- Land Cruiser Vs Land Rover, one of the most contentious rivalries in all of 4x4. This week we swap out the keys of our Troopy to hop behind the steering wheel of @NextMeridianExpedition Defender 110 and figure out the main difference between each platform.

How did we get here?
We're Cody and Olivia, an American couple from Oregon, who found a love for 4x4 driving and camping after we purchased a 3rd gen Toyota 4Runner. After exploring much of the American west in our 4Runner, we found our dream overland rig, a 1985 HJ75 Toyota Landcruiser Troopy, in Bend, Oregon. We plunged head first into fixing up and building out the Troopy with a lot of misadventures along the way. Finally in 2022, we realized we had an opportunity to live our dream of full-time overland travel. We quit our jobs, sold our house and all of our belongings, and set out on the road trip of a lifetime following the Pan-American Highway south to Ushuaia, Argentina.

That awkward moment when your friends let you borrow their vehicle and you break it right in front of them 😐 Has this ever happened to you??
Thanks for the fun time Nick & Mathilde!
Two legends of Overlanding. You are either a Troopy person or a Landrover person, but that should not stop you enjoying good times together like you guys have done!
I would absolutely love to do a comparison of a Defender from the same year as our Troopy. That would be a bit of a different story I think haha
@@gdayjambo the early Defenders have a different gear ratio in the transfer box so you get different power and torque bands which alter the drivability, generally you need to work them a little more in some scenarios but they are good. A real shame that Land Rover never offered the Defender in auto form other than a couple of V8 specials. Plenty of people have converted them though.
Super comparison.
You're right Cody - both vehicles are legends.
Toyota has an advantage with parts availability around the globe and perhaps a better reputation for reliability, but both makes have proven themselves in harsh conditions all over the world.
Happy trails to both teams.
They are both fun to drive. I would love to take an older Defender off road and see what it is like.
Great quality and entertaining video, also loved the conclusion: great wrap up, sounded super pro! Thank you!!
Thank you so much!
Good people. Thanks for sharing
I'm a Toyota guy, but the defenders look so cool!!
I think I would reather live in the Troupee over a long period of time, and especially in cold climates.
New friend here 8n the Philippines,it was an awesome rig swap ,so funny and interesting to follow,🤟👌💪💪💪🇵🇭
The Defender also boasts UN missions, and nearly 30 year service in the British, Netherlands and Australian Armies, to name a few. As well as mining industries worldwide, utility companies and more. Not just a romantic vehicle with a community behind it but a workhorse tried and tested, in wartime and civilian use.
Good comparison thanks
Glad you liked it
Parabolic leave springs😄 I thought you were still driving the original leave springs. No wonder it’s not such a big difference 👍
1:07 that defender door rattle
You're either a Land Rover person, OR a Toyota person. Your review makes it very clear you prefer your Toyota. I mean you should, you built it just the way you wanted it, but your entire review of the Defender was already decided before you even took the keys. To be honest I'm a Defender owner and if I was doing the same review, I'd be biased also.
When I worked for the USPS, one of the mail trucks ended up doing that... The only way I could get it to stop before I got back to the office was to hold the horn down on the steering wheel.
Once I got back they just pulled the fuse
Haha oh man, did it do it for the entire day?
@@gdayjambo luckily I wasn't too far away from the office but it was still about a half hour of having to really press in on the horn or else it was going off
C'mon Cody! You borrow a vehicle and something always breaks!
Haha this time it was legit not from anything I did.
I don't feel comfortable when someone tells me I destroyed something that I just drove 20 mins.
Finally got to wtch this! A nice balanced view of the Defender, even though you broke it! 😛 I'm a firm believer that setup makes or brakes the vehicle experience. The defender might have a little less power, but it's not power that you generally use, it's torque. It also has less, but it does have 6 gears so can utilise it better. As you might be able to tell from the profile pic, I'll be siding with the Defender! I'm part way through a full rebuild and initial setup for overlanding. 🙂
Thanks and good luck on the rebuild!!
Defender old I very good
1st!
That's funny itraded my defender for a Toyota. You loyal to yours , I know where I belong now
