This used to be called the Farrah, after Farrah Fawcett (google "Farrah Fawcett poster" if you have no idea who she was) (one of the original Charlie's Angels). We styled it by blowdrying with our heads upside down and then using a 2 inch (1 1/2 inch if that's all you have) curling iron going straight back all over your head and not wrapping the strands kinda vertically the way it is sometimes done today. Wrapping your hair in a spiral motion with the wand held vertically will give you the long kind of spiral curls, which is different (not better or worse, just different) from the curls/waves needed for the Butterfly/aka Farrah. Instead, slide the curling iron down horizontally after catching the strand you are curling, then roll the entire strand up (not under! very important) and backwards (towards whatever is behind you) while keeping the curling iron held almost horizontal. There really should not ever be a time when the curling iron is almost vertical, no matter where on your head you are curling. And you want each curl to be as big as possible, which is why you use ideally a 2 inch curling iron. I never even bothered doing this with a 1 inch or smaller curling wand, it just wld not look right. Let the curls cool and then use a wire brush with little balls on the ends of the wire, or a regular brush with a very light touch if that is what you have, and lightly brush out the curls to transform them into the beautiful waves you see in this video. Curlers never worked for me, though some used curlers, but, for me, it was critical to upside down blow dry first to achieve the needed fullness. There was a stylist in the 70's, forget his name, who started the whole upside down blow drying thing. He wrote a book called "Shake Your Head, Darling" or something like that. And that is indeed the final step, shake your head after brushing/turning the curls into waves. Brush out any curl clumps that remain, turn your head upside down while brushing if that helps, then tousel the whole thing into place by shaking your head. (Very) lightly spray if needed (I never did). The magic of this haircut is it makes virtually everyone look amazing.
