Spot on! I wish I has seen this video before I bought a Nest "smart learning thermostat". I love the manufacturing quality and user interface but it's worthless for my hydronic system. The operation scheme is inscrutable and I've found the "learning" capability mentally challenged. I was sitting at my kitchen table and the darn thing set back from 70F to 47F. I could do better with an old dual mercury switch unit. I've been an HVAC engineer for 30 years and done a lot of energy conservation work. As you discussed in the video, temperature dead-bands and time delays on multi-stage systems are very important for maximizing performance. The Nest is useless for setting these very simple parameters.

I've been extremely happy with everything on this unit except how it handles holds but that can be worked around to have it utilize all kinds of data to do whatever you might need. I take it you have currently changed to the ecobee from the nest?

Compressor min cycle off time is actually the amount of wait time that your AC compressor must remain off before turning back on. This allows pressure in your system to balance and prevents wear caused by short cycling the compressor with a high pressure difference across it.

This is a really good video. We are getting a new furnace and Ac soon. I have had a nest thermostat for years but have been told nest won’t work well with a two stage newer furnace. Hopefully they fix that one bug will help.

Great video! I wish I had seen this before I bought my Nest and its extra room sensors. I've been struggling with it. Now, I know why. I sure hope I can sell them. Also, the Ecobee works with my Apple HomeKit. I'm going to also by the Eufy security system with water detection sensors. They all work together. I didn't realize that Eufy was a part of Anker! I love Anker chargers, etc. I'm going to be all set! Thank you!

I wish that the NEST had a HOLD FUNCTION. Say I want to open my windows yet not turn my thermostat OFF which would also turn off my HVAC blower when I have set to run 24/7 (it runs at a very low speed, silent essentially.) With the NEST that is impossible to do, considering I also have a schedule set for the AUTO mode as well! I understand that the Ecobee has a programmable HOLD feature with various options to select depending upon how you'd prefer the hold function to act.
I need your help - you sound smart. I have two ecobee 3 lite thermostats in my own house and love them! My Ecobee 3 Lite’s didn’t come with remote “Smart Sensors”
This summer I bought a single family two story home with central A/C to rent out. It’s got a typical Air handler (fan) in the basement with an A/C compressor outside. The tenants are great people. The say their central A/C works great on the 1st floor - but the one and only Honeywell t-stat in the home (located on the 1st floor by the air return) turns off the A/C whenever the 1st floor gets cold enough - and since cold air falls and hot air rises, the 2nd floor never gets cold enough. It’s especially uncomfortable when the family is trying to sleep on hot summer nights. I think the solution is easy. I want to replace the only t-stat with an Ecobee model that comes with a remote sensor or two I can put on the 2nd floor in the bedrooms so when the 1st floor reaches the set temperature it will signal the A/C compressor to turn off, BUT I WANT THE 2nd FLOOR SENSORS (WHICH ARE NOT COLD ENOUGH) TO SIGNAL THE CENTRAL FAN (AIR HANDLER) TO CIRCULATE THE AIR (VIA KEEPING CENTRAL FAN ON) UNTIL THE 2nd FLOOR SENSORS REACH THE SET TEMPERATURE.
QUESTION: Can I program the ecobee remote “smart sensors” to keep the fan running UNTIL one or both sensor(s) reach the set temperature on the main thermostat? If so how do I do this?
You are literally describing almost the exact reason I got into Hubitat. I had all the data I needed with Ecobee, but just not enough functionality to do what I wanted. This video ua-cam.com/video/cDLUT6XBe6E/v-deo.html will help you with some more context. This is currently what I am still running in my home. I have the furnace fan set to run any time the hottest and coldest sensors of the house are out of a certain range. When I am sleeping, I make the range tighter to make sure everyone gets a good nights rest. This solution has been 100% reliable since I've implemented it, the best part is I don't have to do anything for it to work.

Thanks for taking the time to comment, and yes, my eyes are different color. What's really trippy is the green one is sometimes blue for a day or so depending on what I eat. The wife loves it.
After being a Nest owner since the product was introduced I'm changing from my Nest gen 3 learning thermostat to an Ecobee 5. My big reason is that Google has taken the Nest from a device that used to work with many 3rd party products to a closed product that only works with Google devices. That was a deal breaker for me. Not advertised is that Ecobee now also interfaces with a Hubitat smart hub. I moved to Hubitat after the collapse of the Wink smart hub network. Also as you inferred to, is that Nest works fine if you don't want to tweek the settings for comfort. The longer you have a Nest the more you realize its limitations and inability to make the changes you need to truly be comfortable. So while the Ecobee has a steeper learning curve due to all its granularity, you will appreciate that granularity in the long run and its ability to interface with many 3rd party products. And finally the sensors. I was an early adopter of the Nest sensor and sent it back for refund two weeks after I got it. It is a product disaster and its only function is to become a remote thermostat for temperature settings and will hijack control of temperature setting of a location, regardless of the set point on your thermostat. It has no other ability to note if a room is occupied, the overall comfort level the home, or work with other sensors in the home concurrently. I expected Nest to use an Ecobee line of thinking when they introduced their sensor and instead got a useless product. Yeah the Ecobee isn't as sexy as the Nest, but after you own that Nest for a bit and learn its limitations, you regret going for that pretty face!

Thanks a lot for this review! I live in Québec, Canada. This moorning , a sunny day, minus 10 Celsius. Like you said, I appreciate the heat from the sun ( large windows, 30 feet, south orientation). But if we don't open a window the temperature will raise over 27 Celsius and the cooling system will go on.
Do you think that Ecobee could control a free cooling system? I could use the dock that takes the fresh and cold outside air from my air exchanger plug it directly in the furnace....I should also allow some hot air to go out and avoid overpressure....

If you combine your Ecobee with a smart wifi plug, you could then very easily setup a smart command on webcore that would run your air exchange when the temperature goes a set number of degrees above where your thermostat is set. If your air exchanger is wired in and has a control wire to the thermostat that should work as well. Using webcore and Ecobee, there is definitely a way.
I have the same issue. I have Geothermal radiant floor system and the same wall of windows facing south. On a cold winter day my solar gain can actually heat my main room over 70F/22C degrees without issue if the sun is out. The last thing I want my system doing in the dead of winter is kicking on the AC. 😀
@@RagnarBlox In your case don’t put control in “auto” always use either “heat or cool!”
Can you override any of the "smart" settings on the Ecobee? For instance the person detection, can you turn that on/off? Can you just set a "HOLD AT" option that overrides it all?
I ask because I have a Geothermal HVAC system and Geothermal is designed to work better without a lot of changes. In the winter my radiant floor heat keeps our house fine at 68 degrees. We never set it over 70 in the winter. I live in Ithaca, NY so we get very cold winters here but we designed our house to face south with a wall of windows so on a freezing cold day our solar gain can actually heat the room just fine with NO systems running. The last thing I want is for the system to kick on the AC during the winter if my room gets too warm.
You can select which systems it can use. I do the same, in the spring and fall I will often make the heat or cool unavailable. You can set a permanent hold as well. If you want to add some smart functions I strongly recommend adding a Hubitat to your home, after it is setup it will automate that for you. There is a whole bunch of Hubitat videos on this channel that might help you decide.
In fact, maybe the Hubitat with a Zigbee smart thermostat is a better option? I use this for my bathroom and kitchen floor heat.

Any updates about the hold thing. Is it baked into the hardware. Is it something that a software update could fix? And just to clarify you are saying that if you use any app that isn’t their Ecobee app is when it make it hold correct? If I put it with a googles smart hub would that also cause the issue?
So far I haven't seen any change to the hold function, every interaction with other apps seems to cause it. I highly recommend using webcore if you are getting started with any smart devices in your home, my current work around is every hour, it will just tell the thermostat to go back into resume program which has been a solid work around for about a year. There are also a ton of automations available like turning on outside lights at sunset I really like.

I'm still using this thermostat and it's still doing the job. Thanks for commenting. I'm friends with some people that it takes years to notice, granted, my UA-cam lighting does bring it out I think.
So I had techs come out 4 times because of best 103 error and ac won’t turn on because apparently best send out only 13 volts instead of 24v to the contactor coil outside. Tried two nest still e103 does echo bee get this?
The ecobee is designed to work with a 24vAC system so I doubt this would be any problem. Support with the company is great, I did have a sensor stop working the logged in online confirmed the problem in minutes and I had a new one in a few days. I would give them a shot, I don't think you'll regret it. Worst case you return it if you have any issues. Make sure you let us know how it turns out.
I'm looking to purchase my 1st smart thermostat, and I'm so ticked at the auto away feature. I have an ill family member and I have to go out of town frequently leaving my furbabies behind. I want to be able to merely set my temps and/or change them by phone if need be due to the wiggy high and low Spring temps so my furbabies stay comfortable while I'm gone, but the auto away feature by not sensing motion and/or using my phone location makes it impossible for me to do that on either the Nest or the Ecobee. They both need to really have it where that feature can be shut off completely for those of us who don't want/need it automatically switching to it. Any suggestions you have are appreciated I'm not sure if putting the Ecobee in the hold mode will prevent this issue, or if I can change it byphone in hold mode, but I do know that Nest doesn't even have a Hold feature on it?
Go with the ecobee, you set a night temp, a day temp and an away temp. You can always override or hold permanently very easy with an app if it's connected to wifi.

Great review. How does the temp averaging work across multiple rooms / sensors? Does that mean I cannot set specific temp targets for the rooms the sensors are located in? Thanks
You can pick and choose which sensors should be used for certain times. For example, if your schedule is set to away, you could use average for all sensors, but for sleep, you could have it set to maintain the temperature in the bedroom only regardless of the other zones.

@@paullee9982 I think you might be able to set something like this up using the Ecobee occupied mode, but I haven't looked into it. You might want to do what I'm working on at the moment and add a home automation hub, Hubitat. If you can logically process it this thing is supposed to be able to do it. After a few weeks I'll have some videos on what I'm doing with Hubitat, it might help you out. So far from the thermostats out there, Ecobee seems to integrate the best with this type of setup but I'm sure there are many other options.

With the Nest is it only able to hook up to 1 phone? So only me or my husband would be able to adjust heat when we aren't home or can both?
I'm not sure if there is a user limit, but I can tell you we had no issues with the wife and myself connecting to the Nest at the same time.
My thermostat is in the hallway so if all bedrooms are closed then it won't get cold air and run forever. Can I use this and a sensor placed in bedroom and only rear temperature from the sensor?
Yes you can. This works great to maintain a sleep temperature in the bedroom.

I'm now thinking Ecco bee might have been the way to go.
I've been concerned about sticking with the "nest/google ecosystem" so I stuck with the nest thermostat. Not so sure now.
One question - I know now the sensors for eccobee are much more functional but I'm concerned about false positives in terms of setting the sensors to heat a particular room if you're in that room.
I've heard it can over work your furnace.
If you go downstairs (for example) to grab something, your down there for say 5mins then back upstairs. It starts pumping heat to that area thinking your there.
You leave it stops. Is there a time buffer for the sensor, like you need to be down there for set amt of time or do you personally use this feature at all?
On a side note, I think the "temp averaging across zones" feature is worth the swap alone.
I have the temperature following me around feature completely disabled, instead, I use Webcore to run the furnace fan to balance all the temperatures throughout the different zones. This way in summer cooler air from the basement will get circulated through the warmer upstairs, and in winter, the warmer upstairs on sunny days can get circulated into my basement.
My only regret with swapping is that I bought the Nest at all. I wish I would have just got the Ecobee.
If you're a getting into home automation and devices at all, I highly recommend you check out Webcore, you can do much more with all your devices. More than I'm doing by a long shot.

Does Ecobee have locks??
If you use multiple sensors I doubt you'd have trouble with the system being overworked. I have a total of 4 in the house and have never had that trouble. I did have trouble with one sensor being goofy with battery use and support immediately noticed it, I had a new one sent at my door in a couple of days no questions asked. Using this system with a smart hub, hubitat in my case, has been absolutely fantastic. I use an automation to circulate the furnace fan to keep temperatures even across the home if I have sunshine coming in. There is a bit of delay on occupancy but I've never encountered any trouble with this.

Also we have a thermostat in 3 locations in the house that are supposed to work together and stay with 2 degrees of each other. Is the ecobee able to do this. Have in 3 separate rms yet work with each other.
Last one. We have alexa and Google home. If we get the echo voice will that interfere with my other elexa. Will both be talking at once. If you are not sure on this that's OK. Thoughy I'd try
I use my ecobee to run the furnace fan if the zone temperatures are too far out using a program called webcore. Alexa works through the ecobee as well I believe but haven't set mine up. I do have Google home and have had no issues with the apps not playing nice so far.
What do you mean...it has a constant hold feature?
If you use anything other than their app to turn on the furnace fan the ecobee will go into a permanent hold with the current settings, temperature, fan and comfort setting.
I like the sensor thing... our thermostat is in an awful location. I smashed it... for you, not the lazy programmers ;-)

Do the voice commands work without the wi-fi? Will they work out of the box or do we need a service like Alexa?
I haven't been using any of the voice options personally. Most voice services use wifi so i would imagine that would be required.
As a non ecobee nest user , I don’t know what “a hold” is or means with respect to the ecobee Thermostat and it’s api usage.
Seems like the sort of term that’s only meaningful is one is already an user - so what is a “hold”?
For me the biggest issue is does it work only on the intranet - that is no need for a web service to run it with the sensor data. Does the custom code get uploaded to the ecobee or does it run on some web portal?
The ecobee system is designed to work fully connected to the internet. That being said, the device does accept local commands from my hubitat hub when the internet is down, it also continues to function normally based on it's presets if the internet is down.
The hold is something ecobee does by default when using a third party app to change a setting like temperature. It just holds at whatever user setting you changed until you change it, or get an automation to resume the program on the thermostat.
Thanks. I will be dumping my NEST in the very near future. It worked OK for several years but now it disconnects for no reason so I can't control from the app without a reboot. PITA! Do not care for Googles oversight on the device either. It is MY home thermostat and they have no business tracking what I do with it!
I have a Sinope thermostat on hubitat that runs completely locally on automations that you might like as well. There are some videos on the channel about both of them.
Does is have any issues with heating the house the ecobee. A friend of mine tells me his ecobee won’t allow him to heat the house only cool it?
No issues at all, I'm thinking it is likely an error hooking up a wire.

I think you can set the polling interval. By default I think it's 5 min, but don't quote me on that. I have set mine to 10 minutes on hubitat and that seems to be fine for my use.
I agree, NEST does not work well for me other than is almost the samething as my old HOneywell. The smart learning are not that smart. Only convenience is that I can remotely control it via the app. Whether to switch to the Ecobee , based on what I saw, doesn't make a difference to me.
I think it only makes sense to switch off you're thinking about home automation. Or want to use the data from your thermostat for smart controls. If all you want is wifi control you'll get that reliably from nest.
The ecobee sensor hardware is fine. The problem is that ecobee takes the raw data and averages it over a 20-30 minute period and reports that data: both on the displat and the log files. I have measured the actual room temperatures using a digital data logging thermometer and ecobee can be off by a 10 degree range (+/-5 degrees). I was using the ecobee with 3 remote sensors and could not control the temperature of my room. I have returned it and bought a better thermostat. Good luck.
Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. A 20 to 30 min interval is horrible. I wonder if you had a bad unit. The reporting on mine is more close to a minute, unless using a third party app, then I need to specify, for my use I have it set to 5 minutes which seems to work fine for my home.
@@HouseDadLife No, it was not a bad unit (BTW, my house is zoned so I have 2 thermostats and tested both of them). It was actually confirmed by their engineering group. They support averaging because it a sensor gets hit by a cold draft (exterior door openning) it would skew the reading. WIth my 3 remotes, it would average it anyway. FYI - there is no was to get a "raw" reading as all results are averaged: what is on the display as well as what is in the log files.. The best way is to compare it relative to a digital thermometer. If you want to run a quick test to confirm the 20-30 minute delay do this. Take a remote and tape it to the outlet of your HVAC, and compare the readings to your digital thermometer. You will see the lag in reporting. I could send you a raph of my output if you wish. PM me.

@HouseDadLife I am experiencing this as well. When the heater runs, all other thermometers at home measures 23 deg while ecobee is still at 19.5. When heater turns off, the ecobee temperature still rises up to 23 deg after almost an hour. Then when the temp inside the house goes down to around 18 deg (based on my other meters), the ecobee is still at 21 deg. This delay is too long. Is there any system setting that i need to change? Thanks
@@MaynardGasFindIR nope, it is not a setting issue. They purposely set the delay in the software. It’s a problem. Venstar does not have that issue.

Glad you enjoyed, at the present time, I did find a workaround using hubitat, but since I started using hubitat I've found using modes and logic based temperature controls in the house have given me everything I was after. There is a hubitat modes video on this channel that will explain more. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

Can you set it so it heats to 75 but once it’s hit 75 it won’t come on again to heat up to 75 until it drops down to 70? I hate when you heat up to 75 and it comes on at 74 basically going off and on every 10 to 15 minutes.
You can change this in the settings page / thresholds, you're looking for heat differential temperature. Change this to a much lower value, your system will end up running more often but for less time.

If you set it at 73 heat does it heat up to 74 and then turn off and come back on at 73? My old Honeywell did that it was +-1 degree and I liked it. I recently installed a nest and i hate it. The swing is way too high and hardly ever turn on. Was wondering if ecobee would be just like my Honeywell thermostat
This is totally customizable, you can make it whatever you like. I have mine set to stay within .5 of a degree but you have set it differently if you prefer.
Is there any difference between ecobee and ecobee lite?
I changed from nest to ecobee due to nest being a POS and not coming with a common wire adapter like ecobee did my furnace kept power cycling and clicking relays I switched to ecobee smart with sensors and problem solved
I haven't missed my nest at all. My only regret was not finding it sooner. The included adapter is a real bonus!
@@HouseDadLife might I add this was installed by our electric company as a free incentive and they still failed to realize the importance of a C wire I did the ecobee myself
From what I understand the Nest power cycles the fan to leach power for itself if it doesn't have the C wire. The Ecobee actually came with the adapter in case you don't have the C wire to let if function properly. Impressed.
Yea I gave my nest to my parents I got it for free so eh haha but glad I got the ecobee my furnace doesn't sound like it's short circuiting anymore or trying to relight itself over and over... Also nest wanted to try and run my furnace for 8 hours straight..... Hence why it was having trouble charging
I ended up just selling my Nest, it's really just a Honeywell with an app.
I am switching from the Nest to the Ecobee because the Nest will no longer connect to WiFi. Nest was going to send me a new unit but then they said it was out of warranty. I researched and this is a known issue with the Nest thermostat. I'm done with Nest products.

You can set the ecobee this way, I can't remember if you can do this with the nest. I have to ecobee set to have my ideal temperature for sleep to the sensor in my bedroom for example.
I brought the voice activated ecobee over the nest learning thermostat. Small house 1300 sq ft.

Any idea how sensitive the motion sensors are to pets that are home all day?? Cats/dogs?
We do have a dog that's home and it's doesn't seem to effect them. I have my sensors about 4 high.
The sensors are a bit useless. If you adjust the thermostat setting, then the Ecobee stops using the programmed sensors and only uses the Thermostat's local temperature. I purchased the Ecobee because my home office would get warm and the Ecobee let me put a sensor in office to keep it cool. The location of my thermostat can be several degrees cooler than the office. If it gets too warm and I turn down the thermostat temperature by 1 degree, it can actually make the office hotter since it starts using the thermostat temperature and stops using the programmed sensor in the office. I've discussed this with Ecobee multiple times and they believe that is somehow logical operation, and not a bug. I've had to stop using my remote sensors because of this.
Look into webcore, it was the only way I could solve what I wanted to do. Use the furnace fan to regulate preset temperature automatically. I also have a plant room sensor which gets ignored for these operations.

When I figured out the problem and Ecobee had no interest in fixing it, I disabled the sensors and set up a RaspberryPi and thermistor in the office, and was controlling the thermostat temperature by sending web requests to IFTTT (which no longer free). That Pi got repurposed and I became the control unit that manually makes the temp change requests, just like the old Honeywell thermostat except I can make these temperature changes using my cell phone.
I did the ifttt for a bit too, it was okay, I love webcore, it's become such a good solution and it works flawlessly once you have it set up.
Just an FYI. The first 2 min into your video, all that features are pre programmed or built into your mother board furnace already. It’s all due to safety. How I know, I’m HVAC schooling atm.
Some are available through dip switches that is correct, although the second stage went on way to soon leading to hot spots in the home, setting the second stage to be controlled by the ecobee has lead to a much more balanced temperature throughout the house, and some savings.

@@HouseDadLife how do I make the TRV call for heat? If I want a room to heat up and the TRV changes the radiator temp to what I want, what turns my boiler on? Right now my ecobee does. But if the TRV changes to 70 degrees but the boiler doesn't turn on then it was pointless.
It looks like smart things supports the tuya thermostats, so if you're a bit tech savvy you could make this work using webcore. If you're new to webcore it does take a bit to get it going but I prefer using that to run home automation because it's reliable and free.
@@jwill9877 With Webcore you could make a routine that turns on the boiler anytime a TRV calls for heat. Since I already have webcore set up this is the way I would run it.

I'm totally not clear on that last part...whats the issue with this "Hold" feature? Please explain...
If you control the ecobee from any smart device, the thermostat goes into a hold, instead of continuing to follow any preset programs. Currently, my hubitat resumes the program for me.
@@HouseDadLife that seems really strange, there should be a resume logic function...no? Otherwise it sorta breaks the entire device.
Amen, exactly why I call it lazy programming. It's the only negative thing I have to say about the thermostat, but it's a big negative.
@@HouseDadLife while I wait for my Ecobee to be delivered, I checked around and there seems to be plenty of options for settings that resume your scheduled programming after you've manually adjusted the temperature temporarily. It'll at least either let you adjust the hold time for manual changes, or just hold until next scheduled event.
These settings definitely exist, and from their app it works, but if you run an automation, it always ends up in a permanent hold for me that needs to be removed.

So the Learning on the nest didn't work for me either, returning.

I think I ran an additional 3 wires for ecobee. Keep in mind with nest you'll need a power wire as well otherwise it cycles your fan to charge its own battery.
I want to like the Ecobee. But it’s too much for me. I don’t need all these features. Nest is just simple for simple people. Ecobee is great for people who want precise control. I don’t have my furnace running all the time so something basic is all I need.
Nest would work well if you're looking for something basic, but then why not get the old style spin thermostat. Basic control with wifi, ease of use, yeah Nest should be a good fit.
I have an Ecobee 3 Lite ...cant even understand most of it ! ...Just heat the house when i want and cool it when i want
There is a bunch of ways to customize it, it can seem a bit tricky but if there is something you need help with don't hesitate to contact ecobee support, they are great.

The Nest “learning” feature is awful. It makes its mind up quickly and will NEVER let you change habits. I was forced to turn that feature off, finally. Nest only works with Google stuff, which has many other problems. I am running away from the Nest.
I couldn't agree more with you. Ecobee isn't perfect, I think it could be a final solution but they don't add simple features, adding Hubitat to control based on logic that works in our home has completely satisfied my needs.

I appreciate this video but I def disagree… I miss my nest after going to ecobee. The learning feature worked flawlessly and I am beyond annoyed at home the ecobee doesn’t allow for near the amount of small changes throughout the day I make in my routine with temperatures. I don’t want just home, away, and sleep. I’m def in the camp that the Nest is the superior thermostat.
