- Hey guys we're back with this Defender 90! In this series we're showing you how we swap a 2.4 TDCI for a BMW X5 Engine!
In today's episode we finally get this engine running!! Leon stayed late to get this vehicle to where it needs to be and we encounter yet more problems....

Why oh why do people always say 'LS Swop'? I mean why?
Its not the best engine by any means and its a big old Yank gas guzzler. Passable if you want to shove a big SUV down a straight road but here in the UK? Sorry wrong. So very wrong.
This was a brilliant engine swop and showed a deep understanding of both the Defender and the BMW engines because you chose the RIGHT BMW engine. Not every BMW engine is so good so people need to be careful. N47 and N57 anyone?
So yes next time do an RR conversion with this engine but keep it classy, sublime and powerful to befit the car and a less noisy exhaust with no engine burps.
So the question is how much would a BMW engine conversion cost from yourselves drive in drive out? 🤔

Do it (classic with the td6 (m57) engine). This is awesome, loved that engine in the L322- awesome job guys
You did a hell of a job to get this beast running! Very well done guys. Love basically all you did in this conversion except the exhaust system. Like you said it’s just to loud and making the vehicle scream like a crazy race car. Sound is not only volume. I would connect a conversion of a Defender like this with a deep growling, more calm sound underlining it’s power and not this screaming sound which disqualify the car to use it as a daily driver in my opinion. 😎👍
WOAH!!!! Lovvve how still the engine idles and sounds a little more rounded with that crackle at high revs! I got such a buzz watching this! Mega result, thanks guys! :)
Sounds like a gasoline engine but i think your final drive is too short, engine peaks too early, you need a taller final drive for better overall top speed.
A little surprised by the sound the BMW lump, but really happy how the team persevered with the build. Probably the best engine work you have done on the channel. Next up should be a BMW twin scroll six pot petrol conversion.

How do the 6 speed boxes hold up to extra power 5 speeds dont last with a tuned td5 so dread to think how the bmw would kill them
Please do the M57 into a Disco 3, so many broken TDV6 one's, plus you haven't done any dico stuff 😃
Awesome, as you say, perfect engine for a swap…LS swap and you’ve got a brave pill to swallow when it comes to fuel consumption .

Suspect the best way around getting the right engine would be to buy a complete donor car in the first place….that way it’d allow you to test the engine whilst in running gear…may save some labour efforts later on.
RRC conversion with an auto box would definitely be of interest..!!

That's the only future in Defender engine swaps long-term IMO.
One of the cleanest swap ever. So close to a assembly line product.

I like your work, however, it is beyond my comprehension why fit a BMW or a GM engine to a Land Rover. If I want a BMW engine I buy a BMW. To me it makes more sense to modify or upgrade the Land Rover engine. I guess everyone has his own preference.

Did you ever do anymore of these? Was it just the 3in bore that made it slightly too loud for your liking? 2.5 fix it?
How did you get the x5 engine with the bigger bell housing to fit the gearbox? I can only find adaptors to fit the older m57s.

Love it .. wasnt happy with my 530D but the map you can do on these is crazy 😜 also check the lugs on the vacuum pump on end of cam .. mine broke the lugs and I had no brakes ..at speed
I've enjoyed every moment of this clip Sam. You guys have did a fantastic job- j enjoyed the trouble shooting most; having watched Project M57, I knew the fuel pump would be possible cause of the cranking problem.
You however didn't specify the BMW engine you mounted- I'm assuming that it's the DM57 married to the 6speed LT gearbox right? I'm about to do the same with my 300TDI. Right after I find a buyer for my kidney 😁😁

What are the specs for those tyres
The classic range Rover do it with an automatic one keep it automatic you should have more room in there anyway what do you do for petrol do a V8 one of the X5 into the range Rover classic with the autobox as well

What's the weight difference between the M57 engine and the old LR unit please?
Just catching up on these videos and you should definitely do a RRC auto with this engine. Keep it quiet and refined though!

Now you can really dial into the motor, the laugh is, you wont think it was a diesel. Because it doesn't sound like one. But to me you and pals should not have had to go through the messing about due to others not doing the job at their end properly. The loom etc should have been done properly for you, rather than you having to hide plugs etc, that are not needed. You paid more than enough!

Great job that.. 👍 Any chance of a Disco 2 build( not BMW engine swap) TD5 set up for off-roading. 2-4” lift , steel bumpers, winch, wheels and tyres, engine mods/ tuning. I bet a load of guys who watch your vids have a Disco 2 , like me. Cheers 👍

I know UK prices might differ to AUS but is it a lot more to swop to the BMW engine vs the 2:4 ford engine?

I'm not sure if you're aware but in South Africa the Defender was available with a 2.8 litre petrol BMW engine straight from the factory in the late 1990s. You can identify them by a "2.8i" marking where you would otherwise see "TDi" or "V8". I've not driven one but apparently they are great and of course very rare now.

Absolute Mutts Nuts!!!! Those M57 as so silky smooth and mated to the manual is a perfect combination. Didn't the RR when owned by BMW use a BMW Auto Box or LR's own one??? 🤔🤔🤔
Next vehicle should be a defender 130 full airbagman plus portal axles, big wheels, m57n conversion.

Now do the merc swaps the OM605 OM606 and the common rail 3.2ltr I like the BMW swap but I think the merc swap sounds nicer and you can get a little bit more grunt easily

Looks like you can use conversion kits from ECC (link below), but might need to become certified installers… huge growing market (esp with London ULEZ) - would love to see you guys do a detailed series on something like this.

Sweet build- well worth the headaches! My ‘85 Ninety V8 SW will be pushing out 300 BHP when it’s done. Looking forward to it!
Done an M57 conversion to an E36 318TDS compact and the wiring was a pain in the backside. But i have since read that the LR boys have sorted that issue out with bespoke stand alonw looms etc. Thinking of doing thw conversion again, to a MK5 Cortina estate
Next time will be a lot easier first time with anything is the worst.

I appreciate it would be a lot easier said than done…and actually possibly impossible(?)….but if you could get a TDV8 to work in a classic (or defender for that matter) it would be amazing

how much ca cost good condition engine + swap :)?
swap out that steering damper to a OEM one or you'll forever feel the vehicle pulling one side
Correctly setup they don’t pull - the spring must be relaxed when the vehicles steering is centred - we did adjust it off camera as it initially pulled to the left, once adjusted a couple mm, it sits perfectly still and returns the steering wheel nicely to the centre 👍🏻
Sweet, well done persevering. Have you seen the MW Machines air intake kit, i can recommend it! I'm still driving around with the drivers window down in December listening to it haha

Awesome build, but with the remap I think you will find the fuel economy has dropped!!!
