- A lot of people ask why the defenders hold hands. There's actually several reasons:
- To trap the raider by cutting off potential escape routes.
- To pull on their partner if they've been touched so that they know to tackle the raider.
- To form a chain to corral the raider out of position or into areas that they're not comfortable operating.
- To ensure their partner does not step out of bounds.
This is a great sport! There are a few different versions, as it turns out, all called kabaddi. This version is my favorite. Full-contact turbo tag.
Absolutely Dave! This version is quite nice to watch and is probably the more popular of the types of Kabaddi.
Hi Alexander. No, once a raider is finished, he retreats back (or is out) and then the other team send a raider of their own into the other half, as explained in the video.

Just so people aren't confused when watching one of the modern-day professional Kabaddi games, I would add that the chanting "Kabaddi" continuously rule isn't really enforced, but rather 30 seconds is given for each raid. Chanting while exhaling without inhaling was a way to time things back in olden times, but now that Timers and Stopwatches are a thing, the rule isn't really enforced.
In professional leagues like the Pro Kabaddi League, yes it's 30 seconds per raid.
But this game was invented in a time before stopwatches and quite a lot of teams still play whilst chanting Kabaddi, regardless of technology.

+vivek sharma I have watched Pro Kabaddi League, I have never seen that. Can you show some examples? In every video I have seen, I don't hear or see the mouths of the players chanting "Kabaddi".

@@NinhLyUK At first, I thought it was a joke but then ... yes, i must admit I was just totally wrong. it's a very attractive sport, the winner has to be in a fabulous shape and very clever. Thanks you for having explained some of the rules, I didn't get it just by watching some plays - the bonus line, "do-or-die" raid, etc. The fact that the players don't need anything but their shoes and a few lines on the floor makes it a very educational game. Sometimes I use videos of kabaddi to show my pupills that there is always something to discover in the world and that what they know is just a little piece of a very bigger thing - Ialso show them some plays of Tepak Sakraw. Do you know any other sports that are typical for south Asia and south east Asia ? It would help me making my lessons appear better. And I just hope that kabaddi will come some day into france, so I can watch it live !

I love seeing sports that don’t require much equipment, if any at all. It’s a breath of fresh air, when I think of how expensive popular American sports were to play when I was growing up.

Another such game is Kho-Kho. That is also fun to play. Just like traditional Kabaddi, kho-kho is also played directly on dirt ground. U just need to erect two sturdy poles on ground and draw out playing field with white powder. This is why these games has been so popular in every school of India esp in villages. Have been played for centuries both games dates back to Ancient India

That's what I thought when I saw the games but this videos actually confirms it. I find the sport very odd and weird to watch, it's like a game of tag that the players take so seriously lol, it's kind of funny. I don't think this sport is cool enough to be played in America at this level and especially on ESPN

It really should be an Olympic sport. This is a game where the equipment costs are practically nothing, and all you need is well-rounded athleticism: strong, fast, tough, and smart. Any country could be a competitive force here.
I've seen a match or two of this sport and believe me when I say it beats the NBA and MLB by miles in terms of entertainment.

Played a fair bit of this growing up. Less rules of course, and traditionally on mud surfaces.

I remember this being on tv in the UK in the 90s. Channel 4 I think. Was always a cool looking sport.
Incidentally, that's how I first started watching it. Saturday morning Kabaddi on Channel 4 ... those were the days!
That was _Transworld Sports_ I think.
Channel 4 was always the place for relatively unknown and sports which didn’t have a big following in the UK. That’s were American Football, sumo wrestling, Gaelic football, basketball and khabaddi got their first airing, although once they became popular Sky muscled them out. But at least they still have Trans World Sports, which is good for sports you wouldn’t normally see.
Pro Kabaddi League Season 8 is all set to start in October 2021, while the player auctions are to conduct on 29 to 31 August 2021. You can watch it live on Star Sports on TV and Hotstar(online streaming Platform).
Channel 4 in the UK used to televise Kabaddi matches. It's fun to watch. :)

I feel like as a child in the Philippines, we played a similar game called "Agawan Base" (Fight-for, or struggle for, bases - [Ilocano]) - this was in the northern part of the PH, and it was a schoolyard game.

Very Good. Also Iran is the closest rival to India in International tournaments ( both Men and Women).
They are, I think they and Pakistan are the closest rivals - but India still reigns supreme in this sport.
The ongoing Asian Games 2018 at Jakarta: the latest news is that in the Men's tournament Iran has beaten India in the Semis and will play against Korea in the Finals. India plays Pakistan for the bronze.
In the women,s tournament India beat Chinese Taipei in the semis and will play either Iran or Thailand in the Finals.

4:34 Personally I actually found the sport to be very intuitive. Some of the rules seem wonky, but I think that can probably be said of any gamified sport (i.e., balks in baseball, the definition of a catch in football, and so on)

This is one of those sports that I wish was popular in Canada. I always see the Indian guys at the park in my city with their uniforms but I never knew the rules.

When in school we used to play this in mud ground, barefoot, now it's synthetic surface, boy do I miss the distractions, taunts, banters, thigh slaps.. Kirr was another of our favourite sport..
I'm really trying to think about it, but I can't remember of any other sport like this one: Kabaddi is (at least I believe) the only team field sport that doesn't uses a ball... (someone please correct me if I'm wrong)

There are another sport named Kho Kho from India which is also very tactical and dont needs any kind of ball, actually there are 2-3 more games like this in India.

Questions:
1. Can the defenders tackle the raider even without the raider touching one of the defenders first?
2. Can the raider reach for the mid line with one of his/her limbs after he/she is tackled and pinned down on the floor?
3. Rules on stepping over lines. For examples:
Are there penalties for a defender who steps over the lobby or the back line to avoid being touched by the raider?
Are there penalties for a raider who steps over the lobby?
Are there penalties for a raider who steps over the mid line by accident? Does he forfeit his raiding turn or "dies and goes to the box" if he hasn't even touch the bulk line?
4. What is the clock that is ticking down from like 28 seconds? Is there a time limit on how long each raid can take?
Are there penalties if a raider doesn't return to the mid line in time?
5. You say the raider must touch "as many" defenders as he can. Does that imply he can score multiple points in a raid by touching multiple defenders plus maybe stepping over the bonus line when there are enough people?
6. If a raider can score multiple points by touching multiple defenders, then what if multiple defenders tackle the raider and he still makes it back to the mid line? Does that count as multiple touches? Can you lose multiple defenders in one raid?
7. There must be some rules on what you cannot physically do to opposing players. Can you give some examples on some common illegal moves?

1) Yes.
2) Yes.
3) a) Defenders must stay within the area of play until one of them has been touched. If one has been touched, they are allowed to force the raider out and therefore leave the area of play. b) Raider must be in the area of play at all times. Any infraction of these rules and the offending player is out. c) Once a defender crosses the midline, he is a raider and will be treated as such. If he then steps back into his own half, the raid is over.
4) In some Pro Kabaddi tournaments, they don't require players to chant Kabaddi, they just time 30 seconds instead.
5) Yes, exactly that.
6) Yes, this counts as multiple touches and you can lose multiple defenders - especially if they try and tackle the raider and he goes over the midline.
7) There are, most of them include not striking with the fist or head, no pulling of hair or clothes, no biting, eye gouging, fish hooking all the dirty stuff. But other than that, it's kinda like rugby tackling.

There is a raider called Pardeep Narwal who scored 8 points in a single raide that includes 6 touch points + 2 all out points. He is currently the king of pro kabaddi and called as record - breaker

I'd always wondered if you had done a video on this sport. The first mention I found of Kabaddi was in one of the "Schott's Miscellany" books.
I did a few years ago, it got taken down by Star Sports. I initially fought this and lost.
I've remade it with some newer footage, but I have a sneaky suspicion that Star Sports might claim this again.
We'll have to wait and see.

The Burning Kabaddi Anime's first looked like a basketball anime to me then I as I looked at it closer and read the description, I realized that I was wrong HAHAHAHA. Lesson learned: Don't judge based on looks specially if the object is seen from afar.

I'm sure many places around the world have a similar schoolyard game with this logic. We had this game where two teams split up, hold hands and form a line each, demand one person from the other as the "raider" during their turn. The raider would run towards the other team, trying to force his/her way through the human chain formed across the field, if s/he wins, they'd get one player for their team, if loses, joins the other. Of course the resemblance is only superficial, but I remembered those memories immediately upon seeing this video.

This is a good Sport! You don't need any equipment, really. I am very surprised it is not played anywhere else. Lots of little boys would enjoy this sport very much, and at the same time it is a very fun spectator sport to watch when it is played at the adult level.

Eduardo Jimenez holding hands enables them to form a net of sort in which they can better nab the raider. Otherwise, there is a risk of raider escaping through cracks if defenders are not holding hands

As well as 'Shri Kesari's comment, it also enables defenders to pull on their partner know they've been touched, so that they can help bring them down before they get back to the mid-line. Hope that helps?

Let's say a raider touches an anti and goes back to the center line. However, he gets tackled by other anti's in the process, but is successful in reaching the centerline, every anti that touched him during the tackle is also out?
That is correct yes.
So anti's have to be real careful in choosing to tackle a raider - because if they try and fail and the raider makes it back over the mid-line, everyone who touched him is out.

I don't see how this is more complicated than any other sports, the scoring and the gameplay system is really simple. I mean I get confused more with golf scoring system.
