      @Gary Henzler wow negative nelly alert

    • @chooseyourpoison5105

      @Gary Henzler OK so she's not the only Olympian to be abused by their parent, sexually molested by their stepbrother and have seven bells regularly flogged out of them by their husband (although I would say that must be a club with a pretty small membership) but it does make things much, much harder. Let me explain. When a person experiences repeated major traumas over a long period of time like Tonya experienced, the brain actually goes into caveman mode just like our ancestors did when threatened by a sabretooth, releasing cortisol and adrenaline 24/7 in anticipation of further danger, even if no threat is present at that moment. As a result, things that aren't necessary for survival (like skate training) go out the window in favour of things that are, such as food that provides immediate energy, and continual vigilance and alertness - resulting in weight gain from eating sugary food, poor sleep and fatigue from adrenal exhaustion. Having a brain stuck in survival mode also can lead to what appears to outsiders to be really dumb decisions, as the brain favours what is needed for immediate survival (like staying with an abusive partner because he'll kill you if you try to leave) over long term options. It also leads people to try to self-medicate to get relief from having a brain full of cortisol 24/7 - to be blunt, I'm just surprised she only ended up addicted to nicotine and not alcohol or meth. I'm not saying that Harding still doesn't bear some responsibility for the way things worked out, but what I am saying is that it would have been a LOT harder to do things like train regularly, sleep soundly, stay off the cigarettes and eat healthily. You should study trauma physiology and brain chemistry sometime - it gives one a lot of insight into why people do the things they do.

    People always talk about her jumps, but she had gorgeous spins as well. Pity that during that time she was so maligned for being the "wrong" kind of working class girl. The media made her out to be masculine, butch, and generally just not "pretty" or what skating was "supposed" to look like.
    She was radiant, and it's such a shame the world of her sport was so damn set against her.

      Ikr? I don't have a problem with Tonya receiving some sort of consequence for covering up the attack after the fact (the only thing she was ever charged with) but to ban her from ever having anything to do with skating again (not even coaching or even working at an ice rink) was way too harsh. And taking away the titles she had won BEFORE the attack was just wrong - that wasn't about justice, it was just petty revenge.

    Через много лет посмотрела фильм "Тоня против всех", рассказывающий её историю жизни. После этого, когда у меня случаются проблемы в моей жизни, я вспоминаю Тоню Хардинг, потому что такую силу духа, такую целеустремлённость, такое трудолюбие и любовь к тому что делаешь мало у кого можно встретить. I remember in the 90's how the establishment and even the fans generally did not like anyone of Tonya's body type (what would now be called "thicc") to be ice skating champions, nor was it considered physically appealing, as they favored the thin willowy types (Yamaguchi, Kerrigan, Baiul, Kwan, Lipinski, etc). Nor was raw athleticism, like what we saw in her style, valued that much for female skaters.
    But decades later, I now see that Tony Harding was truly an outstanding skater, if only for her incredible jumps and spins. And she looked radiant and sexy, even. Those phenomenal legs (she was mocked for having them then) would be considered desirable by many today. Too bad she was banned from competition - I thought a suspension or jail time would have been more just, not a lifetime ban. But she is a fighter (literally at one time) and I'm glad she seems to be alright with her life today.

    • @chooseyourpoison5105
      @chooseyourpoison5105 4 роки тому +32

      What gets me is the way the media would go nuts over her triple axels, but mock the powerful legs that actually enabled her to do them. Like, contradiction much? It kinds of reminds me of how tennis player Martina Navratilova was loved for her powerful serves at the same time she was sneered at for her "unfeminine" muscular arms. Like, how did people think she managed to serve a ball at 280 km/hr - with wet noodles?

      Art Jorge The first time I saw her skate, not knowing who she was, I was captivated by her grace and princess - like looks.. 😍😍😍
      Her face is like a porcelain doll..
      Can't believe the judges brainwashed people that she wasn't feminine cause they couldn't touch her in the technical part and wanted an EXCUSE to downgrade her !! Maybe outside the rink she was a tomboy, which I find utterly cute ;), but on the ice she radiated elegance and fairydust magic and was mesmerizing..
      Even the haters can't help but gasp at her performance that's y they're here !..

    Tonya just simply had the talent and guts to go out there and do it. She is one of a kind, but so heartbreaking her career did not go as it should have. She didn't have any advantages, she had to scrap for every bit of it. I wish it had gone better for her. And even so, she has persevered. I would wish for her to be back out on the ice, where she was above all others in her time. I'm sure she can still skate around most others on the planet. On another note, Nancy was certainly a very talented skater as well. They are both beautiful.

    Harding took a lot of knocks for not being the ice princess type. People forget that Nancy was packaged to look like the ice princess type, but that was just hair, make-up, costumes, etc. She was stiff, robotic, and actually rather boring to watch most of the time.

    • @chooseyourpoison5105
      @chooseyourpoison5105 5 років тому +65

      I've always thought that Nancy was very immature. Perhaps it was a result of being the youngest in her family and the only daughter and being the "baby girl," but she came across as whiny, and quite frankly, as needing to darn well grow up. Apparently when she was younger the owners of the rink she trained at booted her out and told her to come back once she'd lost the snotty attitude. She came back two days later and apologized . . .

    Tonya was not as artistic as some of the other skaters, but she was one of the most athletic. Tonya was a very powerful skater and despite the controversy and resulting fall from grace, she is still the first to land the triple and no one can take that away from her. I am most impressed with how she has handled her life in the aftermath. I remain her fan forever.

    • @chooseyourpoison5105
      @chooseyourpoison5105 2 роки тому +1

      The worst part of it is, Tonya did not finish high school and had never held a regular job due to skating - by banning her, they took away her only means of making a living - it was literally the only thing she knew how to do. I don't have a problem with her receiving some sort of consequence for covering up for her husband (the only thing she was ever charged with) but a lifetime ban was way too harsh. And the stripping her of the medals she won BEFORE the attack was disgusting; she won those fair and square.
