  • How is it even possible that a group's rendition of their own song could be THIS much greater than the original? Wow. We are treated a full 2-minute riff shred by the amazing Terry Kath, and even Cetera's voice has extra edge and funk.
You gotta watch this if you're a Chicago fanatic -- or even if you ain't!

That solo is widely considered one of the greatest live guitar solos of all time! I was very fortunate to have seen Chicago at the Fillmore East about 3 weeks before the Tanglewood show. Terry was on fire that night as well. RIP guitar master.

My favorite Chicago song. Our HS band would play a concert at our local fair at our small town, and this was the song they always ended the concert. I could hardly wait to be old enough for my turn to play it at the fair. Of course I played trumpet, but we would always have some bring their guitar to play with us. Our stage band would play it at basketball games, too. Terry Kath was the best and was killing it at this concert. Love it.

Terry Kath is often overlooked as a guitarist due in part to his tragic death at age 31. Kath was a heavy drug and alcohol abuser. Chicago drummer Danny Seraphine said that Keith could handle more drugs than anyone he had ever met. Kath also started collecting handguns and regularly carried them on his person. One day, while visiting the home of Chicago roadie Don Johnson, Kath was playing around with his .38 revolver, spinning it on his finger, pointing it to his head and pulling the trigger. He then picked up his 9mm semi-automatic. Johnson grew worried and expressed his fears to Kath, to which Kath replied, “What do you think I’m going to do? Blow my brains out?” Kath showed Johnson the empty clip, not knowing that a round was chambered. He inserted the clip, lifted the gun to his head, and pulled the trigger.
Another reason why Kath is often overlooked as a guitarist was expressed by Chicago trumpeter Lee Loughnane, who said, “Unfortunately, his guitar playing has been overlooked, and probably because of being in such a large band, particularly a brass-oriented band. If Terry had been in a trio, he probably would have been right up there with Jimi Hendrix, who idolized Terry.”
Many artists have died before their time, and the musical industry has had more than its fair share of them. Janis Joplin. Jimi Hendrix. Jim Morrison. Kurt Cobain. Amy Winehouse. And Terry Kath, whose face is carved out on my _Mt. Rushmore of Favorite Guitarist of All Time_ alongside those of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler.
    Maranatha.

Those guys back then truly lived on the edge. It’s what made great music and it’s what got them dead before their time. Thanks, Bobby.

I went to High School in Springfield and our whole school went nuts when they first came out. That's back when concerts were cheap.

Excellent review, like being in a music appreciation class learning about bands you know little about!

I was a huge fan as I was living in Chicago when their first album came out. Saw them 4 times within the span of 1 year 1974-1975. Terry and Danny were two of the best ever. Sadly after Terry died in 78, Cetera took over and turned them into mush. Now they are just a horrible cover band. Leonid and Friends do better versions of Chicago than Chicago does these days.
