  • I climb a mountain side to go looking for some abandoned mines that are in the area. The mountain contains a good amount of different mine portals, and tailing piles from old mining activities. These mines were old gold mines following different quartz veins within sedimentary rock. There are also some igneous intrusive rocks in the area as well such as granites and mafic rock. Besides gold, secondary metal were also recovered which were lead and silver. One of the mine portals ended up being larger than expected.

Nice hike! The piles you refer to as tailings are actually waste-rock piles; tailings are the material discarded after milling.

Thank you for pointing that out to the film maker @Geoforge, whom otherwise made a good short film. I cringed just a little bit every time he said "tailings", which are you correctly described. In Australia "waste-rock piles" are also known as "Mullock Heaps". Most people probably roll their eyes that anyone would be so petty to worry about pointing out such an innocent mistake in terminology, but language is important. It was a good video and some people watching it may take the term used as fact and continue to use it and passing the error on to others, etc. My OCD is happy now :-)

If I had to guess, and evidently I do since you didn't bother to tell us as of 19:16 into the video, I'd guess that you were exploring in northern Idaho. However, much of the mountainous West looks similar. As you go forward with your channel, I would advise you to at least mention the state in which you are exploring. You needn't specify the name of a mine, or even the county in which one is located if you are trying to protect a claim site from excess visitation; but it makes it much more relevant and interesting for viewers such as myself to at least have a location narrowed down to one of fifty! I've watched many more videos from some UA-cam producers that were candid about their locations than I have those of others who are always circumspect about sites.
