- The Damned Neat Neat Neat as shown on Supersonic, March 26th 1977. This is common on UA-cam, but other versions are lower quality, incomplete & the uploader has cropped the original 4.3 broadcast video to 16.9, which means some of the top and bottom of the video is missing.
Rebroadcast on Granada Plus 2001. Recorded by me on VHS Hifi in 2001, then transferred to DVD in 2003. This version is taken from the 2003 DVD.

I grew up with these guys as my hero's , I'm a regular housewife n my kids have no idea , I don't think they would believe me anyway.
Do you play this kinda music for your kids? In my house, the kids went into the mini van and heard Radio Disney and Kids Bop. They got into my car and heard the Ramones, Black Flag, etc.
Your kids need to hear good music - Play it loud and proud!

Me 2 grew up with Damed Clash Pistols Ramones Stooges Discharge Black Flag Bad Brains you name it!! watching this while doing some work on my laptop for day job and gonna tuck the little ones to bed soon .. my how our lives can change .. would not change a thing!!!
The Pistols and Clash got all of the press but imo, these guys blew them away.

This band is incredible. One of the best sounding punk bands I’ve ever heard. I love cranking up the volume and listening to this.

This is very best band
Saw this in 77 on Supersonic and the minute Vanian did that 'sssss' i was hooked.
Went out and bought it the next day!

Best "punk" band of the late 70s. Punk in quotations, because they were too talented to be classified as punk. Most underrated and underpaid decades-together band I know. 40 years later, they still put on a great show!

@@thursoberwick1948 Oh, I get it, my friend. I meant they are, musically, an echelon above the thrash-punk their contemporaries were playing. Phantasmagoria is more a work of art than a 1,2,3 anarchy album, as is most of their music. Punk is great, and I still love it, but The Damned are a cut above most musically.
But not a patch on Clash musically, and louder but no less melodic than the Buzzcocks. Punk was not defined by Sex Pistols and American garage
I mean PUNK is considered an "attitude".. It had to be taking in the context ot the era it was born in. Labels are a starting point ... I mean I first discovered the DAMNED in the 1980s on the Young Ones and by then they were into their Goth/Glam stuff.. Phantasmagoria was is a fantastic album. I also got into the Lords of the New Church, Siouxie and the Cure ... which all had that same "gothy" sound.. but I got back around to the early Damned, the more "punk fast" sound but they were still melodic.. they were still great songs .. and the DEAD BOYS had a TON of PUNK attitude.. I mean IGGY POP was PUNK too in attitude.. I don't know, I don't care. I am 55 I like what I like and I am not some Purist snob. I can go from PUnk , to Goth, to Dolly parton back to Marilyn Manson in 15 minutes .. shrugs.. (oh and probably Disco and Cindy Lauper thrown in there too.. etc etc)
@outoftheforest7652 I am the same, musically. If it's good music, I'm down. The Damned, to me, sell themselves short by lumping themseves in with simple 4 chord punk. Granted, early Damned, i.e. I feel alright, is edgier than later compositions.
It took me a very very very long time to truly appreciate this band.
i fell in love with them at the age of 11 because of Guns N' Roses cover of New Rose in 1993's Spaghetti Incident

I met Brian James once in a music venue. I said to him you are a pop star and he replied I used to be, I was very young and tentative what to do, I said buy me a drink, he replied you are mercenary and I replied that is right I was and he bought me a drink, quite a nice fella, although today I am TTotal. My favourite band in the day was The Clash but Neat Neat Neat was an iconic punk classic IMO very energetic, powerful, great stuff.

Jason Allen I took Dave as one of the pioneers of Goth subculture. This is a perfect example of Goth being a derivative of Punk.

Seen them again in 2024, and they are still absolutely magnificent.....
I was 13 when this was first shown and for me and many others, this was the first sighting of a real punk band on national TV. We'd heard about it and read about it but never actually seen it in the flesh. Punk bands had appeared on 'So It Goes' but that was a regional programme and only shown in the North of England. "Supersonic' was shown at teatime, just as we got back from school. To get a proper idea of how totally new and exciting this was at the time I think you'd need to watch the rest of the acts on the show to give it context (notice the next act up was Leo Sayer!). I clearly remember the reaction from Mike Mansfield and the woman next to him. They were laughing but I don't think they knew why - it was a nervous "what the fuck was that?!" kind of laughter. Personally I think the Damned peaked around this time. They never looked or sounded this good again after Brian James went.
I agree, their music wasn’t as tight and well written as it was when Brian James was their guitarist.
I dunno. For me, personally, the Machine Gun Etiquette era was my favourite. The first 30 seconds of that album still remains about the nearest I've ever heard to perfection on a punk rock record.
This song kicks the ass out of everything that's currently played on commercial radio.
I learned about The Damned by being a Motorhead fan. Apparently, Lemmy was a fan of bands like The Damned more so than fellow heavy metal bands. I blindly (deafly?) bought the albums "Damned, Damned Damned" & "Machine Gun Etiquette" and love both.
Likewise as a kid, I would read interviews by bands and if they mentioned their influences, then I'd seek out records by those bands.

Saw the Damned in 77. Dave Vanian left the stage and refused to come back until people stopped gobbing on him and throwning beer glasses at the stage... fun times!
The Damned have been my favorite band since 1986. I’m not old enough to have been there from the beginning. My parents bought me Final Damnation on VHS for Christmas 89 (I think) They were playing the Ibeam in San Francisco when I was still in high school and I could not go. Not old enough. It was 21+. Punk was not as fashionable as it would become 5 years later. Many of the bigger bands from the UK would play bars and 21+ venues when touring the US. As far as promoters were concerned the punk demographic was already aging. Those of us who were punk teenagers at the close of the 80’s represented a group to small to even market to. There’s a reason that even the bigger underground bands had stepped away from playing rudimentary, angry or abrasive rock and roll. Even the Damned had adjusted their sights and were aiming for an older (and more cash flush) bunch. Final Damnation itself was a nostalgia record/tour. The great thing about the Damned is that no matter the era they are among the most exiting and creative bands in the world. Even without the Captain they were pretty great. With Cap they are often the greatest rock and roll band period.
I say all of that to say this:

I was at the I-Beam show in SF. Unforgettable. I was in the front. Captain Sensible kept taking off items of clothing until he was buck naked. Then he spit into the crowd. I have never seen so much spit returned. The Capt. kept on playing with spit dangling from his arms. Disgusting. And awesome! I moved to the back. Great memory.

This was my childhood, at 9 years old my mum allowed me to bleach my hair blonde, I had my 9 hole doc Martin’s a New Rose T-shirt and a denim jacket with my badges and pins on..just how cool was my mum? Hahaha

I remember when my dad recorded this on Saturday night when he bought our first Panasonic VCR for $700 in June 1979 on a repeat episode of Supersonic after airing a new episode that night.

wow, never seen this, absolutely brilliant- sensible and vanian had such a presence, love the price tag on the guitar! loved the pistols and clash but did either of them ever record a song with such energy as this classic record(or new rose)
Saw them in Leeds 85 and oddly Sensible the following year in Wakey. Great days.

Thanks to my older brother going to college in Minneapolis/St Paul in 1978 I got to experience that punk scene with the Suburbs and the Suicide Commandos. The Damned was one of the albums I enjoyed totally and still to this day I play Stab Your Back in my head. Good times, no mini vans just station wagons.

It is basically 60's garage music recharged for the seventies. That to me is the irony of some "Punk" bands proclaiming that they are anti-sixties bands. This song is a cool song though.
Mansfield managed sensible later, his fascination with sensible clear with how his direction focuses on sensible all the time😢

@@daniel_1969 Not punk, sorry... they were American rockers, leather greasers....not punk.... they inspired punk, but Americans have been trying to steal it's origins for decades.
It is a London based musical and cultural movement that (thankfuly) the world has never recovered from, though they will keep trying to absorb it as their own to smother it.
It was 2 to 3 years, and it was an English cultural moment.
The rest is post punk, punk inspired, and punk fakes.
