There was a house a few years ago in your area that I wanted to buy and fix for my own but I couldn't get anyone to realize the beauty I could see in it. I'm heart broken and still think about it.
I understand what you feel. Some of us connect with history a lot, on a personal level. I had a house similar in the belle Grove historic district of fort Smith, Arkansas.

Wow! So many perfect touches, just exquisite! I could watch this over and over and still see something I missed before. I can only imagine the thrill of finding the hidden ceilings and pocket doors in the garage! I loved how light and airy every room felt because of your color palette, with painted floors , subway tile , reclaimed kitchen sink and mantel pieces. The breeze way of the hall with the beautifull light of color coming from the back door was stunning. Everything object meticulously and perfectly matched with artwork, to treasures of collections blending to a sublime presence. Total elegance! I Loved it all.
My in-laws bought a ramshackled historic home from the 1700's with 3 lots and a huge barn.. It had squirrels living in the oven, pool was overgrown, it was horrible. They paid over 300k in the early 80's, which was a lot. They redid the whole home. Eight bedrooms, 7 fireplaces, but no bathrooms because people used outhouses back then, but they had bathrooms put in. They did such a beautiful job that it was in House Beautiful magazine. Much of the work they did themselves but hired contractors to do electrical, plumbing and install bathrooms. It even had a door in the side of the parlor to move a casket in, years ago people had viewings in their homes. They refinished the original wood floors which were large planks with wood pegs instead of nails, it was fantastic. It ended up being a gorgeous Victorian home. They wanted to open it up as a B&B but it wasn't the right area.
That's sounds spectacular and must have been a monumental job. Glad to hear others love restoring the past. The special door for family caskets...imagine the reality of the time and we think we have a tough life.

With so much of the house in advanced decay, that gave you license to use your own creative skills. Victorian can play nicely with Craftsman, and your kitchen manages to be 21st-century in an unobtrusive way. Even if the woodwork had originally been unpainted, so much was unrestorable that painting would be the only way for consistency anyway. If the first occupants could come back and look at your home, I think they would approve.

My family was raised in a 1837 brick gothic revival! Very historic town. The largest historical small town on the historic register. Marshall Michigan. So proud of our historic community. Love you’re restoration renovations! Properties are for current residents to preserve the past!
My husband and I purchased a 1900 Victorian house in the south, the interior renovation is very close to completion; however, the exterior (except roof repairs & windows) has not been touched as of yet. We were able to save the original stairs (they are beautiful), most floors, doors, baseboards and trims. We left the pocket doors inside the walls but can easily be retrieve by removing the trim we installed to cover the side openings. Now that I see yours I’m thinking about getting them back 😊. We are adding another bedroom with a full bathroom in the attic for my daughter because she loves that space, it’s big and has natural lighting. I love my over 4,000 sq. ft. Victorian home, these houses are a treasure. Trying not to bring too much inside but I truly enjoy my house, specially the high ceilings and wrap around porch!!! The purchase price was a steal.

I first want to commend you for taking on this project, as the house was really left to rot and fall into disrepair. But you saw it for the historic gem that it is and you have restored it so beautifully, the soft blue is gorgeous and the antiques placed about add interest. I love when people preserve and rescue these beautiful old homes with all of their architectural charm and historic relevance.

The clock! If you would like it to run, without scaring the dogs - just take off the (left) weight, that runs the chime! It will run fine without, and be a heartbeat of the home 🙂 Alternatively, stick a little piece of felt on the bell, where the hammer strikes it. Same goes for all clocks with weights, and if you have a clock, that is key wound, then just only wind up the right side (usually) 🙂
I just love old clocks, and I think every home should have a heartbeat, the constant, steady tick-tock of a big, old clock 🙂 I know, I feel like something is wrong, if my clocks don't run 😂 Yours looks like a beautiful, french comtoise clock 🙂
There is a gorgeous Victorian in a small town ( not revealing the state because i want it and I know people would go looking to snap it up) it looks like a horrid crumbling horror movie set from the outside, buy the inside is beyond gorgeous. Lots of original wood, fixtures, and even some remaining wallpaper. Its been on and off the market since 2014, so I'm hoping I have a chance to get it . I still have to save up , but I think it would be beyond amazing when fully restored. And it won't be too hard to do! Most of the work is already done! Though I will have to strip paint off of the original wood panels, * shudders* such gorgeous natural wood, and they painted it white! ( the photos show it halfway done)
Go ahead and talk a mortgage lender to get approved. My husband and I bought our dream house last fall and are having a ball restoring it. Contact the latest realtor to see if you can get in to see it. I bet you can get it easier than you think. We didn’t have to come up with near as much as we thought we would. Good luck 🍀

That house ended up selling just a few weeks ago, my problem is that my husband and I are both unemployed due to covid, so no mortgage lender even gives us a second glance. But it's OK, we moved back to California last week, moved in with friends. So now I should be able to find a job easier. Then we can save up more and get a place. Our plan is to save up enough over this next year to either buy a place outright or put enough down on it that we can pay it off in a year or two. Luckily the houses we like don't tend to be very expensive. Anywhere from 30,000 to 200,000. Admittedly, the higher prices would take us longer to pay off, even when paying extra each month, probably 5 to 8 years, with me working 72 hours a week.
Uuuugh! so sorry about the pocket doors! I couldn't imagine taking something so stunning and resorting them to putting oil cans on. They are by far the stunner of Victorian dining rooms ( aside from the stained glass) .
There is so much about this house I love. The blue kitchen. The blue exterior. The brightness. The attention to detail for period refurbishing. The two rocking chairs on that inviting verandah. You have create a beautiful oasis. A harbour of tranquillity and peace from the chaos of restoring old homes. Well done.
the previous owners maybe tried making the place into a duplex and that would account for the enclosed staircase? i noticed that a lot of ppl will buy old homes and make them into double rentals.
I agree. They tend to close them to keep the upstairs and downstairs from being able to access one another and would had put an entrance to second floor outside somewhere. Then duplexes are born
What an absolutely stunning home. Unfortunately my husband and I are not in a position to save the 1928 house on our ranch. If we had started about 30 years ago it might have been doable but sadly it is even farther gone than your lovely Scotty. Congratulations on a job beautifully done.

Your rescue dog in your arms is a replica of my Harley. He is 13 now and had a seizure this past Christmas. I gave him a low dose aspirin 3 days in a row and he seems to be back to his springy self. We know to value each day we have with him now.
I’ve always preferred to live in an older home, actually the older the better. My happiest memories seem to have been while I was living in an old house, but unfortunately I didn’t live in one with such style and age as yours. The next best thing for me is going to be building a Victorian mansion dollhouse. I plan to attempt making the moldings, fireplaces, and other features a very close likeness to houses I’ve seen online.

Your home is stunning. Love your bedroom and bathroom. You have done what we do in the UK with your kitchen. It is a home not a museum and like you I have all the modern conveniences but our units are the more traditional shaker style which are painted a light grey. Our last home had a blue kitchen which was lovingly restored by my husband using Farrow and Ball eggshell paint. You must be so proud of what you have achieved. Can't understand why people live in new homes when they could live in period gems. We get that in the UK.
Wonderful home, it shows the restoration beautifully. I really like the kitchen sink you salvaged from the trash pile! I’ve been keeping my eyes open for one like that for the last 20 years, only ones I’ve found have been in use or not for sale.
I have one of those beautiful sinks in my house. It’s the original sink and the house was built in 1907 I believe. It’s so cool and I flipped out when I saw it. I hope you find one!!!
Beautiful. Reminds of our first house we bought. Similar looking built in 1914. We miss that house. We looked at recently buying it back when it came up for sale. However the owners who bought it from us had removed the fireplaces and changed the roof line, took all the charm and originality from the home. I often get amazed how many people will buy these old homes and then change all the things that make it warm, charming and cozy. You did a great job keeping the charm alive in this home.
My house has low ceilings in some areas and I would definitely not change it. My electrical bill is always low (with solar it’s actually non existent). I’ll take the lower ceilings in exchange for the comfort of having my air on when it’s hot and my heat when it’s cold and not worrying about it. I used to live in a home with 14 ft ceilings and my electrical bill was crazy high yet it seemed my house was always too cold in winter and too hot in summer
I love the light 'cottage-y' feel of your home. As you have pointed out in your tour videos, Victorian houses vary so much. Here in San Diego we have very few of the Richardson Romanesque or brick Victorians; mostly wooden Queen Annes with colorful paint schemes. Sadly, many of the largest mansions were in what became a very bad neighborhood east of Downtown and have been lost. There are plenty of small cottages, though, mixed in with the Spanish style and Craftsman bungalows. Every time I spot one that reflects the love of the owner, I smile. Unfortunately these old homes were not usually insulated and I'd they were it was with old newspaper....which fall down the wall and get demolished by mice and bugs. So what was common was to close off anything unnecessary/not used and to drop tall ceilings to make it easier to heat...especially when money was an issue! This happened a lot when in the 70s fuel cost went stupid! A lot of places didn't know about pest control (which I'm not even sure when that started, 60-70s? Idk I do know my step dad was doing it in the 80s) or were too poor to pay for it. Sadly, my grandmothers house, that was ca. 1880s, my aunt tore down to put up a double wide! Yes....I hear every one of you gasp in horror!! So did I when I found out. I miss that old house. The kitchen was at the back...where it use to be detached from the main house. They had a covered breeze way from the kitchen that went from kitchen to main house. They enclosed that and widened it making a bed room and a bathroom (cast iron tub) a hallway and coat closet. They also added onto the side of the kitchen and made a wash room. My grandfather was a blaster. He would use dynamite to blast tree stumps from ground that was being cleared. He had a whole garage of colbalt glass he found on these clearings. The original!!! and my aunt had the whole thing bulldozed down just like the house!! I was so FREGGIN mad!!! I don't get why ppl don't want to keep things that are old?!?! I LOVe old things! My mom says it's bc I have an old soul, lol. Idk, I just know the older the better!!

There is a gorgeous Victorian in a small town ( not revealing the state because i want it and I know people would go looking to snap it up) it looks like a horrid crumbling horror movie set from the outside, buy the inside is beyond gorgeous. Lots of original wood, fixtures, and even some remaining wallpaper. Its been on and off the market since 2014, so I'm hoping I have a chance to get it . I still have to save up , but I think it would be beyond amazing when fully restored. And it won't be too hard to do! Most of the work is already done! Though I will have to strip paint off of the original wood panels, * shudders* such gorgeous natural wood, and they painted it white! ( the photos show it halfway done)

Go ahead and talk a mortgage lender to get approved. My husband and I bought our dream house last fall and are having a ball restoring it. Contact the latest realtor to see if you can get in to see it. I bet you can get it easier than you think. We didn’t have to come up with near as much as we thought we would. Good luck 🍀

That house ended up selling just a few weeks ago, my problem is that my husband and I are both unemployed due to covid, so no mortgage lender even gives us a second glance. But it's OK, we moved back to California last week, moved in with friends. So now I should be able to find a job easier. Then we can save up more and get a place. Our plan is to save up enough over this next year to either buy a place outright or put enough down on it that we can pay it off in a year or two. Luckily the houses we like don't tend to be very expensive. Anywhere from 30,000 to 200,000. Admittedly, the higher prices would take us longer to pay off, even when paying extra each month, probably 5 to 8 years, with me working 72 hours a week.

Uuuugh! so sorry about the pocket doors! I couldn't imagine taking something so stunning and resorting them to putting oil cans on. They are by far the stunner of Victorian dining rooms ( aside from the stained glass) .
There is so much about this house I love. The blue kitchen. The blue exterior. The brightness. The attention to detail for period refurbishing. The two rocking chairs on that inviting verandah. You have create a beautiful oasis. A harbour of tranquillity and peace from the chaos of restoring old homes. Well done.
the previous owners maybe tried making the place into a duplex and that would account for the enclosed staircase? i noticed that a lot of ppl will buy old homes and make them into double rentals.
I don't think so. The staircase just goes to the attic.
I agree. They tend to close them to keep the upstairs and downstairs from being able to access one another and would had put an entrance to second floor outside somewhere. Then duplexes are born

What an absolutely stunning home. Unfortunately my husband and I are not in a position to save the 1928 house on our ranch. If we had started about 30 years ago it might have been doable but sadly it is even farther gone than your lovely Scotty. Congratulations on a job beautifully done.

Absolutely love the attention to detail. I simply adore that you have showcased as artwork old and beautiful clothing. I completely agree they should be shown as the art they are rather than stored away.
Your rescue dog in your arms is a replica of my Harley. He is 13 now and had a seizure this past Christmas. I gave him a low dose aspirin 3 days in a row and he seems to be back to his springy self. We know to value each day we have with him now.
I’ve always preferred to live in an older home, actually the older the better. My happiest memories seem to have been while I was living in an old house, but unfortunately I didn’t live in one with such style and age as yours.
The next best thing for me is going to be building a Victorian mansion dollhouse. I plan to attempt making the moldings, fireplaces, and other features a very close likeness to houses I’ve seen online.

Your home is stunning. Love your bedroom and bathroom. You have done what we do in the UK with your kitchen. It is a home not a museum and like you I have all the modern conveniences but our units are the more traditional shaker style which are painted a light grey. Our last home had a blue kitchen which was lovingly restored by my husband using Farrow and Ball eggshell paint. You must be so proud of what you have achieved. Can't understand why people live in new homes when they could live in period gems. We get that in the UK.
Wonderful home, it shows the restoration beautifully. I really like the kitchen sink you salvaged from the trash pile! I’ve been keeping my eyes open for one like that for the last 20 years, only ones I’ve found have been in use or not for sale.
I have one of those beautiful sinks in my house. It’s the original sink and the house was built in 1907 I believe. It’s so cool and I flipped out when I saw it. I hope you find one!!!
Every time I see one of those sinks I feel guilty about the one I threw away when I was about 23. I know better now. 🥺

Beautiful. Reminds of our first house we bought. Similar looking built in 1914. We miss that house. We looked at recently buying it back when it came up for sale. However the owners who bought it from us had removed the fireplaces and changed the roof line, took all the charm and originality from the home. I often get amazed how many people will buy these old homes and then change all the things that make it warm, charming and cozy. You did a great job keeping the charm alive in this home.

My house has low ceilings in some areas and I would definitely not change it. My electrical bill is always low (with solar it’s actually non existent). I’ll take the lower ceilings in exchange for the comfort of having my air on when it’s hot and my heat when it’s cold and not worrying about it. I used to live in a home with 14 ft ceilings and my electrical bill was crazy high yet it seemed my house was always too cold in winter and too hot in summer

I love the light 'cottage-y' feel of your home. As you have pointed out in your tour videos, Victorian houses vary so much. Here in San Diego we have very few of the Richardson Romanesque or brick Victorians; mostly wooden Queen Annes with colorful paint schemes. Sadly, many of the largest mansions were in what became a very bad neighborhood east of Downtown and have been lost. There are plenty of small cottages, though, mixed in with the Spanish style and Craftsman bungalows. Every time I spot one that reflects the love of the owner, I smile. Unfortunately these old homes were not usually insulated and I'd they were it was with old newspaper....which fall down the wall and get demolished by mice and bugs. So what was common was to close off anything unnecessary/not used and to drop tall ceilings to make it easier to heat...especially when money was an issue! This happened a lot when in the 70s fuel cost went stupid! A lot of places didn't know about pest control (which I'm not even sure when that started, 60-70s? Idk I do know my step dad was doing it in the 80s) or were too poor to pay for it. Sadly, my grandmothers house, that was ca. 1880s, my aunt tore down to put up a double wide! Yes....I hear every one of you gasp in horror!! So did I when I found out. I miss that old house. The kitchen was at the back...where it use to be detached from the main house. They had a covered breeze way from the kitchen that went from kitchen to main house. They enclosed that and widened it making a bed room and a bathroom (cast iron tub) a hallway and coat closet. They also added onto the side of the kitchen and made a wash room. My grandfather was a blaster. He would use dynamite to blast tree stumps from ground that was being cleared. He had a whole garage of colbalt glass he found on these clearings. The original!!! and my aunt had the whole thing bulldozed down just like the house!! I was so FREGGIN mad!!! I don't get why ppl don't want to keep things that are old?!?! I LOVe old things! My mom says it's bc I have an old soul, lol. Idk, I just know the older the better!!
