I’m 69 years old. More than 50 years ago an old carpenter I worked under recommended that tape measure to me. I was a newbie and did as he recommended. Over the years I’ve tried countless other tape measures and have found none as good as that small Stanley. Back in the day there used to be carpentry tables and information printed on the back of the tape but sadly no more. Tried to order your tape holder but sold out in less than ten days. I have obsessed over tape measures for more than 50 years guess that makes me a nerd. Thanks for the entertaining video. You make nerdy content entertaining.

You've got a few years head start on me, but, same boat. The Stanley tapes are well made and well designed. My only regret is sometimes the dual tapes with metric and imperial are hard to find, when one's been misplaced or stolen.

I have lost so many tape measures because of the clip location on my tool bags. I use Veto tool bags for work, and they are without a doubt the best bags ever made. However, the tape measure clips is right below the bags carrying strap. Every time I pick up my bag, the strap hooks under the tape and pops it off onto the ground, and bye-bye tape measure. I believe your product would solve that problem.

    • @mhzprayer
      @mhzprayer 10 місяців тому +1

Actually one more thing the notch can do. If you're trying to align two screws on a wall vertically, you can put the first screw in the wall and then hang the tape from it as a plumb line to get the perfect location for the second screw.
pull tape down to the length where you want the lower screw to go. Let it dangle and gently touch the tape measure until its standing perfectly straight up on the wall, not leaning. Mark the wall on both sides of the hanging tape, then remove it and put your screw between the two marks.

I kept a tape measure clipped to my pocket at hip level or in the tool belt when I wore one. Never seemed to be a problem, except that that spot on the pocket needed reinforcing from time to time. Still enjoyed this video, as I always enjoy Laura's enthusiasm for the creative process.

Same here, never even came to my mind to actually put in on a belt, since it would be so awkward to use. Pocket edge is much more convenient, though it can of course still drop from there and really does eventually break the pocket fabric, hence this product could be helpful

Totally agree, I just slightly spread the clip and wear on my pants pocket. Been doing it for years . Never had an issue. Never on my belt . 🤷🏽‍♂️The magnet thing is impractical. Just gimmicky . Even with her or anyone fabricating , grinding metal , it would have a tendency to attract and pick up sharp shavings etc. , just what a person wants to be grabbing on to. Let alone having all that extra just for a clip. This is like one of those infomercial things that a person would buy then end up tossing aside. Funny thing is she will probably sell anyway . I like most of her content, but some of it is just a stretch in making great content for views and likes which I understand. I did watch the whole video trying to keep an open mind.

As a Cabinet Maker I use a tape measure all day long. In fact I ALWAYS carry one round with me so I can measure wherever I am in the workshop as my tape measure is always with me. I even forget I'm wearing it and often take it home by mistake, still clipped on. I use a Hultafors UM3ME as I'm left handed and the clip IS ON THE CORRECT SIDE. Unlike almost every other tape measure I know of. So how do I clip it on without it getting in the way? Very easy. It doesn't clip to my belt, it clips to my POCKET TOP. Super simple, super convenient, no alterations or modifications necessary. I also carry a vernier caliper in my back pocket and a pen (biro) and pencil in my front pocket for marking. All day long. I can go anywhere in the workshop and measure and mark out, without having to 'play fetch' for tools.
Okay, so my pocket top does get worn eventually (jeans/camo trousers) and the tape wouldn't clip to light fabric shorts or trousers without pockets. I'm in the workshop, I dress appropriately. And once the pocket top is worn, it's probably time to get new trousers anyway. The alternative, which I have done before is to get a small leather belt pouch to hold said tools. Either/or. both as good as the other.
Personally I think the holder strap you've come up with is an interesting idea. But for me it's just not necessary. You show how the tape hangs in the strap right over your pocket top, so why not just clip it there? After all who wants a big bulky dangly strap hanging off your tape when you're trying to get accurate measurements at the panel saw for instance? Don't want to pour cold water on a good bit of lateral thinking, but for me the strap is an 'overkill' when there's a simple solution in front of you.

I think I've always clipped it to my pants pocket, not my belt; it's uncomfortable to sit down with it on your belt. But even clipped to the pocket, it tends to slip off when you sit down. I think having the bit of strap will help a lot.

    • @sam_millen
      @sam_millen 10 місяців тому +1

The pocket is the area that makes most sense, as it can be easily slid on and off one handed. Clipping off and off the belt is an extra layer of hassle and also uncomfortable when sitting down.

This is awesome. MK2 version should include two magnets. One as shown and another to attach to the tape measure with a metal plate on the outside of the strap. Or Vice Versa which actually makes more sense so you can use two magnets if the tape is in the loop. Easy on, easy off option if you don't want to unclip each time you need to. It then becomes dual featured and a truly one handed design if required.

Own a bunch of the old Stanley LeverLocks. Served well doing construction carpentry. Their squared off shape sometimes helps in taking inside measures. Take a beating too. PowerLocks are good too. Have a couple of those as well. Much prefer the former though.
    Suggestions:
The ‘belt clip’ is best used for clipping it to a pocket on your tool belt. If you’re constantly using it, that can actually be handier than keeping it in the pocket. The times I’ve clipped one of these to a regular belt I could count on one hand.
11:13 - Magnetize your screwdriver, then it can pick up, place, and screw.
11:44 - If you’ve a lot of boxes to fold for packing, screw blocks to your work surface so that you can just press the flat carton down and it will quickly fold without fumbling and stay that way.

Some are different models from Stanley, some are no-name brands I bought at a drugstore here in the US (Walgreens), and one is a Reekon that I bought as a kickstarter supporter. The problem I have with all of them is I don't use them often enough to clip to my clothing in any way, so they get lost in the house on those occasions when I am doing projects.
Sometimes they get left in the tool bag (which is really where they should go), sometimes they get put down somewhere and then I don't remember where I put them down, etc....
I don't think you can fix my poor memory. But it is interesting to watch your solution that works well for you, and which seems similar to what some professional pool players use for their chalk.

Laura talking about how there's maybe possibly 50 people who might want this. Cue 50 items selling out in a matter of minutes. ;) Very cool idea as someone who has also always struggled in one way or another with this indispensable tool.

Very clever idea. Traditionally, many carpenters wore a belt with tool hangers and/or nail pouches (in the days before drills and screws for fastening), and that belt went *over* the jacket. Today you might wear a belt with a holster for a cordless screw or impact driver over your jacket.
The clip clipped onto that outer belt (or in the nail pouch).
Also, in Canada many of our tape measures have both Imperial AND metric markings on them!

As I was watching this video, i realized my phone was resting up against my 30’ Stanley Powermax 😂.
Nice design Laura! Professional Foresters and Loggers have been wearing tapes with clips on them for years…see the Spencer Logger Tape.

I very much like the idea and process. Im kinda in a differant situation so for now i just have a tape everywhere. So for now, 5 are at hand. One at each working table. And a few more in several toolboxes. Thanks for the great idea !

So I am no maker. But I have known a ton of folks who have never liked the belt clips on those. For all sorts of different reasons. But that is freaking genius idea!
And as someone who is into tabletop gaming of all kinds. That would be brilliant for the different miniature wargames also!

I usually clip the tape measure to my pocket. I also use an Occidental pouch (OCC5522) that gives me easy access to the tape measure, flashlight, box cutter, and pencil. This pouch can attach to your toolbelt by clip or loop. I usually wear the belt over my coat or overalls. Occidental also makes a tool vest that is popular with forklift operators who are always getting on and off the machine.🇨🇦

Very nice. I loved the time you attached a pencil-sharpener to your tape measure, since you would so often need a sharp pencil to mark your measurements. Now if this gadget had that AND a slot for a short pencil, it would be perfect.

This reminds me of when I made prototype tablet stands for a computer lab I was working in. Saved the other test engineers time from having to carefully hoist the test device to do testing they could do standing on the angled surface. Also opened room to put more tablets per bench since all the cabling could be managed more traditionally, instead of being splayed out.

Thanks for showing how to make your simple, functional tape holder. I've been keeping my work tape in my pocket because I dislike the clip on the back so much. I copied your idea to fit my 6' tape now my coworkers are jealous.

I grew up on my dad's construction sites and he went through a ton of tape measures. He would lose them in the truck all the time. Since he had his shirt tucked in he would always hook it to his belt but since I didn't wear a belt I would hook it to my pocket

Hi! Laura and Co! You story stick is similar to what is called a “Ridsestok” in Danish (don’t know the english or German word). It’s made as part of you examination as a Cabinetmaker (Møbelsnedker) and is a straight piece of wood where mark all the different measurements up on it for you piece of furniture. The you use it to check your measurements while you work and when the piece of furniture is done your Examinator can use it to check the precision of your work. The stick doesn’t contain any numbers, it only has set distances and a little text that explains what is what. This is the way you use to make furniture and woodwork in general. No measurements needed ;) you don’t need a measuring tape, you just need a stick and a pen :)

    Hi Laura,
I usually use a rivet gun for magnets if the material is thin. Shoot it from the back and the rivet will fill out the cavity. Add a washer on the back like you already did. You solved an annoying problem. I will copy this if I cant get one of yours. Danke.
