My dad used to play this when I was a kid. He would put records on in his home office at weekends and I would dance for hours. He passed away last month and this song brings happy and sad tears. Such a memorable piece of music for such a memorable guy

I'll be 59 in a couple days and I still listen to this song now and then. It's brilliant. I love the production and arrangements on this version. When you listen to the original and other folksy covers of it, all the main parts are there, but this version really tightens up everything (including that meandering acoustic part that follows each chorus on all the other versions) and adds all kinds of really cool layers for dramatic effect. Easily one of the best covers ever! Love it.

I've never heard a cover of it I didn't love, though Chris Perez's version.... ehhhh
      Chief among them: Calexico probably
But this one is next level and in my mind outdoes the original.... the very moody picking and strumming is insane, like it brings back late 80s vibes very vividly, whether that's Miami Vice or that strange rock radio station that's hitting the sweet spot between AOR, pop & college, the kind of joint that would pair this up with Love & Rockets

@@xiropigado Yeah, with all due respect to the original, this cover may be one of the best of all time. I think the vocals are elevated in a way that is more debatable, a question of taste, but the guitar riff on the Damned version... I dunno man. It just takes me to a spiritual place. And the Love version is definitely very spiritual.

I just watched this video again after hearing someone on another video mention Arthur Lee/Love.
IT DID drive me to tears in euphoria!
The imagery and beautiful song, combined with remembering when it came out while I was in high school. Hearing it on KROQ in L.A. and seeing the video repeatedly on MTV,
Seeing the Damned LIVE soon after promoting this album.
It’s how I discovered The Damned.
I knew of The Sex Pistols and the Dead Kennedys and other early punk greats but not this amazing historic band, YET!
Turned out I’d heard some of their songs before but didn’t know it was them.
Still remember proudly wearing my prized Damned concert shirt I bought at the show, all during the rest of high school.
Had to retire it early so it wouldn’t melt away like memories do sometimes.
I still have it in a box of mid 80’s early 90’s concert shirts.
It’s obvious now why I get goosebumps hearing this song and tense up and sometimes tear up just before the trumpet solo.
This song has a direct line to my youth.
DAMN! over 30 years ago. 😢

The Damned remind us about something we tend to forget - punk rockers of the 70s did not grow up listening to punk, they were influenced by bands such as Love, and probably a lot of others that would have never spoke their name in the light of day for fear of being laughed at. Punk rockers at that time were awfully fascist in their attitudes about music. It's no surprise this came out in the late 80s, as opposed to the late 70s, when a lot of their fans would not have got it. Damned fine version Love it.
