Jon Batiste is a national treasure.
He is one of the very few truly beautiful people on the fringes of entertainment.
Meh
*global treasure! :)
dude his name is literally spelt in the title of the video. you're thinking of john the Baptist
@5:25 🥺
All the best to Jon and his wife. Good health to her please.
Bot! 👆 Ignore! Hope she, Jons wife, recovers quickly! ❤
Going to miss Jon over the summer. Best of health to his wife Suleika.

Jon has now convinced me that a hot dog is a sandwich, Forrest Gump is an action movie, and dude, you have changed the world. Much respect, my man

nope
I mean... He *was* at war...
A hot dog on a plate is not a sandwich. A hot dog on a bun is a sandwich.
@@joannesmith2484 nope
“Forrest Gump is to action movies as hot dog is to sandwich” … brilliant 😂
I liked Jon Batiste before this but my admiration for him has just now exponentially expanded. Impeccable taste in music and sandwiches.
And he has to be the sharpest looking man out there. He is beautiful.
@@hudson2861 couldn’t agree more! That lavender suit/brown shirt combination is 🔥

Combined with deep spirituality. Jon is a unique treasure of a person.
What a shining light Jon is. So happy for him and his success and the positivity he radiates to the world.
Vibes 😍😍😍
Yes👏🏼👏🏼🌞💗✌🏼
You're not so bad yourself
No need to add anything to that comment. It's perfect!
He is so positive in light of the fact that his his wife has leukemia. I’m sure that is why he has to take the summer off. I pray for her good health.
What an incredible human Jon is. He keeps his own peace while setting the best example for all of us. He makes my heart happy. And then there is his music. No words can describe the joy….
Jon is a ray of sunshine in a, quite often, dark and rainy world. All the best to him and his family.
“Trying to change the world” what a legend, doesn’t he know he already has 🙌
How has he changed the world?
Absolutely LOVE him!!! Such a sweet, humble, intelligent, philosophical, loving, humane man. We need more people in the world like him!
@@ji5454 exactly. I mean, he seems like a great guy, but how has he changed anything?
Absolutely ♥️♥️♥️
I love you Jon Batiste ♥️♥️♥️
Jon is an easy-going, extraordinarily talented, and fun-loving dude. But he's also a very complex, generous, spiritual, and thoughtful gentleman. And it's that dichotomy, which often goes unseen on The Late Show, that makes him the beautiful soul we all love.
Thank you, Jon, for being everything you are to all of the people in your life.
Yes. He inspires me to
Love louder no matter what
He's the exact opposite when he's speaking to when he performs. Such a juxtaposition.
Love that answer
That was the best set of answers that I've heard. Jon gave thoughtful consideration to each question and responded with honesty and integrity.
Jon is such a humble man despite his current status as one of the greatest musicians in the world. He's such a unique thinker as well. It's fascinating listening to him just talk about things. There's such a warmth emanating from him. Such a wonderful human being. We should all aspire to be like Jon Batiste. See the beauty in everything and take every moment as the gift that it is.
Jon and Suleika. Time together. Always the best decision. Hoping the bone marrow transfer is successful. Respect.
🙏absolutely
She received a bone marrow donation from her brother during her first battle with this cancer and it was successful. Hopefully this second transplant is the last one followed by a long, healthy life with Jon. Can't help but selfishly want this couple to continue to be able to bring their special brand of good to the world.
THIS!
Yeeessss!🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽❤
Such a beautiful human. He is music. His laugh is music. His talking is music. Gotta love Jon.
Well said
I agree. He is music.
Jon Batiste . . . fashioned from spun light and one of the most lovable people on the planet. 💫
Jon has such creative, thoughtful answers! Asking him about one favorite song is hilarious. It's like asking an avid reader to choose just one book.
It's going to be rough to be without Jon until September, but he deserves the break.

He's undoubtedly the suavest guy around.

No question .
Dear sweet soul that is Jon .. his soul has shaped and changed this world already !! As much as I will miss him this summer I hope he is taking that time to be with his absolutely beautiful and amazing wife 🙏after all they have both been through they deserve that time !! Thank you Jon for sharing so much beauty and light with the rest of us .. you are loved 💚
My thoughts exactly!💯 Thank you! 👏🏼💗✌🏼
THIS.
Finally, the one we've been waiting for. One of this generation's brightest and most creative minds. All of his answers are the correct answers.
Jon is a genius. I would love for him to put a playlist together of his forever songs. The ones he mentioned are fantastic.
Agreed. Except oranges.
Hotdog? C'mon man!
Agreed 💯💯💯
Petrichor ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love Jon's after-death answer. As an Atheist I believe the exact same thing about leaving love behind just without a creator.
That was my exact thought. I don't think we live on after death but we can do a great deal while we are here.
That response made me weepy. Like no one else.
And I will believe that the hotdog is a sandwich until the day I shuffle off.
We didn't exist before we were conceived, we don't exist anymore after we die, except for the memories we leave behind. Unfortunately, magic isn't real.
Interesting! I couldn't stand it. It's such a wishy-washy coward's answer. He snuck in theism, then shifted the focus onto love and lollipops. It's a classic move. 'I have specific, bizarre beliefs that should rightly have you questioning my rationality... but also shucks, puppies and cake are great!'
(It would have been very different if he'd simply answered 'Where you go isn't nearly as important as what you leave behind you'. I can respect someone declining to give their beliefs.)
@@FumikoNobuoka I had the hotdog argument with my husband. He insists it must be two pieces of bread. I think any bread will do.
Jon is a good person. The World needs more with his attitude. Peace, Love, Music, and Gratitude. God blessed him.
This might be the best Colbert Questionert I’ve ever seen.
Lets keep praying for his wife and all the positive vibes so she can heal soon. Jon deserves to be happy.
Right there with you. Sending Suleika & Jon my sincere Buddhist prayers of health, love and happiness together!! 🙏🏼✨
I just adore Jon.
He oozes happiness, spirituality, pure joy, peace, love, wit, sincerity and humanity :)
All ao true! Thanx to both for a great interview and example to us all! Blessings...
Every time I watch one of these, my "favorite smell" answer is "PETRICHOR". Thank you, Jon Batiste for the validation!
What we do here and now, that lives on forever even after our bodies pass on!!
Thank you Jon 🙏🏾
Why am I CRYING, everything about this was beautiful. I hope and pray Mrs Baptiste is healthy and they have an amazing summer. 😢😍
Jon has the most positive energy ever, his spirit truly shines...
This man is from a different time. I'm so fascinated by everything about him. Good health to he and his fam.
…and this is why this show is the best show in late night. The respect and love shared amongst the cast, band, writers and crew is noticeably. They really treat each other like family ..(from what they’ve shown us). Love from Jon to another. See you in September. Much love to you and your family. #TRYINGTOCHANGETHEWORLD
This is arguably the best guest and version of this segment. He did a great job.
Jon Batiste seems like such a non-controversial person. Then he comes straight out the gate calling hot dogs sandwiches.
LOL! Thanks for the laugh :D
I love that he starts with "that's a controversial question" as though he has reservations about being controversial. But he's got so much confidence that he doesn't need to consider that any of his answers are controversial
I like that he didn’t say it just to be controversial. I think he just has that jazz musician mind that naturally thinks outside the box
Blasphemy
@@Fangs1978 ?
Listening to this just exponentially increased my respect for him.My wife Gloria passed away recently right before our 43rd anniversary and what he said goes along with a line I wrote in a song to her .It talks about a dream I have in which(my love is in reach, baby's here next to me. She whispers to me that love never dies). It helps me a lot to believe that. Great segment. God bless,Bill Conwell
I’m so sorry. May you find comfort in beautiful memories. Those are beautiful words that you wrote. 😔🕊
My sympathy goes out to you, and I thank you for sharing your love for her with those of us here!
His very first response: "That is a controversial question!"
That is so Jon - in this context. And the way he says it. 😂
"What makes it not a sandwich?"🤣
I have to go with the late RBG who said: "The hotdog is a sandwich." ❤️
Heck my answer would be a cheeseburger and if that's not accepted then a chopped cheese lol..
@@ivorenesmith9003 Cheeseburger, my personal favorite, is also a sandwich. If the standard is "stuff between bread". Right?
Jon is the dearest soul! The world is so blessed to have him.
yes we are😊
All of his answers: so controversial and so true. I love him so much. He’s always so kind and sweet.
After watching this and especially their interview after Jon won all those Grammy’s it’s heartwarming to see how much they care about each other, and how they delight in each other’s presence.
May Jon and his wife have the loveliest, healthiest, happiest summer of their lives. Amen.
Love this man - hope his wife heals. Sending love and hope.
While he was thinking of what song to listen to for the rest of his life, I was thinking, "Air on a G String" and then he picked that as one of his choices. Jon is so wonderful and brilliant!
I can never get enough of this guy and his music. There are still so much more good things to be said about this man. I admire him. It's a good thing that he is walking on this earth!
Jon is such a rare soul. He is a Star. Sending him and his lady much love and prayers. God Bless😍🥰🤟🏽⭐☮
i really hope his wife is doing better. they deserve so many more decades of celebrating their achievements together
Jon seems like a genuinely nice man. He just had an infectious joy. He and Stephen never fail to give me the warm and fuzzy feeling a good hug would.
What an absolutely delightful and authentic man. So happy for him and all of his success and wish him a restful break
Jon made me realize that you can pick a song that you would have to listen to forever and if you picked the right song, you would be in heaven
Wish I could understand the songs he mentioned..tried looking them up.
Imagine DOOM. The soundtrack. Killing demons. Bashing skulls. Nonstop. You're their nightmare. Got it? Okay.
John's talking about music that can do for your sense of self what DOOM does for your sense of bloodlust.
Music that you can speak to you, not about violence or anger, but about Love (don't roll your eyes), beauty, honor, excitement, or dat ass.
What is the one song?
The more he does anything, the more I adore him. All the best to Jon and his family ♥️
it makes me emotional to see how much Stephen genuinely cares for Jon
this is by far the best colbert questionert ever filmed
It really is, Jon is a gem of a man...
I sincerely hope Jon’s wife is doing okay. I’m glad they’re able to spend some time together this summer.
My mom passed in September. Been struggling with the idea of an afterlife. Always lived with the idea that the last time someone says your name is when you officially die. But Jon's definition gives me hope that my mom will live forever.
@ 🤟🏼🤟🏼🎤🎤💖
His answer on “what happens after we die?” was incredibly intelligent and sensitive
I purchased his cd a few weeks ago. It's by far, the BEST MUSIC Ive heard in a long time. The Grammys are well deserved!!
Im praying for his wife's full recovery!!
Two of my most favourite souls on television.
I don’t know , as a heterosexual man , if I’m allowed to say this about these two gems of humans , but John is the darlingest , kindest, and likeable person with not a sintilla of meanness in his body and Stephen is the wittiest, sanest , most intelligent , respectful and incite full host on TV in the world ! and I adore the man.
Saying something nice about another person who deserves it is never a bad idea. 😊
You might want to change that to "insightful". I'm not being the grammar police, but the way you have it, it kind of undermines what you're saying. Which, btw, is lovely and true.
you put into words kind of what I was thinking. Jon is such a sweet soul, its touching really. It makes you "try" that much more. I really liked his musical choices b/c u want to hear that from a musical person, "oh, I'm soo moved by this xxx, this xxx this xxx" and Colbert ofc, you can tell theres something thats not like "happened" btwn the 2 in like an life/death thing, but they've really bonded, in a really sincere way. Its moving
Thank you for saying it, Mr. Say it more often, and louder 🤗
My friend, I don't see why as a heterosex man, you shouldn't be able to express appreciation over two great guys. Bless!
Jon is a wonderful being made up of joy and music. I can't listen to him without smiling
4:53 Best message ever about life and death! Thank you Jon for those inspiring words!
Every moment of Jon only makes me love him more and more. Love their friendship and how they interact with each other. Jon is such a beautiful human inside and out
Two of the best men on the planet - extreme talent, supreme wisdom. Best wishes for his wife's health.
Love, love Jon Batiste, a blessed gifted man from God, inspiring all of us. He always surprises me. Prayers 🙏 for Jon’s wife health Lord.
I've tried to watch some of these Colbert Questionerts but they usually bore me rigid so I switch off. But *Jon really shone here in a number of ways: kinds of reply (and reasons for them), originality, delivery, thought-FULL-ness, and all round grounded and positive attitude.* Regarding the music question, the thought of hearing just one piece of music for the rest of your life is a daunting one when you think of the tunes you used to play over and over again during one part of your life and wouldn't touch with a mile long barge-pole now illustrates just how tricky this question really is. So Jon's first answer to that music question - being Erik Satie's *Les Trois Gymnopedies* - was a brilliant choice because it is so sparse and full of, one might say, 'spiritual air', that it remains as perpetually listenable as Rumi's poetry is readable. [For me it would be: Palastrina's Gregorian chants, or Purcell's "Thy hand Belinda", or Trane's suites "A Love Supreme" and "Meditations for Quartet (both versions)" or even Ornette's "Crisis" and "Science Fiction" or Charles Mingus' "Let My Children Hear Music" or those Booker Little and Eric Dolphy joint albums, not forgetting some of the great work by Art Ensemble of Chicago.....]
Jon is such a very beautiful person, and he showed that, particularly right at the end, when he 'bigged up' Lewis who'll be leading *Stay Human* while Jon is away.
What you have to remember here is that the egos among musicians (particularly singers and 'lead' players) and other artists (poets) can be seriously, and damagingly, cutthroat. They are too often extremely reluctant to hand over their torch (read: power, attention and public adulation) to anyone else, even for a minute (e.g. during a crit), for fear of not getting it back when they return from their hiatus. Which is a *_flashing beacon of high insecurity._*
But I remember Sonny Rollins, in a similar (but not the same) situation cutting Trane a break (which Miles also did) - and we know just what use Trane made of these opportunities - without an iota of the shine being lost from Sonny's (or Miles') own artistry and contributions. Sonny, Miles, Mingus, Art Blakey were catalysts, just as the great Jon Batiste is. Each of them had such a high inner sense of their own personal security that whatever chances they gave a host of others would not hurt their own artistic value. And each has nurtured a great many young players throughout their careers.
Jon, all I can say is that there are not many humans like you … God bless you. Please, never change.
I love how Stephen lights up with that number answer, and then just dashes all expectation with such joy.
I was hoping he was going to finally say yes
I realize I'm late to the show. But I have to say Jon Batiste is a wonderful human being. I wish him all the best in life. Now....I must dry my tears.
"He was running...." I laughed so hard. I love Jon Batiste.
Anyone else get teary-eyed when they both told each other "I love you" at the end?!
Real men!
I absolutely did
6:48 : petrichor! YES! THAT'S WHAT I METED TO MYSELF DECKS BEFORE HE ANSWERED! The smell of oncoming rain... I just taught my 6-yr-old that word today! It's one of my top favorite smells ever.
And it‘s a beautiful word too!
Jon just has an "inner light quality" about him! Enjoy your summer break, Jon and relax!
Jon's energy and spirit is unmatched. Louis did great standing in before, will be good to see more of him while Jon takes a break.
I hope he's actually taking a break and not needing to use this time to be a caregiver. Taking care of your ailing wife is 100% not a break, mentally or emotionally, no matter how much you love them or how much light is in you. All the best to you and your family Jon. Stay safe and healthy.
He's taking a break from the show so that he can be with his wife. I don't know whether she's in treatment or hospice, but either way, Jon needs this time to himself to be with her and their family.
I was suspecting it was so he could spend time with his wife. It’s a great reason and I wish them all the best.
Somebody cutting onions in here?... *wipes tear*.
I hope Jon's wife is well and being a caregiver is, depending on circumstsnces, sometimes the best thing you can do in life. Hopefully she is well.
Sometimes difficult circumstances choose us and we have to rise to the occasion and find the strength to endure. Never easy but always necessary.
What an elegant way to smooth a transition! My thoughts for Jon's wife. Hugs.
From the hot dog/sandwich controversy, to the afterlife to Satie's "Gymnopedie," Jon Baptiste brings beautiful perspective to all of it. He is a treasure. I hope he has a blessed time off.
Thank you for providing the title of the song. I didn't quite understand it during the interview and wanted to check it out. Likely a song I've heard and never knew its title. Jon Batiste is fantastic 💙
First person who has ever answered petrichor! Wow... the best. Love you John 💜 Take care.
Jon Batiste is kindness, talent, inspiration and overall legend. Someone to truly look up to 💜💜
Jon is such a sweet person with a wonderful energy. It truly hurts me that he is going through such pain. I wish him all the best. Since Louis is taking over for the summer, maybe he should take the Questionert.
“What’s the scariest animal….a roach!!!” I have never agreed more with a statement in my entire life!!! Lol
The fantastical musical mind of Mr. Batiste. Would enjoy seeing much more.
St. Jon Baptiste is one of my favorite people.
💖💖 loved this!!
But Stephen's shock at the hotdog answer was matched or even surpassed by his silent disappointment at "orange".
Jon must have known what Stephen considers the 'correct' answer to the apples or oranges question, so he is brave to go against the current therem. As a non American I have NEVER in my life considered to put peanut butter on either of those fruits.
@@adrianaheiler9794 you should try peanut butter on an apple, really. It's a great combo.
Jon is such a beautiful speaker. His answer at 4:55 is so poetic and I’m assuming just off the top of his head!

I just love Jon Batiste. Honestly I think if I met him I would cry with joy. Such a sweet, pure soul.
Jon is a pure and true gem. Love and support for him and his lovely wife.
My pick for a song is Jon doing his rendition of the Beatle's "Blackbird". Simply beautiful.
Before this started I was going to say I'm amazed Jon is still on the show. He has so much going on in his life. That he is staying with the show and just taking some much deserved time off says so much about his character but also his love of performing. He's a true performer and entertainer in the best ways.
His "personal time" will most assuredly be spent with his wife who's condition has once more turned dire
I love him. He is talented but down to earth. The total package
