I was watching your video on my phone, when my granpa (96-year-old italian woodworker) passed by and peeked over my shoulder: he said that your idea was very cool and well executed!
Hey Laura, just seeing the wildfires outside of LA and the situation looks absolutely horrendous. I hope you and your family are safe. Holding good thoughts for all of you!
Hope you and your family and your new house are all safe. Please post a short, if and when you can, just to reassure your anxious fans that you are ok.
I think the "im not happy with it let's try again" is an important part of life. Too many ppl settle, and its not worth it. Its beautiful. Walnut is my favourite!
May I suggest that if you don’t have already and it sounds good to you, that you create a custom wood burning stamp to “sign” your creations, especially for the furniture. Maybe even several with different specifics like location and “personal collection” for additional identification. May have minimal importance or value today but I expect these items to become generational and significance may be quite different with passed time.
Think big Laura. This will be the start of your Design Company. Be prepared! ‘Branding’ your ‘free range furniture’ (I think that’s funny) will be a good way to indicate 1) It’s your design, 2) You built it, 3) Where you built it, 4) When you built it, 5-?) style name & number, line name, etc… The labels that furniture companies used to put on furniture eventually got damaged so they were sometimes impossible to read or lost all together.
When I first saw the floor, I just cringed! I could FEEL how cold it was on my feet in the morning. Then I remembered I'm in Canada and you're in California, and it changed everything. Lol
Love the design. One little thing. When there is no air circulation underneath the mattress, you have a change of mold under your matress caused by the humidity of the matress
@@VeretenoVids I had a box spring on the floor with a mattress on top, so a lot of air flow in theory, but we got mold on the floor beneath and on the underside of the mattress. So slats don't help if the outer frame is closed.
well out here in So Cal the damp is in the winter/spring when it is cool so not all year but it would be easy to remedy that with some small feet on the frame to echo the little benches from last week no more then 2" tall (smaller better) on the corners and in the middle Maybe add a small board inside to support the long matters supports. prototypes are always problem solving exercises Forward!!
I just love this design, and its potential to be easily collapsible and placed in a box! Move in move out ready. On to the next home! Well done Laura!!
May I suggest when using the dry joint method of using dowels that you take a tip from timber frameing techniques and use an offset punch to mark the drill position for the hole through the Domino, this will give you an offset hole so that when you hammer the dowel through it will snug the joint up giving you a firmer fixing.
It's refreshing to see you say "nope. Don't like it. Let's do another one." I like that you're not so attached to something just because you made it. Sometimes the design on paper doesn't work out in reality. I really like this design. I may make my own version. Your unique connection with dowells is rad.
so much to say . . . the wood even as you cut it looks amazing. The time and effort you put into each step shows and you can tell this is your calling. Making something not so easy look like a piece of cake rocks too. Just amazing work
Challenge: make a piece of NICE and not basic furniture with minimal tools, stuff that an average household has. Which are a handheld drill, electric hand saw and sanding machine and then just non-electric low cost tools. For relatability and so that I can make it too :D
I don't have your training or experience, but we (my husband and I) are building our own house anyway! One thing I love about you and have found very inspiring and empowering is your clarity about what you do and don't want, as well as your willingness to try, "fail" (according to whatever standard you have set) and then just do things over if you don't like something you've created. There's just so much spaciousness in your way of being around creating. I have always been hobbled by this intense perfectionism and harsh critique of myself. I feel like I'm really learning from you how to weave play, lightheartedness and joy into creating❣ It's like your way of approaching things is, "Go for it because you can't really f-ck it up, and if you do so what? Just start over and try again another way!" No judgement or heavy critique. Just creativity, trying, learning/assessing, adjusting and playing with it some more. I just LOVE that about you and the way you work. Grateful I found your channel. PS ~ Smoodle looks like he's doing great! I'm so glad.
Hey! Dein zweiter Ansatz gefällt mir sehr gut.
I LOVE seeing you build furniture! You have a fantastic eye, and it's beautiful seeing you light up when you talk about building other things. I can tell it means a lot to you :)
Starting to be a proper American Woodworker :) : 3 car garage, at least 7 different Festool Products featured, SawStop and PowerMatic, TiteBond3, brad nails in air gun. I only missed a speedsquare, a pickup truck, kreg jigs and some inch calculations on the list ;) Keep it up. Always enjoyed your videos.
I used to have a business idea for a membership wood shop (like a gym) but found that there would never be enough insurance to cover idiots who wanted to retire on a huge insurance settlement.
@@kathrynwitte3398 You make a great point! I would never actually ask a craftsman to share there shop with me. That is too personal. I'm jealous that Laura has such a fine shop and skills to match. I have a tiny, limited shop with skills to match.
Beautiful! Starting over served you well. Nice to see the "new" joinery again, I'm calling it Kampftischlerei™ 🙂 Happy new year Laura, to you, your family, and your wonderful community of makers and makerfans. Hope 2025 is a super one!! (edit) hope you enjoyed your neon workshop, hope more there'll be a video of it!
Hello Laura, I have been watching you for a little while and you have good working skills. You have built some amazing articles. Keep up the good work.
The biggest win here was your decision to start the project over from scratch. It took a lot of courage, but it was so worth it. The end result looks fantastic. And congratulations on your marriage!
I'm glad you changed the design! I'm taking your idea for the blue pencil lead. Great idea! (New for me) The new design reminds me for some reason of a canoe. I like the curves and walnut/light coloured wood combination. Thank you for sharing Laura!
How great would it be if you could make all of your furniture with recycled, quality hard woods, as you did with the benches. You have the skills so it would be a waste to not get the maximum benefit out of them by creating the best quality pieces made with the best quality woods. It would probably take a few years or months to search out flea markets, second hand stores and the like to source enough materials, but you seem to have the time. Good luck.
I would have used some small legs hiden behind the frame that lifts it off the ground for better vantilation. Especially with the carpet, the airflow will be pretty restricted and the whole point of a slatted frame is ventilation to the matress.
Looks great, but one potential issue: the mattress won't get any airflow with it sitting all the way to the floor along all the edges like that, which can lead to moisture issues over time. Other than that, it looks great, and I love the simplicity of the design!
@@victoriabaker4400 but the air is boxed in. the frame is flush with the floor and the mattress. It traps air in and can mold. It doesnt have to, but the potential is there. compared to the older design and first try, both only used boxed and had a lot of airflow
I like the design....beautiful, and if you get creaky and start getting stuck halfway up? Well, there's a creaky genius who probably has already thought of how to make it all taller!
You forgot chairs, chairs and more chairs 😁 BTW, I've once seen in a book a chair design that is flat pack, easy to dismantle and uses only slip joints.

Judicious use of the Kampf Konnector. Love it!
Laura my suport about LA fires. I follow you since lots of years and you inspire me a lot. You and your famiky have my suport from barcelona.

Hello from Vancouver Island🏝️
Love the design. One little thing. When there is no air circulation underneath the mattress, you have a change of mold under your matress caused by the humidity of the matress
But it's on slats and on a tile floor so surely there will be air circulation. Plus they live in a dry environment.
@@VeretenoVids I had a box spring on the floor with a mattress on top, so a lot of air flow in theory, but we got mold on the floor beneath and on the underside of the mattress. So slats don't help if the outer frame is closed.

mattress not matters
@@VeretenoVids do you know how much liquid a person loses in his sleep. Thats al going in de mattress.
I hope that all is well with you and your family during this terrible time of these unbelievable fires.

I am watching the L.A. fires spread and hoping and praying you and your family are safe. Please let us know when you're able.
I hope you aren't affected by the fires. Please stay safe.
I appreciate that you showed your first attempt.
I was wondering how many projects it would take before Laura showed how much lower quality US plywood is from what she's used to.
Loving the simplicity, my concern is the lack of airflow. Hopefully humidity isn't an issue.
May I suggest when using the dry joint method of using dowels that you take a tip from timber frameing techniques and use an offset punch to mark the drill position for the hole through the Domino, this will give you an offset hole so that when you hammer the dowel through it will snug the joint up giving you a firmer fixing.
