I just ordered a AT-D878UVII Plus yesterday afternoon! I watched hours of your videos and Josh's HRCC videos and this is the right radio for me.
I bought a D868UV back when they first came out and it's still my favorite HT. I don't really use DMR, but I'm able to program virtually every repeater in New York and break them up by county, so it works well for me. The display is far better than any other affordable analog HT, which is important to me.
I've had an AT-D868 since they first came out. Seriously considering purchasing an 878UVII Plus! It is very nice to have a company that listens to feedback and keeps improving their products.
Thanks Josh. I run a Motorola SL7550 and an XPR6550. I also own the Anytone 878 Plus and a UV578 in the car. The XPR6550 is by far the toughest of the radios and the 878 is a close second. I take the SL7550 with me when I just want to slide it into a shirt pocket or something.

Owned MD-380, then moved to md-2017 then to Alinco to Anytone. The Alinco was very good. Quality is right with Anytone. The features are about the same but the Anytone has a better case, speaker and accessories. Jason's videos are right on the money for reviews. The software for the Anytone is better polished as well. TYT is a bit of a pain to me. You have to program both sides of the dual band radio in one zone. Anytone and Alinco you can call up individual zones per side of the radio. If you are going to get into to DMR and want to buy it right Alinco or Anytone would be the best move IMHO. I own the 878 UV right now and it does everything I need it to do. Got it 2 months before the UV 2 came out. For me not worth the extra 100 bucks as I don't do APRS. The audio on analog and digital are top notch on Anytone!!! I'm an old ham that has been out of the game for years and just now getting back in (I'm 73, ham since '86). I've been watching all your videos plus others. I have recently purchased the Wouxun UV9D Mate to supplement my old Kenwood FT-6A I've had for years. My next steps are DMR and GMRS (I like the UV9G because it's similar to UV9D Mate except screen lighting, waiting on a possible update). Watching all the reviews on DMR I like the D878UVII PLUS and support Bridgecom has to offer. Within next couple weeks I'll be making my decisions. Any suggestions are appreciated.

The new Btech 6x2 pro is the same radio as the Anytone Pro version but it’s less expensive and includes a simplex parrot repeater that you won’t find on the Anytone

Jason, I’ve had an RFinderB1 for well over a year and every time I try to use it I am underwhelmed. Greenberg claims he will help and in fact has tried but fails miserably. I’ve been waiting for someone to write a manual for the thing but no one will and I don’t know why. There is nothing and no one that I have found that can and will take the time to demonstrate its operation, so I’ve given up on it. It’s a beautiful thing if it would work, but iPhones (any of them) beat the B1 in a heartbeat, they just don’t do DMR!

Love my Anytone. Survives dropping, rain, dirt, and other brutal treatment doing SOTA. I dropped my Yaesu FT-2dr and it didn't survive although Yaesu didn't charge me that much to repair. Free programming software that's better than the stuff you pay for in order to program an expensive Yaesu FT-2DR. I will say that the Yaesu customer service for parts and repair is awesome. I have no idea how the Anytone support is. (Is there hardware support from Anytone?)

Anytone support is usually handled by the retailers in the USA, and Bridgecom does an excellent job.

I got the Anytone 878UVPlus a little over a year ago when I got my license. I love it but I would like to get the new Anytone 878UVIIPlus but I can't afford it now. I am saving up for a IC7300! But I have 2 sisters that are working to get there license and I am telling them that when they get there first radio it needs to be the new 878UVIIPlus! My other radio is the 578UVIIPlus. For my base station. But I need to get the IC7300 soon.

For a cheap radio the best value for money is the Radioddity GD77 similar to the Baofeng and Retvis but actually not the same. If you go flash it with the OpenGD77 open source firmware you get a brilliant radio for peanuts. Plus it has a hotspot mode which allows you to couple it with a Pi-Star loaded Raspberry Pi and make a 5W hotspot!
The Tytera's also have open source firmware that makes it much better than stock. But I can't fault your choice of the Anytone AT-D878UVII Plus, if you got the money it's the best all round right now.

@@chriss7393 For the price if you can find one yes, or for a bit more money Retevis RT3S might be even better now. Best find somebody who has one flashed with OpenGD77 and you'll see what I mean!
I still love my cheap TYT MD-UV380 the 64 ch/zone makes it really flexible.
I would have thought the GD-77 would have made the list even if only for the openGD77 firmware that is available for it.
I have almost all the radio's mentioned here. I have the Anytone 878, 868, 578 mobile, the Btech 6x2, Ailunce HD1, the Motorola XPR7550E, the Alinco, Connect systems CS580, the MD380, MDUV380, Anytone 878UVII PLUS, and a kenwood nx5300. My go to radio has been the kenwood. Only because it'll do NXDN, DMR and analog. It'll also do P25, but I don't have any P25 ham stuff around me, only public safety. I like the Anytones because they have promiscuous mode to monitor all traffic regardless of color codes etc. The HD1 is a nice radio. What would make it better would be a real promiscuous mode. You need to know the color code with the HD1. My 2nd go to radio is the Motorola XPR7550E. It has a great receiver. I can pick up stuff on it my other radios won't. Including my Uniden SDS100 scanner.
I have all of those radios also but my Kenwood NX5800 is the mobile version. I added the P25 key to it because we have some Ham P25 repeaters here and also in the Houston area.
I have a 7550E and I love it but i really want a dual Band DMR i think the anytone is a choice
I will have an Anytone DMR radio when they made them in Japan. For now, I have the Alinco DJ-MD5XT and the Motorola SL7500e. Great DMR radios Jason.

The RFinder B1 it’s so interesting and compelling! The main concern I have is what happens when that phone/radio is no longer supported by the android updates?
The same thing that happens to every Android device after it gets too old. You have to consider the fact that this is an Android device with a radio built in. It won't be a viable device 20-30 years from now, but.....how often to you see folks carrying around an HT from the 1980s?
@@HamRadio2 20 to 30 years? Wow I’m being a little more realistic and thinking 2 to 3 years when it’s no longer supported. And you definitely still see people caring hand helds around that are 10 years old or more.
The real answer is that it will continue to work we haven't done an update on the M1 or the k1 and about 2 years and they still work beautifully

I have Alinco MD5s and Moto 7550s and I will say the 7550 receiver is super top notch and the TX and RX audio is fantastic, but the MD5 certainly holds it own for quality/price ratio, portability (the main thing I was looking for) and ease of use for having dual band capability and Front Panel Programming. I don't really have anything to complain about with the MD5. I carry it most of the time. Plus having Part 90 allows me to use it on the LMR frequencies so I don't need to always have a 7550 with me (weather permitting).
Edit: If you are into commercial quality another great DMR is the Moto EVX-S24 (UHF only). Super portable and great audio and receiver quality. It also charges via USB micro so you don't need to carry around a cradle when out of the base for a while. The buttons are limited so you need to be wise with your button programming. 3W DMR but I haven't found any repeater I could hit with the 7550 that I couldn't hit with the S24. Originally a Vertex radio, rebranded after the Moto purchase.
One thing missing from your report is repair service. Any radio under $100 might not need repair but as the radios
go up in price it would be nice to know what brands offer parts. Companies like ICOM, Yaesu, Kenwood at least offer
a chance to get parts. I just experienced a failed AT-D878uv internal speaker and was told no parts available from the company I purchased the radio from. After a few weeks I found a company selling a replacement front cover which contains the internal speaker. It would make for good conversation to get these dealers to offer a source for parts. Parts like speakers, the side speaker/mic socket, volume cntrl or display are parts that fail and it's not impossible to DIY for the repair.
I want to add when I say parts that will fail, I don't mean this is specific to Anytone, but to all radios especially the speaker/mic connection. LCD from a drop, volume control switch. I really like my 878uv other than the speaker crapping out.

This is a big deal to me especially since I like to fix my own electronics.
I like the simplicity of the Retevis RT-84, the dual band capability, and I got mine for $61.00 brand new, including shipping. You just can't hardly beat the price/performance/durability of this little radio. The Retevis may lack the features of the more expensive models, but for my purposes, having thousands upon thousands of contact slots isn't anything I care about, or can even fathom dealing with. I also have a Retevis RT90 mobile radio, and the programming is an identical format, making the RT-84 easy to program, since I'm already familiar with the RT90s programming. I also have an Anytone 878UV, and it's a great handheld too, but I like the form factor of the Retevis RT-84 better. The Anytone 878UV is shorter, fatter, and just a little less comfortable to operate compared to the Retevis RT-84. The battery life of the Retevis is good, but the Anytone battery life is outstanding! But, for $61.00, I'll take the Retevis RT-84.

Alinco MD5 is my go to for dual band DMR . Have a UV380 , but comparing the two, Alinco has better sensitivity My Anytone 868 that is 3 years old is deaf on analog even with aftermarket antenna. MD380 is my work radio for school district and solid with it's superhet design
Bad timing for me, I just bought the GD-77 as my entry into DMR. Amazon had it down to $80 over the weekend.

As a follow up for anyone looking for a DMR, I think the 77 is a great entry, especially if you put the Opengd77 firmware on it. It.completely changes the radio features and is a must.
I also have a FT 3DR and the 77 is my primary HT with by far the most use. Although, my area does have more DMR repeaters, which is possibly the most important detail to evaluate. That said, unless I need the GPS or APRS, I take the 77.
Great video. I think you read my mind while making this video. I edc the new anytone 878iiplus, and think it's a fantastic radio with one exception. I also have the 878plus and the older version of the Alinco.

Good review. I have three HTs (AT-D878YV Plus, Kenwood TH-d74, and Yaesu FT-3DR). I like all, but my favorite is the AT. It is very easy to set up, program, and update, and there are more options for DMR repeaters (in Texas) than for Kenwood and Yaesu. So for DMR radios, my vote goes to Anytone. The price is also right.

I got a Kenwood NX-5300 UHF that i love. its a really nice radio. and works great on DMR. the only downfall is it currently only holds like max 1500 contacts. and you have to input each one manually, you cant just upload the contact list. if you can i have not figured it out. it can be a pain in the butt programming it but once you get used to the software it really isnt that bad. but thats my opinion

I have the 878UV. I really like it a lot. It’s plenty loud for use in the car and outside. The issue I have with it is that it is a bit deaf. It’s especially noticeable on FM. - KI8R

love my UVII Plus - all the features that we need and at a good price point. Personally I select radios (and test kit, antennas etc) on the features I need - never on price - that way you never see me whining about the lack of features on my $50.00 radio :-)
You should have included the Motorola ION, I would consider it the top of the line single band DMR handheld.

@@HamRadio2 I just got a B-1 and have an ION, both are good radios, the B-1 is a better for appliance operators but the ION is a much better professional quality unit but only single band.

The Rfinder b1, as it has Android build in, it appears almost like it’s more of a phone first, and a radio second. Also because it’s Android, your now subject to all the Google tracking that comes along with it. Which in fact is (I believe,) the very thing that new HAM’s (actually all HAM’s,) want to avoid, yes? 🤷♂️

Hello, I recently started paragliding classes and in the standard equipment I need to have a handheld radio. I came across your channel and because I'm also an engineer and I liked the topic, I've watched a few of your videos. I don't even know if a DMR is the right type of device that I'm looking for... but here it goes.... Could you please recommend a few of the best devices that I can use in my situation? I've seen that some colleagues use Baofeng models but they tend to lose signal after a hill or a patch of forest... I don't think I need a very rugged device but any type of protection would be nice. My top budget would be arround 150-180$/Euro per device. Thanks in advance for your time and be sure I'll spend more hours on your channel.

No love for the Radioddity GD-77 with OpenGD77 firmware? I have 2 TYT HTs and. TYT mobile rig and the GD-77 is objectively better with the firmware mod.
Nah the GD-77 is kinda junk. Yes the open firmware mod improves it, but open firmware is a bit tricky. It voids your warranty on the radio and if it fails or starts to present problems, there isn't much you can do about it. For a new Ham, no... I don't recommend this radio.

I use the Alinco DJ-MD5TGP and I like the small size and clear audio. I noticed the DJ-MD5TGP has been out of stock not long after the DJ-MD5XT came out on the market and in stock. Wondering if the chip shortage is really affecting stock of the DJ-MD5TGP but not the new DJ-MD5XT or is discontinuation coming for the DJ-MD5TGP.
When I made this video, they were both out of stock. I suspect the XT is replacing the TGP though.
Yes XT is slightly updated version. With more powerful CPU/bigger memory. I have one and it works fine.

Nah, those have issues. Most folks I know with one of those upgraded to a UV380 or something similar for less headaches.
Everybody can afford $299 for an AnyTone portable. Everybody says they are poor, but the difference between $150 and $299 is $150 bucks. They waste $150 bucks on their power bill, water bill, grocery bill, bar bill, cigarettes, or gasoline for a wasted trip. W6CBS - Bill Hudson's Rule of Life: "When you buy quality, it only hurts once!"
I'm gonna highly agree with ya. If you can afford 150 for a radio, save up another paycheck work a little overtime if you have to and get the Anytone. I didn't and while my TYT UV MD390 is ok it's just ok. As well I know any DMR programming will have a learning curve the Anytone software is by and far the easiest most intuitive of all of them. Not a big fan of the TYT software.
Hmm, mostly I've been talking on Analog lately. Still seem to be people on that around here (SF Bay area.) I wonder, does DMR really work as an actual HT, are there enough repeaters around, or is it really DMR + Hotspot most of the time. Concerned, I might rather have a mobile with more power, if I wanted to be sure I'd have enough power to reach a DMR repeater.
Mobile is probably a better option for reaching repeaters.

On the Rfinder radio do you have to pay for a service in order to use the HT ?
Technically, no. You pay for the app itself - it is $12.95 per year. You can subscribe to it from ANY smartphone, to lookup repeater info. The same is true for the B1 device, but the subscription is for the app itself, which is available on any device, not to use the radio in the B1.
I wish Anytone had a bit more of a comitment to accessibility by blind operators, and by "a little more", I mean "any". They were approached about this and made up reasons why not even their CPS software could be made to work with screen reading software. They were also given information on how the OpenGD77 project managed to make the GD77/DM1801/Rd5R all self-voicing. And chose not to implement anything. Which is a ashame, as I understand that otherwise, the Anytone radios are excellent in all other respects. So if only for accessibility reasons, my DMR radio is a Radioddity GD77 with Accessible DMR loaded. Doesn't have the receiver of the Anytone, and the audio has a...distinctive sound, it's the most usable for me.

I bought an Ailunce HD1dmr, new, and the battery lasted about a week. Hardly used it at all, now, it won't hold a charge. Be Careful with the thing.

I've never had one of these radios in my hand, no.
I don't like to disparage other devices but it's not even close... This thing works anywhere on Earth without a code plug if there's a repeaters around you you will find them...the S900A he's only two watts is not supported by amateur radio operators and the receiver is not nearly as sensitive...
@@bobofthedeep Many of our radios have been sold mainly to businesses and they seem to like it. I can ask my boss on the Ham radio part but have seen it advertised in a wireless Ham magazine. The S900A sells at a little higher price but has ability to use a simcard and DMR inside

The Anytone 878UVVI-Plus has a poorly implemented volume control that does not allow reducing the lowest volume from painfully and obnoxiously loud. Internal settings allow ONLY reducing the highest volume level and does nothing for reducing the lowest volume setting.
Like my 7550, but I wouldn't mind getting the RFinder. Maybe some day.
I am new on DMR I am in Canada Amazon don’t have DMR radio or the person I talk too don’t know what’s DMR is. I would like to by a Hand Held for a try then in the future go for something better if I manage to work with. Thank you.
DMR radio is more complicated than HAM radio, so think carefully before starting.

The RFinder could easily operate Winlink if Winlink made an Android version of their software. Do they? I am not sure, myself. But that is a question for the Winlink guys.

RF could be the force that does it.
We have the apis to enable it if there is a wind link app for Android and they want to get the apis they just have to ask me directly I'll be glad to share it with anybody that wants to ride your custom application directly against the radio module! This is all about being great radio experimenters this is a new type of device that doesn't exist anywhere else... There are others that try but it's not even close... If anybody wants to develop just ask!
The Btech has talker alias so you don’t need to add anymore contacts if you don’t want to
Talker alias only works if the repeater or hotspot you are using also has talker alias.

If the RFinder would be multimode (c4fm, dstar, dmr, p25) then it would be at the right price ... It's a computer, it should be able to do it ...
They want to add those modes to it, and are working towards that goal. Honestly if it did RF in those modes, it would sell for a higher price too. If it was just an "over IP" device, I'd be less interested.

Err, the cell phone part of RFinder or any cell uses RF to get to and from the cell towers!
Correct. But this one also uses RF to transmit on both the 2M and 70cm bands - it is not an "app" that requires a cell or wifi network to operate.

So I just passed my amateur and although I have a couple of anytone's and alinco I come across this radio the QYT RT-8R cheap China radio 4 bands but most reviews are from other countries im not Russian. And only one English guy who swears by it not enough to convince me, please tell me your real thoughts on it if your not too busy Thank you 😊
I am not familiar with that model, but I suspect that all 4 of those bands aren't US Amateur Bands. For instance, if it has 350MHz, that is useless. Also if it has the 220MHz band, but starts at 240MHz and goes up from there, that is also useless.
@@HamRadio2 I knew there was a reason why those frequencies didn't square up to me because I didn't recognize them and would show up in a sensible way in our U.S.A. frequencies lol their foreign frequencies, very much appreciate your reply and your videos, I'm cant wait for my call sign to show up in the fcc database

I have an AnyTone D878UV Plus
I am new to the Ham scene, to the point that I am still working on getting my license. I have several questions but will limit it to 3.
1. Can I buy a radio before I get my license, and have it programed?
2. The AnyTone 878UVVII Plus is what I am looking at my budget is $500.00 (Was looking at the Kenwood, guess they quit making them}.
3. I am not very electronic smart, How hard is it to program the radio.

Yes you can buy the radio now and listen with it. #2 isn't a question. #3 - programming the radio isn't hard, but there is a learning curve. I have several videos on this channel about how to do it.

With the speed at which technology increases it’s hard to justify spending $1000 for the RFinder especially since I’m a iPhone user. I have the Anytone 878UV plus and that I purchased in July of 2020 and already I can’t put the entire database in it. The new Anytone radio with 500,000 contacts is a large database but I figured a couple years that will not be enough. Memory is cheap, they should have the ability for another few dollars having 5 million contacts . Gee it’s a scam just to get you to upgrade your radio every few years so you can get the entire database in for a couple more years..

I've had my BTech 6X2 for a few years. It's been a good rig, my first DMR. The battery charging stand developed a problem. BTech replaced the charging stand, no questions asked. Is the battery for the Anytone 868-878 the same as the BTech 6X2? I thought that is the case, anyone know?
I think they are the same, but I have not tested.

So, what happens if you prune the database? say I only load contacts from the US, whats the detriment? what about not loading any contacts?
You don't have to load the database at all. The only thing that changes is that when people key up, you will just see their DMR ID# on the screen, rather than their name and callsign. It doesn't affect the performance of the radio at all.
Can you also send APRS txt messages with the latest Anytone HT. I cant find anything about that. Or maby this would come in the new firmware update.
Is the RFinder B1's Android software upgradable? I believe you mentioned it runs Android 8.1, but the current Android software version is 11. If I purchase this radio, I would definitely want to be running the most current Android version. Hopefully, it is not a radio that would be limited to the software version (8.1) that's installed on it. Any information you provide on this would really be appreciated. Thank you
Why would that even matter?
Version 8 is probably perfectly fine for a handheld radio.
It's not a phone. It's not constantly changing and needs new software.
A phone will go over quite a few changes during the course of ownership, and that is the main reason for software updates. A radio does not. A phone will gradually become slower for various reasons and will require new optimized software, a ham radio does not.
