@@tylerquarterman8571I don’t think 4 adults in a Cessna 170 would be much fun for Xyla given center of gravity and weight limitations. That plane was designed for 2 adults and 2 kids.
@@noobhunter3000 true but the outrageous level of saturation that RSL had has thankfully dies back and at least, unlike Better help is not going to do you any real harm! For about 34 years I’ve obsessively reinvented my organizational systems and processes to improve my productivity, trying manage many different tool chains, materials, disciplines, and my chaotic mind. I always wanted all things at my disposal, quick to find at any moment. Recently I gave up that requirement, now I have a small subset of things I need frequently and immediately, I keep that as small and simple as possible. That can be changed as required. The bulk of stuff I keep stored away. Instead of having an index of thousands of parts or tools, organized like a library, i keep my organization system minimal, putting like-things together intuitively, in boxes. On the occasion that I need a specific part, it’s fine to sort thru that box and find it. I don’t need that part every day. I’ve been overthinking and overengineering my work processes for most of my life, I think I’ve finally tamed the chaos. Anyway I also love how Laura thinks and solves problems like this. It makes such a difference to do all this with such artistry. A workshop can be a work of art in itself.
I devised a system based on what I use the most and having all my tools visible on the wall. I wanted to reduce the amount of drawers I needed to open. Granted, I don't have to go anywhere with my tools and my amount of extra stuff (screws/bolts/etc) is pretty minimal. The main thing I build are guitars. So I have a single workbench where on either side I have my router and other handheld tools in between the legs of the workbench. In the middle are five drawers. The top two are for stuff I always use (highest is screws, bench doggies, specific guitar hand tools you only need for one part of the build), the next one is for guitar hardware (every project has its place, although this drawer is a bit of a mess), the next two are for guitar parts that are semi or completely finished (neck/body) and the lowest one is once again for tools but mostly stuff I rarely use. This setup has been amazing so far. I've been using it for about four years. I think the only thing I might change is that I have two rolls of 220 and 400 grit sand paper in the lowest drawer and I use that quite a bit. But so far it hasn't bugged me enough.
This was a really useful video, thank you. My studio is much more yarn, paint, paper, etc. but seeing you work though your system for the system for the system unlocked a couple of things I have been stuck on with how to organise my space. Thanks!
I also am a textile and paper person and would love to hear any tips you have on how you keep your stuff organized! I often feel like I am drowning in raw materials or have to spend 40 minutes just clearing a space to do work on before I can ever start a project 😅
@@meganmccarthy8114 so far I have built a Trello board with one list per storage unit, and a card for each shelf on that storage unit. The physical shelves are labelled with a code that corresponds to the card on Trello. So for example, Big Ivar Shelf 1* has code BI1 on a masking tape label on the front of the shelf. I have a list called Big Ivar, and a trello card called BI1. Inside that card there's a bullet point list of what's in that shelf. *IKEA Ivar shelves. I've decided that it doesn't matter if the boxes are not the same size or pretty. If the weaving yarn fits in a leftover cardboard box that I can write "Weaving Yarn" on, that's got to be good enough. On the Trello board I also have a list of important items to keep track of, like where the peg loom and Crop-O-Dile are stored, and so those items have their locations on their own card cos I got sick of losing tools right when I wanted them. I'm going to try picking one type of craft for a 3 month period, and set the studio up for that. So in January I want to do some sewing, I'll get the fabrics out of the loft, and the sewing machine from the wardrobe. At the moment the system is mostly theoretical, as I haven't been able to do the organising due to prior commitments, but I'm hoping I'll get time this year😂 I think my biggest takeaway from the video was needing a system for the system, and I like Trello for how easy it is to reorganise the digital system when the physical system changes, or use the digital system to mock up the physical one.
Always here for the Simone Giertz crossover episodes. Loved the build montage too. For those who, like me, really liked the music during the montage, the song is "Give You Up" by Daniel Fridell & Sven Lindvall.
Wow, awesome build Laura! Being able to go from zero to hero with a new CNC system and actually produce a super functional template for production is absolutely amazing! Equally amazing is having a Simone Giertz with said CNC!

After just getting my own CNC, I am definitely on the lookout for ways in which to use it to either make things themselves, or help me make things to make things. Thanks for the inspiration! (And also glad you and Simone are close now, so you get to hang out a lot more. You two are awesome together on video!)
does a Laura / Simone colab start with hours of zoom meetings and planning , or does one of you just show up at the others house like " hey wanna do a video ? i sort of have an idea ? " i also thought the point of a cnc was to give it a job and walk away, not stand there silently judging it for taking so long lol
Nice clean up montage Laura, the Festool vacuum vs corn broom is a fun contrast. Great to see Solid works has an affordable option now for hobby usage now.
Yep, I use Autodesk Fusion for my private CNC projects but for that price I'm definitely going to check out this Solidworks version. It's always good to have alternatives.
Believe it or not, I'm making the EXACT SAME THING right now ! 😅 (today !) Except the boxes are empty... I'm still between step 1 (having stuff laying around everywhere) and step 2 (carboard boxes with stuff sorted by "if it fits in there"). You moved from step 3 (nicely sorted stuff in labelled boxes but the things you need are always in the box at the bottom of the pile) to step 4 ! 👏 I make it smaller, and on wheels. For under my desk, and it makes an additional little table. (that fits right under the desk so I HAVE to clean it every time !)
Thanks for the great videos! Im glad to hear Smudo is doine well. Would it be possible for me to get a paper copy of your template for your Tanos storage system?
I love watching CNC machines create things; they remind me of the pen plotters we used to use before colour laser printers became generally affordable. There's something very relaxing about seeing them pick up a pen from the carousel, draw with it, then return the pen to the carousel and the carousel rotating to allow access to a different pen. 3/4/5/6-axis CNC machines that can produce complicated 3D shapes are especially fascinating. 3D printers are interesting as well, although less so as they tend to take a relatively long time to produce objects.
Great video! Love the motown style music. Sounds like a real band. interesting how the color changes so much between your studio and simone's. Maybe you used her camera? Cool project!
Lots of fun, this one. Since you plan to use the template again and again, an idea for an upgrade could be to insert some metal sleeves into the holes to prevent them from expanding.
Heh, the Illy coffee can is an ever-present storage solution in my home as well. Those tins are worth their weight in gold! The coffee is very good as well
This might not be possible but could you and Simone come up with a “third hand”. I was struggling to install a ceiling light fan, the task was technically easy but trying to hold the light/fan above my head while connecting wires etc., nearly broke me. Fun to see you two again 😊
I resonate with Simone’s injured finger. I’m constantly cutting or smashing my fingers. Currently, I have bandages on both thumbs. The left is a rather bad cut right on the tip, into the fingernail, I’m afraid a little piece of my thumb tip is actually going to fall off, so I’m dealing with it by keeping it covered and not looking at it too closely. The other thumb isn’t nearly as bad, just some split skin, but it was feeling left out so I put a bandage on it, too.
A system for your system. I thought about it for a few seconds and then the logic hit me like a ton of bricks 😅 And also how things having a place to store them makes cleaning up easy but also always makes me wonder how it got that far. But then I remember Adam’s rule about horizontal surfaces 😅
Adam Savage's "sortimo" system used standard soft close, ball bearing slides with sheet metal trays as the standard unit, this allows the systainer to be pulled out full length & left in place with lid tilted up, doesn't need to be carted to a flat space. You could put in a few pull out shelves for holding the systainers in use to mimic that. It's one of the cleverer features he identified that helps keep clutter under control in real time
inevitably, every Simone collab will include a scene where the two of you are laughing so hard you cease to function. The mark of a good friend. 😊😊
