This performance comes in as a close second to his Hot August Night performance. This performance has a very intimate feel to it. I think it deserved a standing ovation. No one could ever adequately cover Neil Diamond on this song. This song was written only for his voice. This song is #1 on my top 5.

Neil explains in the intro to this performance that "it is a stream of consciousness song. In other words, you don't listen to the words. You just feel it." Other than actually having seen Neil do it live, this BBC 4 is my all time favorite performance of Holly Holy. And you are absolutely right.....kudos re the production and the camera work. I was also 9 years old in 1969, and remember this song on the radio. It wasn't until 1976 did I realize how great Neil is.

Definitely one of the greatest but also, as you said, underrated singer-songwriters ever. I'm glad that someone finally reacted to this particular song, arguably one of his best ever. One of his main qualities is also that, like Frank Sinatra, you actually understand every word he's singing. His phrasing is impeccable. Thanks!
