- Given a one-in-three chance of survival, Suleika Jaouad overcame leukemia in her 20s, documenting her nearly-four-year endurance of chemotherapy and her desire to live a normal life in a New York Times column, "Life, Interrupted." She followed with a 15,000-mile road trip to meet 22 of the many strangers who had written to her with stories of their own, a journey which became her new book, "Between Two Kingdoms." Correspondent Jim Axelrod talks with Jaouad, and with her partner, musician Jon Batiste, about life after cancer.

Jon's family did an excellent job raising him. He is gifted, bright and talented but yet down to earth. As he said, we are here temporarily, and tomorrow is not promised to us.
What a beautiful inspiring courageous young woman. So sad to hear her cancer is back. I hope she can beat it again and both her and John have a long life together. The World needs more people like them. 🙏

As a cancer survivor after 15 years on and off of surgeries and treatments, and now 20 years post last diagnosis, I embrace Suleika’s understanding of never healed, but moving on. I look forward to reading her book.
He is a true gem, and she is an inspiration. Many can relate to her experiences. This world is lucky to have them. ♥️

I think it's pretty lucky and wonderful that these two people found each other, and he was there for her when it mattered. Jon just creamed off 5 Grammys out of 8 nominations, they got married just before that, they've bought a new house with no furniture in it yet (just Grammys so far) and so their life together is off to a pretty good start.

I always say that it is such an honor to choose ONE person out of the billions of people walking this earth 🌍 to share this sometimes difficult experience of human existence. Too many of us take it for granted. So glad this young woman is healing and found love ❤️

The "between" is rarely spoken of, and I deeply appreciate Ms. Jaouad's eloquence in describing this place. She communicates from a place of wisdom, yet is so humble in her choice to ask strangers for help with her healing process. I know that I can learn from her and will be ordering her book. It's nice she had a dog to keep her company on her trip and her struggle. Sometimes it helps to find the words communicate to get through an experience. Not so easy to write a book when you are so ill.

As a breast cancer patient with an RV and a passion for road tripping, this book was a little too on the nose for me! Yet, I enjoyed it and draw strength from Suleika’s.
What a wonderfully well done story on a remarkable person. I did not know about Suleika Jaouad before I watched this. I now want to read "Between Two Kingdoms," ASAP.

I've recently read her book "Between Two Kingdoms" and I am in awe of her courage and the way she just kept going throughout the extreme sickness she was feeling, in what seemed like forever. There was no quit in her game. The book is amazing and a quick read, I couldn't put it down. I had no idea of her story when I bought the book but I'm so glad I ran across it on Amazon. Cheers from Oklahoma to Suleika & Jon! I hope they have many happy years ahead.
P.S. Oscar stole my heart :) P.S.S. I have a male cousin in Sarasota, Florida that is 66 and going through this exact diagnosis and on the journey to find good days again - he is a year into the treatment and now on the maintenance chemo drugs.

Thank you for doing this story. I so agree with Suleika's final sentiment that life is a journey of healing. This is something I've recently come to understand, though I would put it a little different way: life is a journey to the self, which takes healing in many ways and forms to reach.

I am "pulling" for you, Mrs. Batiste! Isn't that a fun thing to be able to say? I have gotten to know about you and then was interested in finding out more! I am grateful to you for seeking to understand what it is you are to do and then doing it--so far! I pray for many more years- for time- to do what it is you were put here to do. You are absolutely gorgeous, btw, and I hope that does not embarrass you. My daughter, and myself, too, have been bald from the illnesses and the treatments for the types of cancer that we had and it was really something to be that "in touch" with the wind, a breeze, the physical world around me with that act of removing the hair of the head. That was an interesting surprise. Both of my eyebrows went, of course but my daughter found it amusing when she lost hers but only 1 at a time! "Survival is it's own kind of creative act." I love how you put that! Thank you for sharing with everyone. My daughter has left this mortal coil-yet I have survived. My daughter knew herself--she walked with intention-she slow-walked her way through life and watched everything. I knew from the night she was born that she was going to be strong and be "a watcher." I have a picture to prove it! :) So we soldier on! I am very happy that you and John B. found each other. What a fabulous love. That is incredibly special and wonderful. My daughter's experience was the opposite- the man who swore he loved her left. So she sat with that and dealt with it, too, in her own way. I am so proud to have been able to be her Mother. And I am so glad to be able to have this opportunity to reach out to you and give you my support, which comes in forms of thinking, praying and deciding to let that be sent out for whatever it is you need at the moment, according to your own beliefs!
