    Her spins were the bomb. I don't think there are skaters today spinning as fast as she did and her positions were excellent.

    Her style of skating was best showcased with this kind of hard-driving dance music.She really rocked.

    She landed the 3A in the warm-up for this program. shame she couldn't land it here, maybe would have brought some momentum into the LP, Albertville by extension.

    So she isnt perfect. I love her skating. It's strong, well timed, her costumes were always perfectly designed. I love her and feel that in a sense she was robbed

    Another overlooked story is that she totally should've been in the 88 games. She was the alternate and Caryn Kadavy dropped out after figures. Also, if figures had been abolished 3 years earlier, it would've been a very different story altogether. I find it bizarre that they changed this rule mid-quad (something that would never happen in gymnastics). Yes, Tonya landed the 3A in 91, but it was also the first year they got rid of figures, which created a shift in the sport. Tonya had too much time between 91 and Albertville to peak at the right time but not enough time to get used to being at the top. Before 91, she was the upstart dynamo kid who could out spin and out jump the "ladies." I think it completely rocked her when she didn't have to prove herself anymore. I don't think it's any coincidence that the next time she was at her best was the 94 nationals when she was coming off a terrible 93. She told reporters before the competition that she knew people "thought she was a has been and she had something to prove." Her 94 SP was unreal.

      I loved her 94 short programme, don't think they were the right programmes to take into the 94 Olympics though, her Lilehammer free skate should have been replaced with a more solid programme

      Catherine S Caryn Kadavy did not dropout after the figures. She skated in the short program as well (she skated extremely well too). The day of the long program she had a fever of 103 due to the flu, so not her fault. Also Caryn was the World bronze medalists from the year before. Saying Tonya should have been there instead of Caryn is not fair.

      So wrong! Tonya was very low in the figures in 1988 and then she completely BOMBED the SP, completely blowing a spin! She took herself out of 1988 US Nationals. Videos are on UA-cam. Jerri Campbell was the alternate.

      Right after this competition, Tonya reconciled with her ex, Jeff Gilooly.
      Need anything else be said ?
      It was all downhill from here.
      Over a month later she arrived at the Olympics a mere 3 days before her skate when all other skaters were there even before the opening ceremony.
      She got rid of her long time coach and rehired the disastrous Diane Rawlinson, who never did much for her skating.
      The rest is history and well documented in the movie "I Tonya".

      That's correct, she reconciled with Jeff, but again, it was the fault of the USFSA for interfering and for pressuring Tonya to reconcile with her husband as they felt being separated wouldn't be a good look. The USFSA made another destructive error towards Tonya. Also, it's true that Tonya Harding went to France very late, but the reason was further poor treatment by her own skating federation USFSA for making her stay and perform her short and long programs in front of them to show she's ready to compete. Bizarre and cruel behavior from them and also unusual.

    I am asthmatic and doctors have told me ice skating is a definite no no for all those
    that suffer asthma. This skater even ended up one time with pneumonia. I think she pushed her lungs too far.

    Required elements marks are kind of generous. In addition to the missed combo the flying spin looked short on rotations (I counted only 5 in position), no real footwork before the double jump, wobbly edges on the spirals...

      Its the same program as the 1991 skate america (its the same season). The intention was to do a 3A-2T so she could outperform and get the 1st at every SP... but Tonya was unable to land both at nationals and Olympics

  • @quiddy
    @quiddy 6 років тому +4

    To put things in perspective, though Tonya has been hitting the 3axel in practice and warmups, she had not hit it even remotely close to successful IN COMPETITION WHERE IT WOULD HAVE COUNTED since 1991 Skate America, so really she was only successful hitting it for 1 year. This is in striking contrast to Midori Ito who started hitting the triple Axel in 1988 through 1996 Japan Nationals.

    • @catherines4088
      @catherines4088 6 років тому +6

      Wrong when you say she wasn't remotely close. She was extraordinarily close in the Albertville SP. Would've changed everything.

    • @quiddy
      @quiddy 6 років тому +1

      Catherine S it doesn’t matter. Being close to hitting a triple Axel is the same result as not being close at all. Besides did you really think she would hit the triple Axel in the Olympics after not having hit it at all in competition since Skate America the year before?

    • @itsallgoodman1244
      @itsallgoodman1244 5 років тому +4

      Also she was correcting you that she was close, and she was. Catherine never said it was the same as being landed. Maybe actually watch the videos.
