weight for most of my adult life. I know I'm an emotional eater & that makes it more difficult. I've lost a relationship due to my weight. He could not handle it & I weighed 225 at the time. He would get upset that losing weight was so hard for me. I have a slow metabolism. I am postmenopausal & have hypothyroidism. All of which makes it hard to lose weight, not impossible just harder. He did all of the cooking. Something he loved to do. He wanted to introduce me to different cuisines & new foods which I loved & appreciated. BUT it did not help me lose weight. We did the KETO diet at one point. It works, but for me it was SLOW going. I do think the high calorie meals made losing much more difficult. My allowed calories were 1200-1300 per day. I would eat the same salad everyday for lunch & then come home to a 800-1000 calorie dinner. It was of course higher in fat (that's KETO). I did lose weight but for me, this is not a diet that I can maintain forever. He tried so hard to control what I ate, thinking since he was losing much much faster than me, I must be doing it wrong. Trying to please him by eating what he wanted me to (the high calories) & working out at the gym 6 days a week, & having listen to his "lectures" on a near daily basis...I got so stressed I found myself snacking at work on foods I actually did like. So frustrating. I am no longer with him (we are friends). I am losing weight by eating healthier, lower carb, smaller portions and staying within my calorie allotment. So far so good & I am eating "normal foods". Enablers mean well, I believe most really do want to help but...they don't realize they may be contributing vs helping with the weight loss process.

I think that our bodies never evolved to comfortably _lose_ weight. So even if we have a great deal of fat that we need to burn off to get healthy by dieting, our bodies are going to view that weight-loss scenario as a kind of starvation situation.
A few times, I've wanted to lose some weight. It _always_ feels uncomfortable. My body is telling me something is wrong and I need to eat more food. It's easy to say "Oh, then it's just a matter of willpower and pushing through it," but the desire to eat more to keep from lowing weight is instinctual. It's like telling your hand to put itself on a ripping-hot pan on the stove for five seconds. Can you push through it and override your instincts that are telling you to pull your hand back? Maybe. But we'd forgive people who can't make it that long, even if the reward is ten thousand dollars. The body just freaks out too much, and we can't always wrangle it in.

People sometimes think of food as bad, an addiction, something to control or be afraid of. It's unlike addictive things because it's necessary for life. When they get education about foods, meals, proper portions or planning, it's possible to see it another way. As a life benefit and pleasure. Combination with exercise tho.
Losing weight shouldn't be about denial or sacrifice, it should be about balance. If you do a denial diet, you'll simply crave what you don't have. You'd be better off with an Add One Thing with Remove One Thing. Sustainability and longer lasting. You won't miss the missing thing because you've added a nice new thing. You add an activity or more water or more fruit, you take away one old thing or a portion of it. Some people remove alcohol and lose a lot of weight. Some people start steps, 1000 to 2000 etc every day. Everything you do makes a difference. Diets or "must lose weight" does not

I can't believe someone with knowledge in nutrition/diet would recommend 1000 calorie diet to anyone. That would indeed lead to a VERY fast weight loss, especially with someone as heavy as this patient, but it would slow down their metabolism so much. They would never be able to eat more than this without risking weight gain.
When people overeat to this extreme, lowering their daily calories to what's considered normal (1800-2000 kcal a day) would still lead to fast weight loss due to the fact that they are used to eating so much more and the fact that their resting metabolic rate is much higher than that of a person with a healthy BMI. I certainly hope they only reduced her calorie intake for a short period of time just to check if she has the will power to restrict her eating. Otherwise, it's a recipe for disaster.

I honestly feel bad for people that end up in 600 Lb Life. There's no doubt that their weight is an incredible insecurity for them - I definitely wouldn't want to be the subject of a series that's literally about the world's fattest people

Pretty sure they pay for the procedures.
Would you rather be insecure your entire (very short) life, or endure the shame of being on public television for one episode, and drastically improve your quality of life, and extend your life?
Would suck to die at 35 because you had too much shame to be on one episode of this show and have your procedures paid for

I hate that they always start with putting close up camera's right when waking up and then putting them naked in the shower or how they struggle getting on the toilet. Like, is there no other, less demeaning, way to show how they live their life at 600+ weight?

I'm blessed with a caregiver (my mom) who will never enable negatively. Nor will she allow me to become too complacent. I developed a BAD over-eating disorder due to the depression from the multiple conditions I have (hEDS, PCOS, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, and fibromyalgia, just to name a few). I'm almost bed bound, in constant pain, and pain meds don't work. Opioids even only take the edge off. So it's understandable. But I've kicked that disorder almost completely and am on my way to a surgery to help me get the weight off while still having such low mobility.

A tip to keep yourself from feeling hungry and to be able to not eat much food if you're trying to loose weight:
Eat very small snacks throughout the day that add up to your maximum calorie intake, no real "meals", or at most one or two. Seriously, even 1/2 a cup of trail mix can keep you from feeling really hungry for two hours or so. Granted, it depends on how big your stomach is. (And eating a lot of food at each meal stretches it out btw.)

I've had better success with the opposite of this, which would be intermittent fasting. With your method, you never get your blood sugar down to where it needs to be to fix insulin resistance.

I can't imagine how difficult it would be to be mobile with those masses, and they probably hurt too. Getting those off would make a big difference in her life.

Totally unintended pun... Dr. Youn, "Last time she was weighed she was 670 lbs. How much of that weight is due to the lymphedema? Believe it or not, probably not a ton of it." I honestly looked up at the screen to see if he gave us a winky face, but no... definitely unintended. 🤣🤣

I had gastric bypass surgery when I was 26 years old... I almost died... I have issues with it till this day... My stomach ALWAYS hurts!!! Food makes me nauseous!!! I don't really go out to restaurants, because I'm never sure if I'm going to get sick or not... There's a side effect that most people get called "dumping syndrome". It's when you eat something and you getting really nauseous, hot, sweaty, extreme stomach pains, vomiting and diarrhea... It's horrible!!! If I knew what I know now, I would never have had the surgery... I did lose 203 pounds... I wish I would've exercised and ate better!!!
