  • Get You Own PaleoHikerMD Patches HERE!: www.etsy.com/s... I recently did a video on using a windscreen with a canister stove safely, and many commented that using a windscreen is essentially mandatory with an alcohol stove. Now on this channel the proof is in the pudding, so let's put it to the test! And not only that, but let's test 2 different windscreens!

    4:25 This tall windscreen is upside-down. The slots in the top should be at the bottom, to allow fresh air to come in the bottom of the burn chamber.
    Might have been even better.

      I noticed that too. I suspect the boil time would get reduced even further, but fuel usage probably creeps up 3-4 grams. Good eye on your part.

    Glad I watched it. I have been using a aluminium foil screen. I wrap it closely around my pot. Definitely Boils faster.

    @PaleoHikerMD Windscreens do more than block the wind. They also keep the heat against the pot walls AND they reflect the heat back to the pot. Like a sun oven, the more reflective the surface of the windscreen, the higher the reflected heat will be...which translates to faster, more efficient boil. The height of the windscreen should be equal to to the "full line" of the pot. Extra height provides no noticeable benefit and adds unnecessary weight to the pack. Aluminum foil is popular for DIY, but I prefer windscreens made from the shiny "dollar-twenty-five store" cookie sheets that are sold in 2-packs. They are more rigid, easier to manage, and the offer the same reflectivity as a solar oven. Additionally, they can be used to pasturize water (in a clear bottle) simply by laying the bottle in the windscreen in full sun, similar to using a solar oven.
    One other consideration is the pot. The shinier the pot, the more heat it reflects away. Dull, darker pots absorb heat better, leading to faster boil times a greater fuel savings. Ever wonder why those ratty, dull aluminum cookpots we used to use boiled water so much faster than the shiny, stainless stuff sold at stores today? Not only does aluminum conduct heat better (think heatsinks), but the dull surface reflects less heat away. That would make a great video, btw. Appreciate all your videos. Be safe, brother!

    Really great to see a scientific test. Would have been nice to see the results summarized in a graph or chart.

    If a aluminum foil wind screen the fuel savings would more the make up the weight of the windscreen.
    I always use windscreens with all of my stoves.

      Yep. That is all I use. An aluminum foil windscreen and a couple small pieces of steel wire with 90 degree bends at the top to hold it in the ground on extra windy days.

    Good test and video. An inside test with a fan blowing a constant stream of air would make a clearer difference on the benefit of a windscreen. With zero wind it might be lighter to not have a windscreen and carry a little more fuel, and with a certain amount of wind it would be 'lighter' to carry a windscreen and less fuel. A windscreen is reflecting some proportion of radiant heat heat back of course.

    I found enclosing the tall windshield fully around the pot and stove as you did drastically slows the boil. I too have a tall windshield and now leave the front of it open a couple of inches or so, with far superior boil times. Guess your sick of hearing you got it upside down tho....lol Entertaining video all the same God bless buddy....bex

      Works 2-fold. Keeps heat against the pot wall, but also reflects heat back to the pot. The shinier the windscreen, the more efficient it is.

    You put the large windscreen upside down and left the air intake holes up top. You would have probably gotten a slightly faster boil with proper airflow.

    It probably doesn't matter much but I think the notches on the top of your tall windscreen go on the bottom.

    • @lapicker1010
      @lapicker1010 5 років тому

      Noticed that as well. Those notches have a purpose and do help to create a chimney effect. Actually, unless you use your windscreen upside down, the notches ARE at the bottom.

    • @alexandergutfeldt1144
      @alexandergutfeldt1144 5 років тому

      lapicker I noticed that too .. then saw the crack in the table top (only in that trial) and figured that took care of that ...
      I've had problems with my alcohol (toaks titanium) stove in strong winds, it basically doesn't work withouth the screen, in those conditions.

    • @artmias5538
      @artmias5538 8 місяців тому +1

      Maximum efficiency is achieved when the windscreen is the same height as the pot. However, there is no noticeable difference with windscreens past the height of the "contents" in a filled pot. Ie...if a pot is full 1" from the top, that's approximately where the windscreen can stop. Windscreens taller than the pot have inherent safety risks when trying to access the lid. They are also easier to knock over or blow over, plus it's just extra weight and space in the pack. Happy packing! Stay safe!

    Not all stoves are the same. Most sacrifice total burn time when they offer shorter time to boil, at least that is what I've seen with Caldera cone tests.

    Boil 2cups of water (500ml)
    No windscreen 8:50min 22g fuel used
    Windscreen 7:26 20g fuel
    taller windscreen 6:25 17g
    Notes:
    - windscreens were upside down. Results not trustworthy.
    - results are biased as they largely depend on how close the windscreen is to the pot. Snug=more heat transfer=fuel efficiency.
    - low wind conditions here means results are more noticeable in windy conditions.
    Result: completely worth bringing a windshield unless you have a shelter tarp/awning and cook in it.

      Besides block the wind, the windscreen reflect heat to the stove - helping in alcohol vaporization, and to the pot.

  • @frankdel5115

    Hi. I was wondering if possibly you coudn't just put the alchohol stove into a bigger rounder can which could act as a wind screen and a stand as well though you might have to put holes in the bigger can so it doesn't smother the alchohol stove as it burns. What do you think? Would this work? I have not tried this yet, only in theory. Putting your stove Inside a bigger can would protect the alchohol stove from wind and be a stand as well. Killing two birds with one can.lol.
