HEY, Could you do a Smart Home with Ikea Tradfri and Fyrtur Smart blinds, i would love to see them, and if you would recommend them. THanks for doing such cool Videos
3:50 The Nest Thermostat E works with temperature sensors 👍 And I know you didn't really mention it because of it not being available to the public but it kinda still is. They still have loads for sale at walmart and even at cheaper prices on ebay. I got mine for about $118 and I love it I don't know why they're discontinuing the Nest E. It works great and is a good mix between premium and budget.
As a certified HVAC tech; anything but nest. If you get a good one okay great, personally i love the design and interface. However, about 50% of the Nest thermostats we have installed have needed replacing within the first year. 1/10 are defective straight out of the box. Nothing is 100% I know, but my company highly reccomends away from nest due to all of the problems weve had with them. Significantly less out of ecobee or honeywell smart thermostats.
Have you noticed with the Nest the temperature allowances vary by 3-4 degrees C? This means that if you set it to 20 degrees it might not kick in till it hits 17 or 16 degrees. Nest says this is by design and don't consider it a problem. I am swapping it out or an Ecobee as 4 degrees is the difference between comfortable and cold. Be interesting to see if you have noticed that on your units?
I LOVE my Ecobee - it saved us $1000s by not having to rebuild the A/C upstairs - the builder put the thermostat and air return outside our bedroom so the bedroom and bath are always too cold or too hot! We were able to use the Ecobee remote to send the temps from the bath and bedroom to the thermostat outside the rooms and not use the main thermostat at all! Works great and is just awesome! Thank you Ecobee!!!
My first foray into smart thermostats is with the Nest 2020. $129 + $15 for the saucer plate worked for me. I think for a first time purchaser, going from the old school - normal thermostat, this sub $150 product is a good choice.
I didn't spring for the saucer plate, and so glad I didn't. It looks absolutely amazing on the wall without it. I had to sand down the the wall texture, fill old holes, and repaint, but Love It!!!
for anyone watching this is 2022. I just got the nest thermostat 2020" the cheaper one" and for custom schedule say hour per hour temp changes. all you have to do is make an all-day routine in the home app and set for example, at 12pm set AC to 72 and so on for every time, you want to make a tempo change.
I’m so thankful you showed those disadvantages of the cheaper Ness currently I have an asked Jen to I really like it. I had it about five years before I ever put it on the wall just today it started showing me low battery and disconnected from Wi-Fi so I suspect the internal battery is just finally going bad as the device is over 20 years old.
Thank you for all the details. I had the same issue with my nest app when I setup my nest locks a while back. Nest support said that since my home was from the original pre-release nest thermostat it could not support some new devices. I had to create a new home and migrate all 15 of my existing nest devices over. that was a pain, but over a year later I finally finished it when I replaced my expired Nest Protects.
I've had an ecobee for about 4 years now. Pretty happy with it. The Google integration works better to do extra controls Vs trying to make it work with the ecobee app. I have 6 room sensors
My recommendation is to check with the electric company provider before purchasing any devices. Some companies offer coupons or rebates on thermostats. After performing some research, we received a free Google Nest Thermostat E. Additionally, a $25 gift card due to DYI install. I hope this helps.
We've had the Nest Thermostat E for a few years now and have had zero complaints. I had to remove the "home away" features because it tends to turn the temperature down when we're sleeping to a chilling level lol
In Central Illinois and we're losing ours fast :( Only had about a week of "internet-looking" winter this year as in snow and ice and frost. I haven't used my snow shovel in over 2 years, I don't even know where it is. The few times its snowed it never lasts more than a day. The locals love to say goodbye to winter but Frosty here is sad :(
Couldn’t u just raise the temp which would raise the temp in your room? If u have found a way for these nest sensors to make sense please let me know. The ecobee sounds slightly more uses full when we consider the average temp for sensors
Do you know if/when you'll be able to get your hands on the upcoming Wyze thermostat? I would love to see a review of that unit compared to the more expensive options on the market.
The third gen is soooo good. Our family has had it for about 1 1/2 years and the feature set and temp ring are just fantastic. Also Excel Energy gave us $100 off for switching to it plus a free month of heating
If you're interested in the Ecobee 3, keep an eye on Woot. I picked up the Thermostat and 3 remote sensors for under $200 because it was "open box" or refurb. Box arrived with everything and no damage to any of the items. Easy to install and now just waiting to see those sweet sweet metrics come through.
I just bought the Nest E. I was going to go with the new budget one, but I wanted the sensors, the spin dial, and the learning. The Nest E is still around, so would recommend that one. Grab it before its gone!
Thank you so much for the video. I purchased Nest Thermostat 2020, but just like you mentioned in the video I could not connect it to the wifi network and I could not figure out why. I finally got the thermostat connected to wifi when I created a new home in the google home app.
Thanks for the info on ecobee. I currently have a nest and I've been trying to figure out how to get it to increase the temperature swing so that I can keep my furnace from short cycling. Looks like I might need to get an ecobee and sell the nest.
ugly crap that is a trinkety piece of crap. swipe the wall to change the temp? no way! First gen, third gen, how about drink some gin and skip this and go buy something better?
I agree the smart learning feature of Nest needs a disable feature. I hate fighting what it thinks I like vs telling it what I want. Don’t know how many times I’ve manually overrode what it was doing to have it switch back cause it’s what it thinks I want.
Another great thing about the Ecobee is, there are no subscription fees per month like Nest. I put an Ecobee 3 Lite in my sister's house, and one in mine. Love them!
Removing heat costs a lot more energy than adding heat. Allowing your thermostat to swing multiple degrees so that it “runs less” will cost you more in electricity. Having it maintain 76 degrees will not only keep your house at the temperature you like it to be, but allows the condenser to only have to cycle on to maintain temperature for short periods of time. Instead of turning on, removing an accumulated 2 degrees from your house, shutting down, and allowing the heat to build up again
I found the ecobee app way too cumbersome to use, since I like having a held temperature always and using different sensors. If the nest app let you pick custom sensor schedules it would be perfect for me
I have an autistic child so the negatives of not being able to navigate the physical device is actually a positive for my household. He likes to change the temp as he walks by because he likes the changing display.
Just installed the new nest.. actually works great I have not had any issues adjusting on they physical device it looks nice and for 130.. the unit is for upstairs my downstairs might get the premium nest the nest look way better then the ecobee in my opinion
I own a commercial building and need 14 units. Should I go ecobee or nest? As a land lord i pay for the electric bill. Which is all based on 1 electric meter.
I stopped using the Nest App for my 3rd Gen Nest, and just use the Google Home app instead. However if you wanted to change settings you'd still need the Nest App as the settings aren't accessible through Google Home. I use my desktop browser to make advanced changes, however.
I think I’m gonna disagree with the “not user friendly” comment. Installed mine today - no issues figuring out how to use it or any issues with the side touch usability. It’s a great first smart thermostat and unless you’ve a huge house will serve most people just fine.
I recently switched from Nest 3rd gen to Ecobee. The Nest 3rd gen has a by far better feel and the UI is light years ahead. But I had so many issues getting the API to work right with Home Assistant that I gave up. The Ecobee could use a polish in UI and and cosmetics but at least I was able to get it connected to Home Assistant to not use the physical thermostat anymore :)
With local rebates and stuff, was able to get it for $24! I might just use it for a year and then upgrade if needed! I definitely need the temp sensors.
Hmm. I live in AZ. I have ecobee lite. My biggest gripe is this. We are on a time of use plan for our electric with APS. The hours between 3pm and 8pm are the most expensive. Through the App, my AC was running an average of 50 minutes during that time. I precool till 3 o'clock and I get the house to about 76 degrees. At 3, the app is set to 82 degrees. It will take until about 5:30 before the house gets to 82. Then it cycles until 8pm when I have it set for 78 again. I would rather run it for 10 minutes at the top of each hour. The app for the lite at least has no timer settings just temperature. You can also not set the temp for part of the hour. but rather for that whole hour. My hypothesis is that it would stay around 80 in the house if I could run it for 10 minutes at the top of the hour, and then just repeat that during the peak time periods from APS. Keeping it cool, rather than cooling it after it gets to 82. Having it this summer though has saved me over 100 bucks every month of the summer. My august bill was $137 less than the same month last year. Having a timer option that would do portions of the hour would make the ecobee the best unit ever!
I wonder if you could use something like SmartThings or even a voice assistant routine to run the A/C for ten minutes during peak pricing as a schedule. Then turn it back off or up real high. I save a lot using the peak pricing as well. Pays for the thermostat so fast.
@@kellanstevens Oh. I see. Excuse my ignorance. It should prob be optional everywhere....our comfort is killing this planet. Thanks for your reply...I am learning.
I am not from USA but that's a bit interesting for me. Are you heating/cooling apartment with air-conditioning or what? How is it possible from one thermostat/device?
In my career I saw lots of Nest Acting funky!!! From not registering user input to shortages on the back plate showing wires on set up that were not even connected!! I haven't tried 3rd Gen but my sentiments are already locked and I'm bias!! Ecobee FTW!!
Nice video. A few comments though: Nest Temperature Sensor also works with Nest Thermostat E, not just Nest Learning Thermostat. Also all Nest Thermostats work with Alexa.
Thanks! I left out the Nest E because it’s not available to the public anymore. Only Pro installers have access to it now. Also I might have said it slightly confusing but yes all the Nest thermostats work with Alexa and Google Assistant.
When I started using the Home app on iPhone it didn't recognise my existing Google home which I had previously set up on a pixel device. Google home would not work with the TV or automated settings - I had to set up a new home like yourself to get it to work. I'm hoping if I get a Nest thermostat, I won't have the same problem again.
I am also here in AZ, held back getting the learning thermostat. Ordered the Wyze thermostat before Google announced this. I just cancelled it and going to order this new thermostat....maybe go for the Ecobee.
Great review Reed! I've had two V2 Ecobees and four additional sensors for a year and a half. I really like them and definitely notice a difference in the comfort of our home. I have a two year option at BB to upgrade to the "latest" version which I think I'm going to do. Just have to pay the difference. On sale that should be minimal. Wouldn't want to do without them now!
There is a critical difference between the 3rd Gen Nest and the $129 Google Nest. If you have a multi stage heating/cooling system, the $129 Nest will not accommodate the 2nd stage cooling (y2) or 2nd heat (W2) functions of the system. This is especially critical to consider if you have a heat pump system with auxiliary heat or a hybrid system.
I have the budget nest it works great but come to fined out after i upgraded from the 4 wire to the 8 wire for the added C wire and to add my humidifier it has no control for the humidifier. so now im looking at the ecobee and the nest gen3. but from the ecobee videos it looks like its apple based we run android around here lol
Great video thanks, I'm sure things have changed in 2 years. Questions if you don't mind me asking... Is there a way to get a smart thermostat that can turn my entire houses radiator heat on/off if any of my three floors are below/above a predetermined temperature.
Excellent video and you earned a subscriber! I have bad bearings in my heater inducer motor which has brought my attention to how often my gas heater is cycling (wakes me up in the night even). The ability of the Ecobee to set the temperature differential/swing is a game changer and the most important feature to me, second is the ability to schedule run times outside of peak hours. Thank you for sharing.
I had the gen. 2 Nest and loved it. Moved to a new house that has a Ecobee lite and it’s ok. It doesn’t have the features like you shared on in the video. I hooked up the nest but the wiring doesn’t allow me to use it.
Nest comes with occupancy sensor as suppose to Ecobee have separate thingy. I just returned the Ecobee light. Sorry, finally I went with Wyze that also have few degree set up before it kicks in.
I have an odd situation. My dog has developed severe anxiety over the relay click on our thermostat. I am looking for a thermostat that has the quietest click or no relay click at all. Any recommendations? I don't care if it is smart or not
My biggest issue with the new nest is it doesn't have the temperature lock feature. As a airbnb host, this feature is key to prevent guest from going too high or too low on the thermostat. Also It took hours of research and discussion with google support just to find out this version didn't have the feature the information was not readily available, still deciding if I want to return it or not.
I'm wondering if you found a solution to purchasing a thermostat with the lock feature. I was having success buying Thermostat E to be able to still use The Nest app instead of the Google app. Lately, everything I find forces me into the google app that doesn't have the lock feature. Let me know if you have found a solution. I am also a host that needs this feature.
@@luannhimea3934 Based on my conversation with google support I was lead to believe each thermostat except the one I own has this feature, but if you're saying the E doesn't have it then that's not correct. I would guess the older models or the leaning models. Good luck let me know if you find it.
ugh figures. I love the nest app specifically because of the user interface, and I hate the Google Home App. So what you're saying is im gonna buy another 3rd gen. July 2021 will be 4 years old since I bought my 3rd gen and it was the best purchase I ever made.
I’m a technician, the Ecobee was the easiest thing to set up. The only annoying thing is they did not include any nails. So I had to go to Lowe’s and buy nails. Other than that, it’s installation was a breeze.
Great info. I love my budget Nest. A few things to add: 1) If you have an older HVAC system, less than efficient conditions (insulation, and ductwork) but actually is compatible with a smart thermo, these new features will not actually be beneficial. 2) The installation on the budget Nest does not require a C Wire where the other 2 do. This is fixable in most cases with a adapter plug, HVAC knowledge, or professional installation, but it's an extra step on the process.
Thank you for your informative reviews. Not another google nest product for me...I have 3 Google nest 3rd Gen thermostats, one of them malfunctioned to connect to wifi within about a year, google support is poor and they did not replaced my thermostat, I don't recommend their thermostats due to high price tag and poor customer service.
Mirror mirror on the wall… what’s the best smart thermostat of them all?

I have the budget nest it works great but come to fined out after i upgraded from the 4 wire to the 8 wire for the added C wire and to add my humidifier it has no control for the humidifier. so now im looking at the ecobee and the nest gen3. but from the ecobee videos it looks like its apple based we run android around here lol
The base nest is perfect for every dad out there who doesn’t want guests to touch his thermostats
There are different versions of the ecobee, could you make a video on what is different?
Great video thanks, I'm sure things have changed in 2 years. Questions if you don't mind me asking... Is there a way to get a smart thermostat that can turn my entire houses radiator heat on/off if any of my three floors are below/above a predetermined temperature.
I went with the budget 1 partly because I’m new to smart thermostat but also cause I got it on sale for $99
2 stage heating/cooling how to set up ?
Love my ecobee. It’s the best
Budget? I just bought the new Wyze Thermostat for $49.99. Can't beat that.
I got my Ecobee free. Courtesy of the Ontario government.
Can you connect any smart thermostat with traditional split AC (outside and inside unit)?
Very good info and quick video thank you.
Does the new nest have a lock feature
I had the gen. 2 Nest and loved it. Moved to a new house that has a Ecobee lite and it’s ok. It doesn’t have the features like you shared on in the video. I hooked up the nest but the wiring doesn’t allow me to use it.
Is it really worth switching to the smart nest ?
Nest comes with occupancy sensor as suppose to Ecobee have separate thingy. I just returned the Ecobee light. Sorry, finally I went with Wyze that also have few degree set up before it kicks in.
I have an odd situation. My dog has developed severe anxiety over the relay click on our thermostat. I am looking for a thermostat that has the quietest click or no relay click at all. Any recommendations? I don't care if it is smart or not
Quick question does this also work with a heat pump HVAC system if you have one in your house ?
im ac technician in phx arizona n yes it is very normal to run your ac in november lol
@@luannhimea3934 I've not made any progress. The version that does this is almost twice the price.
@@5thspring217 thanks for the response. Do you know which version still allows the temperature lock?
@@luannhimea3934 Based on my conversation with google support I was lead to believe each thermostat except the one I own has this feature, but if you're saying the E doesn't have it then that's not correct. I would guess the older models or the leaning models. Good luck let me know if you find it.
Ecobee main drawback i felt was, its geofencing does t support more than 1 device. Did it change or still only support 2 device ?
I thought I was the only one with my AC on in November. Barstow Calif.
You can't set up room sensors with the new one?
ugh figures. I love the nest app specifically because of the user interface, and I hate the Google Home App. So what you're saying is im gonna buy another 3rd gen. July 2021 will be 4 years old since I bought my 3rd gen and it was the best purchase I ever made.
Love my ecobee
How do we configure ecobee contact sensor in routine in Google home
I’m a technician, the Ecobee was the easiest thing to set up. The only annoying thing is they did not include any nails. So I had to go to Lowe’s and buy nails. Other than that, it’s installation was a breeze.
Nails? What on earth would you want nails for? It comes with screws, and for good reason. I wouldn't hire you to install a roll of toilet paper.
@@TheEudaemonicPlague I came to say the same....lol. Tech using nails?!? 😂
Great video
What is the best thermostat for split AC that work with Alexa
I wish Nest would come out with new cameras for outdoor use. I really like their doorbells.
And now they have
Thank you for your informative reviews.
Not another google nest product for me...I have 3 Google nest 3rd Gen thermostats, one of them malfunctioned to connect to wifi within about a year, google support is poor and they did not replaced my thermostat, I don't recommend their thermostats due to high price tag and poor customer service.
Great video and helpful content. Thank you. 🙏
The 3rd gen looks so much better in my opinion. It resembles a retro circle thermostat.
