I. Illuminare
Per viscera misericordiae
Dei nostri
in quibus visitavit
nos oriens ex alto
illuminare his qui in tenebris
et in umbra mortis sedent
ad dirigendos pedes nostros
in viam pacis.
Lux ex alto,
veni nos illuminare.
(By the mercy of our God
the dawn from on high
will break upon us,
to give light to those
who sit in darkness
and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet
into the way of peace.
Light from on high,
come illumine us.)
(based on Luke 1:78-79)
Lux de luce apparuisti Christe,
cui Magi munera offerunt,
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
(You appeared as Light from light,
O Christ, to whom
the Magi offered gifts,
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.)
(Antiphon for Epiphany, 14th c.)
II. Lux in Tenebris
Lux fulgebit hodie super nos,
quia natus est nobis Dominus.
(A light will shine on us today,
for the Lord is born unto us.)
(Introit for Christmas Dawn, 10th c.)
Lux in tenebris lucet
et tenebrae eam non superaverunt.
(The light shines in darkness;
and the darkness has not overcome it.)
(John 1:5)
III. The Sun Never Says
Even
After
All this time
The sun never says to the earth,
"You owe
Me."
Look
What happens
With a love like that,
It lights the
Whole
Sky.
(Daniel Ladinsky, from "The Gift",
©1999, used by permission)
IV. Gloria in Excelsis
Gloria in excelsis Deo,
et in terra pax.
(Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth, peace.) (from Luke 2:14)
V. Creator of the Stars of Night
Creator of the stars of night,
Thy people's everlasting Light,
O Christ, Thou Savior of us all,
now hear Thy servants when they call.
Creator alme siderum
aeterna lux credentium
Christe redemptor omnium
exaudi voces supplicum.
O Blest Creator of the light,
Who made the day with radiance bright,
and o'er the newborn world did call
the light from darkness first of all.
(Optional Advent/Christmas Text)
(When the whole world drew on toward night,
Thou camest, not in splendor bright
as sovereign, but the humble Child
of Mary, virgin mother mild.)
To God the Father, God the Son,
and God the Spirit, Three in One,
laud, honor, might, and glory be
from age to age eternally. Amen.
(7th c. chant, various translations)
(... It lights the Whole Sky ...)

Ein wahnsinniges schönes Werk. Dem Komponisten kann man nur weiterhin viel Erfolg wünschen.Habe es schon einmal live gehört. Man wird süchtig nach dieser Musik. ❤
wow
for once since everything got cancelled, I was actually able to sing through "The Sun Never Says" without crying.
but I may have spoken too soon cause I feel like I'm about to cry.
My daughter’s choir performed this piece tonight at Syracuse University. I live far so I watched the livestream. Apparently Dan Forest was listening as well! I fell in love with this piece. It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. I had to come find him in action. Not disappointed! Wow!!!
Touched and moved by this masterpiece of Dan Forrest, masterfully performed by the sublime The Rivertree Singers and orchestra.
2021.... Just found this and I am in awe!!!
Me To !!!!☺
This is the wonderful side of UA-cam, finding unexpected gifts such as this group. The choir is so in tune with each other and the orchestra . I now have a new favorite. This is such an inspiration while staying at home during covid-19. Thank you for an outstanding performance.
pro tip : you can watch movies on flixzone. I've been using it for watching a lot of movies recently.
@Ty Darwin Definitely, been using flixzone} for since november myself :D
Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuüu
If for this piece alone, Dan Forrest has cemented his place as the greatest sacred choral composer alive, and among the ranks of the greatest composers to have ever lived. A glorious blend of talent and skill. Solo Dei Gloria!
I have listened to this multiple times. I find myself over and over again contemplating the underlying scripture and message being conveyed. Jesus is the Light of the World. All of our sins are extinguished by his holiness. Eternal life; a gift of love. Praise to God.
The performance is wonderful. Contemplative shading at the appropriate points with crescendo's of praise. Thank You to all involved.
Ever since Requiem For the Living I have loved your performances. You are incredible.
I'm in a school choir and we are going to perform this whole score! Stone High School Mississippi!
I am taken by the musicians as well as the singers. What a dedicated and talented orchestra. How does Rivertree find such people to perform so flawlessly with so little practice. Flawless performance after which everyone goes home and gets ready for work and taking care of babies.
Rivertree singers as always delivers the best! And Dan Forrest? He is such a blessed and talented soul. Great work and well done
Absolutely tear-jerking performance
This brings hope for all of us during these current times.
Amen Somebody !!
I am glad this style of music is coming back . That is angels voices . This is the kind of music that suits the soul , and it's a blessing to still have composers , arrangers and mach-boxes this our rap music days to let the world know what music is all about . Thank you very much .
My church, Birmingham First United Methodist Church in Birmingham, MI performed this twice in 2019. It has become one of my most favorite pieces of music. I am so grateful for this performance being recorded so I can listen to it again and again!
Pure Soul touching 😘🙏♥️
Sounds like a theme song..especially the lux- in-tenebris staccato effect. Waiting for the perfect movie to come along.
A stunningly relaxed, expansive, and accurate performance of this wonderful piece, especially considering the complexity of performing with such a large group! It is indeed appropriate to have so many involved, however, since the full majesty of the subject matter is intensified.
Gotta love UA-cam! It is so worthwhile to experience the contrast between this large enterprise and the Salt lake Choral Artists more intimate chamber version. Each one has its strengths.
Wonderful. What a wonderful piece.
God has blessed all of you with talent and you bless the people who hear it.
This is a go to favorite of our family! Always a special treat to show this to our toddler and baby. ❤️
Beautiful music. Brilliant performance. I'm impressed. The composer is genius. And I can't imagine a more perfect performance of this music.
Magnificent. The camera work and editing are as beautiful as the music. Thank you.
Amazing work, Dan Forrest! I especially appreciated the gorgeous, yet sensitive string writing. Another masterpiece! Also a stunning performance by the RiverTree Singers, I can always count on your group to produce a high-quality recording!
My score for this just arrived!! :) :) :) Soooooo happy!!
I sing with the Salt Lake Choral Artists and we're preparing this piece for our upcoming Christmas concert. I find it wonderful to sing. I love the dissonance that happens more often later in the work.
Dan, you are from this Area?
YOU are definitely a 🌠 you really are! Thank you & the Amazing Rivertreesingers & Friends

Quem for do Coro Sinfônico IC da um UP aqui!
Oh how I wish I was in that orchestra...
A majestyc play Luke that..." it light the whole sky" Congrats, Rivertree and Dan Forrest!
Quelle merveille! Merci à vous
This is hauntingly beautiful. Great job!
YES !!!☺
Magnificent Christmas music. Isaiah 9:2 is a theme verse for Providence Downtown Church in Idaho Falls. Lux in Tenebris (John 1:5) was the theme for Old Faithful Christian Ranch (based in Island Park, Idaho) in 2020. Gloria in Excelsis is my preaching text for this Sunday in Eastern Idaho. Thank you, Dan; and thank you to all these singers and musicians. God is light.
Que bello!!!
A magnificent experience that l needed after the death of my partner Mark of 27 years. I am forever grateful to these fine musicians, my spirit is lifted by the voices and instruments, Aleluyia and Amen !!! ☺
What a beautiful and poignant testimony Rodney. Sending you a thousand virtual hugs!
absolument magnifique une merveille
OMG
Reading Beowulf while listening. Highly recommend.

Loved this. Really good to hear the Soloists Nikki and Jason again plus also a shout out the the Cello 1 to the conductors right. I found myself listening for his playing. Who was this?
close call between this and his jubilate deo. this has the excellent tenor and drummer The Winner

As a choir member this piece is not very exciting to sing. However, this performance made me appreciate its placid beauty.
I feel like this work is mostly about color and texture than it is about the choir, so I see what you mean. Portions of the work is based on chant, so there won't be much movement. I also think that the orchestra is highlighted here and does a wonderful job. The choir is almost back-up singers.
so true
It's kind of a drag to practice for on your own... but once everything is put together? No longer boring, even as a singer in my opinion. The dissonance and color come together so beautifully. I'm going to be performing this soon, but there wasn't enough participation so we ended up combining with another group and cutting movements II and V for Schubert Mass in G, I'm so sad about it.
where is the cadence?? I don't hear it not even at the end?
really and truly cannot hear the winds at all! (especially woodwinds). IS this a scoring problem or an acoustics problem, or what? (nothing to do with the players!)
Excellent performance by the choir and orchestra but the choir score was less than engaging. I was disappointed as I have normally enjoyed Dan Forrest's pieces. The ending was very anti-climatic. My wife and I both said, "Is that it?"
Since I was one of the singers to fly 2000 miles to sing this performance, and know the intricacies of the execution, until you understand the difficulty level you should keep your criticisms to yourself. The perfect blending of constant sound is difficult to achieve, and I was especially proud of how well an international group of seasoned singers could pull this off in a short period of time. Besides, the only audience that mattered was God. I felt He was pleased.
@@janschiebout7955 Correct, sing in worship to God. He is always pleased with that
