Texts:
I. Illuminare
Per viscera misericordiae
Dei nostri
in quibus visitavit
nos oriens ex alto
illuminare his qui in tenebris
et in umbra mortis sedent
ad dirigendos pedes nostros
in viam pacis.
Lux ex alto,
veni nos illuminare.
(By the mercy of our God
the dawn from on high
will break upon us,
to give light to those
who sit in darkness
and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet
into the way of peace.
Light from on high,
come illumine us.)
(based on Luke 1:78-79)
Lux de luce apparuisti Christe,
cui Magi munera offerunt,
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
(You appeared as Light from light,
O Christ, to whom
the Magi offered gifts,
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.)
(Antiphon for Epiphany, 14th c.)
II. Lux in Tenebris
Lux fulgebit hodie super nos,
quia natus est nobis Dominus.
(A light will shine on us today,
for the Lord is born unto us.)
(Introit for Christmas Dawn, 10th c.)
Lux in tenebris lucet
et tenebrae eam non superaverunt.
(The light shines in darkness;
and the darkness has not overcome it.)
(John 1:5)
III. The Sun Never Says
Even
After
All this time
The sun never says to the earth,
"You owe
Me."
Look
What happens
With a love like that,
It lights the
Whole
Sky.
(Daniel Ladinsky, from "The Gift",
©1999, used by permission)
IV. Gloria in excelsis
Gloria in excelsis Deo,
et in terra pax.
(Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth, peace.) (from Luke 2:14)
V. Creator of the Stars of Night
Creator of the stars of night,
Thy people's everlasting Light,
O Christ, Thou Savior of us all,
now hear Thy servants when they call.
Creator alme siderum
aeterna lux credentium
Christe redemptor omnium
exaudi voces supplicum.
O Blest Creator of the light,
Who made the day with radiance bright,
and o'er the newborn world did call
the light from darkness first of all.
(Optional Advent/Christmas Text)
(When the whole world drew on toward night,
Thou camest, not in splendor bright
as sovereign, but the humble Child
of Mary, virgin mother mild.)
To God the Father, God the Son,
and God the Spirit, Three in One,
laud, honor, might, and glory be
from age to age eternally. Amen.
(7th c. chant, various translations)

encore une oeuvre magnifique de dan, qui nous transporte dans le monde des spheres et de la perfection, qui nous eleve, nous purifie de la corruption, la folie et la degenerescence de ce monde materiel, et nous delivre du mal !
And GOD said let there be light, and there was light, this music dispels the darkness, thank you.
All of your music SHINES, and I literally cannot express how excited I am to perform this masterpiece at Carnegie Hall in 8 months!!
Just discovered this marvelous piece! What an incredible work of art!
watched this today live. it was awesome
Sublime! Stunning !
Thanks, Mr. Forrest, for another inspiring, gorgeous musical appreciation of our God and our lives in His service. Thank you so much!
Undescribable.
Holy, immaculate, beautiful, and perfect: LUX. YOU HAVE ENLIGHTED ME.
Amazing! Exquisitely beautiful.
The power of music brings voice to the sacred and expresses sound to creation. A very moving performance.
Wonderful! Another masterpiece of Dan Forrest! Greetings from Austria 🌸
Just awesome, inspiring music.
privileged to experience Lux this morning at Gary United Methodist in Wheaton, IL. Exquisite! and so moving.
Stunningly beautiful.
God bless you immensely Mr Forrest
Just wonderful. The string arrangements are special.
Just watched this at the King Center for performing Arts, in Melbourne, FL with the Brevard Community Chorus - It was phenomenal! Mystical music... Concert was on December 8, 2018
we have to do this for my high school choir. It’s nice but such a pain
It's the challenge that makes it worthy of the effort. At least here, you can hear what it is you are striving to achieve.
If you have not yet attended a performance of this majestic tribute, it will be performed this week on June 23 by the Rivertree Singers under the direction of Warren Cook at Rodeheaver Auditorium on Bob Jones University Campus at 7:30 pm.
I don't think the 'comments' should be used for advertising other performances. But then, this music is so beautiful awareness of it needs to be spread as widely as possible. And that being said, for me the Rivertree performance (now in the past when I write this) is superior in the feel it achieves for the work. The performance here while perhaps having a slightly more 'professional' quality to its sound, is excellent but somehow too formal, too precious, is the closest I can come to expressing the difference. Both are great realisations of Forrest's wonderful music.
The next performance of Dan Forrest's Lux will be by the Haywood Community Chorus, directed by Kathy Geyer McNeil, Sunday May 6th, 4 PM at the Waynesville First United Methodist Church, downtown Waynesville, NC.
Actually, the next performance is this Wednesday, March 28th, at 7:30 pm at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Fredonia, New York, by the Masterwork Choir at Trinity. Admission is free, with optional donation to the church! We will be performing the Chamber version of Lux!
Tomorrow evening (June 3, 2018) we are performing the Virginia premier at Richmond's First Baptist Church.
Heavenly
Dear Dan Forrest, we gone start the rearsals tomorrow! See you in June, at London!
The Athens Master Chorale will perform this beautiful masterpiece this Saturday, May 18, 2019, at 7:30 pm in Hodgson Hall on the campus of the University of Georgia.
The next performance of this gorgeous piece is this Wednesday, March 28th, at 7:30 pm at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Fredonia, New York, by the Masterwork Choir at Trinity. Admission is free, with optional donation to the church! We will be performing the Chamber version of Lux!
Who did your videography? Lovely tapestry of sound and sight.
Insight Productions- Jonathan Shuler. See credits at 40:19.
Titling is a shade pretentious, particularly the almost unreadable font used for identifying the movements.
Has Dan ever done a part for an Alto Soloist?
Yes, I know of at least one -- Jubilate Deo's Second Movement, Ve adthdor vador (From age to age). ua-cam.com/video/BVyCzNg6o0o/v-deo.html
Awesome, for sure. But I couldn't help noticing the poor black woman on the front row (2:59 - 4th from the left). They showed a close-up of her only once and I guess the reason is that. There was something wrong with her. I hope and pray that she is okay.
She just looked a little lost. It happens to all musicians once in a while.
Who are the soloists?
Description edited to include soloists: Kathryn Knauer, soprano Paul Sewell, tenor
