A Quick Day of Gold Panning

- A quick day of gold prospecting and panning in a new location. Though gold was found here before, the location has already been heavily worked and I only came away with a small amount of gold. The rocks in the area are slightly metamorphosed with the area containing dikes and plutons. Some rocks near by are a higher grade of metamorphic rock and contain garnet. While panning, I found small shards and garnet crystals. Gold seemed most abundant in the top most layers of the gravel bars in the creek.

Hmm, that gold does look quite fresh and the garnet recently broken out of matrix - is there a skarn in the vicinity? If that area is convenient for you, perhaps consider contacting the claim owner and striking a bargain.
Fresh burn areas are a blessing and a curse for prospecting -- the charred organic matter and loose silt make a mess of the drainages, but the subsequent erosion tends to expose outcropping on the hillsides you'd never see otherwise.
There are no skarn deposits in the area. I believe most of the gold is originating from small quartz veins but no successful load mining has ever lasted more than a few years. They have recently logged around the area which helps also with erosion. A small high banker might do ok for this location since all the fresh gold seems to be on the surface.
Those are beautiful garnets … i will try panning again like i used too as a kid.
I have found loads more garnet panning and sluicing than I have gold.
Good for you for getting out there. Looking forward to your next adventure.
Thank you!
Sounds like your in Oregon haha maybe not though
