I've been reliably informed that 'Bo Taoshi' does not mean 'pole fight' - more like 'pull the pole down'. Thank Trans World Sport for my bad translation.
And yes this is the theme of Taka Michinoku from the WWE.
As a commenter below wrote: "This is the most Japanese thing I've ever seen". He's not wrong!

In Japanese school,There are unique competitions in the annual sports festival. kibasen(Chicken fight) and kumi-taiso(gymnastic formation) are also popular competitions, but nowadays they are often banned for reasons of danger :'(

Oh yeah. Me and 299 of my Asian brethren decided to invent this shit one day because we got bored of maths and eating with chopsticks and stuff. Then we filmed this in an afternoon between building the great wall and making cheap electronics. And then I put it on UA-cam so that I can receive just 8,000 views. Seems legit.

Ninh Ly I'm a huge fan of your channel. I was on a binge and watched your videos on pesapollo, korfball, kabaddi, and then bo taoshi; and I was thinking "what strange sports we play". And I don't want you to think I was making some stupid racist joke about Asians when I said you used your friends to film game footage. I was trying to be funny (and failed), and I was curious how you find out about all these games. Anyway, you're doing great. All your videos are wonderful. 😉

(Hey, I’m 4 years late! 😀) The only instance of this game/sport I’ve found in anime is Assassination Classroom. Essentially, it’s played during a school sports festival and only junior high school third-years boys participate, so we’re talking 14-to-15-year-old boys. Many of the tactics and strategies used are definitely… radical and unorthodox, but it sure was fun to watch 🤩

You should do a series on popular ancient sports that aren't played today like gladiator sports in medieval times, etc. Also did Romans have animals fight against each other? I've always wondered who would win a fight between a gorilla and a grizzly bear. I'm guessing the romans would have such matches in the main events of fighting events

Back in my highschool we actually played this game as part of the student council election campaign. Ofcourse with a bit of modification here and there like instead of 300 we got like 50 defender and 50 attacker only (its an easy job to find 100 bored HS kids), or instead of a pole we replace it with the candidate trying to make his/her campaign speech asap before the attackers do a superman charge at them, etc. Its actually fun and one of the most anticipated school event, idk why it got banned by the new principal. 😑

this looks like the japanese version of the U.S naval academies herndon climb
for those of you who dont know what this is, its basically this:
the U.S naval academy has a obelisk shaped monument on campus that is 21 feet high and each year there is a tradition where the midshipmen at the academy place an pleb hat on top of the monument and then they cover the monument with vegetable grease and the 1st year attendees (whomst are known as plebes) most climb the monument and take the hat off the top and replace it with a officers hat. (there not allowed to wear shoes nor use anything but their bare hands and feet to climb) (note- they all are climbing and trying to get the hat off the monument at once)
