    It is absolutely stunning! I am from South Carolina and familiar with the family story. I would like to pass some history on to you. The furniture is exquisite. I know where this house is located but it is very common in South Carolina for some of the plantation homes in around the State Capital to be used a very nice offices of prominent lawyers, politicians basically the upper crust in business professionals as the leases are extremely expensive and they are all near the legal and judicial buildings for the state. It is a lovely video. I love this time period for many reasons, the elegance, class, work, quality and lifestyle that was led. I am partial to my air conditioning and I know life was not easy during that era but I still find the obstacles and grace that they managed to live through these things is absolutely amazing and humbling. Thank you for this lovely video. Take care, stay safe and God bless! xo 💞 Kat

    My Mom's house was built in 1904. She is an interior designer. You have to WANT to live in a house that is very large like 4,500sq ft and be ready for maintenance or maintenance problems get out of hand fast.

      I agree 110%. That is why we moved out of ours and sold it. Just taking care of the wood all the time really sucked. I actually loved the look. My wife however prefers the cleaner look of modern decorating . More light earth tones and even the wood flooring has to be medium walnut at best.
      This is why I traded my wife for a good mule. It got rid of her and with the mule I was able to pull up all the flooring at once.
      Hey if my wife shows up here. Tell her I was only joking. I know she is worth at least 4 mules 😎🙃
      But seriously the old place is long gone and yes my wife is still around. Only because I know no one who sells mules. Good thing she has a sense of humor. I would hate to wake up with a cast iron pan fitted to my ugly mug.

      My husband and I live in a 100 year old house. What you wrote is true. I'm physically stronger than I used to be simply due to keeping up with the house. It's sooo demanding and seems to have been a life of its own. We've been at odds. So much is just manual labor. I can see why people with larger homes had servants. I'd like a maid, cook and gardener.

      @@Patriot-rising You wrote my nightmare. Very old house, all original wood floors, wood siding, moulding, casement windows, baseboards, built-ins... ALL ORIGINAL. There is so, so, so much work involved. We inherited and can't leave because we're keeping it in the family. Getting ready to wallpaper ($350 per roll 118"x187")... Heating and A/C are killing us. Rooms closed off for utility expenses. Moving plants around here, there, everywhere due to temperature variations by seasons. Burning wood to save $). Lie awake at night and make plans. That's my falling asleep ritual.

      A well built home you aren’t going to encounter many maintenance issues for a decade or more. In old homes a 1200 square foot home could have three times the issues as a 6000 square foot home. That’s just old homes for you.

    FYI in the 1800s and early 1900s it was very common for furniture makers to build caskets. They always had wood and knew how to build stuff.
    Loved all the stained glass and woodwork. Especially the fireplaces. Hope someone will take it over and preserve it.

    Wow! I found myself saying "oh my god" (out loud) as we approached another room. So unbelievable to see the original tiles and fireplace screens still intact. The stained glass window was beautiful. The wood work is amazing. If i had to guess I would think that tiled room was originally the kitchen. They probably re worked that room when the offices were in use, which is just tragic mostly because that space is just about the ugliest thing I've ever seen! This house seems like with a little work it could be restored to it's original glory. Hopefully, someone will rescue her from mother nature before she rots. I can't believe it's abandoned, Just WOW!

  • @breadladyuga

    It’s amazing that all those valuable antiques are still there.
    I doubt the rug you admired is of the Victorian era. It is most likely something one of the businesses using it brought in. The weird purplish couch that you thought might be a psychologist’s couch is actually called a fainting couch (for when women wore corsets and because of that became short of breath) or a chaise lounge.
    The inside of this house with its huge spaces, beautiful floors, remaining built in features and antique furniture is much more impressive than the outside IMHO.
    I pray it can be saved!
    Perhaps someone could purchase it and move it to a more desirable location to save it from destruction. 🙏🏻

    • @trudygreer2491
      @trudygreer2491 Рік тому +4

      The "drain room" could very well have been the original kitchen, but the current state is definitely not original. Many houses of the South had kitchens in an outbuilding or basement (a dumbwaiter would have indicated a basement kitchen). I have to disagree with the other commenter on floor drains in Victorian kitchens: indoor plumbing, where it existed, was not that sophisticated. That room in its current state has been updated and the floor drain is most likely a concession to modern codes.

    Back in those days they used to use the lower level for entertaining and eating the upper level of the home was used for living that's why it's so much larger and the tiled room that you are wondering about on the main level with all the outlets that was probably the mudroom (the outlets probably came later in time) if that door led to the outside where they would come in and take off their dirty things or it could even have been used as a washroom for laundry and other things

    Hey BB, great find!!!! Craftsmanship details beyond what dreams are made of. About the dining room set, I believe it is Japanese, I'm not a fan of that look, but your right, it is expensive and plenty of wealthy people displayed Japanese furniture, dishes, and artwork to show that they had money. Some of that is extremely valuable. Most of the furniture, light fixtures, and those beautiful fireplaces are priceless!!! Very BEAUTIFUL!!!

    • @Patriot-rising
      @Patriot-rising Рік тому +3

      It is actually not Japanese. These were made in Thailand or Vietnam. The furniture was actually very cheap when it was created back in the late 60's early 70's . A lot of military personnel shipped this stuff back home because their shipping charges were quite low and for the price they paid for the furniture made it such a great deal to ship back to their sweethearts.
      This furniture looks good but is not the best when it came to the inlays. They often came out of the wood. Funny thing is these were actually designed and produced for foreigners. The Asians never really cared for all of that stuff.
      It today is worth something. Like I said up above around $ 8,000 to 12,000 which is being overly generous. The ones they are looking at have various issues I can see and that probably means quite a bit more that is hidden. The wood they used so often dented so easily. The set you see in the house would probably get to about $3500.00 max due to the condition. But you are 100% correct. The Asian influence carried from the later part of the 60's right up to about the mid 80's. To me it is very ugly stuff. It all boils down to personal tastes.

    I'm absolutely amazed nobody destroyed that beautiful Edison C-19 (possibly a C-250) phonograph. It's stunning the woodwork is still in tact (and not graffitied nor stolen). I've always wanted to live in a Victorian home, but after reading several comments about the struggles and difficulties they are to maintain), I may be thankful years down the road that I never bought a money pit. The therapist type of couch is called a chaise lounge (shayz lawng). It's been around since ancient Egypt. Picture an ancient Egyptian sitting on one being fanned by their servants. The Greeks and Romans used it for reclining at the table while they ate.
    It really became a thing from the 16th century to the late 19th century. Women found it easier and more comfortable to nap on one during the day because of the tight corsets they wore. Sometimes they were cinched so tight they would shift the ribs and organs out of place in the pursuit of beauty with the tiniest of waist. But men enjoyed it as well for reading and napping.
    There are a whole host of explanations for the shape of that chair but those are the more popular ones.

    My grandfathers Victorian home had hallways on the second floor that were even larger. They had huge wardrobes that held linens for the bedrooms and bathrooms. There were also beautiful setees along the walls. Pink isn’t just used for bedrooms. In the past it was most used in other rooms. There are many pink rooms in Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace. It was a common color for living rooms. It seems to be the United States that has relegated pink to girls rooms.

They usually get torn down because of people mistreating those places, or they are heavily secured. All I wanna do is take pictures and make videos like this. How do you do all of this without getting in trouble? Also, have you been to Pennsylvania for abandoned places? If so, where did you go to?

    You never went in the basement. That's what makes or breaks a large house. Love seeing foundations and the house's infrastructure. Might give you an idea why it's abandoned.

      Yeah. And the attic. Missing the attic is a crime. That's where all the goodies from a century ago are usually stored.

      Please tell me where this house is. I suspect it is in south Carolina but that is just a guess. My husband and I would love to restore it ( truly I do not think it needs much restoration but having not been in it I don't know if that is accurate or not ). Sincerely, Lynette Tillman

    I really hope that someone can buy this place. I love the Victorian furniture. But most of all I loved the woodwork of the rooms. As others have said I wish that I could buy it. What a great deal. The Chinese furniture is pretty cool too.

    I used to live in Bristol, Ct. and the Victorian homes were just amazing. Streets and streets of them! Each one so unique in its own right -stunning architecture. Many had been converted into multi family dwellings. I loved walking the neighborhoods and imagining living in one of those gems. But the area was economically depressed. Whatever Bristol was back in its hey day the sheen had worn off. I loved the history of the area but always felt a little sad that it was no longer the thriving place it used to be. That’s how I see this home. The area surrounding it looks run down,he even mentioned increasing crime rates. This house is worn and tired. It could be restored but I wonder if the city it is in can be restored too.

    Back in the day, that would have been an indoor laundry room for a wringer washing machine. The drain hose would hook onto the side of the machine, and when drained for the rinse cycle the water would be drained out into that drain hole..quite fancy
