I live in Germany and my beautiful grandma has lymphedema. Seeing her taking those pills which will make her have to go to the toilet every hour makes me really sad because grandma is almost 89 years old and can’t walk that well without any help. Thank you Dr. Youn for talking about lymphedema.

I'm really sorry your grandma is going through this. Unfortunately diuretics are not useful for lymphedema, diuretics which are often refered to as water pills have little to no effect on this type of swelling. If she has lymphedema those pills will get be helping her legs at all. Maybe she has oedema which a build of fluid in the body that causes the part of the body to be swollen. Lymphedema is treated with lymphatic massage and wearing compression garments. I have lymphedema.
The willpower and determination of this woman is amazing. She lost all that weight on her own almost without surgery!

Usually I find this doctor a bit cold and mean but not with her because she was putting in the work.
@@African.empress in the case of this patient, her extra weight was almost all her lymphedema which is why he wasn’t as harsh, but Dr. Now has to be harsh so that his patients understand the severity of the situation and that they have to get their act together and lose the weight. Like Dr. Youn said people can eat through their gastric bypass surgery so they need to have a little harshness on them because Dr. Now wants the best for his patients.

This show helped me make up my mind to have gastric sleeve surgery. I was 250 pounds at my heaviest and I'm 5 " 5 but losing weight after 40 years old became hard. I'm now 160 pounds and happy 😃

I know, she was so honest about how the servings were unhealthy, rather than the frequency. That kind of self-awareness and readiness to accept help is unfortunately not something everyone has at the start of their journey.

Other than her lymphedema, she wasn't particularly obese like other 600lb participants. I guess any amount of weight loss drastically improves lymphedema.

Dr. Youn literally says in the first minute that it can be caused by cancer treatments and other things that have absolutely nothing to do with being overweight. @@batacumbaRight? What a ridiculous statement. I’d love to see what she has to say if she went through what happened to me. I was at a healthy weight before I had my son. After that, I was put on hormonal birth control and I gained 40 pounds. I was eating less and moving more since I had a newborn. I have since struggled to lose weight. That and being put on cymbalta really messed me up permanently, and for me to lose any weight, I have to exercise intensely EVERY day and stay under 500 calories a day. She’ll sing a different tune when it happens to her. 🤷♀️
@@batacumbaSort of….significantly overweight people are much more likely to get lymphedema, as the sheer mass effect can damage the lymph tissue. It is a bit complicated as anything that damages a lymph channel can cause it: as said here, it can be mass effect from weight, or after lymph nodes are removed for cancer treatment, or in third worry’s countries, parasites.
But if you stick to people who don’t have parasites (which are only in a few parts of the work) and who haven’t had lymph node surgery for cancer, the main factor causing lymphedema is obesity, and the main treatment is weight loss.
Unfortunately, sometimes even weight loss doesn’t fix it, if the damage is bad enough to cause the lymph tissue to be destroyed, and it will grow back, but only as nonfunctional scar tissue, not as the specialized fluid-removing tissue it was. But usually weight loss can reverse it.
Does anyone remember the pretty redhead who lost hundreds of pounds, was a great success and married the guy who stood by her and helped get her away from her toxic mother. She is beautiful, inside and out ❤❤

That was one of the most positive episodes of my 600 LB Life. I did not think she looked all that bad before she started treatment and she was a really good looking women.. In my opinion her large lymphedema on her legs is what really looked abnormal. I really enjoyed this story because she was able to change her life style and loose all that weight on her own. Dr. Youn mentioned that skin removal would take time because all the blood vessels needing to tied off. I think in this kind of situation this procedure would be so satisfying for both the patient and the surgeon.🥰

I worked at a nursing home, and there was a patient whose legs weighed 100lbs each!
You see a lot of my 600lb life where they’re resentful, pointing fingers etc. this woman is so wonderful, she takes responsibility, she’s motivated and she also has a lovely radiant smile and I wish her all the best. What a lovely lady ❤
This was a refreshing change to see: she's awesome for losing all that weight on her own.
I've known a few people with this. Even when they lose weight and become pretty skinny on top (when they weren't obese to begin with) they still have to waddle around cos of all the weight in their legs. I really hope we find some more effective non-invasive treatment for this. It's an evil cycle.
Longterm dehydration has consequences
Not a doctor, but... As far as I understand, the lymphatic system is not very well studied. There are very few treatments that deal well with changes in this system. (Compression and elevation, seriously?) We have conquered most bacterial infections and we understand the circulatory system pretty well, but the lymphatic and the female reproductive systems are lagging behind.
Given the general concept of the show, I applaud Dr. Now for realizing gastric surgery wasn't even needed for her - the skin removals being enough surgery for her body to endure. I appreciate her honesty at the beginning and how much she stuck to the plan.
That is the sign of an ethical surgeon. It’s understood that if the person doesn’t need the surgery, or if they likely won’t benefit from surgery (like those who can’t regulate their eating to some degree, as demonstrated by the pre-surgery weight loss) then the surgeon should say no.
Almost all surgeons do this, and the few that don’t end up in trouble eventually.
It’s so refreshing to see a happy ending on this show!
She lost all that weight by just eating better and exercise! That’s impressive! I really hope she can get back to a normal type of life!! Wish her the best!
It can be done….it’s not easy, but if people have really had enough, want it and keep trying, it can definitely be done.

I had skin removal surgery after I had lost 265 lb. I weighed 400 lb at ruex and y . It became medically necessary to have abdomnioplasty because my excess skin started taking all the calories I was ingesting, meaning it started snow balling. The skin was causing me lose more weight to create more skin and lose more weight.
25 lb of skin was taken off and I had body dismorphia. I seen a 400 lb woman in mirror. Lowest weight 95lb. I started seeing a therapist for 2 years and gained 35 lb. They consider me a true success at 20 plus years out.
She's doing such a great job!!!

I am nowhere the weight of this lady but I still get “idiopathic” bi lateral pitting edema in my legs.
It is exhausting! I feel like my legs weight 500 lbs. also the skin gets very tight.
Eventually it just goes away on its on. So strange. I’m can’t imagine what it must feel like to be that large and also battle swelling. Hats off to this lady! I love when these stories have a happy ending.
This doctor is definitely right about 2,000-3,000 calories in the standard American diet! It's incredibly alarming.
I am so proud of this lady. I watch the show all the time and rarely do you see someone who actually follows the diet. So kudos to this lady.

No matter how many different people and their episodes I watch on this show. I’m always dumbfounded too see how large the human body can expand. It’s utterly insane! Also the plight of these people always reminds me that my own plight could be way worse. I find their efforts to get healthy encouraging, too say the least. This woman made all the changes Dr Now told her too. Despite the difficulties. I’m so happy for her.

Me, fighting each and every day despite being in pain 24/7. Doing the simplest tasks are overwhelming with all my medical conditions but I'm still grateful for my challenging and sometimes medically bizarre life. 😂
I’ve been fighting against suicide for over 20 years. I’m still here & I’m still fighting. Thank you for your comment. My fight is not clearly seen by others & I’m judged harshly for it by those I care about. I had to cut my parents out for many reasons but one is that they kept telling me to get over it & just be happy. I told them to walk into a hospital & tell someone with cancer to get over it & stop having cancer. That’s just not how severe depressive disorder & suicidal ideation works. If it did, there wouldn’t be depression or suicidal ideation!! Anyway. I fight every day for my own life so, again, thank you for your comment. #AlwaysKeepFighting

Sometimes partners just don’t want to be yelled at so they bring the food to keep peace.
It's dysfunctional because that's a form of abuse. The partners need to leave but these relationships tend to be very maladaptive.
That's not love.

It's nice to see, but somebody on that show who actually does what they're supposed to and what they need to do. I was surprised how much of the lymphedema decreased with just her good diet. That's amazing. The American healthcare system is set up to treat, but not to prevent. It's this kind of treatment rather than medication that needs to be emphasized.

I am in the process of trying to get a diagnosis - my legs have been swollen for a while, but the left leg is now increasing in size and is also very painful. My left hand an arm are also swelling .
I have a doctors appointment in 5 days, and hope to see some progress.
😮this happens a lot with thyroid problems. Often only one leg will swell up. Also many people are never tested for things like lipodema, thyroid, and lymphedema. I hope you will find relief. Obviously the problem is something that was subtle and missed for a long time. By the time my thyroid problem was diagnosed, it had been going on probably since puberty.
After watching this video I'm going to stop complaining about my body! Feel so happy for this lady . I wish she will get the results that she is looking for!
I just have Edema, 3 years now. Both legs mainly from little under knee down all way to feet. And it hurts and sucks. Im glad mine aren't as bad as hers, i know in some ways what she is going through. Mine luckily does not leak either, the pressure, fire feeling, hurts to walk, stand, put legs up hurts.

@@littleboots9800 I have. I've tried everything, also am a Nurse, done it all. Meds, compression, elevation nothing works, meds make it swell worse, compression just pushes it further up my legs/body and dont do nothing, elevation can't do to much of because of my other health issues but amount I've done hurts, feels like flame thrower and 5 elephants, 3 whales squeezing and stepping on them. Ive been to the point just use to it because been 3 years since this Feb 11th i got it.
@@caitlinbockus850 Oh I'm sorry. I can empathise as I have suffered too, mine as a result of poor circulation after DVTs in both legs. I can imagine being a nurse you are on your feet all day too which can't help either. I had a job that was on my feet all day too but unlike you I have managed to find relief with a combination of various things. Your comment brought back the memories of how bad it was and how bleak a time it was mentally.
Funnily enough the insane itching of the skin was almost worse than the pain, like burning, being bitten by fire ants.
I'm very sorry you're suffering this way. Long term chronic pain can be very wearing mentally too. Do they know the underlying reason for your edema? I'm sure being a nurse you've had a lot of advice, that can be hard too when you've thrown everything and the kitchen sink at the problem.

Chronic CRPS here. Diagnosed age 26, almost 3 years into it by then, and too late to do a thing but pain management, to another level I might add (gabapentin + buprenorphine). In the last couple years, my lower legs + feet have started "ballooning", so I can understand to a degree what this woman is going through. No clue why + my right big toe (the outside) has started to go numb (I do have the "shin bone nerve" that's damaged). I am about to see the orthopedic surgeon for all of it. Been wearing compression socks (knee-high) for 2/3 weeks now and... at last it's gotten to a "normal" level for me. But anyway, Dr. Youn, long story short, this is even terrible at a much much "lower" level than it is for this woman. Poor gal! This hurts and itches like the Dickens. The itch, the discoloration, the weight, and the fact that your skin is stretched to a degree it really can't stretch at. It's so fragile! If you scratch, it's a wound!

@@vampiraJ Thank you so much. I know. I only got on a pain program 9 years into my disability. They gave me something but not something strong enough. Doctors finally realized I was in bed 24/7; this couldn't go on like this (+ not moving much at all is quite dangerous as well). But lately I have been going over my pain limits and that's the other extreme which is quite dangerous as well, with obvious problems to boot!

I have stage 2 lymphodema according to a lymphodema specialist. I'm currently on medication for it and have been elevating my legs, but it's really not doing anything to get rid of the swelling 😢

Lot of respect to the doctor as well. Its always better for the patient to avoid surgery when possible, but isnt as good for the doctors wallet. Good for him, looking out for the patient over the clinics bottom line.
Only in the USA would the doctor's wallet be an issue. Americans deserve better than their rubbish health system.

There is a young lady who works at the grocery store. One of her legs is like this, but the other one is normal. I'm assuming an issue from some type of surgery because, I also knew another lady who had surgery on her lymph nodes under her armpit, which caused one of her arms to develop this. It wouldn't have happened without the surgery.
To me this looked a lot like lipedema...
It was symmetrical and it didn't effect the feet...
Also she was describing more pain than is usual with lymphedema...

My dad just had a 12 lb soft tissue sarcoma removed from his thigh along with his bicep femoris and the the other to s muscles next to it. It took two and a half hours for the removal of the tumor and then several hours for the plastic surgeon to replace his muscles with his lat. It was at least an 11-hour surgery
That looks more like LIPEDEMA rather than lymphedema. Lipedma is bilateral and is a genetic adipose disorder. It is not well known, even by doctors, even though it has been a diagnosis in Germany for decades. This can be removed by specialized techniques in liposuction. A correct diagnosis is important.

The docotr's method is actually pretty good, testing the patient with their diet. It makes sure they don't relapse

Hi Dr. Youn! I've been following you for a while and love watching your videos.
I'm working through my Prediabetic diagnosis of eating healthy and getting more active. However, my doctor and dietician suggested to me Saxenda which I know is like Ozembic.
Did you ever do any videos on these kinds of weight loss drugs?
Look closely at the side effects ofozempic and similar drugs, if you are only prediabetic, turn things around with a diet and lifestyle change. I am diabetic an nobody could pay me enough to touch those drugs. There is lots of info on the downside to them. What I showed 2 friends has made them say no way to their doctors, one told her doc about the risk of gastroparesis and her doctor said "oh, so you know about that". People want the quick fix whereas there are sustainable changes to your diet that are much better.

That woman's doc is a rare breed...asking about diet (which almost never happens) and then putting her on a high-protein, low-carb diet. :)

I have lymphadema in upper outside thighs on both legs. It hurts and they are sometimes mich bigger and heavier than other times. I always had weird shaped legs but when menopause started they big funky part of my upper thighs got heavy with fluid. I fight it constantly. I pray daily my legs won't get that big.
Are you wearing compression?
@@evaglave5194I can't afford it. Nothing off the rack fits because my upper thighs are so big. I am on a fixed income and extras are hard to do.
Is your thyroid out of wack? I've known a lot of people get that from poorly or under medicated thyroid problems. My doctor had to prescribe me potassium a d vitamin d 3 as well, because I was so deficient that my thyroid medication wasn't working.

Within 3 days of the Cov shot, my husband and I both had instant lymphoma (I was only 100lbs before). Also related was abnormal sinus on the ultra sound. In this case,sinus doesn't mean nose, it means heart. And...I did loose my heart...my husband died a few months later. Nothing will ever be good again.😢❤

I lost 127 pounds in nine days in the hospital. They gave me dietetic medicine both by pill and IV. I am wearing a catheter and still taking the medicine.
I’m confused so all this weight was due to diet? I figured it had to have been a circulatory issues and needed surgery
Diet inflames these issues to where surgery is to dangerous. Once she gets to a healthier weight and is healthy enough in general there is more they can do for the lymphoma.

High protein low carb makes you feel full. If it was prescribed to people with eating disorders it would probably reduce the need for gastric sleeve surgery....not to mention providing essential nutrients for mental health to make good life decisions.

Is it possible for them to use liposuction on the legs to reduce some of the fat or is it just inflamed tissue in the legs?
How fantastic that the Dr put her on high protien low carb and she lost weight. Animal protein is better for you then plant protein, but protein is better for you than carbs.
No - animal protein is easier to dispose, but it raises the risk of high blood pressure and diabetes!
If you eat a big variety of plant protein it‘s better for your health.
@IZaubermausI I'm pretty sure it helps. Lots of veggie eaters have gone meat eater and have vastly improved their health.
@IZaubermausI the graph of what raises blood sugar starts with fat, barely raising blood sugar, then protein, minimally raising blood sugar, then carbs spiking blood sugar. Protein, more importantly, animal protein does not cause diabetes. Donuts and sweets do. I went full blown carnivore for 6 months and healed my high blood pressure, I cannot imagine how something that doesn't cause your heart to race can cause high blood pressure?
Would a doctor consider amputating her legs if she requested it? It sounds as if losing weight through dieting won't do much to reduce swelling that isn't caused by fat; amputation may be her only solution.
There is a lymphedema reduction surgery and lipoedema reduction therapy both dune by a special liposuction by a plastic surgeon there's a couple clinics in the US that do it. He and fat between one is the Cleveland clinic other is a clinic in Jacksonville FL. I'm hoping to get it dune out atleast my first consult this yr. I went the extreme route had the sleeve done in hopes of helping the legs it did but not to the degree Im hoping for, atleast so far. Down 165lbs. But my veins n valves are inherited I had my 1st vein at 14 I was a normal weight for my height no complications and athletic in HS. The therapies didn't work I'm looking for a solution not to manage them.
What is your reaction to the videos showing the lipodema treatment where the doc squishes a bunch of little fat blobs out of an incision, similar to how Dr Pimple Popper pushes goo out of giant cysts?
I think you're getting it confused with a lipoma which is completely a different issue
@@jillk1973 no, I’m not. It’s called lipodema. It’s a painful condition where there are tons of pea or marble sized fat nodules permeating connective tissue under the skin.
