Early Spring Gold Panning

  • A day of spring gold panning with high spring runoff. The waters are cold and flowing fast and high from the snow pack that continues to melt here in Idaho. Not much gold was to be had on this gold prospecting adventure but I'm sure there is more to be found somewhere once the waters lower and calm. I will have to return to try once more and to explore the mines in the area.

Too bad you forgot your bucket. I think you were in a decent spot when you found that piece, depending on how deep the bedrock is. Chances are, that was flood gold, because you hardly dug down when you found it. If you want better results, I'd recommend trying to dig past the overburden. The tighter those large rocks are packed together, the better. Some cheap waders might help you not get so cold in that water.

The bucket would have really helped speed things up. It was a beautiful day regardless out there on the creek but that was the only spot I could find that looked decent where I wouldn't have to worry about being washed away down stream. I didn't show it on camera but near the faster and deeper water the rocks are bigger and much more packed together like you mentioned. I plan on returning once things calm down up there and hopfully I can get into a spot with some of that material. I figure the harder it is to dig in the better. I have some old water boots I forget I own but once your in the water long enough you don't feel the cold anymore, just feels like sharp needles for the first 5-10 mins haha.

@@GeoForge Lol that's true. The creek where I search occasionally is fed by springs, and is really cold even in summer. And yeah, the harder those rocks are packed into the gravel, the longer it's been there, with the loosest material being deposited in recent floods. If you dig into material that's almost like rusty concrete (like red conglomerate), that's the good stuff. My creek is shallow, and I still have to get below 2 to 3 feet of overburden to get to better material (relatively, the creek isn't very productive) in a lot of places.

I cant get anywhere close to a water source atm 😩
Mosquitos are nasty this spring .
Takes %99 of the enjoyment out of panning lol .
Hopefully they burn off soon ! Then its bears to worry about 👍Cant wait to explore again⛏️
Looked like an awesome time out there ! Regardless of success

Thankfully up here the Mosquitos are not bad right now but sometimes its that gnats that are more annoying as they fly into your face and eyes constantly. I've been meaning to pick up one of those nets you can throw onto a hat to keep them away from your face. I've never ran into a bear yet but they are out there I'm sure. Hopefully those bugs clear out soon for yeah.

    Lovely stream of water.
I guess there's wisdom in the idea of selling shovels and pans to gold panners instead of digging it yourself lol.
How do you find your mines? I wouldn't mind going to one myself and grabbing some ores.

I've always heard the real gold is in selling the tools to the prospector. As for the mines, there's a few websites I use to find them. Mindat is a popular one but I also like using mrdata from the USGS. It has a US mine feature button that will show you all the mapped mining related features in the USA. Here is a link to that one mrdata.usgs.gov/general/map-us.html#home.
I might make a video on these different websites in the future.
