I am so grateful to have found your channel. It is nice to see the geology of another area of the continent. I collect rocks from the Canadian shield by Sudbury, Ontario and further along the North Channel of Georgian Bay and into Lake Superior. I really enjoy your content and filming.
Theres a lot of petrified wood in montana, but that opalized wood with the distinct bark on it really stands out. I have quite a bit of it but have no idea where it comes from in montana. Check it with a UV light. a lot of that opalized wood from montana has some uranyl ions in it and will fluoresce.
Some of them do glow under UV. All of the petrified wood I collected in Montana was from older river alluvium deposits. I think the rivers collected it from a source closer to Yellowstone, possibly where the petrified forest is located. If so, the petrified wood would be Eocene in age.
Just found your channel and love it! Learning a lot from you. Well done! I was picking up volcanic stones this wkend and some have tiny black crystals sticking out. Are these obsidian bit, you think?
If they are tiny black crystals within a volcanic rock, its likely not obsidian. There are different possibilities of what mineral it could be. If you find a geologic map for the location where you found the stones, it should tell you what type of volcanic rock is in that location. Then you can look up what minerals are often found in it to see if any match what you have.
New rock enthusiast here. Thank you for this. This is very informative and makes me want to explore more within my home state of MT, so thank you! Also edit: Do you use an ultrasonic cleaner to clean your crystals or some good old fashioned elbow grease?
Glad you enjoyed the video. For cleaning, I usually just scrub them down with a toothbrush and water. Sometimes I'll use acids to clean off oxidation. An ultrasonic cleaner would be fun to use and interesting to see what results it would produce.
Underated channel!

Those are some fantastic rocks. What part of Montana did you find those in?
